I went to KCU and enrolled in the school's insurance plan. I came in to see Natalie Duncan for a keloid injection. Everyone was friendly, and when it was time to check out, they told me I was all set. They didnt tell me the total or anything, which is my fault for not asking. Anyway. I didn't ask any other questions because I assume it would be the same as every other clinic. Plus they already had my credit card or insurance information on file. Two days later, I was charged $150 for the visit, which is much more than I usually pay for a dermatology appointment + injection. When I checked the claim through my insurance, I saw that they billed over $700 for the whole visit, which is insane. Keep in mind that I was seen by a PA, not a doctor. In addition, my copay for the visit was supposed to be only $35. For reference I saw a dermatologist plus an injection at another clinic ON THE SAME DAY and i was charge $80 dollar for the whole visit and they billed my insurance $200 dollar. So yeah idk how are they charging my insurance extra 500 dollar but this is very crazy. Do not go here!!!! read more

I saw Dr Matthys at the Riverside location. He saw me 3 consecutive times. After ordering lab tests for me that did not give a reason for my incessant itching, he gave me a script for a huge jar of steroid cream. He told me to just keep using it til the itching stopped. It destroyed my skin. My skin irreparably damaged with thinness, dryness and most of all atrophy-wrinkled, loose skin. I'm embarrassed to show my arms & legs. Be warned. read more

I have seen 3 providers here - Swafford for regular full body checks, and both Matthys and Menser for urgent/sudden needs. All 3 of them are so gracious and kind. While I have had to wait a bit at times, it's because they treat each patient like a human being - I know that, at some point, I might be the person needing a little extra TLC, so I am happy to wait and pay it forward. All in all, really happy with all my experiences here over the past 2-3 years and will continue to make the 30+ minute drive thanks to the caring and compassionate providers. read more

Great job! Great care. I came in to get stitches removed on a prior biopsy (benign, thank the Lord). I had something in the bell of my foot / maybe a wart or something. I asked if Dr. Ku could look at it. Even though she had a surgery scheduled, she took time to look at it, and then cut it out. I really appreciated her to squeeze me in, unscheduled. It gave me great relief, and saved me a separate trip. Dr. Ku also had a great "bedside manner" with my first biopsy. She gave me an extra measure of peace. To put it simply, ALWAYS check your visit notes. I have noticed they like notating things they haven't actually talked with you about. These false notes could get YOU charged for something you shouldn't have. They put themselves first over the client and do not get back to you when you've got concerns they'd rather not deal with. read more

I decided to treat myself last year and prepaid for a special. I received IPL treatment of the chest area. Results have left me scarred. The burns were painful and left me scarred. After speaking with the office manager and one of the physicians, they promised to fix it. Five treatments later, and a few new burns, I still have a checkerboard pattern on my chest. Gave up on them being able to correct it. After a year of bleaching creams, etc. , it's better but still visible. A horrible experience that left my skin looking much worse than it did to start with. I'd signed up for a fraxel treatment of the face as well., as recommended by the aesthetician. I asked for a refund rather than going ahead with the fraxel after the IPL burns, but was denied - so I went ahead. I specifically asked Dr Menser about my rosecea before the procedure; What she didn't tell me was that fraxel is contraindicated for patients with rosacea. In fact, it resulted in a lot of broken capillaries across my face. An MD Dermatologist should have known this. After seeing another Dermatologist, this was confirmed. A horrible experience and I'm still living with the aftereffects. Never did get an apology, much less a refund. One star because the staff is friendly and facility pleasant. I like the care that Dr. Mathis gives. However, their office staff has much to be desired. They are not organized. I needed a letter from the doctor for my insurance that I picked up. However, they kept calling me to tell me to pick up the letter. I left a message that I did pick it up. They still sent it to me after I had already picked it up. Then I came in for an appointment and they forgot to charge me for my co-pay. They only charged me for the products and never charged me for my copay. Now 3 months later they are now calling me and asking me for payment. I did pay for the co-pay, but how disorganized. As I said I would give Dr, Mathis 5-stars but the front desk 2-stars. A miscommunication between providers and office staff turned into a nightmare situation for me. Then they said the office manager would call me to straighten things out which she never did. Then, to top it off, they charged me for a missed appointment! Today was my first-ever appointment at Epiphany and also with Dr. Swafford. The Riverside facility is really lovely--very contemporary, bright, and extremely clean. The woman at reception was friendly and efficient. I waited only a few minutes to be led to an exam room. Everything was on time. My visit went perfectly. All of the staff--and I interacted with six including Dr. Swafford--were friendly, professional and helpful. And they all enjoy working there, clearly. Dr. Swafford couldn't have been better. I'd never had a full-body skin check before, and she was thorough and informative. I asked a lot of questions and she answered every one of them confidently and straightforwardly. Since I hadn't been to a dermatologist for over a decade, I had a lot of random questions about various marks, moles, skincare. She never made me feel rushed or stupid. When I asked for referrals to a different type of specialist, she provided two and gave honest appraisals based on what other patients had reported back to her. I can't say enough about how knowledgeable Dr. Swafford is! I will definitely be going back--in fact, I scheduled an appointment for next year already. read more

