My experience was extremely disappointing due to both the product quality and the customer service I received. After purchasing a smoothie, we discovered plastic particles inside the drink, which was very concerning. Unfortunately, the situation was made worse by the response from the manager, Arthur. When I called to report the issue, he requested my credit card information over the phone in order to process a refund. When I expressed discomfort with providing that information over the phone, he responded dismissively and implied that I was not genuinely interested in resolving the matter. I later returned to the store in person and showed him the piece of plastic directly, yet his attitude remained condescending and dismissive throughout the interaction. As customers, we expect both quality products and respectful customer service, especially considering the premium prices being charged. I've avoided coming to an Erewhon ever since I moved to LA almost two years ago, why you ask? Overpriced everything. Well, after a quick trip to the walk in clinic next door left both me and my wife feeling pretty hungry, we figured why not give this place a shot and see what it's got to offer. The store itself is very clean, nicely organized, and features a decent but small selection of everything. I did a quick round of the store and found a mixture of super high priced things as well as some regular priced stuff as well. Afterwards I headed over to the hot food area and had a plate made for me. I ended up settling on the old school macaroni and cheese and these round potato things as well as some turmeric roasted chicken as a main course. I was super worried I was going to absolutely love the food here and get hooked on overpriced hot food, but that's quite the opposite as to what happened. My plate came to $32 and not a single thing tasted that good. The chicken was dry, the macaroni and cheese was alright, but lacked much flavour, and the potato things just didn't taste very good to me. The meal itself wasn't terrible, it just wasn't at all worth a $32 price tag. As a desert, I did sprawl for a $5 cookie that was delicious, but still not as good as the big 4 pack at Whole Foods for $7, so once again, not really feeling it. Overall, Erewhon is not for me. The hot food bar here is not at all worth the money and the quality of the food was just a bit of a let down for me. Stopped by for a quick pick me up after a hike. We ordered custom smoothies and some treat (chocolate chip cookie, blueberry muffin, and chocolate muffin). It was busy at the smoothie/juice bar, so it took a while for the drinks to be done. We were both a little disappointed in the smoothies and pasties. There's nothing that justifies the insane prices of this place, but for whatever reason it is always packed to the teeth. Groceries are pretty basic. They have a hot lunch area, and the food is just as pricey. We're talking about $30 for a combo plate, and it is based on weight, so if they pour a tad bit more, it will raise the price, which they often do. They serve pizza, the cheapest thing here, but it is not that good, and it makes Little Caesars taste like fine dining cuisine. The coffee here is okay. The coffee bar, however, is slow in making drinks; it takes about 20 minutes to get your coffee. This is where they sell their famous shakes, overpriced $25 Bieber shakes. What I was really impressed with, however, was the ready-made foods in general. That huge slice of fire cooked pizza, with kale and sausage was like something I'd find in Umbria, Italia. The pre-made sushi looks 10x better than anywhere else I've been, and what a selection, too! Seared salmon stood out. Coffee: I couldn't believe the shear quantity of brands, types, or variety. Standing at least 10 feet high, their rows are chock full of the best everything. Honey, Jams, sauces, dried herbs, spices, legumes. Even the produce is carefully selected and displayed. You won't see that at Ralph's or Vons, but possibly at that mega Pavillion on the hill on the Newport Coast. The wine annex is small but well curated. You could definitely find better prices elsewhere in the LA area, but they cater to the higher incomes and those whose tastes are linked to cost. I did see some exceptions and fantastic QPR options, so take the previous sentence with a nod towards Brunello, Barolo and Bordeaux. Overall, a shopping trip is costly aside noted from my first round with the slice of pizza, herbal beverage, and bag of house brand whole bean espresso,but I think it was fun. I now understand the hype. We got the smoothie bowls and it was very good. All the yummy smoothie blend you could ever want! However, I wasn't overly impressed with the large menu of options because a lot of them were not vegan or at least not 100% vegan. I don't really like to modify so I just went with the only vegan bowl they offered, but I was happy with it. While waiting, I was distracted by their deli and vegan raw dessert section. I absolutely love vegan raw desserts and if you