Boy...Canadians sure do like their French fries! I thought Americans were bad... We got our meals and three quarters of the plates were filled with fries. All kidding aside, this isn't just any ordinary truck stop. The food is great home cooking, the atmosphere is like a ski lodge, and the waitresses are efficient and courteous. This is a great place for a meal before and after a flight. That's exactly what we did! Gas prices in Nova Scotia are pretty much standard throughout the province. So, if you have a cat, rental it is a good place for a fill up before or after a trip. I had the hot turkey sandwich. It was delicious and very filling. My husband had the whiskey burger that was actually more like a barbeque burger. Both meals were hearty and filling. We didn't have to eat the rest of the day! Parking on the premises is ample. You can even purchase some souvenirs and snacks at the gift shop on the way out! read more

We have been coming here for years. This was the worst service we have ever had here. And it's right up there with the worst dining experience anywhere. The lineup to get in was really long, but it's NY day so we expected it, no worries, the line went pretty quickly. We were seated and waited for at least 10 minutes before our server M showed up. She asked if she could take our drink order - no smile or greeting - and we said absolutely, and we could give her the whole order if she liked; we told her we had been thinking about it for days (true!) and couldn't wait for a hot turkey sandwich. No smile, she left. Brought back a milkshake with chocolate sauce dripping down the side. Then we sat and waited for over an hour for our food. We asked her why every other table that came in after we did had been served and finished eating. She said it was busy and the kitchen was backed up. That doesn't explain why EVERYONE had eaten that had come in after us. She didn't apologize, she didn't didn't smile, she was rude. She went and came back with our food. We ate the meal and asked her for our bill. She PURPOSELY didn't bring it for another 10 minutes. We watched her puttering around and making coffee and serving guests. I had my coat on and we were obviously wanting to leave. She took her time on purpose and I honestly have no idea why she was so rude. We were really kind and friendly when we met her, it's bizarre. I used to be a server so I am especially kind with servers. Anyway, not ever being served by her again. If you are having a bad day you still don't take it out on the customers. Keep driving or stop in Truro, this place has gone down hill. The bathrooms were dirty too. Sad, it used to be a tasty pit stop. read more

I'm so excited that as a vegan I can finally eat at Irving Big Stop again. I grew up having breakfast with my family here or stopping when travelling to new Brunswick. They now carry the Beyond Burger, which I recommend to even my meat loving friends. You will be shocked. The Enfield restaurant is spacious, comfortable, clean and decorated beautifully. Our waitress was sweet, prompt and well mannered. The burger itself was delicious. Vegans order with no mayo or cheese and skip the coleslaw, they will give you extra fries. read more

My wife and I have been travelling to Big Stops for years. More than just the portion size was the quality of food. It's with a heavy heart that I must say the food at the Enfield Big Stop is not up to par. I had the Beef & Barley soup; it was not homemade. Then I had the Teriyaki Stir Fry which said on the menu "Fresh Veg" on a bed of rice pilaf. I got rice mixed with a frozen veg known as Oriental Mix all mixed together with some Teriyaki sauce. Granted it was Hot that's one star, and the quick service is the other star. My wife's meal was just as bad, you could taste that the deep fryers needed changing a couple of days ago. Ever since the new building went up the quality of food has gone down. Down to the point that I don't think we will bother making the drive anymore for what used to be the best fries ever. read more

Busy comfort food spot at the Irving station near 102 at the Enfield exit. Food quality is excellent, fast friendly service and comfy seating. Lots of parking. There is a well stocked convenience store and baked goods are available. My favourite is the club sandwich with fries. The only thing wrong with this place is it's not next to my house! read more