I've been to both the St. Joseph and KCMO offices. I've had exceptional care from both Dr. Radloff and Dr. Swafford and would recommend them both to anyone. My favorite thing is that I've never had issues getting appointments in a timely manner. I've always gotten appointments the same week I call. My only issue is that biopsy results take a while (2 weeks) which is more about the lab than it is Sunflower. There's an online portal but I wasn't able to log into it, nor would my results have been ready before my follow-up appointment. Fun fact: Sunflower's doctors have a non-profit called Fair and Fashionable that connects with younger adults about the dangers of skin tanning. It's really cool and modern with great messaging about skin care. In other words, it's an overall great experience and the staff really, REALLY cares about you. That's what makes Sunflower woerth coming back to. read more

Couldn't believe how amazing I was treated form the minute I walked in the door! How often do you get to see a dermatologist on the same day you inquire about an appointment? I guess I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time. I have scheduled my Fraxel treatment, and had ALL my skin concerns listened to and dealt with. I was impressed by their medical Aesthetician, Allie. Dr. Matthys is awesome, and I can not wait to see how great my skin will look after being treated for all the sun damage. It's very important that you always use sun screen, drink lots of water, and don't delay in getting your annual skin check! DO IT! If you have a real skin care need that isn't beauty related, don't go here. They don't want to help you. They want to sell you stuff. And if you have an insurance plan that has a higher copay or your visit fee goes towards your deductible, they will not work with you financially. They changed their fee collection requirements without my consent from 10 days post claim completion to 3 days post claim. That is insane! Most places will allow you to make a payment plan on your balance due. I realize I signed the financial agreement but it wasn't for 3 days after the claim completed and I was also lied to by the front desk staff about my options. I spent over $300 on 2 visits and got nothing out of it. They didn't help me resolve my issue and refused to biopsy my skin flare up. The provider kind of acted like it was beneath her to mess with it, gave me a prescription and sent me on my way. If you really need help with something skin related, don't go here. read more

I was initial impressed with the facility, treatment of front desk staff, and the little care package you get up on signing in at your appointment. In the process, however, they request your credit card number to hold on file. Though I thought this was just for security (for use in the case of someone who doesn't pay a bill, for example). What I soon found out, however, is that this is so they can automatically charge you immediately upon determining what your insurance will pay for the visit. Unbeknownst to me (no bill received or authorization to charge my credit card for the amount owed) I was charged for services and only knew because I noted the charge on my next month's credit card statement. I had received no notification of this charge or bill of receipt from Sunflower Derm. They just charged the nearly $300 without informing me of it. I didn't appreciate the surprise bill here. Really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Additionally, they could provide no price on the services or pathology services from a skin biopsy (as this is from a third party, not in-house). Lastly, the charge was all for a physician's assistant, not even doctor. I was given the impression on scheduling that I would be seen by a physician. Yet another surprise. Though on the surface this appears as a nice place, I'm turned off by the behind the scenes dealings. Likely will not go back due to the experience. read more

