It turns out it was the receptionist and told me that Lucas was tired and he was going to take over. Thai Senses was just down the street from my hotel so it was very convenient. I was able to book a massage online through their website. I don't know all the various styles of massage, but the descriptions on the website steered me to a Thai-Yoga combo massage. Booking was easy, but right after they called and asked if I could move up a half hour earlier to accommodate their schedule. Wasn't a problem for me so I agreed. The spa is in a little high-rise building sandwiched between taller ones. I walked right past it, but then I saw the address numbers and walked back, counting down, and there it was. Inside was a little hallway with a security guard in front of the elevator (made me think of the Men In Black movie!). He was friendly, asked if I had an appointment, and then made me sign an In/Out list with my name and where I was going. Not a problem, I understand the need for security. When I got up to the spa, they were already expecting me. The staff were professional and courteous. I left my shoes at the door and was shown into a room right away. The room was warm with quiet music playing. It was clean and smelled nice. The therapist did a wonderful job with my massage. Ask for Mona - she was fantastic! It was over all too soon - I got an hour, but I should have scheduled a longer one. I can't speak to how their prices compare with other spas, but I was very satisfied with what I paid for the massage I got. They hit me up for the gratuity on my way out the door. I rode the elevator back down, signed out of the guard's log book, and I was back out on the street. A very positive experience overall. I was just passing through so I may never return, but if I am ever in NYC again I would not hesitate to go back.

You sign in at the lobby, then take an elevator up to the reception. My masseuse (sorry I forgot her name!) was wonderful, very patient in waiting for me to arrive, asking if I wanted any water or tea, explaining the process and asking if I liked soft, medium or firm pressure. The pressure was accurate to my selection and she really worked on some of those knots! Felt decently sore the next day as I expected. The spaces - reception and treatment room were both set up nicely, clean and comfortable. I will say the bathrooms (which may have been shared with the rest of the floor) were a bit tight and could've been in better shape. It was the coldest day of December and my long, heavy coat was a bit hard to manage inside the bathroom stall. Didn't deduct any stars here since I'm not sure this is something they can control directly in case of a shared facility. *When I originally called to book, I thought it was interesting that they directed me to book on the website giving the reason that they'd need to take my credit card number over the phone if booking via call, versus entering my credit number online. While I appreciate the flexibility and security of passing my cc number over a website this also meant signing up for another website which usually means I'll get marketing emails that I may or may not be interested in at some point or another (aka spam). It starts with the building, which is rough- there isn't even a dedicated lobby. And the bathrooms? Disgusting. I actually watched a masseuse rinsing one out in the bathroom sink afterward with the hand soap. Not exactly confidence-inspiring. The massage itself was just okay. The room was freezing, and I'm not convinced Nan, who did mine, fully understood what she was doing. I would bet she's not even licensed. I booked a Swedish massage, but "a little more pressure" somehow turned into go-crazy-intense deep tissue. She also spent a strange amount of time on my legs, it felt less like a spa massage and more like the quick rub-down you get at a nail salon. If this were a budget spot, fine. But it's not priced like one. The lack of basic etiquette sealed it. When the massage ended, I hopped off the table and was putting my jewelry back on when Nan knocked exactly once and barged right back in. No water offered. She thrust the card machine at me, and as I went to pay she stepped in so close I had to actually ask her not to hover over me. Nothing about this felt relaxing or professional.
