Decent sized dog park for dogs who need some space to run around (like those who live in the apartment complex next door). Aside from that, it's nothing special. There's no grass, boo. It's essentially a big dirt field with a hose in the back and some benches. A friend and I just needed someplace to let our dogs get out and run around, so this did the job on that particular day. There was no one there when we got there, and it never got too crowded. Different people from the neighborhood came and went, and the dogs enjoyed themselves. There is seating all throughout the park, which is nice. Plenty of shade as well. The water bowl/area in the back was pretty gross - we just used our own. read more

Not a fan. This dog park is probably great if you live close. I don't live too far and came here for a dog meet up event. Basic for park. It's all dirt and mulch, no grass. There is a hose and buckets for dogs to drink out of, however it's a mud pit and there were lots of dogs peeing in the water and buckets. Benches in the shade. One area for all dogs, no small and large separation. I supposed you can wash your dog where the hose and water buckets are, but your dog would have to walk back through the dirt to get to to the entrance/exit gate. Lots of street parking, but look out for NO PARKING signs on the street. Met some lovey dog owners and their dogs today but I doubt I'll be back with my pup. This Park's open area retains water terribly. It is kind of like a Marshland after a good rain. The free dog section is kind of gross but it has a nice little sidewalk that circles the park so it is good for leash walking. Unfortunately, within minutes of my arrival just before Christmas, my car was broken into (despite nothing visible to steal). My window was smashed out and hidden valuables stolen. Also, there is the occasional aggressive homeless person in the Park. It is definitely an inner city park so take care. read more

As predicted, this park is a solid four stars now that construction is dunzo. There is a giant splash pad area for the kiddos that is now perfect for this unseasonable spring weather. I can only imagine how summer's gonna be. I checked out the park yesterday, and already, there was a decent size crowd of families partaking in the wet fun. It's nice to see some life back into this park. For the longest time, there were construction ropes that left all the kiddies to play elsewhere. My dog and I visit this Dog Park from time to time. Here are the pros and cons: PROS: a) Convenient location if you live in Montrose, Upper Kirby or Southampton b) There is a shaded seating area c) It is not overly large so it is easy to see your dog at all times d) There is no dog pool which I like because it means my dog doesn't get muddy CONS: a) There is a contingent of "regulars" who are cliquish and talk loudly amongst themselves, without bothering to be acknowledge other dog owners standing right next to them b) The last couple of times I've been, there have been pit bulls and other aggressive dogs who've repeatedly tried to attack other dogs. These dog's owners do precious little to address the situation ("Oh Killer, that's not nice"). c) Given the Park's small size, there are times when there are only 1-2 dogs if that many. Gruesome note - The Ervin Chew Dog Park is where a teenaged girl from the Crazy Crew gang stabbed and killed a rival gang member in 2006. I would definitely only go here in broad daylight. read more