The doctor dissected me like a frog since had teaching student and I have scars and they wouldn't even give me ointment and bandages after they cut me deep just tried to sell me high dollar ointment and said we don't have samples- said get Vaseline at drug store. I've gone to Dr. Matthys for several years now. Not only is he great with patients (and kids), he knows his stuff. And then some. He's effective, efficient and has suggested a lot of things in the way of treatments that I hadn't considered. All have been extremely beneficial to the care of my skin. I've seen excellent results. I like the fact that he's congenial, affable and doesn't try to sell you the farm. His medical staff and spa staff are always ready and willing to help. And the best part? I see Dr. Menser and the amazing Lynn Swafford. I think Lynn is an excellent addition to the Sunflower team and she has been a great resource for my acne care. Her intelligence and warmth are incredible--one of the rare physicians who don't make you feel rushed and burdensome. Allie in the spa is wonderful as well. Lots of skill here. The biggest change I've noticed in the last year is a huge improvement in front desk and reception training and professionalism. The front desk used to be a bit of a nightmare with untrained staff who gave attitude. Now I tend to see the same friendly faces again and again, who know their stuff and make you feel welcome. My relationship with Sunflower got off to a rocky start when some of their archaic billing practices caused me trouble. I still think they should reconsider how they bill, but I have been going here for 4 years and the issues that first made me unsure have been resolved. I think this practice is moving in the right direction and hope they continue to take to heart the issues some of their clients have with wait time and billing practices. read more

I doubt I could not be more dissatisfied with this place. This is nothing more than a beauty spa disguised as a dermatologist. I set my appointment for the afternoon and was at the appointment 30 minutes prior to my appointment to ensure all paperwork was filled out. I also explained when I made the appointment and when I checked in and out how I needed my appointment billed (I was trying to use up my FSA). Everyone there assured me there would be no issue and it would be easily handled by the billing department. I expect a bit of a wait until I am seen by the doctor, but I didn't get to go back to the room until 45 minutes after my appointment was set. The waiting room cleared out twice before I went back. I had an appointment, but I tried to make the best of it, even though I had to wait longer in the freezing cold little room waiting for the doctor. Doctor Matthys was nice enough and his assistant was as well. I had a minor procedure to remove a blood vessel under the skin which now I understand are benign. The assistant said the pathologist would look at it; I should have stopped and asked her why and how much it would cost so that is my $300 mistake for not doing so. I feel they should have done a better job of explaining that the spot was benign instead of the up-sale to pathology. Dr. Matthys did a quick job of removing the blood vessel, but was VERY pushy concerning their product and services. I needed to use up my FSA so there were some creams he recommended for my fair skin. When I went to check out, I again explained the billing and was reassured everything would be billed the way I requested. Then we added product to the bill after the amount of the doctor's appointment (or I was told anyway) to finish up my FSA for the year. When I saw they had billed my insurance company for the doctor's appointment and billed my FSA for everything else, I called billing to straighten out the issue. The contact at billing said they had to bill my healthcare, which was the first I was hearing of this and she told me she would talk to her manager. I asked for the manager to call me so we could straighten this out. As she hung up, I heard her saying "Oh my God", but I shrugged it off to the fact she was frustrated. Fast forward about an hour and Marisa the billing department manager called me back. Quick turnaround which was nice, but I found much of the same lack of professional attitude; she chuckled when I explained that there was nothing they could do at this point since they had failed to explain they had to bill my insurance due to a contractual obligation. She offered to cancel my appointment so they wouldn't have to talk to me again. I was not rude or nasty I was factual and concerned as a patient I was not being taken care of. I felt as if they didn't care and how dare I call them and question how the appointment was billed. There are many dermatologists in KC, if this is how you are treated when you are trying to work out an issue, I'd suggest folks look elsewhere. Insurance is changing for many people; I know I am not the only one who has to be watchful of how my deductible and FSA money are spent. I don't believe the billing department or the employees of Sunflower Dermatology are aware or even care to understand this. The way this place billed, you would think they were dealing with a member of Congress who pays almost nothing for their insurance. I was lucky; I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket, but now I will have to change some planned things to ensure I don't have to pay a lot out of the pocket at the end of the year. On a side note, I found the BB cream they sold me wasn't my cup of tea. It was thick and felt like some type of mask on my face. I understand it has sunscreen, but I have other products with sunscreen and they are not as thick. I would not recommend it. The Vanicream they recommended seemed like nothing more than Vaseline creamy and I am not impressed with it at that price point either. I can say the offices were aesthetically pleasing and I did get an appointment in a relatively quick timeframe, I just thought it was because they were so far north, but after my experience, I am re-thinking that. read more