A good place to stop on the road, plates are big, but full of French fries more than the meal itself. Prices are above the average rate for a meal. I'd give here a 3.5 actually. I came for a later afternoon lunch on a drizzly Saturday in April with a friend and her 4-year-old. I had no idea the place was so big inside and a "normal" restaurant, since I had been in the Irving Big Stop at the Canso Causeway, I thought it would be a smaller diner inside. No! Giant, pretty nice atmosphere with high ceilings, capacity for at least 100, a warm woody feel with a large artificial fireplace in the center, a section of baked goods for sale, etc. There was a lineup of about 10 people ahead of us, but it was no more than a 10 minute wait for our table. We were seated at a booth closest to the door, which normally I wouldn't love, but it was fine. The line-up persisted through the hour or so that we were there. Service was friendly but our food took at least half an hour to arrive. Luckily the 4-yr-old was distracted by his toys, so didn't notice. I decided to try their monthly burger platter (12.99 although I can't find a full menu online...it had bacon, cheese, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato and homemade patty on simple sesame seed bun) and wasn't too big, but was delicious. The paddy wasn't that thick, but again, just right for me and full of juicy flavor. The frozen fries were crinkled and fine. My friend tried their mushroom & mozza burger, but it had no sauce on it, so she requested a bottle of mustard to add to the bottle of ketchup which was already at the table. Her son had the kids' cheeseburger which looked the same size as the adult one, with just less fries on a smaller plate. To go, I got a slice of their chocolate cake with boiled icing and it was gigantic. I didn't even eat it until the next day, but liked it a lot. She got a slice of carrot cake to go, because her parents commented that they loved it, but she found it slimy and too dense, so didn't enjoy. 2nd visit: around 5pm on a sunny Saturday in July with my parents, and ended up getting the exact same booth as last time, closest to the door. We had a 10-15 minute wait to get in I would guess. We were told a group of 35 people showed up at once, and then left all at once, and then the regular tables moved quite smoothly. Friendly, funny waitor. I tried the "Big Stop Omelet?" which I don't see listed on their online menu, but it was pretty good, with bacon, mushrooms, peppers, onion, cheese...side of frozen home fries (too many, which I couldn't finish), and toast. My parents both opted for the Hot Turkey Sandwich and they said it was decent/average, nothing wrong, nothing memorable. Served with frozen crinkle fries and boiled carrots. The fresh-squeezed lemonade my mother found a bit too sweet until she stirred it, and then was ok with it. I loved it, and found it not overly lemon or sour. We wanted to try a dessert but were too full. While waiting for the food, we played a few rounds of the 'Original IQ' peg game which is at the table. Although nothing special about the place, I'd still go back anytime. Mostly I want to try their coconut cream or lemon meringe pie, which are gigantic in the display case and I've heard are quite good. read more

There's something about Irving Big Stops that feels like home. No matter which location you visit, the menu offerings are the same, the decor is the same and you know you're going to leave satisfied and full. One of the main reasons we love Big Stops is that they are family restaurants. We can dine in comfort knowing that children are welcomed and expected to be there by other patrons. They are given crayons and papers to colour and there are kid-specific menus. Most of the time we even see older couples watching the children and smiling and interacting with our boys. It takes the pressure off us as parents to have them "be seen but not heard". The food is always consistent, always hot and always fresh and tasty. I've become a fan of the Chicken Caesar Wrap Combo and hubby usually has a burger platter or one of the daily specials and we never leave hungry. One of the downsides to dining here is the fact there's rarely room for dessert and believe me, you WANT dessert. One glance at the dessert showcase and you'll know why. Mile high meringue on their pies, carrot cakes...drool. Hint: Try the coconut cream pie. You won't regret it. Service is always attentive, fast and friendly which is always appreciated on road trips. You can be in and out within 30 minutes most of the time. read more

