The Loyalist Market is a gem of a restaurant tucked away in a Matthews shopping center. As a business their specialty is made to order charcuterie boards and they boast a large selection of locally sourced cheeses and meats. Inside however they also have a market featuring lots of local products, and a sit down cafe serving up salads and toasted sandwiches. I came in here on a quiet Sunday afternoon and we elected to sit outside in their walled in patio area. It was a pleasant place to sit and our service was prompt and friendly. For my sandwich I chose the turkey chipotle bacon without the tomatoes. The sandwich tasted great and the bread was toasted nicely. If I have one complaint it's that for $14.00 I think the sandwich could have been a bit bigger, or maybe I was just too hungry because I scarfed it down in an instant! Still the chips that accompanied it were a good snack and I enjoyed my meal. This is definitely a good spot to grab a lunch, I wish I had more time and I would have enjoyed the opportunity to browse their market. I tried the chipotle turkey sandwich this go round and my goodness had to have been the best turkey sandwich I've ever had. Some of the softest turkey meat I've ever encountered. And it's served nice and warm on some yummy toasted brioche bread. Bacon was cooked perfectly too and added just the right touch to it. Add some extra of the chipotle mayo on the side, you won't be disappointed. Seriously can't go wrong with anything on this menu I'm convinced, at this point, I'll be back again and again until I try everything lol. read more

I stopped in to have a beer the other day and noticed something that really concerned me from a food safety and professionalism standpoint. A staff member was using the meat slicer and, while wearing gloves, took out his personal phone to answer a call. While on the phone continued to handle the food. After finishing his call, he proceeded to served samples to customers while still wearing the same gloves that had touched the meat and his phone. I asked about speaking to the manager because I wanted to address the concern, but I was surprised to find out that the person involved was the manager. I understand that mistakes can happen, but this felt vary unprofessional and unsanitary, especially from someone in a leadership position. I have been coming here for several years and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and experience. Unfortunately, I have noticed a change over time, and it feels like that shift started when the current manager began taking more control and changing things. It is disappointing to see a place I have supported for years move in a direction that feels less welcoming and less focused on the standards that originally made it a place I wanted to return to. I hope the business takes this feedback seriously and reinforces proper food handling practices with the staff. read more

The most notable aspect of this place is the service. The two times that I've been there, I have had T as my server the two times that I have been. She makes you feel so comfortable and unrushed. I also appreciate that every month they have a new specials menu. The only thing I will warn you about is that if it's a nice day, you have to hope that luck is on your side to get an outdoor table. Now that summer is almost upon us, I will be visiting more for a coveted outdoor table. The feeling of going and having a good lunch with a nice crisp glass of wine in the warm sun is unbeatable. I felt like I was on vacation instead of taking a long lunch for myself. A quaint little deli and cheese shop in Matthews, this place serves a well needed niche for the area. As soon as I walked in the door, I knew that fast and friendly service was to be expected. There aren't a ton of sandwich options, but surely something for everyone in a picky crowd. Not cheap per se, but pretty much in line with what should be expected in a place like this and in an area like this. Lots of really good beer options, some kombuchas, wine, etc... I need to come back for a cheese tasting and maybe some charcuterie when I have more time, for now it's just a place for a quick lunch to go. I will be back. read more

