I thought that Ernie's Locksmith in Riverdale, Md. had closed. Eric Peratino, the owner of the new mobil service (still going by Ernie's Locksmith) will now come to you. We had a challenging situation, he arrived first thing the next morning; no one else even answered my call. He changed out all of our locks and deadlocks within an hour and a half. I needed 4 door lock cylinders rekeyed. I brought the physical lock to the store and an hour later all four lock cylinders were replaced and came with 4 new keys. Sure. You can say, "What's the big deal about a lock and key company?" Plenty. #1. Many don't open until around 10:00 or later and when you need a key or a lock first thing it's nice to know this place opens at 8am. #2 The keys they make always fit and always work. #3 They have a ton of key blanks and will even replace Medeco and other specialty keys including those new fangled car key thingies. #4 Tons of different kinds of locks for lots of different uses. #5 Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Had locks re-keyed (so one key can open both front and side door) and new keys made. Always prompt and keys that work. They even noticed that the position of the pin on the front door lock was letting the key's bend over time and fixed it. Never needed them to come to my house, but when I take my stuff there, they know what to do. read more

Used this company years ago and was happy with the service. Called to have all locks changed due to mive out. This time 1 of the keys didn't work but wasn't a problem. Gave them a call they came right out and fixed the issue. No problems. Happy customer again. read more

I think it is important to frequent local businesses, but my advice is to stay away from Ernie's! They are not customer-friendly nor particularly interested in trying to please their customers. I have had keys made in their shop and have had them do lock work at my house. Prices are high and the quality of the work is only satisfactory. If there is disagreement on how the job is defined, their motto seems to be 'my technicians are always right.' Go elsewhere! read more

We live in the house my husband grew up in. His father used Ernie's and when my husband first moved back into the house, he started using them as well. In the eight years I've been living there, we've used Ernie's on many occasions - new keys, new locks, buying and installing a safe. I couldn't recommend them more. They are reliable, prompt, and polite... even when hauling a 300-pound safe up a flight of stairs. I could only surmise that the negative reviews here are the result of the old bait and switch routine pulled by some other locksmiths. I was at work one day and didn't have the number with me. I googled for Ernie's and, not paying attention fully (obviously), clicked on a look-alike ad. They answered the phone "Locksmiths" and I asked "Is this Ernie's in Riverdale" and the guy said yes. I made arrangements for him to come out to the house to give some advice on how to secure a generator. The guy was surly and not very helpful. He suggested we buy a huge chain. I told him I would think about it and would call him if we decided to go that way. Something just didn't seem right, so I looked again for Ernie's number and realized I had been duped into calling someone else. Once I called the real Ernie's I got the same amazing advice and service that we've always gotten. As an aside, the phony locksmith called me back and wanted to charge me $200 for coming out to the house and for special ordering the big chain. After telling him that I didn't ask him to order the chain, he yelled at me and repeatedly called me back, demanding money. I finally blocked his number. So, if you're calling Ernie's - or any other specific locksmith - please note that this bait and switch scam is going on. Ernie's is the best. read more

I have a switchblade car key and a smaller regular key cut here. The whole process was quick, the price was fair and the keys work flawlessly. I am really happy to see an honest and capable locally owned business thrive. I drove 40mins to get there and it was well worth it. We've had keys made by Ernie twice, and had our front door lock completely replaced too. We received great service each time. The technician that replaced our front door had done work in our building before and showed up with the specific door handle our condo board requires without us asking. That ended up being amazingly helpful and saved us the trouble of having to hunt down the door handle (which wasn't in stock at the nearby Home Depot). They aren't open on the weekends, but it was definitely worth waiting until Monday morning to have them come fix our door. We called them on Monday morning and they came the same day. read more
