So we are on a camping trip and I didn't realize I had locked the deadbolt on our RV. There are four people in our family, my daughter and I went swimming. My husband stayed with our disabled 10 year old. He went outside briefly and closed the door... keys inside. After getting Ernie's phone number from the office, we waited for him to arrive. Luckily, the A/C was on, my son had his tablet, he was fed and hydrated and saw this as a time to play while parents are away! We could see him through the windows... David at Ernie's is quite a spectacular guy. He repaired my key tumblers and reprogrammed my keys on a 2006 Honda-- in less than an hour. The ignition key assembly usually give out after 150k ( one of the few Achilles heels of Honda he said-- believe me when it happens to you, you will be glad you have Ernies to help out) Ye old locksmith shop in Hood River said I had a 3 week wait ( which means I will never consider them again when you have a lock issue you cant wait) and I don't know how good they are since it was sold out to some young uns from the old owner who was excellent but no longer around. It takes many years to get this skill down. David, with almost 20 years experience ( He said Ernie sends him all over the country to learn all the new technologies)was really reasonable too considering what it would have cost to go to the dealer. Saved myself $100 by breaking free the sheer off bolts on the steering column myself and bringing the unit to him across from ZUM's but truthfully I'd probably better be off getting them to do it for me-- if it didn't mean getting my car towed 20 miles. By breaking it off my self I could bring in just the unit. It took two hours with chisels, Dremel tools and an impact driver plus having to remove no less than 10 harnesses and an assortment of screws. David was very professional and kind. People can feel safer knowing they have Ernie's as a resource in the Gorge. I write this totally as a satisfied customer and receive no compensation for my review. read more

We needed to make extra keys for an old lock to a garage door and get a spare "skeleton" key. We tried one of the "big box" stores but when we tried the key it didn't work and they didn't have any skeleton keys. The clerk had suggested Ernies for the skeleton key and we decided to give them a try and have them make the garage key as well instead of returning to the other store. We found the skeleton key in stock at Ernies at an extremely reasonable price. The first attempt at the old garage door key wasn't quite right and we took it back. A little fine tuning and the key worked fine. So glad we discovered Ernies, knowledgeable people who stand behind their work and charge reasonable prices. We also noticed that it is a local business that gives back to the community by sponsoring local teams. read more

Came to our house the SAME DAY I called to make a key for our car. It is a 1998 Ford Expedition with a chip key that even the Ford dealer was not able to help us with. Small town locksmiths with big expertise and customer service! I had some issues getting a key cut correctly at Home Depot (they cut a copy of my key in the wrong blank twice) so I called Ernie's. I'm usually up pretty early so when I called (4am) I got the business voicemail. And sure enough I got a call from Earnie himself about a half hour after they opened. He was very professional on the phone. I was able to make it in the next day. While it wasn't the owner in the shop that time, I still got professional and courteous expert service. Keys work great! I ended up breaking the landlords original key in the door when I was in a hurry recently. I definitely plan on going back to Ernie's to get a key remade from one of the copies from their shop! read more

These guys did a nice job at keying some old locks i have off a military truck. Double side tumbles are not easy to make keys for however these cats made it happen and they made it happen within a business day to top it off. And charged me 25$ per lock and provided 2 keys per lock. Thanks Dave and Ernie for being in The Dalles and the good work. The shop hours are 9:00am to 5:30pm. read more

These guys are awesome. Never lost a key in my life, until I go on a motorcycle vacation, out of state of course. Initially I called another locksmith in the area where I was staying. They didn't have the key blank needed for my bike and were not sure they would be able to make a new key without the key code, which I didn't have, so they suggested I call Ernie's Locks & Keys. I called over there and the owner answered the phone, he was very knowledgeable and said he could make a new key without the code and sure enough, he had the necessary blank in stock. I loaded up the bike and drove out to the shop. I explained the situation and the staff went right to work on the bike, no waiting at all. They didn't even have me take it out of the truck. 30 min. later I was back in business and the way back to the campground with a functional motorcycle to enjoy the rest of my vacation. I can't say enough about this shop, they saved my vacation, were very professional and knowledgeable, and the best part is that they only charged me $20.00 for the service. Today I called to ask about having a lock picked because my keys were locked in my storage unit. I spoke with Shawn. I was very patient and agreeable with him but He was very short with me, rude, and talked down to me. I have never experienced this from any type business. it was very upsetting. He had a lot of excuses to avoid helping me, almost like he did not want my business. I would go elsewhere but The Dalles is a very small town. read more
