I originally got my LASIK done with an organization for which Dr. Donnenfeld worked for. Due to covid, a lot of their sites closed down, including the location at which Dr. Donnenfeld worked. I needed to have an enhancement done but it was extremely difficult to get one done through the organization. I reached out to Dr. Donnenfeld and he was happy to honor the enhancement despite not working for the organization anymore. I was so grateful and happy with the outcome! Very money hungry. He does eye operations not because they are necessary but for the money. I never needed a cataract surgery, he did it anyways. I had to pay extra money (more than $2000) because he said it was a better way and my insurance company did not cover that part. But still since the operation over a year ago I have been to doctor after doctor because my vision is worse than before the surgery. He put the wrong lens in my eye. This review is for a LASIK procedure I had performed yesterday on both eyes, at the Garden City location. I am a female in my late 20s, receiving my MD degree in 1 month as I am graduating from medical school in May 2016, and starting an orthopedic surgery residency in June 2016. My eyesight is certainly important to me as I will be starting a career as a doctor in surgery in a few short months. I am living in Boston and traveled to Long Island specifically to have LASIK performed by Dr. Donnenfeld, who also did my father's surgery 7 years ago, and my older brother's surgery 8 or 9 years ago. They both had excellent outcomes and have highly recommended Dr. Donnenfeld to me not only for the excellent outcomes, but because in their opinions, the service provided by both Dr. Donnenfeld and his staff was as good as it gets, and I agree wholeheartedly. I met Dr. Donnenfeld for my pre-operative visit a few months ago, and found him to be thorough, taking the time to review information even if his staff had already gone over it with me. He asked me multiple personal questions about myself to get to know me as a person and not just a patient. He even carried on conversations with my mother and father! He was respectful and professional, but also friendly - I found him to be very easy to talk to. He also performed a comprehensive examination and repeatedly asked me if I had any questions for him, which I think is an important (and often overlooked) quality in a physician. On the day of surgery yesterday, he reviewed information with me once again, and again asked if I had questions for him. I found him to be very diligent with asking me whether I had any questions (which I did, and he answered to my satisfaction). He also performed another examination. Importantly, he took time to calm my nerves about the procedure. During the actual procedure itself, Dr. Donnenfeld and his staff were amazing! They walked me through step-by-step what was happening, which did a lot for my nerves. The best thing was probably him and his staff counting down the number of seconds remaining - for example, during a particular part in which you feel a lot of pressure in your eye, which is somewhat uncomfortable, I was told "15 seconds left...10 seconds...5 seconds...all done". I had my post-operative appointment this morning, and (no surprise here) Dr. Donnenfeld continued to ask if I had questions, which I actually had, and these were also answered to my satisfaction. He also performed an exam to ensure the corneal flaps were positioned correctly. Oh, and I can see almost perfectly already (drove myself to my appointment this morning), so the procedure was a success! From beginning to end, my experience with Dr. Donnenfeld and his staff was 100% positive and even better than I could have imagined. He has now performed this procedure on myself, my brother, and my father - and we enthusiastically recommend him! For the record, there are about 20 5-star reviews in the "not currently recommended" section from patients of Dr. Donnenfeld, looks like they were all filtered on account of not having a Yelp presence (i.e. no Yelp friends, no other Yelp reviews, etc). For some reason, a 1-star review from a Yelper with 0 Yelp friends and a notable history of angry 1-star reviews (check their history) made it through to the Yelp sort, but I would trust the overwhelming number of 5-star reviews. read more