The Irving Big Stop resonates in the hearts of many as an essential road trip destination. I don't know when I first visited this gaz-o-bar diner, but I do know that it became ingrained in my psyche as a haven for milk shakes, french fries and sliced pies! A 48 hour rocket car trip to Montreal (circa Wednesday to this morning) had me landing at the Big Stop for a bright and early, wake and shake breakfast. I love the diner atmosphere, the crews of truckers hunched over their warm meals, ladies tipping pots of coffee and displays of decadent sugar loaded desserts. Andrew and I slumped into a booth and ordered veggie omelets from a friendly lady in the traditional blue Irving button up shirt. The food was quick and I'm pretty certain that they've adopted a less greasy approach because our meal was borderline health conscious! It wasn't oily at all, and the food was fresh and tasty. I was too out of it from hours of highway hypnotic forward motion to remember to order a milkshake, but it's probably for the best (7am and milkshake aren't necessarily the perfect pair). The meals were inexpensive and the vibe was spot on. Need I mention Irving's clean bathroom promise? It is quite reassuring to know that when nature calls you can count on their water closets always being in tiptop shape. So Irving Big Stop: thanks for the warm meal to help me on my way today. I don't like writing bad reviews, let me just start there. But, I also don't like sitting on people-who-I-don't-know's lap while trying to enjoy my dinner either; that's what it felt like I was doing here. It was pretty busy last night, but instead of spacing people out, they filled one side of the dining room first, placing you right next to a full table, and then the next group right next to your table, and so on. Needless to say our dinner conversation was pretty... tamed and quiet. Other than that the service was great; pretty speedy and the waitress was really sweet! I ordered the grilled chicken burger and fries. The fries were great (frozen I'd imagine) but the burger was so tasteless, I didn't know what to expect anyway, but I was pretty disappointed. Nothing makes the world of trucking more appealing to me than the gratuitous eating of food because who cares if you're gassy and bloated when you're driving across the country all by yourself in the middle of the night? Okay, so the appeal falls apart in the second half, but the moral of this story is that the Big Stop is a carb-filled, gravy-soaked, fried, battered, and served by a cute older lady version of heaven on earth. The Big Stop has defined many a trip to Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, and even New Brunswick with its glorious 24-hour breakfast, poutine upgrades, and anything else you can ever imagine wanting when you're a) hungover, b) starting a long drive, c) finishing a long drive, d) completely unwilling to let someone make you feel bad for eating a hefty portion of fake home-cooked food. The menu is big and plentiful, the food is hearty and filling, the service is like a visit to your great aunt's place so long as she's friendly and waits on you hand and foot, and it's stupid affordable. No road trip is complete without a stop at the Big Stop. It's a beacon of light in the long drive to come, or the one that has passed. HUGE portions, deep fried, fresh baked bread, delicious. If you don't want a huge meal you can order off the "seniors" menu for a reduced price and portion size. You don't have to be a senior. I think they may have renamed the menu to "lite fair" or something recently. Washrooms are always clean, and there is a great little store to stock up on bottled water and snacks for the trip to come. read more

Nothing beats the Big Stop! A Maritimes tradition dating back to approximately the begginning of time, The Big Stop is a classic place to stop, gas up and enjoy a cheap and tasty meal. This particular Big Stop is my favorite in the area. It is located near the airport and is always worth the few minutes of driving outside our fair city's core. The food is delicious, cheap and comes in huge portions. Breakfast is served all day (major bonus points) and the staff is always very friendly and fast. This Big Stop has a great reputation and as such you can occasionally find yourself waiting a few minutes for a table, but stick around, it is completely worth it. My friends and I will often get together in a large gang and head to the big stop for supper, it's one of those rare places we can almost always agree on. I do not know many people who haven't eaten at The Irving Big Stop. If you are doing a trip, make sure you stop here, we always do. They have a full house usually and a traditional menu. The food is always good here. They give large portion sizes, one of the favourites you will see float by you is the Hot Turkey Sandwich smothered in Gravy. It is awesome! There is usually a homemade pie kicking around for you to have a slice of. We love this spot, the staff here are really nice considering they are always busy. read more

Have Applewood Salmon and Lobster Roll diners here on our way to Halifax. The grilled Salmon needs more seasoning; was a bit dry and doesn't have deep smoky flavor. The lobster roll serves on split white bread seems like it has been rinsed under fresh water too long. The service was excellence; very attentive and careful. read more

