My boyfriend and I were passing through on our way back to Asheville from Linville Falls and spotted this little cheese shop from the road. We decided to stop in and grab some snacks for a drive in concert the next night. The Ashford Reserve (sharp cheddar) is honestly one of, if not THE BEST, cheddars I've ever had. The peach habanero jam is the perfect combo of sweet with a little spice that paired really well with the cheese. We also picked up a jalapeño goat cheese spread that was amazing! Not to mention the ladies who worked the shop were super friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend stopping by English Farmstead if you are in the area!!

The cheese is freshly made right there. There are samples and she let us sample something that wasn't out. Absolutely wonderful!

It is the only commercial plant left in the state. Ashe County Cheese produces 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of cheese a week. The Blue Ridge Mountains were chosen for the facility by Kraft as there was a surplus of milk in the region from all the dairy farming. The lush high-altitude pastures were great for dairy cattle. Kraft bought up many smaller dairy farms and made a more modern, centralized facility so the cheese could be distributed and sold outside of the mountains. West Jefferson was the chosen location to collect the milk within a 50-mile radius. Ashe County Cheese Factory has a viewing room where you can watch cheese being made. This was the highlight of my visit as I got to watch most of the cheese curd process from separating the whey and curds to draining the whey to mixing and agitating to testing the batch to adding the salt. I left at that point to allow others to view, as the viewing room was on the small side. The retail shop is across the street, and you can buy all types of cheese, including the curds. I bought some butter cheese and white cheddar trims besides the curds. They have insulated bags to buy with ice packs so you can keep it cool and refreeze the ice packs. It stayed cold for the three days I needed it to, with time in a hot car and some time in a refrigerator. Besides cheese, they sold fudge, jams, crackers, candies and wine. I found great postcards too. If West Jefferson is too far to travel to buy some squeaky cheese curds, you can order online from their website.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon to get some grilled cheeses, scope out the new diggs, and take home some delicious products. The dining room has about 4 tables (3 chairs at each table but realistically for 2 to be comfortable). Looks like the small outdoor seating area had 3 tables (for 2). Walk up to the counter to order or take advantage of their expertise here!! While we were enjoying our grilled cheeses, a couple came in needing a lot of advice for a party they were having later this evening. They went to the right place!! Absolutely no shortage of helpful knowledge and it sounds like they were all set for their plans in the evening. Definitely come check out this location!! Cheese is my kryptonite but if I'm going to partake and indulge, I'll come here to do so.

We neglected to bring a wine to complement our lunch, though it sounds like they're working on a liquor license, which would make this an even more perfect spot to enjoy fabulous food, knowledgeable service, and pick up a few favorites to take home. The store and dining areas are a bit small, and I do wish the seating were a little more comfortable, but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. Well done!

A staff member was using the meat slicer and, while wearing gloves, took out his personal phone to answer a call. While on the phone continued to handle the food. After finishing his call, he proceeded to served samples to customers while still wearing the same gloves that had touched the meat and his phone. I asked about speaking to the manager because I wanted to address the concern, but I was surprised to find out that the person involved was the manager. I understand that mistakes can happen, but this felt vary unprofessional and unsanitary, especially from someone in a leadership position. I have been coming here for several years and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and experience. Unfortunately, I have noticed a change over time, and it feels like that shift started when the current manager began taking more control and changing things. It is disappointing to see a place I have supported for years move in a direction that feels less welcoming and less focused on the standards that originally made it a place I wanted to return to. I hope the business takes this feedback seriously and reinforces proper food handling practices with the staff.
