They will literally give it away an hour before your arrival. We reserved a van and showed up at 7AM. She told us she gave it away "because she can" even though we had it reserved and drove an hour to get it. She said quote on quote "It's my rules and customers like you guys are HOARDERS thinking you can reserve a truck". (Whatever that means...). We tried to understand what she meant and told her we never were notified this and she said "I don't follow U-Haul I follow my rules". I asked her why and she said "this area is super sketchy so I want to get rid of my vans as fast as possible" (WTF?!). She had no solution and basically told us to F off, we ultimately went to a different rental company. Once again this site is very vocal about not following U-Haul policy and "make their own rules". I don't have her name but terrible person with terrible view on business and hates customers. BEWARE. Hope U-Haul checks it out as this woman / location is destroying the brand.

I just recently moved out, as things have gotten shadier and shadier around there. The security/safety around the building has become questionable, especially with the RV camp out back. With that said--the worst part, frankly, is the owner. Charlie is his name, and he basically refused the pro-rated refund that 3 people working at his facility ALL said I would receive. I did a speedy move out April 16, as the manager there told me I could get the pro-rated refund if I cleared my unit out asap, rather than wait until end of month. Great! Sadly, I never received the refund, and even thought the 3 different employees told me I should get it--Charlie apparently refused to follow through, telling his manager "we don't pro-rate". But... all 3 of your employees told me you do...!? When I asked to have Charlie call me directly, I was told Charlie said: "I don't talk to customers directly." I explained I would warn people on Yelp if Charlie doesn't bother calling me back, and his reply (through his employee, since he doesn't talk to customers): Fine, post on Yelp. Additionally, when I rented a U-Haul from them, the gas tank was not even filled. Apparently owner Charlie keeps just a quarter tank in there, claiming it's due to the RV camp stealing gas. But... he will penalize truck renters if they don't return the truck at exactly the maybe kinda quarter-ish level the tank had. Makes it real hard for truck renters to fill up ONLY the amount they use. Hmmm... SO... Be warned. Charlie the owner does not follow through, and frankly does not step up when he should. I moved to another storage facility that provided better rates in a more convenient location... and a safer location. I didn't realize perhaps the best benefit to moving: not supporting a shady owner. I'm giving 2 stars rather than 1 because of the years of good service I had when previous management was great, the place was more secure, and shady business practices didn't impact me. I guess owner Charlie's integrity was lost in parallel with the decline of the community around there :-\ Buyer beware--think twice before using 1st Ave Storage.

They charged me a $117 fee for "fuel charge 18 Gals" (aka not filling the gas tank back to full) there's also a $30 fee for a "fuel service fee". I 100% filled the tank back up at the ARCO a block away with a $20 bill. I drove about 54 miles total off a full tank. They said that I returned it at 1/6th of a tank. Wow. The van had an average gas milage of 18mpg, the total gas tank held 25 gallons. Do the math. Driving 54 miles would leave it at a bit over 3/4 of a tank full. 22 gallons out of 25 gallons. (I used 3 gals of gas). IF I WERE TO BRING IT BACK WITHOUT REFUELING. But I did. So. The 1/6th doesn't even make sense if I didn't refuel it. Also just looking at the receipt again. It literally says the odometer reading when I picked it up and when I dropped it off. The difference? 52 miles. Wow. Yall. What? I'm currently waiting the 72 hours for this UHaul's response about the matter. Will update if anything gets worked out. Would love to get my money back. If you do decide to go here. Take photos of absolutely everything. Get names too I guess.
