Contacted when deadbolt from interior of house to garage "froze" and would not budge at all. They were responsive, quick to diagnose the issue based on photos, quoted a price, were transparent about the quote being based on that diagnosis, were friendly, prompt, absolutely correct in their diagnosis, and they fixed the problem quickly and thoroughly. There were zero surprised and zero hidden costs. I will absolutely use them again if the need arises. I will note that they absolutely could have said "we need to replace the entire lock" and I would have been none the wiser, but they determined that one particular thing was broken and that replacement of the whole lock was not necessary, which was less expensive for me. This is the second time I used Upco because of a great experience the first time. The locking device failed on my desk at home, which prevented me from opening the drawers, even with the key. Marcello and Jose are very nice and knowledgeable. They were able to get into the drawers pretty quickly. I opted for them to remove the locking device. Also had them re-key a door in the basement to match other doors. They had locks in their truck and asked for multiple keys to test the new locks. They had me use the keys while they were there. Both Marcello and Jose wore masks and put booties over their shoes which is very considerate. I always wear a mask out of respect for contractors coming into my house. Highly recommend. read more

Although I opted not to receive Upco's services and try to resolve the issue on my own, I commend Marcello for his honesty and commitment to the profession. After being trapped inside, even with the door knob being taken out, Marcello noted that if I could unlock the door from the top, I should be able to attach the knob to the latch and turn gently to get myself out. Most other locksmiths would have said: "Ok you're trapped. It'll be $150. I'll see you soon." Not only is Marcello a kind person, but he is also thorough in his analysis. He was the only locksmith in town who asked for pictures so he could assess the problem and try to resolve it. If you're in need of lock and safe services, I highly recommend Upco! I needed a key duplicated - I tried it at the kiosk at Safeway but it said I had a special key and they couldn't do it in the machine. So I found Upco on Yelp with its high reviews and went there. I easily found street parking, walked up, and within a few minutes they had duplicated my key. The price tag? $3! Excellent service, excellent price. Had a terrific experience with these guys. They are in the neighborhood in Mount Pleasant. They trouble-shot our old front door handle, and they realigned the bolt lock so that both things would close more easily. They came exactly when I asked and were done within 1.5 hours or so. I called 3-5 local locksmiths at 10pm on a weekday evening after a set of our keys was taken along with a valid ID which had our address on it. Upco gave me the lowest quote. Plus, their office is located just a few blocks away. The locksmith, Marcello, did a great job and even offered to re-key our deadbolt which we have never used since moving into our apartment because our landlord didn't have the keys for it. Now it works! Marcello was very patient in explaining everything to us and wrote up a very thorough receipt in case we have to submit it to our insurance company or landlord. After a theft at my office, I worried that they'd somehow figure out that the keys they stole went to this house. I'm probably being paranoid since my home address wasn't anywhere near the thieves' action, but whatever. They got my keys, so I still wanted the locks changed. My first stop was True Value on 17th, because they're knowledgeable and I thought they might recommend a good locksmith. I could have just used Yelp, Angie's List, or Google, but I wanted a seasoned referral. Don't hate me, but I often think five-star reviews by themselves can be untrustworthy (although the low reviews can tell you a lot...). Anyway, they recommended this place, and I called. The first piece of good news was that he wanted to come that day. Seriously. He was ready to drop everything and be there by 6! But I had to go out that evening, so that wouldn't work, and besides, I was pretty sure the key thieves had no idea (yet) where I lived. They'd have to see me go home first, and I didn't go home on Friday after they hit my office. So I felt temporarily okay and made an appointment for first thing Monday morning. He showed up as scheduled, re-keyed two locks better than new, and went on his way. That plus the reasonable bill (not exactly cheap, but not a ripoff and no rush fee) would have been enough to get a good review, but what happened next is why I'm going to write three reviews: here, on Google, and on Facebook. I screwed up and forgot to have him re-key the back door lock. D'oh! How could I forget? He had checked it for something else, but I forgot to say "Please re-key this one, too." So, red-faced, I texted him later and asked him to come back. I fully expected to pay another fee. However, he came back out for free. I repeat. He. Came. Back. Out. For. Free. I've called Upco, twice, in the 6 years I've lived in a historic, quirky building in DC. Marcello and his capable assistant are peerless. My problem this week was more complex and involved an old screen door that would not shut/latch and then caused an issue for me not being able to shut my apartment door. You never want to use a locksmith but when you do you should consider UPCO. My partner and I were coming home one evening and couldn't open the door to our unit. It seemed that the deadbolt was broken. We called UPCO and they were at our place within the hour. The locksmith who arrived was professional and courteous and used his breadth of experience to determine that it was actually the bottom lock that was broken and he removed it for us. We later bought a new handle and deadbolt, and installed it, but then noticed that the door would not close and lock. We called UPCO again (after hours) and got voicemail. UPCO called us back quickly and the same locksmith responded within the hour. He used a file and a lot of elbow grease to expand the opening where the latch catches. I have called UPCO twice over the past few months and have been extremely pleased with their professionalism and the quality of their work. It is always a pleasure to talk to Joanie when I call in. The first time I called, I had just moved into my condo and needed to have my locks rekeyed. Joanie sent two professionals out the very same day. They were both very courteous and efficient. They cut a new control key for the lock and then rekeyed the lock. More recently, I decided I wanted to install an additional security deadbolt. I ordered an interior-only deadbolt and, after my great experience, naturally called UPCO back to install it. Joanie sent two men out within a day. They were again very courteous and efficient. They did a beautiful job installing the lock into the door, and they even swept up the wood shavings from the door! I was impressed. I had a visitor from out of town when they came who remarked about what a great job they did. The prices are reasonable and they take credit card. I've been having a good experience with the company. Recently needed to have my lock from the previous owner changed and install a smart lock. Marcelo gave me the estimate by looking at the pictures and the price was fair, I also used a yelp promo and got a small discount. I drove from 25 minutes away because I was having difficulty finding lock & key businesses with a retail counter. I brought a few projects along with me: a lock I need re-keyed and another I needed repaired. After waiting for several minutes at the counter in an empty room, a woman emerged, surprised to see me, to tell me all of the locksmiths were out on calls for "some time".
