Amy needed a tomato cage. She planted a bunch of tomatoes and is expecting big things. We were headed to Home Depot, but we passed English Gardens on the way and I said ooooh! What's THAT place?! It was a big white colonial style building and it was pretty. What else would a good friend do? She turned the car around. She said she would probably pay $5 more by going here, but she wanted me to see it. We pulled into the massive parking lot and drove to the corner where a little bird was taking a bath in a puddle. We got out and the bird was completely unphased. This was his safe place. A floral mecca if you will. We walked past statues and fountains to reach the entrance. There were large carts, baby carts, and wheelchairs available at the entrance. I wandered in and encountered sticker shock. Amy wasn't kidding. Everything was about double what you would find everywhere else. There were quite a few half off sales though, bringing it down to a normal price. Here's the thing though- it's like the difference between a Gucci watch and a Timex. Both are going to do the job, but the Gucci is just more elegant. These plants were lush. They were diverse too. And this place was mammoth. I did not make it through the entire store. It vascillated between indoors and outdoors and stretched back to parts unknown, at least by me. Luckily I found a place to sit so I didn't need to grab a wheelchair. A bunch of patio tables and benches were stationed at the front next to the firewood. I enjoyed the breeze while Amy stood in line. She was right. She paid more. The young guy who rang her up asked if she would like a bag for each one. We missed over that since the bags were smaller than the tomato cages. She said no. We jaunted to the car, loaded up the trunk and much to our dismay our little bathing bird was gone. read more

This place is awesome!! The store itself is huge, we didn't even cover everything in our first visit here. But they really do have something for everyone, from plants to sauces to furniture- it's an amazing store. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Quiet a number of sales on a plethora of different items in the store. Flowers and plants are all well maintained and taken care of. My husband and i went here to "just look around" and left with $180 worth of plants and other things. We loved it and can't wait to go back. read more

While you might not find the cheapest prices, I have never had a trip to this or any other locations where I could not find what I was looking for or needed. This location is one of the larger ones so plan spending some time if you love to garden. I came because I needed some help finding vine for my balcony planting boxes and maybe a house plant for my hanging pots inside, I drove past a few other garden places. I have a west facing door wall and balcony with no coverage. Coming from shade gardening, I needed some help. Even with a full parking lot, I could find an employee that could help. The vine for the boxes turned out to be be a black eye Susan vine and the person who helped me sorted thru the pots to get me the biggest. The house plant was not to be found. That employee told me that I should just get one used in the summer outside since it would hold up with all that sun. I figured that might be the case and quickly found one that in warmer climates could live year around. I also found another small dragon statue that I needed to brighten the balcony while weighing down my metal 60 year old chair from the heavy winds that blow up in our part of Michigan. Had a couple of choices. But what really made my day was finding a stand by itself hanger for my bamboo wind chimes. Spent too much as usual when you shop here, but got everything needed in one stop. We've gone here for a few of our landscaping and Christmas needs and this English Gardens is great! When it comes to flowers, they truly know their stuff. We haven't made a large purchase of flowers and mulch before. We asked a question to an associate of where to started and she took our requirements and ideas and helped us choose some long lasting flowers and mulch! There was no pressure, no up-selling and no belittling of us because we didn't have any idea. Christmas wise, they have tons of items and we want to buy all of the Christmas things! We've purchased a few ornaments and figurines from here as well as a real Christmas tree one year. The tree lasted a long time and the ornaments are very high quality (they've taken a couple falls from branches and didn't break). This English Gardens is great and is in a great spot near Meijer. We've stopped in a few times after grocery shopping simply because we wanted to look around. read more

This is a great place for nice and healthy, hardy looking plants. I have bought ficas and bonsais from here for my inside plants. They had this fantastic bush tree for privacy and in two large pots, but it was a bit pricey, almost $2k. The gardens here are well cared for and given proper attention. I have never found a dead or dud leaf often on a branch here. I always want their giant plants but be prepared to pluck down $200-$300 bucks for a bigger tree or bush. read more

I don't go to many garden centers, but this place did seem very expensive to me. There's an entire outdoor section in full sun, so that was unpleasant, very warm. Pretty, interesting interior. Helpful, friendly employees. A great setup for purchasing bags of soil, mulch, etc. Dogs allowed. We will shop here again. read more

Although I find them to be a bit pricier than Home Depot or Lowe's, all their plants are healthy. They had some annuals on sale mid-July when I was there. My mom bought me a Thunburgia (Black eyed Susan vine). It was 25% off. Thanks, Mom! They had tiny Basil plants for $0.50. Other than plants and flowers, you can get patio stuff, and other non- garden gifts such as Vera Bradley accessories. The patio umbrellas were uber expensive. We went home and bought one on Amazon for under $60.00. Here at English Gardens they started in the $100s. The staff is very helpful and knowledgable, so that's a good enough reason alone to shop here. read more