I went from 20/60 to 20/20 with his laser cataract surgery and inserting a special lens. I have never seen so well; for the first time in my life I do not need glasses. Dr. Donnenfeld did my lasik surgery in 2001. I was a fan. Last month he performed cataract surgery on both eyes. He placed the wrong lens in my left eye. Had I not been proactive DURING my procedure on the right eye, I stopped him from putting the same diopter as the left, I would have bad vision in both eyes today. Post op I had debilitating astigmatism, literally seeing double. Two weeks after the procedure on the right eye he made cuts in my cornea which did result in significant improvement. My issues with this surgeon are not about the outcome per se although it is a shame that my vision has to be so poor in one eye when it could and should have been better. My issue is with his response to his mistake. His motto is definitely that the best defense is to practice aggressive offense. His ego is beyond huge. I think that because he is used to so much success that when he does have a less than ideal outcome and a patient who might be upset, disappointed, or questioning he literally becomes enraged. His answers to any questions about what he says, no matter how quietly or politely phrased resulted, at least in my case, in an attack on me personally. He actually explained why he doesn't like me, used the words 'what's wrong with you' and similar language. These are my eyes, this is my vision. I'm sitting in an exam room, my eyes hurt, my left eye is practically useless, I'm understandably less than elated and his response is to tell me what's wrong with me? I'm telling you- it was horrendous. I don't know what to say to you if you are considering him. He does more of these types of surgeries than anyone, he has good skill and success in a lot of instances. Any surgical procedure is risky and things can go wrong. I had my lasik done by Dr. Donnenfeld and it was probably the best thing I have ever done for myself. Not only was the whole process smooth, Dr. Donnenfeld and his staff took incredible care of me from pre-op to post-op. The results are life changing in being able to see as soon as I open my eyes in the morning and no longer relying on glasses and contacts. I had the unfortunate experience of a best friend tragically passing away 2 days after my surgery so I was in tears morning through night. I was shot in the eye with a bottle rocket a few years ago when I lived in Illinois. I saw the best doctor I could find, the chief of Ophthalmology at Northwestern University. So when I moved to NYC and was finally ready to try lasik as a way to fix my continuing vision problems, I asked my previous awesome doctor to recommend the best in NYC. She pointed me to Dr. Donnenfeld and I'm so happy I went to see him. As an ophthalmologist he did a few other procedures on me before the lasik because of residual complications from the injury. He always explained exactly what he wanted to do and why and then made sure I was comfortable before moving forward. Then when it came time for the lasik he was again wonderful. I have been wearing glasses since the age of 7. My vision deteriorated over the years and my vision was -650 in the left eye and -550 in the right. I wore contact lenses for many years but developed infections frequently after wearing them for over 20 years. I contemplated having PRK and Lasik for years and finally felt ready last year. I had my Lasik Intralase done on black friday. I worried about all the possible complications but Dr. Donnenfeld was highly recommended by a friend. I was told that I was not a good candidate for Lasik in the past due to my steep cornea but with Intralase the steepness of the cornea was not a factor. Dr. Donnenfeld reassured me that the odds were in my favor even though there were no guarantees. The surgery was quick. The next day, I was able to drive to my follow up appointment alone and my vision was 20/20 with both eyes. To me, being able to see my TV and alarm clock in the AM was priceless. Dr. Donnenfeld and everyone at the TLC laser eye center in Garden City is amazing. Everyone is very nice and care about your eyes. If you're not qualified for any type of surgery, they'll tell you not to do it. They don't just want your money. They want you to be well and happy with the results. I got my LASIK done on June 10th, 2011. I was nervous and scared but that's normal. They gave me a valium but I don't think that did anything for me. They instructed me how to take care of my eyes before and after the procedure. The actual surgery was probably 15-20 minutes max, but it felt like forever. After the surgery, you can see but everything is blurry. I just went home, ate, put in some eye drops, and went to sleep. The next morning, I could see. Some things were blurry but that's normal. As days went by, the vision got better. I don't experience any problems with my vision. Today, I went for my 1 week check-up and they said my eyes were doing well and that my vision is 20/20. They also said that the fuzziness/blurriness that I still have in my left eye (the less dominant eye) will get better with time. Overall, TLC laser eye center is great and I would recommend this to anyone reading this right now. read more

I was referred to Dr Donnenfeld by no less than 3 other opthalmologists who said he was the best for cataracts...and he was !!. I am an orthodontist who obviously needs my eyes to practice. I had a detached retina the year before and now required cataract surgery. Because I had a vitrectomy it is a riskier procedure than normal. Dr Donnenfeld made me feel at ease at the initial consult and spent time discussing the best strength for my new lens taking into account my profession.
