I can honestly say this is one of my favorite stores in downtown Salem. The owners are so nice and they always say "Hi!" when I come in. Its always so genuine, and they are so amazingly knowledgeable on things. Any question I have they either know the answer or are quick to find out the answer for me. The store is clean and well organized. It definitely isnt like some stores where you feel like you're wading through a dust bowl. The floor staff are incredibly kind and helpful as well. I love that the floor staff asks if they can help, and are quick to grab any unwieldy items so that I can shop easily and hands free. The variety of items that I find are always amazing and and always changing. I never know what Im going to find and I always go home with some amazing treasures that I didn't know I needed. The takeaway from this long winded review is this: EngelbergAntiks is my favorite downtown store and you won't be disappointed in popping in. Make sure to tell John and Nancy "Hi!", and make sure you have plenty of time on your parking meter. You're going to need it if you want to see everything in the store. read more

I am a local photographer and Direct Support Professional. During the late summer I take my seniors into this shop and the owners allow for me to use their vendor space as a backdrop. In addition, I have taken handful of the individuals I support for my job as a DSP, and they enjoy spending time in this business and the owners are very kind and respectful to all of the above. I am so lucky to have such a kind and honest local business owners who allow me to utilize their space frequently. If you're reading this and are worried about their 1-star reviews, please understand that most of the time it is because people try to palm the smaller items as this IS an antique shop. However, this business has cameras, and anytime potential thieves try that they get caught and come to the internet to fabricate lies to collect what's left of their ego after the owners chose NOT to get police involved, which they are totally within their right to do. Genuinely a staple of downtown Salem, but it has its flaws. I never faced discrimination for looking around at items in the store (or being treated like a thief) as mentioned in other reviews, but I've also only been inside a handful of times. Many hidden gems here from genuine y2k clothing, metal music cassettes, and uranium glass thingamajigs. BUT I will most definitely not be going in anymore. I've started to notice a few of their sellers are openly selling newly bought fast-fashion, AI generated artwork, and 3D printed slop toys. Especially from one seller I noticed an egregious amount of brand new fast-fashion "alternative" clothing and AI art key chains with art that doesn't even make sense. As a 15-year-old customer, I was asked to leave the store after moving a chair. I was unaware that the location operates as a vendor shop with multiple sellers and assigned stalls for specific items. At no point was this explained to me prior to the situation. The employee contacted the manager without first speaking to my friend and me to clarify what had happened. The interaction made it seem as though we were intentionally causing trouble or being disruptive, which was not the case. We had no intention of disrespecting the store's policies and would have appreciated the opportunity to understand the situation before being asked to leave. read more

I did not like the cashiers attitude when I first walked into the store. I've never been to this place before, and asked if it was an antique store, and the lady scoffed and replied "uh yea" not a very good impression. I definitely don't need to be treated poorly because of whatever is going on with her. I spent no money, and left the store. Hopefully whoever was working the register can recenter herself, because it left a bad taste in my mouth. In response to your comment, I looked at you square in the eyes as I walked out of your store. That's because you were so kind to hand me my bag when I had asked for it on the way out. You were rude to my daughter. I get it, you might be having a bad day and deal with theft, I'm sure of that. You don't have a right to project that on other people, or customers. My behavior was a response to your mistreatment and misjudgment of character. Maybe next time you'll be a little kinder to strangers who aren't there to cause trouble or harm to anyone. That bag was in the walk way when I went behind your counter to grab it. I did ask for my shopping bag, that's when she said it's behind the counter, you can go grab it. How she spoke to me in my opinion, was rude. Not to mention, she ignored me when I asked how her day was going. So, you think your poor customer service is justified because we missed seeing the sign at your door? Okay. We aren't unreasonable people and I do listen when someone is talking to me. There's no sense in arguing points on yelp reviews as to who's right, or wrong in this scenario. This is one of my Happy Places in Salem. When work feels too stressful or my neighbors are too annoyingly noisy, yes, I resort to shopping therapy, and there's no better place for shopping therapy than Engleberg Antiks. When family and friends visit me, I ALWAYS take them here and they always love it. There are two floors filled with numerous booths of endlessly interesting "stuff", with enough variety to offer something for everyone's unique and eclectic tastes. First off, let's talk about the owners AND the previous owner. From what I have learned, she was a legend and a groundbreaker in the Salem antiquing and vintage retail world. Ask the current owners about her if you want to hear some very interesting Salem history. And the current owners are great. They are clearly hardworking people dedicated to providing great quality and variety and are a huge part of what makes downtown Salem great. The current owners always cheerfully greet everyone who walks though the door and offer helpful info. Next, the consignment booths. There are so many! Some have really great prices, some are a little high, but everything is priced well within reason for provenance and vintage and condition and so forth. And the goods! As you can see from the photos I have posted of just SOME of the many fun items me and my fam have found at Engleberg, there's a strong offering of midcentury modern, along with rustic antiques, some very cool "goth" stuff (CIA booth), LOTS of vintage clothing (I got a retro pink leather jacket here that is AWESOME), 1970s retro items, tons of old vinyl LPS, old china, tools, and art of all mediums including paintings, posters, sculptures, etc. And the art! They have curated an excellent collection. Check back often! The items in the booths are constantly changing! Lastly, when I was last there, they suffered a major theft from a grifting mom teaching her two minor daughters how to be lowlife shoplifters. The owners were unmistakably upset, frustrated and sad. They don't deserve this. This is why some stores in downtown Salem have closed, and why "we can't have nice stuff". We DON'T want to lose this place from downtown Salem. I highly encourage you to visit their store and take your time enjoying--and hopefully buying--some of the many well-curated items! read more