Review for The Peach Truck Tour: English Gardens was very accommodating and friendly for the droves of people who came for peaches. They were very organized for a continuous flow of patrons as they came in and out for peaches. I arrived about 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. I was about 10th in line. The Peach Truck staff were efficient and organized. They explained the process and system for purchase so as to keep everyone moving. Also, English Garden had a coupon for discount for this specific event. They actually started early and because of their process, I was out with peaches and pecans about 20 minutes after my arrival. A little honesty here: I have a black thumb (uhhum, I kill plants, and know nothing about them) but I'm trying to learn quickly and I went in with the attitude of "I know nothing and need to find someone to help me." Also knowing that I was going to spend a few hundred dollars on shrubs, plants and other items I was expecting to talk to somebody knowledgeable. After asking a couple people I was guided to a woman named Annette. She works outside in the perennials, shrubs and tree section and boy was she great to work with. I asked her a lot of (dumb) questions and showed her a picture of what I'm working with and she was able to recommend various ideas. There was another woman who was very helpful, dark hair and younger but her name slips my mind... Maybe Renee? Yeah, she was awesome too! As noted before in other reviews, they are expensive but the quality of the plants as well as the warranty are great. I have a first responder in the family so I was able to get the garden club for free which extends the warranty even further. ($20/yr) Because they opened in early May when I went on the 10th, they were out a lot. Annette said call back to check on stock, which I plan to do. Will be back! Houseplants are very healthy but, very OVERPRICED! $50 for a plant you can get at Home Depot for $12(and, you can return the plant up to one year~plants here are returnable for only 30 days.) Even the small plants sell for $19! If I am looking for something "rare" to add to my collection, I will explore English Gardens. I was excited to check this place out. I had arrived and one employee at the information desk was very pleasant and she provided me the information about their landscaping service which I was interested in. However, the reason for my one star is that me and my fiance decided to have a look around the store since it was our first time there. There was an old man working in the back without a mask in a yellow shirt and he started following me and my fiance around the store making it clear that people who looked like us were not welcome there, we were treated as if we were there to steal something. He was intentionally knocking things over to make it known to us he was tracking us, and then he even coughed at us. It made us very uncomfortable so we decided to leave. As a result I will not be visiting this place again or using their landscaping service. This kind of treatment is disgusting and if his behavior is what is tolerated I suspect many other racist behaviors are tolerated as well. read more

First I would like to point out that the royal oak farmers market has WAY BETTER PLANTS FOR HALF THE PRICE. Besides that, My wife comes in 2 times a week and spends TONS of money here. Came with her to check it out and got chased down and ridiculed for the positioning of my mask (that I was wearing the entire time). I like coming here to browse selection & plan out my garden. I only buy when the sales prices are really enticing - like 30-50% off near the end of the season or on special weekends. The store is giant, with a large indoor shopping area open year-round and equally large outdoor garden section open during the warmer months. I've bought perennials and vegetables and had success growing them - no complaints from me on their products. I appreciate that they have everything - from gloves to tools to ladybugs, etc. They even sell some clothing, patio sets and accessories like doormats and gift cards. Service seems friendly. There are a lot of staff working here - and they'll help you load heavy items into your car, no problem. They can test a soil sample if you bring some in a little bag. However, I was disappointed to find out that they would simply test the PH of the soil and not much else. No tests for the proper nutrients in the soil. Around the holidays they go big on lights and decoration, indoor plants and Christmas trees. They offer free classes throughout the year but I've never taken one. This place is fun to wander around on cold icy winter days, while I dream of lush greenery and scheme which veggies I'll plant next year. read more

I went into English Gardens today for the first time. I'm not a green thumb by any means. I'm a beginner looking for help and I thought a place like this would be the perfect place to get it, right? WRONG. The staff was MOST unhelpful. As I entered, there was a cluster of yellow-shirted employees - none of which greeted me or asked if I needed assistance. So, I approached one of them and asked him if he could assist me. I explained that I have two planters that I was looking for something to put in that I could leave there year-round. He said that he "works in fertilizer" and couldn't help me, so I should go out into the nursery and ask the lady in the yellow shirt there. OK. So I find said lady in the nursery area and she says "you'll need to talk to Sally. Just go to the service desk and ask for her." OK. I have no idea where the service desk is as I've never been to this store in my life, so I ask her where it is and she tells me. I approach the service desk and an employee (Sheila, maybe?) says "Hi! Can I help you with something?" I mention this because so far, she's the only employee to actually seem nice and helpful, vs. annoyed with my presence... I tell her I was told to ask for Sally. She points her out and guides me over to her - thank you! Sally doesn't seem very excited to assist me, but no matter. I tell her that I'm looking for something year round to go in my planters to which she replies "it doesn't work like that because we have winter here, see." very sarcastically. In hindsight, I WAS wearing my LA Dodgers hat, so maybe that gave her a bad taste in her mouth about me? Not sure, but yeah, I KNOW there is "winter here". I replied "what about something like a Boxwood?" (while I know very little about plants, I know that the shrubs in front of my house are boxwoods and they are there all year round, so thought maybe that could work?) To which she replied "Well, we have Boxwoods out in the nursery. I guess you can go look at them if you WANT, but there's no guarantee they'll live through the winter." As if there is ever a guarantee that ANY plant will survive...thanks, Captain Obvious! At that point, she seemed to be done with me having pointed me to the nursery to bumble around on my own, I guess? I just said "You know what? I think I'm good." and left. I'm sure this place is just fine if you're a plant expert and know your way around their store. But, believe it or not, if you want actual assistance and customer service, you're better off at Home Depot! What a failure to gain a new customer. Guess they already have enough. read more

