Extremely disappointed with Dr. Morgenstern as a health care provider. I am a 28 year old female who has experienced IBS symptoms for years. After a severe flare up I decided it was time to go back to the gastro and figure out what was going on. I met with Dr. Morgenstern who seemed so knowledgeable and confident at my initial visit that it gave me hope. He explained that I needed to have a SIBO test completed because my symptoms seemed to line up with that condition. I completed the test and in fact was positive for the SIBO test. I took the xifaxin drug that the doctor prescribed and did not see a change in my symptoms at my 4 week follow up. The doctor explained that I was a textbook case of IBS and to come back in another 4 weeks to see how I was feeling. I felt like maybe seeing another gastro for a second opinion was worth while so I found another doctor. At my initial visit he said "it's easy to diagnose something as IBS if you haven't ruled out the other possibilities". He sent me for a colonoscopy, and an ultrasound to start. A .7 cm gallstone showed up in my gallbladder and my colonoscopy showed inflammation throughout my entire colon. He then had me complete stool testing, an endoscopy, and MRI with contrast and a CT scan with contrast, and a blood test. Turns out I have Chron's disease in my small/large intestine as well as in my stomach, and also have allergies to a variety of nuts, wheat and soy. I now am on medications and working to change my diet and hope I will see some changes soon. Dr. Morgenstern did not send me for any further testing after the SIBO test and misdiagnosed my symptoms completely. He was not thorough and my opinion, not competent. read more

I was considering having an endoscopy done just to check up on an ulcer that was found on my vocal cord many years ago and that I think has probably long been healed. I had no symptoms or other reasons to suspect any problems with it but thought it might be good to check after all this time. I wasn't sure how to go about this or if it would be worth the time and money right now, so I googled "endoscopy" and called a few of the doctors' offices whose names came up to see if I could get more information.  Dr. Morgenstern's office was the first to call me back. I explained my situation to the receptionist, that I wasn't really sure if I needed this, and that I was concerned about cost. She told me she couldn't answer any of my questions about the endoscopy, but that I should just come in because with my insurance the visit wouldn't cost me anything.  At my visit, Dr. Morgenstern told me that he doesn't do the type of endoscopy that looks at vocal cords. He then tried to sell me on getting the type of endoscopy that he does (which requires general anesthesia) because, although his type of endoscopy goes nowhere near the vocal cords, it is a "complimentary procedure" (no explanation given on how so). When all was said and done I probably spent less than 10 minutes with Dr. Morgenstern, 2 or 3 of which were him trying to sell me on a procedure I didn't need. 3 weeks later I got a bill for over $300 in the mail.  His office staff and third party billing people spent a week ignoring me and giving me the run around. Needless to say, when I was able to speak with someone on the phone I was not very nice. At the end of the week, Dr. Morgenstern himself called me up to sternly explain to me that he "can't practice for free" (lol). He had no interest in hearing anything I had to say. The second or third time he tried to talk over me I kept talking. At that point he hung up on me. The phone call lasted about as long as my $300 "consultation." So, I wound up having to paying over $300 to have Dr. Morgenstern spend 5 minutes telling me something I could have easily been told over the phone for free, and another 5 minutes trying to sell me on a procedure I didn't need that requires general anesthesia. Then he called me on the phone to try and tell me what's what and ended up hanging up on me. It remains to be seen whether I will receive bill for the phone call. If I could give zero stars I would. read more

I've been to different GIs for years, all over the U.S. Dr. Morgenstern was AMAZING. The whole experience started with me calling to make an appointment and talking to a receptionist who was very polite, patient and friendly. Then for my appointment, Dr. Morgenstern took the time to really get to know and understand my symptoms and my concerns. I can tell you from experience that not all doctors do that. He immediately performed a few tests on me and made sure to be gentle and keep me informed throughout the process. He asked me several times if he had missed something or if there was anything I wanted to mention. I was caught off guard because I am used to doctors rushing me, interrupting, or just listing exams I need. Then, he sat me down and gave me an overview of potential disorders in terms I could understand and continued to explain what he was thinking I might have and what we would do about it. Finally, he let me know that I could call him directly whenever I needed. I was so impressed that I let him know that this was the best experience I'd had seeing a doctor and he was humble enough to say that he didn't do anything and that we would get to the bottom of my problem. It's been a week and with the treatment he gave me, I am already feeling better after suffering for almost 15 years! Thank you Dr. Morgenstern! read more

I went to see Dr. Morgenstern for a 2nd opinion after I was diagnosed with diverticulosis. I have never felt so cared-for by a physician. He is patient & thorough (I ask a lot of questions), and will do so much as draw a diagram on the exam table to illustrate his point. He's caring, has a wonderful bedside manner, and has responded quickly to my urgent phone calls at off-times when I'm in excruciating pain. He's conservative when it comes to writing Rx and recommending procedures, and truly assembles a case for whatever's going on. I also appreciate that he's down to earth and direct; the last thing I need is someone racing through a visit and wrongfully assessing what's happening. I am so at ease now and grateful to be under his care & recommend him highly. PS: His office staff is great, too. When you come in with pain, it makes things a little easier when you're greeted with a smile & friendly individuals. read more