don't know what that is, it's typically cashew nuts dates maybe coconut other variations of nuts. I was very impressed by Erewon. I originally thought maybe it was just internet hype and overpriced produce, but you're paying for health and quality! I really do believe that in life you get what you pay for and while I'm sure not 100% of the items in the store are healthy, most of them are. They have some really aesthetically pleasing displays and also some really unique products that can't be found anywhere else. I really enjoyed the prepackaged food, the amazing cooked food and salad bar, as well as all the great juices and smoothies! I also must mention the staff...when you first come in, you're greeted with staff holding baskets to give you. And then everyone else in the store is hustling. Broccolini with Garlic Confit and Buffalo Cauliflower are some of my favorite sides. I also tried their sushi bento when they had some type of collaboration where you order ahead and pick up at the store; it was surprisingly pretty satisfying for the price. Erewhon's wine and non-alcoholic selections are thoughtfully curated as well. My boyfriend and I casually stop by during our routine walks to browse through and always end up taking a bottle or two. If you shop regularly at Erewhon or live near one, I highly recommend getting the membership, which is $200 per year to use for the market & tonic bar and get 10% cash back for your purchase. Our cashback for the past year was more than enough to pay for our membership for this year, so it was definitely worth the money for us.Not to mention you get the monthly complimentary drinks that are specific for that month during the first 2 weeks of each month. I finally experienced Erewhon and it was a great experience. Honestly, I social media is over blowing certain things and let me clear things out. The prices aren't bad and they're a lot lower than what I thought in terms of the grocery. The Erewhon apparel, accessories, and other merchandise are super pricey like high-end items. The juice is fairly priced like Pressed and most juice joints. If anything, the prices are comparable to Whole Foods. It's the exclusiveness of Erewhon that make it seem very expensive. I wasn't a fan of their hot meals; they were just ok. Their cold items such as sushi and sushi sandwich are just ok too; nothing different or amazing. I will say, the only things I fell in love with was their smoothies and juice. They are both totally worth it. Be aware of the long lines and elbow to elbow traffic from young kids and social media elites. It's annoying really lol. I would definitely come back every time we touch down in LA. The smoothie is great but my choices have been sometimes too sweet I wish there was a grading on sweetness. Lisa's drink was $11, which wasn't too outrageous, but still expensive for a smoothie. It didn't really taste like Thai tea to me...It tasted familiar, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was exactly. Jokes aside, at least this location is slightly bigger and more modern than most so it's not as cramped, though it still kind of is. They've definitely elevated the ordinary grocery store experience to something; don't want to be confused and mixed up with the poors and too-commercial whole foods shoppers, you know? Depending on when you go, anywhere between 10 and 50 percent of shoppers are just there for the food court, mostly to have the honor to have their lips blessed by those bougie $20+ smoothies. If you went to Erewhon and didn't get a Hailey Bieber smoothie, did you even go? Jokes on us because they have such strong brand recognition, they are probably charging their suppliers an inclusion fee to proudly list them as part of the ingredients. Not many can boast the same level of cultural cachet. The staff is extremely friendly and likely underwent intense training which surely prepared them to masterfully deal with any do-you-know-who-l-am Karen and diffuse the situation by assuring them they are indeed the most important person in the world. As a bonus, you'll get to practice your valley girl accent, like oh my god like literally no joke, I'm so dead right now... So you may be asking if those smoothies are worth the exorbitant prices but that would be the wrong question. Going back to the analogy with designer brands - many charge not based on how much it costs to make the garment but what the market would bear; the price is not so much a byproduct of the means of production but the main deterrent helping to weed out the other in order to form the it crowd (some may call it the fan base, others a cult). I honestly love their pizza and soft serves! The soft serve is a vegan coconut soft serve and the texture is so soft and the flavor is so good. The mad chip one is really good but I usually like making my own too with granola, strawberry, and peanut butter! Their pizzas are also very good they are a pretty big slice for being $8 and it's the perfect crispiness at the bottom and very flavorful at the top.