Plants are health and you pay for it! Staff is dreadful... they may be knowledgeable but if you aren't they make you feel like an idiot. When you ask for help they'll call for someone then nobody will come then they'll call again and nobody will come then they'll call again and you will try to decide do I want my home to have this beautiful plant and is it worth it to be treated this way? You will likely have to make that decision for yourself. Sometimes I deal with the humiliation for the plant but it doesn't make me feel good! read more

I've only so far bought indoor plants but they're the lushest of my bunch and they all came from here. Sure they're more expensive than home depot's plants but I also don't have to wash off hard water scale from my plants leaves when I get it home or trim away any dead stuff. ALSO I took my puppy here for the first time and everyone was so sweet to her, even when she PEED on the floor of the patio dept. Yes, English Gardens is expensive. Yes, you can get some of the same varieties of plants at Home Depot just down the street. However, I've had great results with English Gardens and everything from Home Depot died within a year. So, shop their sales, become a member if you're landscaping your yard on a larger scale, and enjoy the fine quality of plants you'll get. I love their selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff. They also have a wide variety of houseplants, tools, windchimes and yard decorations. They carry seasonal items too in the realm of Christmas trees, ornaments, and other items to take up the space their patio furniture normally occupies in the front of the store. Take a few hours and wander around, you'll get plenty of ideas for your yard and home! read more

The manager at this facility was extremely rude to my wife. We made a simple return of a healthy plant which met all the qualifications of the return policy (2 weeks after purchase) and were confronted by her with a very rude attitude. After threatening to refuse the plant or only give us store credit, she finally agreed to make the refund according to store policy and turned to one of her employees and said, "Just put it in the back, it will probably just die anyways." She then walked off without any acknowledgement or further discussion. My wife works in retail and knows that no customer, regardless of whether they are in the right or wrong, should EVER be treated with disrespect or contempt. This encounter, in addition to their outrageous prices, made it very easy to decide to never shop at English Gardens again. read more

English Gardens taunts me every time I drive over to Meijer or Kroger/Target in Troy. I did a stint in a nursery in my teenage years, and have extensive experience in landscape architecture. A certain level of fascination is probably predisposed. In a giant glassed in conservatory are beautiful plants and swatches of colour likely to wither and die in my untended care, or well beyond my budget to simply plunk down in a total landscape redesign of my front yard. The beau may love the idea, but I know what price point the shop works at. I resisted taunting myself with those perennials and glorious "gift" additions that have no real use except beautification and bank account draining. Then they brought out the holiday lights. God help us all. I am drawn like Romeo to a balcony at the sight of Christmas lights, the more the merrier. Intense spectacles can overwhelm but the tasteful arrangement of trees awash in LED radiance got that parking spot filled and me in the store. Congratulations to the arranger and planner of the holiday displays; you've done some truly gorgeous work. My heart cracked at the prices as I expected it would, as the costs are commensurate with the exotic flowers, recognized brands, and cachet they are going for. The floral department is deep and beautiful, with a number of plants not frequently found at florists or non-specialty shops (eg. Costco). Brides planning arrangements, run far away. Service was attentive; there are people at hand when you need them without too much fussing. I have to hope sale times are generous and kind, as I'm left basking in the glow. read more

I just left English Gardens in Royal Oak and very sad to say it was a very negative experience. I shop there all the time and have always received great service. The manager was extremely rude regarding a return, asked me when I bought the item, I said I wasn't sure...summer? He barked the date I purchased it and said I couldn't return or exchange it, too late! I explained I didn't know that was the policy. Very unprofessional, he was annoyed with the situation and seemed angry. Now, I'm torn about shopping there again. I know it's family owned and I really want to support their business, I've bought many beautiful garden plants and trees and have been very happy with them. He was so rude!!! Must be very unhappy with his job, or maybe just an unhappy person. I'd suggest he move on or they may lose more good customers, not just me. read more