This park is kinda small, but there's different parts to it. The dog park just got remodeled. Before, it was covered in mulch and would get very muddy at the slightest hint of rain. Just a couple of weeks ago, they finished a major overhaul, and the mulch is all gone! It's now gravel or something. No more muddy rain puddles! This was put to the test just last week when it rained 4 days in a row. The next day, I saw dry happy dogs running around the park. Even when there was a thunderstorm in the morning, by the evening, there was one slight puddle, and no mud at all. I'm sure that all of the people that bring their dogs here are very happy about the upgraded doggy park. (I don't bring my dog here because she's 13 and not friendly lol) There's a water fountain area, which looks like fun for the kids when it's hot and sunny out (which is most of the time!). There's a playground for smaller kids. There are some picnic tables for sitting outside. I've seen a couple of birthday parties taking place here. There's a small basketball court with one basket. There's a really nice baseball diamond, which just seems like a waste to me. I know of another nice baseball diamond less than two miles away. For months and months, this diamond is not used, even though it's kept pretty well and nicely lit. But in just the last few weeks, it's been getting used in the evenings. Finally! Why do we need so many baseball diamonds? I find it super annoying when people watching the game take up all of the sidewalk area beside the field. There are bleachers for you to sit on, and I've never seen them full... I like to run around the baseball diamond to add as much distance as possible to my runs, but if there's a game going on, I can't. Right next to the baseball diamond is a small soccer-playing area with goal posts. This gets used ALL the time! It's too bad that it's not as well kept as the baseball diamond. It gets really muddy after rain. I see people playing soccer here all year round. Why don't they make the soccer area nicer? So even though this park is not that big, it gets a lot of use (except for the baseball diamond, which gets neglected for months at a time). Sometimes you'll see a guy selling frozen treats here in his little cart. I've also seen a food truck here after some baseball games. I can't give this place the full 5 stars because even though they fixed the doggy park, the rest of the park has some post-rain issues. Running through here gets difficult because of all the water. Let's go with 3.5. I took my pup Zane here for his first dog park experience. It has been a little rainy lately, but the park was mostly dry. Still leave it to my boy to find and go crazy in the line muddy spot. I do wish it was separated into big and small dog sections, but it's a good size with bowls, toys, and a water station. This is a small little dog park that's been recently renovated. It's now covered with gravel which is great because all of the mud puddles have finally disappeared! No more coming home with dirty, muddy dogs. Although the dog park is pretty small it's still a nice gated area where my dogs can run around in. There are doggie bags available and a water station for dogs. There are a bunch of shaded benches to sit at. The dog park is never crowded when I go which is sort of a negative since I go so my dogs can romp around with others. Parking is only street parking which is almost nonexistent on nice weekend days. Another con- no washing stations for the dogs. Outside of the dog park there is also a playground area, splash pad, baseball field, and multiple picnic tables. Overall, it's a cute little park my pups love to visit in our neighborhood! read more

This is a beautiful park with great activities for adults, dogs, and kids alike. There is a swingset, big jungle gym, little jungle gym, water play area, baseball field, and soccer field. There's also a dog park area for your four-legged friends. The only down side is that it's right off of Dunlavy, so there's a lot of traffic going by on the street. read more

Ervan Chew is a great neighborhood park. It's close enough for my dog and me to walk to. I have a 32 pound border collie and she loves coming here to play with other dogs. Sometimes there aren't many dogs here so we make use of the open space and play fetch or frisbee. You can drive there and park on the street if walking isn't an option for you. There's a water station, doggy bags, trash cans and shaded benches in the dog park. This may not be the biggest park, but it's good size and the other dog parents are usually nice. read more

Not safe for your small fur babies. My poor dog was nearby attacked a mother ago and I begged my friend never to take Sancho there again. He didn't listen to me and took Sancho there and was killed by a large dog, his neck was broken! The park needs to be segregated! You don't know how a big dog will react to your small dog and your baby won't stand a chance. We have been crying every day over this. When I get my new puppies, I'll never take them to a dog park. This dog park has death written all over it. I hated it when my friend took us there and can't grasp why he took Sancho back there after I told him not to! We are not speaking anymore. where this park wins: the amount of shade. It's a lotta trees at this park to take your best bud out for a romp and to stop them from chewing into your favorite sofa. it's smallish, but enough space to let your pooch get out and run a bit. my gripes: it gets very muddy/dusty in SOME areas. My dog always happens to find the muddiest, dustiest patch when she is playing fetch and comes back to me looking like she's been rescuing Chilean Miners. Also it could use a few more baggy stations. they got people who bring bags and hang them from the fence for that, but a well kept few stations would solve this. I like this park because i meet a lotta younger dog owners from the neighborhood. I've never been there when it's completely full either. worth a visit if you live in the area. read more

I can see how this dog park would be handy if you had a large dog and lived nearby. This small, mulch-covered park is immediately behind the Fairmont apartments. No grass to be seen, this park is approximately the size of 1 and 1/2 tennis courts and stuffed full of large dogs. There is only one enclosure for all-sized dogs. Our 12 lb pup spent about 30 seconds in the park which was full with about 15 dogs between 40 and 120 lbs. All the dogs were friendly and well-behaved, but we just don't trust our pup being around such large dogs as when she's sprinting she looks exactly like a large squirrel. We loaded her back in the car and drove a little further to Danny Jackson's grassier dog park. read more

