The women working didn't even bother to look up at me as I shopped with my partner for some time. I had planned to spend some money on several projects, but felt so disgusted I left. Think about how you treat your non white customers, especially during these times. If your goal is to make sure we don't shop there, well congrats.

Of course, I came into their business looking like a typical man in gym clothes, completely out of my element in this type of store. I looked more like I belong at a sporting goods or outdoors shop. Regardless of my appearance, I walked through the threshold and was greeted by what would seem your prototypical seasonal music and decor. The store had pleasant Christmas music playing and the smell was something out of Ms. Claus's potpourri lounge. The young lady I approached at the counter was polite, courteous, and to the point. She answered my questions about gift wrapping and offered multiple variations and ideas. I came away with a pleasantly wrapped present with a cute little bow for one of my wife's Christmas presents. I even gave the lady a warning that I'd be back with other presents. Through all my warnings, she smiled and said kindly that that would be no problem whatsoever. A few days ago, my Son and I were hanging out in Beaverton, and he suggested that we pay a visit to the Uwijimaya Japanese grocery store, which has a small-ish Kinokuniya Bookstore situated within the back corner. After escaping the tractor beam of the grocery store's extensive Saki selection, we make our way over to the bookstore. We found the usual contained within: manga, magazines, Totoro, and of course notebooks, lots of pens, and various other unique office supplies. The stationary section is mostly contained in the last 3 rows of which I wandered repeatedly. My Son finally told me that time was up, and so I reluctantly checked out within the store with just a cool campus spiral notebook and a cheap olive-inked ballpoint. I could have gone for more, and I will during a future visit.

There is more than one bookstore to choose from…read more There are even many bookstores in Portland beside the big one. Anne Bloom's bookstore is a small well-curated classic. Their sections are well organized and the staff know where things are on the shelves. They have a large selection of fiction, nonfiction, then specialty sections. They have a nice children's area with a young reader engrossed in a book. They have the little table and chairs. They are up to date with a graphic novel section. I stopped in for a new book in high demand. As in sold out online, at Barnes and Noble, at Powells, and with a 6 month wait for the audio book at the library! In its first day, the book sold 150,000 copies, and by day three, it is, for now, a rare book. Annie Bloom's had it! Annie Bloom's is in a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood. So you can bring your book to nice bars and restaurants, dives, cafes, pizza shops, sandwiches and beer/wine at John's, the Multnomah Art Center, and gift shops, or book shop after those. Annie Bloom's is an approachable bookshop which has what others do not.
