Escondido lumber was very helpful over the phone and when I made the drive from Ocean Beach, they were also very helpful in explaining my options and were knowledgeable about their products. Simply trying to find some information about lumber pricing and quality for a backyard pergola taught me a lot about staff at Escondido lumber. Firstly did not follow up with a request for a voicemail quote on the lumber pricing. Eventually I called them back and I did receive some information from a sales person (Dave) who was friendly and informative. However when I ventured over to the store the following day I encountered rude staff (2 females) in the store. No greeting or formalities, just a blunt statement that (Peter) was in the yard. Apparently this is the person I was needing to talk to however, I for one am not doing business with a company who puts rudeness ahead of their customers. As other customers, I came to this store redirected by Ace hardware, as I was looking for a very specific wire in a particular color and width. I loved the signage in the facade, as I am a total fan of retro fonts and signs. This looks like the 40s or 50s and the store has a vintage, old small California honest business to it. I am glad that they are not a chain and that they have been in business for so long. I was treated very courteously and the guy was very patient and knowledgeable. I will come back for other needs related. I loved the atmosphere and customer service and the community feeling. Plus my wires were only $5 when I pay $20 for similar at Home Depot! read more

No masks on the staff. What pandemic? They did have what I was looking for and did cut some wood for me, but I felt uncomfortable. The wood cutting did not go smoothly as the guy who was on that day didn't seem like he was use to converting inches to feet and vice versa. I think I'd try another place for future needs. read more

UNBELIVABLE! We ordered wood from them (we are a company that would have been placing regular orders with them). Not only were their prices much higher than a different local lumber yard, we kindly asked if there was any way they could price match and got scoffed at on the phone. They were exceptionally rude on the phone and didn't really care whether we ordered from them or not. Much to our dismay, we still placed an order with them because they were the only one in the area with the material we needed on hand at that time. It took 2-3 days after we asked for a quote for them to get back to us. We finally heard back from them and they said it would be delivered within 1 day. It was not! Whats worse is we had a payment issue that we called and got resolved and someone from their company left a negative review about our business for all of our customers to see! This is an unscrupulous business, do NOT spend money here!!! I purchased some lumber last night for a project my family was working on, I gave them my shopping list, paid for it and they loaded it in my car. The receipt says right on top that they accept returns with receipt in 45 days. I came back next morning to return the lumber (family changed their mind on the project) and the manager, Peter, was refusing to refund my money for the 2x10x10, saying that they had cut a 2x10x20 in half because they were out of stock of the 2x10x10. I explained that I didn't ask for a cut, and I was not told that any cuts would need to be made, he then said he would refund but charge a 25 percent "restocking fee"!!! (They were out of stock on their 2x10x10, but I had to pay their restocking fee???!) It cost me 11 dollars for the "privilege" of shopping at that horrible store. DON'T DO IT!!! I have been looking online for raised garden bed kits. During my search, I learned that natural red cedar or redwood is best when building a vegetable garden. I was not able to find the size of wood I need at a big box store website so I decided to call Escondido Lumber to see if they had the size I needed. I spoke with Pete and he was very knowledgeable and kind! He told me the best types of natural wood that repels termites, (Western red cedar and con heart redwood), gave me cost effective ideas on size of wood to use, said he would cut the planks to size at no charge, and that lining the bottom using hardwood cloth is way better than chicken wire to keep gophers from digging up from under the garden. I love the fact this is a family owned business and not some big chain store! I rate Pete's customer service as A+++++++++++! I will be purchasing all of my raised garden bed supplies from them next week after our heat wave is over. read more

Ok we all have gotten used to going to the big box stores and forgot about the local hardware store. Coming from NYC this is a great find for me. It is very large old school hardware store. Yes, it looks old and a bit dated but that is what makes it so great. They have all those little widgets you need but also have a lot of brand name stuff I didn't think they would carry. I remember seeing a David Letterman and J Seinfeld show where all Dave wanted to do was go in an older hardware store and smell it. I would visit just to look around, if you are a do it yourself you know what I am talking about. I picked up a Green Mountain BBQ and they were very helpful in helping me pick out the one that suited my needs which was the smaller version. They never tried selling me anything I didn't need and actually did the opposite. It was great to deal with a store that was privately owned and the employees cared about the business and weren't just showing up for work. Thanks for the grille and you guys should advertise as GMG's are hot sellers and without research I would have never thought to walk in your store but I am glad I did. Thanks!!! read more

Home Depot sent me to this store which I never knew existed. What a happy surprise! It has been in Escondido since the 1930's and is family owned. Peter, the owner, is knowledgeable and can answer any question intelligently. They have a large lumber yard and can give very specific advice. They are friendly and service oriented. They went out of their way to pick out choice redwood for our garden boxes! They cut the lumber to size for 4x8 boxes and screening for the bottoms . Threw in a box of screws and we were set! All we had to do was take the redwood home and assemble the garden beds. Peter made what would have been a chore into a quick easy project! The boxes are sturdy, look great and were less expensive than the "kits" sold in other stores! We're really happy! So nice to get personalized service these days! read more

They were AMAZING! Sebastian went out of his way to help out my dad and I with a drawer that required assembling and I had problems with. He even washed his hands to make sure he didn't get any marks on the white drawer, even when I said it was okay....haha. This place truly CARES about the customers and going the extra mile.