My experience today the DOG park was very interesting. What turned out to be an awful beginning had a great ending. When I first got there there were two large dogs there which was great, I thought. I have two large dogs and one small dog. The moment we walked in one of the owners sitting there got up and started yelling at her dog to stay back, her dog really wasn't doing anything just standing at the gate. We were trying to get in it wasn't really a big deal. Seconds later I realized what she was really mad about, and that was me. Apparently her dog is aggressive to small dogs and she was angry because I showed up with and I'm quoting here "carrying around life sized a squeaky toy." I was furious. But I assured her that I would not be putting down my little dog and that she didn't have to worry about it. I guess I was the one who needed to worry about it! Her dog would not leave me alone it kept jumping on me trying to get my dog which was very upsetting to my dog of course. The woman ended up yelling at her dog quite a bit and then finally left. But she was very angry with me although I had done nothing but come out to the park on a beautiful day. During all of this trying to keep myself and my small dog away from this aggressive large dog I somehow dropped my keys in all of the bark mulch that they use as ground cover. By the time I realize they were gone was the time that we were ready to leave. Great! Now this! Then something wonderful happened!!! A very nice lady showed up with a couple of cute little dogs- and I smiled at her and said "hey while you're walking around keep your eye out for some keys because I've lost my keys" you know what she said? "I'll help you look I'm really good at finding things!" Y'all, that woman found my keys! I was so happy she was so nice! It turns the whole day around for us at the dog park. We'll definitely go back to this dog Park, because it's close by. I hope the nasty woman with the aggressive dog isn't there. read more

What's not to love about this place? There are always pups running around, most of the dog owners are nice & responsible, plus, there are plenty of shades to protect you from the unforgiving Houston heat... so yup, I'm a fan! Some yelpers have noted that the regulars at the park seemed a little intimidating. Well, don't let the groups of regulars fool you. I have been to Ervan Chew for a couple months now. While the regulars could seem intimidating at first, they are very nice people. The fact that there are people who keep coming back with their dogs and become friends will tell you how great this park and this community is. What I love the best about this place is there are relatively less "smart-phone-in-yo-face" dog owners (you know who you are!). Most owners here are very responsible (aka... poop scoopers... ) and pay good attention to their dogs. There are also a group of volunteers who keep the park clean & provide tons of extra plastic bags. So if you are looking for a great playground for your dogs, come on by! I am sure my puppy (Ruby) would love to play with yours! read more

When I lived next door to this place, I came here every day. Once I moved away, we've never looked back. The Pros: *regulars who are friendly, and you get to know their dogs. *Convenient if you live in the area. *lots of seating. The Con's: *Wood chips - worst ground covering EVER for a dog park. *Lot of large, rambunctious dogs come here and often dominate the small park so that the smaller ones are intimidated to play. *try finding poop on wood chips...needle in a haystack. *it's across the sidewalk from a playground, so if your dog isn't friendly to kids it gets them all riled up. *When it rains, this place stay wet for many, many days. Only in a drought is the park finally dry. read more

Love this park for a number of reasons: first of all, this park includes Neartown Little League's home fields. The baseball fields located at this park are lovingly maintained by volunteers and are a great addition to a park with lots of offerings including: Dog Park - all sizes play together in a narrow dog run perfect the montrose pooch. Bring your own doggie doodie bags, though there are often extras tied to the fence. Water Park - added during the Spring of 2011, this splash pad is a ton of fun for all ages. If the splash pad is not on, walk to the back of the splash pad (furthest point from the dog park) and hit the red button on the ground. This will start the fountains which will automatically turn off every so often; just hit the red button again to turn them back on. Playground - there is a variety of older equipment here, meant to suit children of all ages. Smaller play area for children aged 2 and under and a big area of equipment good for children up to 11 or 12 years old. There is a rather yucky port-a-potty near the ball fields if you need to use the restroom. But come armed with your own hand sanitizer and napkins/toilet paper...or ready to drip dry. read more

