The rescue often will put "undesirable" birds that aren't as human social in these pens to LIVE in. Sometimes these birds may not be adopted for months and will be forced to live in these crowded dirty pens longterm. Do Better Great Lakes!!

I knew this girl was the friend for me. One Brick is a great organization for those who want to volunteer but don't want to (or can't) commit to the same project/organization every week. I've done all sorts of events with them, ranging from serving beer at a festival to hauling books out of storage for a library book sale. Everything has always been very well organized and all the leaders are volunteers too. What I like about One Brick is not only getting to be a part of doing "good", but also meeting some great people. There is always a social component to every volunteer event, meaning who ever wants to usually goes out all together afterward for food/drinks. The volunteers range in age, but I've found they're predominantly women in their 20/30's (yeah, holy-single-guy's-untapped-gold-mine, you're tellin' me). It's really a great way to expand your social network and make some new friends, especially since most people seem to do it on their own - it's not like there are cliques. Events fill up fast, so look ahead on the calendar (www.onebrick.org) and I'd advise you sign up the day an event becomes available for sign-up. Volunteering is great because you get to help someone and feel good about what you're doing at the same time. What's great about One Brick is that it is so easy to sign up for events! A regular schedule or commitment is not required, awesome for someone like me with an irregular schedule. You can volunteer as much or little as you like. They also have a pretty wide array of types of opportunities, from stuffing envelopes to helping out with food banks, crafting, to ushering at the Goodman. Something for everyone. Moreover, at the few events I've gone to, everyone involved has been very friendly and there seems to often be an informal gathering afterward for food/drinks to socialize more for those interested. It's been fun to meet the diverse assortment of people that volunteer and work with One Brick. I've just started attending, but this is definitely something I can see continuing for a while.

I wanted to volunteer with animals, and I was frustrated by the larger organizations extremely limited opportunities and complicated process to volunteer. No, I didn't want to read a 50 page manual and take a test just to clean cages. I wanted to make a big difference in the lives of dogs and help Chicago become a no-kill city. Surely, it couldn't be that hard to find an organization with no red tape and an easy process to volunteer. Enter: New Leash on Life. I found them about 2.5 years ago on this Yelp page with their address listed downtown. I later realized this downtown address was only a PO Box which means NLOL does not have a physical location/adoption center. The implication of this is that all dogs go straight from rescue into foster homes until they find their forever families. This process can take weeks or sometimes months - depending on the dog. Don't let the uncertainty of a timeline deter you - fostering for New Leash is an absolute dream and here are my top three reasons why: 1. Unparalleled people - the nicest and most sincere adoption counselors. They constantly check up on the pups, their progress, and making sure you as a foster have everything you need. Not just via email- typically by text messages which means a quick response time. 2. Super flexible - a. Vacation or trip? No problem! New Leash will work with you and your schedule b. Work long hours? No problem! New Leash can schedule a walker to come during the day 3. And last but not least, THE DOGS. They really know how to pick them. Every dog that I've fostered has been kind hearted, adorable, and an A++ cuddler. Every dog deserves the right to a loving, safe home. Yes fostering is a short term arrangement, but it's a critical piece to helping these pups find their long term forever. Luckily a friend gave me a bag of food which I tried. 3 months later she is healthy, great weight and happy.