Been here a few times and have found a few cool things. It's a store full of booths, each booth has a different set up/different specialty. Lots of randomness. Some booths (mostly downstairs) think pretty highly of their inventory...the prices are insanity. You can for sure tell which booths have people who care and which booths nobody checks on. read more

The girl at the register seemed nice when we walked in, but ignored us when we asked how she was. Not only that, she asked to take my bag which most likely is because of theft, I completely understand but when we went to get the bag the lady behind the counter had a rude tone and told me to pick it up from behind the counter, normally i'm a very understandable person but had she been even slightly nicer, or maybe even helped grab it, this all could've been avoided. Scored some awesome antiques. Bought a non working "wall hanger" vintage double barrel shotgun. Not wanting to walk down the street with such an item in hand, the two gentlemen helping us suggested pulling around to the back alley, stayed open a little bit late to accommodate our purchases, and helped us load. im a jewish teenager and i honestly find writing reviews pointless but i honestly cannot fathom why they have some of the items they have so here i am writing a review. I was in the store today with some friends amd me and one friend got yelled at for being behind something that was out of view of the cameras, we were just looking at some dolls behind a shelf, we as well got yelled at for throwing things and being disrespectful i was walking around with a bag i was going to buy slightly swinging it and my friend was pretending to play with a doll we were acting like normal teenagers but apparently thats not okay, they also sell items from nazis and WWll as-well as some very racist and other very offensive items the woman at the counter was the one who yelled at us as me and my two friends we're leaving the store the same lady gave us the dirtiest side eye and straight stare. read more

I was just in the store and they aren't enforcing mask wearing among staff or customers. Female clerk had mask hanging off face with one side around ear and male clerk had on a face shield (those work of we had a pandemic of spitting but it's in the air idiots)! Well, they are a bit expensive but not compared to most I've seen in other towns such as Astoria. They have a huge selection one of the largest in the area, the staff is quirky and helpful. The furniture in the basement is rad, expensive, but rad. They have school desk and plenty of 1940's era furniture. This town needs more of things like this, interesting, fun, and unique shops! It's bad enough that people under 40 have to live in Salem, please open more stores like this! read more

As I no longer live in Salem, I twice called requesting to purchase a gift certificate and was told it is not their policy to allow purchases over the phone. So much for a gift certificate for my niece this Christmas. I will not shop here again. I miss seeing Henri at Engelberg (and the fudge occasionally sold in the side room!) but Henri is part of my childhood experience of this shop and that experience no longer exists. If you go further North I suggest Stars Antiques in Sellwood/West Moreland in Portland, Oregon. They are worth your time and worth the trip. Any trips I make North will be focused on Stars.