I never post reviews but I wanted potential clients to be informed that they charge your credit card without your authorization! It started with a first appointment for a wart. I paid my copay and a few days later was charged $65 on my credit card without my knowledge. Well, so happen they have you fill out so many papers that you don't notice that one stipulating that they can charge your card...anytime they want. I have a great insurance but it did not cover this "wart" thing because the doctor did not code it as a wart. More money for him and no coverage for me. We were not pleased with this. My husband spent a lot of time on the phone telling them that they cannot charge my credit card without my authorization, even though I had signed the papers. They were very unpleasant and at one point, the lady at the billing department would not even answer the phone when my husband was calling. We paid since it was my mistake. A few weeks later, they scheduled an appointment for me (which I didn't want in the first place, I was not going to go back to that place). Later, I received a text message for the appointment THEY had scheduled and I replied NO. Yesterday, they charged my credit card $75 for a no show appointment...without my authorization at all!!! I have been on the phone telling them to remove this charge. It may take a few days and I will be checking every day to see it removed! If not, I will be filling a Police Report for "fraudulent use of a credit card". They cannot do this! Please be aware of this. They are crooks! read more

I have been a long time client at Sunflower/Epiphany and have seen all the providers there but my main provider has been Dr. Menser, who is fantastic. This review does NOT reflect the Dr's there at all. It is the front desk and medical assistant staff that is ridiculous. There's been high turnover but recently, what I was told was the front office staff either was terminated or left leaving only one person. In that they EMR portal system was changed to a different one and noone given their patient access to their portal. The phones were forwarded to what I was told was the corporate office and I had sent 4 phone and email messages that were never returned regarding consultations with other doctors, lab results and refills. No one returned any of these. Finally, I reached out again (after 2 months) because of the same needs, and someone from the front office called me and explained the situation apologizing. They had a medical assistant, Olivia, contact me. Olivia immediate started the conversation defensive, stating she never received any messages, I showed I had refills, that I didn't come to an appointment (it was a sutcher removal and I cancelled because Dr. Menser in the appointment had said that if I saw another Dr. in the time line they could take them out since she was going to be taking time off and I was seeing so many physicians due to a mystery post covid illness) and that's why they didn't call me with lab results after they were returned from extended examination, etc. I explained the situation, in which I was interrupted with her accusations and defensiveness several times. Seeing that there would be no headway with this conversation I broke it down in to a simple request... I just need a refill (because I was in active outbreak). She argued taht I had enough refills from February (which had all been used and I had none left), I again requested a refill of the cream. She pushed for me to be scheduled, in which I informed her I was scheduled this month and would come to that appointment and discuss my other concerns with Dr. Menser. She continued to argue with me. I ended the conversation. I have no idea if this med assistant will send in the refill request or not, which is to be a standing request due to my psoriasis and frequent outbreaks. This is the experience that broke the camels back. I will not be returning. Dr. Menser and the cliniians are fabulous, but this, pardon me, shitshow with the medical assistants and the front office is absolutely unprofessional and toxic. read more

This place is ultra fancy. The 2 dermatologist that my family has seen are just as fancy. The docs seem a little weird and the staff is kinda weird too. I keep going to this place because it is in network with our insurance and our two teenage daughters are hooked on epiduo an acne med (which does work very well) and a side product that they upsold to clean the face called vivite (I'm not sure if this is as good as my kids insist). I need to find a new place because I just don't really like this place even though esthetically it is pretty darn nice. Give this place a try if you like, it might be your thing. For me, I just don't like its stuffy vibe and can order the vivite products off line for a better price and get my primary to prescribe the epiduo. read more

I cannot and will not give them a good rating because of their billing practices. They insist on each patient giving them a credit/debit card to have on file and then they just charge your acct without telling you beforehand or allowing you to set up payments if you have a large balance due. They charged my acct yesterday without warning and completely depleted my bank acct 4 days before Christmas. I have nothing left in the acct! This is no way to practice billing patients when they are looking for help and being charged hundreds of dollars to get their skin issues fixed. It was a huge mistake in my part to allow them access to my debit card. I should have walked out the day of my first appt when I was filling out the paperwork. I had driven 80 miles to see them and was desperate for help. I had no idea it was going to be like this. Never again. I will not be returning as a patient. My Christmas has been ruined.
