My husband booked reservations for the two of us at 2pm on August 10th. We arrived at 1:50, and waited until 3:15, well over an hour past start time, for someone to let us in. No one ever did. At 2:15 we knocked, even though the sign said not to. But we didn't know what else to do. My husband tried calling all the available numbers, multiple times, but there was no answer. At 3:15 we gave up and tried to enjoy the rest of our day. We didn't Our entire reason for taking a day trip to Catalina, was for the Pirate Adventure Escape room. My husband had had such a lovely experience a few weeks' prior with family while I was working, that he booked a reservation to take me when I had vacation time, hoping I would have the same experience. Despite sending an email each, neither my husband nor I have heard back. What a truly disappointing experience. read more

I don't want to be that kind of person, I really don't, but I do a lot of escape rooms with my husband and this one was not good. The one thing I really enjoyed was the setting of our room, we did the pirate one, and it was decorated really nicely. The rest of the experience wasn't so nice thought. The room was dark, except for some LED candles and lanterns, which made it difficult to do the tasks that require you to look for small/well hidden pieces of a puzzle around the room. SPOILERS!! We had to ask for a few hints to get through the first room, and we would've asked for more had we known there was a whole other room with as many puzzles as the first . By the time we got to the second room, we only had 15 minutes left so we weren't able to finish the game. Also, the second room was completely dark, no lanterns but you could bring the LED candles, and I'm pretty sure there was a puzzle in there to turn the lights on, but it was so dark it was hard to find the way to do that. TLDR: The aesthetics were lovely but the room was frustrating, maybe the setting was a little too realistic with how dark it was and how analog the puzzles were haha. It was on the higher end of price for escape rooms and I don't think it was worth it. read more

We tried both rooms and we had a blast!! It was tough getting through the rooms efficiently with our little kids, but we all had so much fun. The pirate themed room is more traditional and linear and the submarine themed room is less linear and more modern. Our guides were so incredible! We really did have the best time. We had a fantastic time at Escape Room Catalina. 6 of our Girl Scout troop decided to go with Catalina Pirate Challenge. Reservation was easy as one of our friends booked the room and time online. We reserved for a Saturday afternoon. Escape Room Catalina was easy to find. You go inside a building and all the rooms are sectioned for specific names and challenges. Once we arrived someone came out to check the girls in. He was awesome and he was the host. I'm sorry I didn't get his name. Girl Scout troop enjoyed the Catalina Pirate Challenge. They completed the whole challenge and had time left. Our girls love escape rooms but they are selective and this was one of their favorites. read more

My family has done 10+ intricately themed escape rooms so we were a little concerned that this escape room would not be immersive... We were so wrong! This escape room was really fun and had puzzles that none of us has seen before. For five adults, it was a solid challenge and escaped with only 5 minutes to spare. The rooms have great themes. We did the pirate and it was better than some escape rooms in Irvine and LA. Don made it even more enjoyable with his positive energy and fun personality. Be aware that the lack of communication and administrative support may leave you feeling frustrated and disappointed, just like we were. We tried 3 separate times to book an escape room, but there is absolutely no staff or lobby which inevitably lead to an online booking mishap. After multiple attempts to reach staff and no one available at the escape room location, we are now dealing with a lengthy credit card dispute to regain our funds because the agency will not respond. I would not recommend this location during your Catalina stay. read more

All the effects and props were really good and puzzles were challenging but not impossible. Had to ask for about 5 clues. I would come again to try the other escape room. We had a blast, we laughed, we yelled, we almost threw in the towel but made it out!! We did the pirates room with 2 adults and 2 kids (7 year old and 4 year old). We had such a fun time! The guy running it was so nice and took fun pirate pictures for us. It was our kids first time doing an escape room, and my 7 year old did great! My 4 year old was terrified because the whole escape room is in the dark/dim lighting and so my husband held him the whole time. I was nervous that we wouldn't escape since we were told it was a challenging room with only 60% escape rate...so I flew through the puzzles. We escaped in 38 minutes! Super fun and I was so proud that my 7 year old could make real meaningful contributions. He's already asking to go to more! read more

We booked ahead of time and enjoyed it! Everyone was super nice and great. When you first arrive, you need to sign the waiver, give yourself a team name, and a before you start teams photo, and then if you win, the after team photos. You get 60 minutes to escape and the puzzles were fun and unique. The theme of this room is "Pirate" themed. We have done a lot of escape rooms, so the puzzles here were interesting and a bit hard, but not impossible. We escaped within 56 minutes! We were in Catalina a short time and happened to walk by this escape room and thought how fun it would be to book an experience. Went online booked a time slot and then had lunch and reported to the lobby about 30 minutes before our scheduled appointment. Waited and waited and then it was 5 minutes past our time so we called but no answer, then 15 minutes called again no answer. Finally got a return call and was told the employee didn't show up for work. We were issued a refund but would have much rather completed the booked journey. Be wary. read more

What a fun way to spend our last night in Avalon! This was our first escape room experience and it did not disappoint! There are so many details in this pirate themed attraction. Don was a great host and added to the overall experience. There are dozens of clues, all different from each other, that make this challenging yet still super fun. My friend and I signed up for the escape room and the scavenger hunt created by the same owner. The scavenger hunt wasn't too bad and we ultimately figured out the final clue and it was a great way to explore Avalon! The escape room was pirate-themed and so detailed and well thought out. It was our first time participating in one but we almost made it out in the time limit. The owner was extremely kind and helpful throughout our experience and we loved talking to him and hearing his story. He even allowed us to see the rest of the clues to complete the escape room. This was so much fun! I definitely never thought of including an escape room as part of a Catalina trip but we stumbled across it on Google maps. After visiting the website and seeing that it only cost $30 per person, we decided to book at as a final activity before heading back home. Greg, our gamemaster, was very friendly and was great about giving us vague hints to start, and more detailed hints when we clearly needed them (you can also opt for zero hints if you prefer). This room is fantastic for 2 people!!! You could certainly do it with more but it's nice to find rooms that are absolutely doable for only two people. If you're a couple on vacation and you're a fan of escape rooms, or if you've been curious about them, I highly recommend taking advantage of such a couples-friendly room. There are opportunities to work on puzzles individually and also times when cooperation is needed. It's not the most difficult room ever and we did escape in time, but we did need a few hints. Most of the puzzles are fairly traditional but there are some really cool unique ones too. This is the 3rd pirate-themed room I've done (just by chance, not intentionally), and I was very impressed with the set design! All in all, I think this is an excellent room for beginners but experienced players would also enjoy it. For just $30 per person, why not take a break from the tourist-filled streets and beach, and give this fun-filled small business a try! read more

Absolutely the worst escape room we have done till date(and we have done 70+ so far). What made it horrible : 1. Usually in escape rooms , there's some sort of story/video/briefing about why you are in the escape room in the first place(the goal) That was not the case here, we just entered a pitch dark room. 2. Horrible game master who didn't even speak in English. We ask for hints and get a response 5 mins later ( for hints you just scream at the top of your lungs) 3. Items crucial to solve the puzzles were missing. In our case , the shot ball was missing (in the place) : took us 10 mins to understand this and then we asked the GM and he just gave a spare ball( lol) 4. Nothing in this room was seamless , bunch of locks thrown around the room(s) with keys thrown around places. There was no connection/flow from one puzzle to the next. Even after escaping the room I can't even understand what the story was. Very disappointing given the good reviews seen so on yelp , would have given 0/5 if it was an option read more