I really enjoyed this place! Me and a friend came here on a weekday for lunch and the food was super fresh and delicious! I got the Veggin' Out and my friend got the Chipotle Turkey Bacon sandwich and really enjoyed it. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming! They have some vegetarian options, but not a lot of vegan options other than modifying the salads. We also had a chocolate chip cookie warmed up and it was SO good. My husband is far more a sandwich person than I, but a friend mentioning mufalettas made us seek them out. We unfortunately aren't close to Matthews - the downtown is one of the Charlotte area's best features - but mid-afternoon on a Saturday we made a little road trip across town to The Loyalist Market, whose mufaletta is well considered. Glad we did. This small deli/bistro is a gem of a find, with its locally sourced ingredients and its uncomplicated, inviting interior. Looks like a good place to settle in with friends for some wine and conversation. My husband of course opted for the mufaletta, while I succumbed to my gastronomic Achilles' heel: cheese boards. I asked our server, whom I suspect was manager and/or owner, to surprise me, and she exceeded all expectations. I've had a lifelong addiction to cheese. I could live on bread, cheese and fruit, with occasional crunchy veggies. What was delivered to me were a trio of artisan cheeses and brilliantly paired accoutrements, along with five or so toast points. Let me tell you, our server, whoever she was, knew her cheeses. The first was a manchego-like Spanish hard cheese, the second a washed rind cheese from Virginia, and the third a soft-ripened local creamy offering. Each was delicious and different, with my favorite the Grayson from Virginia. Matched with pickled cauliflower, its complex flavors were sublime. The mufaletta was...good, solid, I would say, but not entirely accurate to the sandwich's origins. The bread, though excellent, was not mufaletta bread and the contents were a tad less generous than one traditionally finds in this dish. The olive salad was wonderful but, alas, also fairly lightly applied. It was perfectly acceptable as a sandwich but was more an homage to a mufaletta than an actual mufaletta. The prices are a little upscale, which is to be expected with the care in local sourcing, and the portions a little downscaled. All in all, though, I give this place high marks for its honest approach to offering good food, supporting local growers and its welcoming atmosphere. I'm looking forward to returning. read more

Always super nice, talkative, responsive and always on point. Might be the best customer service I've had ever. We came back last night and the food was delicious! We both got the corn chowder I believe it was and it was on point, I got the grilled cheese which was perfectly made imo. My wife got the chicken salad croissant and it was very good. Although this location is quite small it is a must try. Their most popular food item is an appetizer: The devil's on Horseback. They have endless lists of beer, wines, cheeses and meats. Loyalist is the Mecca for charcuterie boards, great wines and beers, a wild variety of meats and cheeses and the service is fantastic. My wife and I always gravitate towards a charcuterie board with a bottle of wine to wash it all down with. On my last visit I actually read the entire menu, usually I salivate so heavily over the first two or three listing I never make it that far before ordering. I made it to the burrata cheese, by non other than the phenomenal cheese superstar #UAV, with prosciutto. I feel like an accurate description of this heavenly experience would include words such as phenomenal, monumental, unprecedented and possibly even erotic. After we settle back to earth from our app experience my wife and I ordered some sammy's. I usually go with a muffuletta or the Italian, both great and never short of meat. If you can score some soup (changes frequently) then it makes a nice accompaniment to the sandwich. read more

Ok, I think I've only written one bad review in my life but I'm over this place. We loved it so much when it first opened but since management/ownership changed, we just had another bad experience. First, about a year ago my husband went to purchase some of their fabulous cheese. He was told he could NOT because he needed to make an appointment at least 90 minutes in advance. What? Are you kidding me? Today, we placed am online order for pickup. Order said it would be ready at 1:19. When my husband arrived at 1:33, they hadn't even started the order. I called ahead to see what the soup of the day was and was told it was chicken noodle so I ordered soup. My husband gets home and I open my soup to what I think is butternut squash AND I paid $8 for what appears to be a cup although they call it a bowl. Ridiculous! Glad I don't have an allergy or something.... Guess we won't be going back....sad read more

Service was good, but they messed up my sandwich and had to make it over - grilled cheese and ham was ok, but had way to much jelly on it and it was all over the place when you took a bite. The food is FANTASTIC !! Its a small, warm, welcoming restaurant with the best craft sandwiches on this side of the universe. My mother and I decided to stop by one random Wednesday and we ended up having the best time with the BEST server!! Her name is T. The second time we came in, she welcomed us by name! After that we decided to come in every other week, and we refuse to have any other server. She has our whole order memorized. We walk in and are immediately greeted like family, I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! We ordered the Big Board charcuterie. There were two cheeses that we wanted to avoid. We were told that they could not "accommodate" that request on the Big Board, but they could on a smaller charcuterie selection. The person that would slice the cheese was on break and would return in 30 minutes. We were welcome to wait for their return. The Big Board was $50. The selection that they could "accommodate" was $26. So, essentially, for a $24 up charge, they could not find anyone to slice cheese.