Ok so if you have to get a colonoscopy this is as good as it gets. Dr. Morgenstern is really a VERY good, attentive doctor who is thorough and wants to understand what the problem is. He is not the sort of doctor who just hands you a prescription and hopes for the best. His staff is as sweet natured as he is and they make the entire process as good as it CAN be. The poor front desk lady doesn't even eat her lunch if someone who is having a procedure is sitting in front of her and she was so kind to make sure my man got orange juice for his blood sugar. These folks are good people and I am very grateful for Dr. Morgenstern for taking such good care of my boyfriend. read more

I found Dr. Morgenstern to be a very caring physician. Ran into a horrible situation and he met me at Lenox Hill and worked with the head of the gastro unit to fix the issue. Great follow-up and I will definitely go back for my regularly scheduled colonoscopy and endoscopy. He treated me like I mattered and took the time to explain things. I am only writing this now because I was checking to see if he took my new insurance. read more

Dr. Morgenstern told me he would not give me my colonoscopy results report but it would be sent to my Internist. That was in February, 2020. By October, 2020 my internist never received it. When I called, requesting the report be faxed to my internist, I got a call back from the staff and then from Dr. Morgenstern who told me I had received my report in person, which is not true. The explanation for my internist getting no copy was there is another doctor by the same name it was sent to yet Dr. Morgenstern and my internist are at NYU Langone so, not hard to know who are my care providers. My internist sent me a report copy with blacked out photos and gray ticking throughout all 4 pages; terrible quality. This is my 4th colonoscopy since I am at risk. Previously, I was handed a clean report with clear large color photos by my former gastroenterologist. Working with Dr. Morgenstern, the anesthesiologist took 3 attempts to get it right, including accidentally pulling out her second attempt; this from a middle aged doctor--I've never experienced such incompetence. There is something wrong at this practice with this level of incompetence and denial of facts. I do not find Dr. Morgenstern's practice trustworthy relating to my colonoscopy results since my internist was sent an illegible report relating to my cancer risk. read more

Eric cares more about putting money in his pocket than he does about the wellbeing of his patients. Save your money and go see a nutritionist. Don't be part of his colonoscopy/prescription drug piggy bank. He can't help you. He is also one of the most pompous people I've yet to come across in my life. When I suggested that it would be nice if his office followed up with patients once in a while after a procedure, he responded, "Do you know how many patients I see a day? Following up is the patients' responsibility." Eric should take a step back and look at what his profession truly is; a scam. If he took care to better understand his patients' condition, instead of opting straight away for unnecessary colonoscopy procedures, he would of course be less well off. That, is exactly the problem. He would rather do 20 procedures a day at a few thousand dollars a pop than get to the root of his patients' issues, where stress relief and a balanced diet is often the solution. Unfortunately, there is no money in that type of care. read more

This doctor burned a hole in my intestine intestine during a colonoscopy when i was 28 years old. First of all he talked me into an unnecessary procedure. I had gotten a parasite in France, he insisted on a colonoscopy to "make sure" everything was ok... I was trusting and naive. he perforated my intestine "removing" a "pollop" that was never there. I was rushed to the ER the morning after... I almost went into peptic shock. I was very lucky it sealed over as they almost had to cut my intestine. I remained in Lenox Hill Hospital for almost 30 days to heal... He was pompous after and tried to act like he did nothing wrong ...when in reality it was discovered there was no pollop but the way my intestine was bent he thought it was and burnt ME internally. I could forgive a sincere doctor that I KNEW was a good guy that made a reasonable mistake and treated me right. But he was not. His intentions were skwed. NO DOUBT. I still have scar tissue internally many years later. read more

I first saw Dr Morgenstern 15 years ago for a gastro issue and he has been my primary care physician since then. He is an excellent PCP and specialist. I come from a family of doctors (father, uncle, sister, brother-in-law), and honestly I'm a bit of a medical snob. I grew up with, and now as a result expect, a very high level of medical care. Dr Morgenstern provides the old-fashioned relationship-based medical care, not the HMO 10-minute appointment-type care. He's smart, practical, very thorough, asks lots of questions, listens intently, and gives you his full attention; you really feel well-cared for and safe/secure. Some gastro procedures are not a lot of fun and can seem scary or embarrassing. Dr Morgenstern is so down-to-earth, professional and knowledgeable that he makes it much easier to get through any necessary tests. He is very straightforward about what lifestyle changes you might need to make for better health (sleep, exercise, healthy foods, etc). He's definitely not going to hand you lots of prescriptions and send you on your way; he's conservative in giving antibiotics if you don't really need them (a good thing so your system doesn't become immune to them). His staff is busy but highly attentive and handles incredibly well the occasional really-cranky patients who are fasting for tests. I highly recommend Dr Morgenstern if you need a gastro specialist, and if he's accepting new patients as a primary care physician, I recommend him 200%. read more

Beyond his proven knowledge and experience as a gastroenterologist, he proves to be an incredibly caring and attentive general practitioner as well. We are so grateful to be among his Primary Care roster. Beyond that, his standards of organization and insistence of excellence in his staff are unparalleled; Winston, Fatima, and Michelle have been invaluable in skill, courtesy, and competence-- the nursing staff is equally attentive and proficient-- especially Maria! WHO RUNS AN ON-TIME OFFICE IN MANHATTAN? That factor alone elevates the level of service and effective care. Dr. Morgenstern is a person of his word; calls are actually returned and infused with personal attention and vital information.
