But, it came to pass that I was meeting up with a group of very special people and we needed a large Kentucky venue to house us. After one of my buddies did some expert sleuthing, we came upon Alvy's Hideaway on scenic Lake Barkely. I've lived in nine different American cities. I've been to many different countries. I would put Kentucky's beauty up against any in the world. It's a geographically gorgeous state and this house will make you think the same. It backs up to a wooded lot with lake access which makes for spectacular sunrises. It also makes for super short commutes for all of your fishing, boating and tubing needs. With a grill, fire pit and swingset, you'll find an abundance of opportunities to spend time outside. If wandering the great outdoors is less your speed than looking at it, the house offers screened-in porches on the main and lower levels. And, let's talk about the house. It sleeps 26. That's not a typo. With eight bedrooms of varying sizes and styles, Alvy's is perfect for reunions, events and other shin digs which require accommodations for a football team-sized roster. In addition to the bedrooms, both levels have spacious common areas and three porches, perfect for private chats or morning solitude with coffee. One of my favorite parts of the house is the industrial-sized tea maker in the kitchen. It's perfectly Southern and was used throughout my group's stay. As much as I like Alvy's, there are some things to get used to. The bedrooms/bathrooms are not all made equally. It's remote. I had to harken back to my Boy Scout days to really get in the groove upon my arrival. While there are other homes around you, the house isn't easily or readily accessible to the interstate. You have to commit to coming here. There's no internet. Leave your laptops at home. You won't be able to use them. Likewise, getting a cell signal in the house was next to impossible. There was a landline at the home but even that was a little touch and go. The lack of viable and accessible communication made me a bit uneasy but I found that if I needed a cell signal, I just needed to walk up the driveway and into the main road (geez, that makes me sound *so* Kentuckian) and the nearby (5-10 minute drive) state campgrounds offers wifi. But, if you're committing to a vacation with friends/family on a gorgeous lake, do you need to be online? I discovered the answer was 'no.'

Still, I enjoyed my recent stay here and plan to return. Barkley Lodge is arguably the grandest in the state park system. Perched high above the lake with a glistening blue pool, each room faces the lake and has a view of the sunset. Speaking of rooms, they are currently renovating the east wing, but our west wing room looked refreshed. Renovations might still be a bit of a work in progress, as it looked like there was a space in the dresser for a mini fridge (but no fridge), and the updated counter in the bathroom was supported by a bare board with some visible screws. Housekeeping could use some improvements, as the toilet wasn't thoroughly cleaned when we arrived, and when I walked barefoot to the bed after my shower, I collected some animal hair on the bottoms of my feet. We also noticed that a couple of lightbulbs had burned out and not been replaced. The meals in the lodge were disappointing. I remember delicious buffets and a carving station while Mae Perdue played the organ and servers scurried around in crisp uniforms. Their attire is more casual now, with many in Barkley t-shirts or polos, and the buffet seemed sad. We skipped the buffet the first night in favor of a local restaurant after we walked through and were unimpressed with what was being served, and we felt underwhelmed (and a bit ripped off) when we got breakfast there the following morning. I asked my parents if the food in the lodge had been "meh" when we used to go there, and they both said that we always used to get the buffet and that it had been very good. There used to be a small coffee shop in the downstairs of the lodge, but it has been turned into the game room, and the old game room is now a room with information on local wildlife. What hasn't changed is the plethora of outdoor activities, the abundant wildlife, and the family-friendly activities all throughout the day. My husband and I were actually disappointed when we realized we had missed one of the educational sessions on local wildlife during our stay. Despite its shortcomings, I have a love for this place that runs deep. I hope that renovations mean that they are improving all around, as I would love to see Barkley recapturing the glory of days gone by.

It was a hot day and the ride for the most part was through the woods so it was pretty comfortable. The horses were great, and they pretty much know where they are going so for a inexperienced rider it was really nice. The guides were good and helpful and overall, it was fun time. Next time I might give the 90 minute ride a try but will make sure to do it when its a bit cooler. Great time and the people that work the stables were great to deal with.

Desiring to wind down and enjoy an adult beverage (or two), my wife and I headed down to the bar. The bar area is very comfortable and has a plenty of seating options. We were warmly greeted by a bartender named Megan who immediately inquired about our drinks of choice. For the first round we opted for vodka tonics and margaritas for the second round. Megan was so kind to hand us a remote to one of the televisions so that we could tune it to a station of our desire (at the time we were the only individuals at the bar). Megans drinks were absolutely delicious (especially her margarita) and she even provided us with popcorn to soak up the alcohol. After a much needed night of quality sleep (I forgot to mention that the rooms are very spacious and clean), my wife and I headed downstairs to grab some breakfast. That particular morning they had the following food & drink options: scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes (complete with peppers and onions), a wide range of cereal, muffins, bagels, yogurt, juice, coffee, and tea. After enjoying the surprisingly good breakfast (hotel free breakfast can be hit or miss), we made our way to the gym. The gym had an exercise bike, treadmill, elliptical, and dumbbells up to 50 pounds...plenty of equipment to get in a good workout. Tragically, my mother suffered a severe fall requiring emergency hip surgery, making our trip impossible. Even though I cancelled a full three weeks in advance, Marriott charged us for the entire stay--hundreds of dollars. They claimed this specific rate was tied to a ridiculous 30-day cancellation window. Here is why this feels completely deceptive: Shifting Rules: Looking at their website right now, that same Senior Citizen rate is listed as "cancel the night before." Zero Transparency: The online cancellation system gave me no warning or notice that I was about to be charged the full amount. Absurd Demands: A 30-day cancellation requirement for a standard July booking is unheard of in the hotel industry. I reached out directly to both Murray Hotel management and Marriott Corporate. Neither offered a shred of empathy or flexibility for an unexpected medical emergency. Their response was essentially: "Too bad, we're keeping your money."