This a great place for the Green Thumb in your family, or if you are like me, the Brown Thumb who tries really hard to grow plants. The plant selection is excellent - from the basic to the exotic. English Gardens has a good selection but thats where its ends. I tried their DIY landscaping service. Basically you go in and fill out some paperwork, give them photos of your house with all the sites measured, tell them what kind of plants you like, etc. You purchase a $200 gift card and then they design your landscaping for you (within a week or so). It sounded great since I wanted to re-do most of my landscaping. Well, the process was horrible... I filled out all of my info, gave them very detailed explanations of everything, measured everything out, etc. I went to drop off the paperwork and none of the designers were available. They told me that I'd be assigned someone and that person would call me. It was about a week later that I got a phone call from my designer, the voicemail said he needed to discuss a couple minor things and to call him back or come in. So I called back about 10 min. after the call and he was busy so I left a message to call me back. He never called me back again so I went into the store 2 days later and talked everything over with him in person. At that time he said it would be about a week and a half because they were very busy. Fast forward a month later, I never heard back and knew I had given him ample time. So I called into the store and was told that my designer no longer worked there (and no one let me know). I spoke with another manager and he told me that they would track down my paperwork and call me back after the holiday, at least by tuesday or wednesday (I called the thursday before memorial day weekend). It is now almost 2 weeks since that phone call and I still haven't heard back. I told 4 of my other friends about the program (before this) and they were super interested, but now they won't be getting any of our business. Last note, their prices are very high. I would suggest getting plants at Lowes (not Home Depot) because they have a great selection. If you can't find what you need there go to Goldner Walsh in Pontiac, they are AWESOME and helped me a lot. 6/17/16- UPDATE- Despite the comment below its now 11 days after this review posted and still no one has cared to contact me. read more

I have been so pleased with the service at this location and the east side one too in Clinton Township. At this one when I needed help from the plant pharmacy I couldn't have asked for a better person than Zach. He did such a great job helping us out. I did wind up with a large store credit because we had to return a bunch of stuff that we changed our mind how to handle the grub situation in the yard. The manager was good about helping me get the return back onto the credit card when I was a couple months to get it there. The ladies at the desk were helpful and I was able to find some other items for the house I needed. Things here can be pricey but its well kept, clean and high quality for what I have experienced. read more

English Gardens is a step above a Home Depot or Lowes garden center, but since the location is devoted to the outdoors, there is a wider variety and slightly more skilled employees. The best time to get a sale is at the beginning of the season, but be careful, since we usually get a frost that creeps in and kills the plants. A good variety of seasonal shrubs, trees and garden paraphernalia, but on a recent trip November 3rd I was forced to protest as to why Christmas decor and shrubbery must follow Halloween decor? Is thanksgiving with associated items (hay bales, gourds, squashes, fall themed wreaths) a moot holiday now? I was forced to find plastic replicas at Michael's instead. A great variety of succulents were purchased here earlier this year, and I'd say it's generally a good bit for when Home Depot's garden section just won't do. Poor return policy. They have a sign tucked away that says no returns on Holiday stuff before December 10th. I didn't purchase my item until mid December and promptly tried to return or exchange it on Dec 18th. I was told since I had not receipt and was not in their system that I could not return. I was told they ask for your phone number and do not recall anyone asking me for my phone number. She said there was no way their employees would have not asked for my number. I've been a loyal customer of English Gardens, this location in particular, for years. I've always loved them. But I doubt I'll be back. My husband and I stopped in because I needed a couple of things for the yard. I was taken completely aback by the prices. I know things are going up in general, but the selection of less expensive starter plants was practically non-existent. The only irises they had were $20 each. Peonies: $40. Even the root-stock peonies were $30. I understand that roses are usually expensive ($40) and would have considered purchasing a bush because they were on sale--but the zone hardiness notation was blacked out with on every single one of the bushes I looked at (a particular blue-lavender rose). I'm not going to buy it if I don't know with reasonable certainty it will survive in MI. While I was looking at roses, my husband asked a sales associate if there were any smaller irises we could look at. The associate showed him to some half dead looking plants that were also priced at $20 and said (in a rude tone) that if we'd wanted a better selection, we should have shown up earlier in the season. Excuse me, up until last week, it's been cold and wet! I understand that the stock isn't in the employees control, but woman's attitude was totally uncalled for. I purchased a six pack of cleome (for $13, but I really love them) and a 6 inch Lady's Mantle ($7) to replace the one I used to have and left--and I strongly suspect I won't be back. I've always accepted that English Gardens was a little pricey, but it was okay because they stock things other places don't. What I don't accept is being treated as if I was somehow inconveniencing the sales associate by asking for something I couldn't find. read more