I hadn't been to this Big Stop in years; my last visit was before the new building. The service was friendly and welcoming, but a bit rushed, as the place was busy. We were seated in the booths by the kitchen door. I would probably avoid this in future, as it is a bit noisier and busier than other tables in the restaurant. The new building is clean and spacious. We were there for breakfast. A few things I noted on my visit: - This is the first restaurant I ever recall going to that did not have Eggs Benedict on the menu. This isn't the place for your breakfast on the days that you are craving hollandaise. - There are quite a few menu options involving fried bologna - as a tip, you can have this exchanged for an alternate breakfast meat if bologna is not what you are looking for when heading out to eat. - The bread is "buttered", I believe, with margarine or some other blend. Overall, my breakfast was good. I had the breakfast sandwich. I really like the hashbrowns and the fact that they were only very lighted seasoned before coming to the table. The portions were also a good size. If I was nearby and hungry, I would certainly go back! read more

I just had the worst meal I ever had at a Big Stop! Maybe even ranks up there as the worst ever. I had a roast beef dinner that had instant mashed potatoes and gravey out of a can. Cole slaw was commercial like at Sobey's. The server said the potatoes were fresh but I don't know what one would have to do to make them exactly like instant. The new management obviously is making changes but not in a good way. When I told the server, Taylor, she said I "was insulting her". She took my money however even though she had never asked how it was. I hadn't eaten even half. She was rude. Perhaps they should to listen to customer feedback. read more

Huge big stop near the airport. Irving is the main dominant power family in the Maritimes and they do a solid job of offering a good quick convenient option to Tim Hortons. They are bright cheerful and offer a good selection of coffee, junk snacks typical cooler drinks and everything else one could ask for from a gas station. Plus a restaurant. Also if you are like me and drink too much water and need frequent restroom breaks it's a clean place for a short pause. They never give you the evil eye also for just stopping in to use their facilities. Convenient, clean and comfortable. Right on fella! read more

Landed in Nova Scotia Thursday morning & was starving so uncle J suggested the Enfield Big Stop. I believe they have six locations thru-out N.S. It's really a truck stop but on the higher/cleaner end, got a franchise look but down home warm feeling. Ordered the classic burger with fries... I know you folks are thinking really JoFo? A burger in N.S.? But I'm here for 10 days & got lots of time for seafood, anyhow cheeseburger was a 8oz homemade patty with all the toppings, fries are frozen but piping hot. Uncle J had the fish & chips & said they were good, Aunt M had the beef barley soup & she said it was good, nice & hot. $40 for the 3 of us, tax & tip included. Friendly staff clean restaurant & clean washrooms are a plus. Close to the airport so swing by & check it out on your way in or out. Cheers & eat well!!!!! read more

I had heard so much about this place but was very disappointed. We stopped in for a quick bite before getting to the airport. Of the 3 of us two had what was advertised as whole clams as opposed to strip clams, which were also on the menu at a cheaper price. When they arrived they were simply battered, deep fried baby clams. I would have sent them back but as we didn't have a lot of time to get to the airport for the flight we ate them. Since I feel that this was false advertising on their menu I will definitely not be going there again. I would probably give a lower rating but this is as low as we're allowed. read more

I gave this two chances in two weeks so. Feel this was a fair shake. Anyone in Atlantic Canada will tell you that an Irving Big Stop is a "sure thing" or it used to be. What most may not know is that Irving sold the restos to Couche-Tard, a Quebec company who leases the restos to private individuals or companies. What this means is that there is no longer an "Irving" quality; each resto is on its own to produce the standard menu. Right from the start this has my alarm bells ringing. Coffe thatbis so weak you can see through the pot. Please! You are serving weak coffee to weary truckers?!? Scrambled eggs are meant to be scrambled not poured on the grill and left flat to cook. Service was terrible, ignored while telling workout stories and then ran pillar post with too many tables in the section. $2 coffee and $2.50 tea??? In Nova Scotia??? Really? My advice is to,avoid the qua It's decay and stay away from Irving Big Stops until Irving buys them back and "regulates" quality back in the true Irving manner (do it or you're fired!).
