This was a fun Glamping Adventure. If you like solitude and sunsets then you're in the right spot.

The upper campground - Washburn is further from the water but with nice views of the mountains. In between is nice too, just avoid the high hundreds numbers - 131. 132,133 for wind. Beach access was cool. Lots of green rocks and driftwood for kids to build with. They also had an amphitheater and we saw a ranger talk on great white sharks. Also a nice home base to go your Hearst castle or do wine tasting. Cambria and Harmony are cute nearby towns to see.

This State Park has a day-use area and two campgrounds: Washburn Day Use Area, San Simeon Creek Campground and the more primitive Washburn Campground. San Simeon Creek Campground is closer to the ocean; Washburn Campground is about a mile or two inland, overlooking the Santa Lucia mountains. The day-use area is open from 8AM to sunset, and is easily accessed from Highway 1, has picnic sites, parking, restrooms, water faucets, barbecue grills, and easy beach access (unless you are a dog...) One star down from an excellent rating for two reasons: The beach, sadly, is NDA (no dogs allowed), and the day use picnic tables are located next to the highway.

I felt it was only appropriate to review one of my favorite state parks for my 1000th review…read more This park has an extensive history dating back to the Chumash Native American inhabitation. These people lived here long before European explorers arrived. The park was purchased in 1965 by the State of California and made a state park. Prior to it becoming a state park, the land was used for agricultural use as well as farming and dairy use. It consists of 8000 acres of cliffs, seven miles of shoreline, coastal plains, canyons and hills. There is such a peaceful and calm vibe that you feel as you enter the park. As you enter through this colossal Eucalyptus forrest, you are mesmerized with their size. Clouds flow through the forrest and open up to the mighty Pacific Ocean. I always feel like I am entering a different world when I come here. There are so many fun trails to hike at ocean level, mountain level etc. Abundant wildlife is everywhere. You can also just take leisurely walks and enjoy the beauty of the ocean. Plenty of places to picnic, and a small beach to hang out with family and friends. There is also a small campground but what a great place to camp! Dogs are allowed but need to be on a leash. My first time out here was back in 2021. I mainly walked the Bluff Trail and took in the wind shaped jagged cliffs, caves, and rocky shore. I then completed a long beach walk on the strand that led from the park to the shores of Morro Rock. I saw so many dead jellyfish which was odd. I also saw huge turkey vultures. The next summer I took a recommendation from a worker at a local coffee shop. He told me all about Coon Creek trail. I started on this trail but it was pretty flat and I wanted something a little more challenging. I saw a sign for Oats Peak Summit and I went for it. A steep climb but so worth it at the top. Views were incredible on this ultra sunny day. Last summer I took my hubby with me and we decided to hike Valencia Peak. Hiking from sea level up to 1,347 feet proved to be a challenge but such a fabulous reward at the top. I could have spent the day up there just taking in the 360 degree views of the ocean, Morro Bay, Los Osos, and the SLO valley in the background. We absolutely loved this hike! If you find yourself lucky enough to be visiting the central coast, be sure to check out this phenomenal state park. It's truly one of California's finest offerings. Most of all remember to pack in and pack out - LEAVE NO TRACE.

The campground entrance is…read moresmall and narrow, only allowing one vehicle at a time to pass in either direction, but it was manageable. We reserved campsite #13, and the drive leading up to it was very pleasant. We checked in with the campground host at the end of the road, he was very friendly and gave us helpful tips about nearby trails. One thing we didn't realize beforehand is that you have to walk from the parking spot up to the campsite. It's not a long walk, and it wasn't difficult for us since we packed light, but it's something to keep in mind if you're bringing large or heavy gear. The area is well shaded and isn't connected with other campsites. The restroom was conveniently located near the parking area and was clean. There was also a food storage box nearby, which we used at night. We didn't notice other campers using it, but since it was our first time camping, we followed general safety advice we found online. The campsite itself was spacious enough for two tents, ours was about 11x7 feet, and still had plenty of room. Firewood bundles were available for purchase from the camp host for $10 each, or you can bring your own. This site is conveniently located near two of the three trailheads, which made exploring easy. We didn't see much wildlife during our stay, but we did spot some birds, a coyote, and a few lizards. Insects weren't much of an issue, though there were quite a few caterpillars dropping from the trees. We did not experience any bears or mountain lions at night. The campground is also a short drive from Morro Bay, where we went fishing and grabbed lunch. Overall, it was a wonderful campground and a perfect place for our first camping trip.

As far as the campsite it self, i was a little scared that it would be too sloped, but it wasnt bad at all. We used a tent and set it up on the left side and kept the table/bench in the middle. We still had awesome views of the water. Everything was so green it looked like it was a filtered photograph. You could see the vault bathroom from our site but we couldn't smell it. The smell was very prominent though around the area where the host was staying. Bring a bucket, diapers (to soak up the pee), and thick plastic bags if you dont want to use their vault bathrooms. We didnt encounter any raccoons personally, but did see their prints all over our cooler (locked) and table in the mornings. We saw a groundhog and it spent an hour digging up a hole. Firewood was $15 a bundle. we have verizon for our cell service and had no signal at all. It actually went out about 20 miles before arriving to the campground. We were able to use the satellite option on our phones to send out a couple of text messages. Wish we lived closer cause the drive from Orange County was long. Enjoy the photos

Bathroom/ vault toilets were close to our site and pretty clean. We were told poison oak riddled the walking path to the beach so that was a bummer. Sand Dollar beach was just a couple mile drive south, so we visited there, as well as Limkiln and Pfeiffer Beach a ways north. There was some poison oak at our camp site as well. The camp owners said it's all over the camp ground due to the recent rains and climate. It would be nice if they could trim some of the poison oak back to enjoy a walking path to the beach. We have a toddler so I was worried she would get into poison oak but luckily never did. Nice views of the ocean but Site 29 had a lot of dirt, and less grass. Not the best campsite of the lot but not the worst. We had our eye on site #22... . NO sun coverage at 29, so bring a canopy! When the sun goes down... those raccoons are no joke and aren't shy. Put your food AWAY and don't leave your car doors/ trunks open or unattended. We didn't experience this but the camp owner said they will jump in your car looking for food!