This is such a great local park! I love the playground and water parks! But what I came for was the dog park. We are trying to get Missy used to other dogs at dog parks. This one had a great amount of dogs and tons of room for them to play or ignore each other depending on their mood. The biggest complaint is the mulch that is used for the ground cover. It got into my flip flops and was not too comfy. I would recommend tennis shoes next time. Also bring some bug spray I was getting eaten up even though there hasn't been any rain! There are several places for the owners to sit and relax as the dogs play. And there are some balls that people have left along with a huge water station for your dog to rehydrate. There is not a parking lot, but there is ample street parking. We plan to make this a dog park we come to often. read more

The first few times I came here it was great. There are a mix of dog sizes and it is a nice size for my husky to run around in. There is a station for drinking water in the back. The bad thing about it is there is puddle of septic water or something that smells really bad that my dog likes to roll around in, so afterwards she smells terrible. I'm sure it'll get better in the summer when it's extremely hot and it dries up, so I'll wait till then to try and go back. read more

I can see how inner loop folks might like the location of this dog park, but it doesn't have much to offer beyond the convenience. And don't get me wrong, I always appreciate the generosity of donors who donate their own funds to establish dog parks. But in comparison to other dog parks in the Houston area, it's not very pleasant to take my dog here. Instead of grass, this small dog park is filled with woodchips. Due to the very large, plentiful trees, the ground never really dries out throughout most of the park and you are left with big patches of mud in Houston's often wet, humid climate. There is no hose area offered to wash down your dog after he romps through all that mud, so you're forced to let him bring it into your car. Also, because the ground is covered in woodchips it's really difficult to see where you're walking and you just might step in something you didn't mean to. Yeah, it's a dog park, but I prefer places where you can avoid stepping in poo if you're careful. Perhaps this park needs a few more donors to add the amenities it deserves, but still, you don't want to cut down trees and with the trees in the way, you have the excessive mud problem. The location is just not ideal. read more

It's back!! No longer the flooded construction zone. I love this little pocket park due to its ample parking just along the road, a relatively small enclosure for the pups, and open baseball field. The pups have run of a shaded, mulched area with ample benches for the people. The well-manicured baseball field is perfect for a pickup game or bocce. There's a playground and splash pad for the spawn too. read more

I'm not a huge fan of parks with mulch on the ground. It's really hard for the dogs to run fast and burn off energy. I went on a Saturday at 6pm and the dogs and humans had their own "packs" and were not very welcoming to new dogs or people. read more

The heart is okay. There could be more grass out there and perhaps a pool for the dogs to hang out in. There is ample space for them to runaround but there are not many things to do there for the dogs other than run. Parking was actually not bad at all since the neighborhood around it has lots of street parking. Will visit again in the future and hopefully there will be more dogs to play with. read more

I hate to see this park get such bad reviews just for it's dog park area. As a park over all, it's great. There are two sets of playgrounds/swings (ones for older kids and one for toddlers), a splash pad and a basketball hoop. There are plenty of trees for shade and a number of benches and tables. And people that we run into there are always friendly. It's a great place to bring the kids. Now that it's spring/summer, our family comes here at least once a week. read more

My comments reiterate some of the earlier reviews. pros: benches, location, parking, shade cons: mulch ground cover does not dry out and hides poop, regular owners as well as pets seem territorial, most dogs are medium to largish mixes that play rough, the 2 dog limit is not observed I used to sporadically visit this park depending on the weather but no longer will I visit. My dog was attacked in this park. Turns out the attacking dog was one of four foster dogs with the same owner in the park. None of them appeared well behaved or nonaggressive. Needless to say I will not return. I have subsequently met other owners whose dogs were attacked at this park. read more
