Where to start! Well how about with the Oxtail Empanadas? These were so good they could be a meal if you order more than two! The meat was tender, well seasoned and plentiful. Then came the Paella for 2. Beautiful saffron rice with lots and lots of seafood, Spanish chorizo, peas and perfectly seasoned. The desert pear drinks were delicious and were beautiful to look at. Everything was served in lovely dishes with beautiful garnishes. If you haven't been yet hurry over. Can't wait to go back. Sadly we went to enjoy a night out. We were seated for our 5pm reservation however by 5:40pm we were not even offered to take our drink or appetizer order. This is not our first time at the restaurant, our first time was lovely. The establishment has a great owner but bad employees. read more

Fantastic Date-Night Spot!! My girlfriend and I have been here twice. Once on Valentine's Day and the other just because. They presented us a fantastic five-course (seven-course?) meal for V-Day which was set inside with a very romantic ambience. The only downside was that five-courses is a lot more food than we thought! All of it was so good. Come hungry. The other random occasion happened to have a live band while we dined outside. Again, the ambience is amazing at this place and the cocktails are beyond good. I have noticed the waiter staff can be a little overwhelmed so anticipate waiting a bit for your cocktails if you are ordering multiple rounds. read more

This was a fantastic meal! Owner-operator, Isaac, shared his knowledge about this historical house/restaurant and really showed his affection for food. Each dish was better than the last including oxtail empanadas, duck puffy taco, and then the chicken-fried ribeye. I choose to believe that our sad experience had to do with the fact that they haven't been reopened for too long. I'd like to comment on the food but we never got to taste it. We had to leave because we got tired of waiting. We wandered around the patio wondering how to get inside, no courtesy "may I help you" or anything. Then we walked all the way around to get inside the front entrance where there was no hostess. A busboy sat us and we waited, waited, waited and waited. Very unwelcoming experience. Delicious food, horrible service...Chef was awesome to accommodate dietary restriction options, but waited 30+min on single beers to arrive, checks took another 45+min to correctly distribute. Seemed like a mgmt issue as we were told servers had been sent home, only one server with an ordering POS system. Will still most likely give another chance for the food. read more

Food was great, atmosphere was great, but needs better management. Only one waiter was placed in charge of all of the tables outside, and he was spread too thin. As a result we received subpar service and it was next to impossible to flag down our waiter whenever we needed something (like to order-- it took 1 entire hour before the waiter took our order from the time we sat down at our reserved table.) Cardboard boxes littered the back parking lot, blocking a slot in an otherwise full lot. Gave off a negative, messy impression when we arrived, but in retrospect was in line with the rest of the disappointments. The food saved the experience. read more

If you ever have the (mis)fortune of traveling to McAllen, TX...you totally need to check this place out. I've eaten here one time, and it's not quite my style. There's just something about tiny, expensive portions and flowers on my plate that doesn't work for me. Perhaps I haven't spent enough time enjoying the finer things in life...whatever. My date coughed up $140 for a bottle of wine, an appetizer, and entrees for each of us...probably the most expensive date I've ever been on. Moving on! When I go home to visit, my friends and I have pretty much planned to spend at least one evening here. A tradition that started last August, when I went for my friends' graduation from college. Hanging out, drinking whatever tickled our fancies, until one of the guys asked the girls at the table next to us what their mint-green martinis were. CUCUMBER! And the tradition was born. I haven't been able to find a place in Austin with cucumber martinis...which are delicious, BTW, if you couldn't tell by my excitement (yay!). The glasses are rimmed with salt and Lucas, which is like a tamarindo (what is this in English?) powder. We usually sit in the bar area, which doesn't seem to get too incredibly crowded...the clientele are mostly over, say 25, I guess. There have been a couple times when its overrun by stupid frat guys (around the Holidays and spring break) and their crazy drunken behavior. Sometimes we opt to sit outside, on the beautiful, spacious patio. The patio is usually pretty packed, mostly because there's a jazz band that plays on the weekends. Not the type of thing I'm used to experiencing in the Valley, but they're great and a good escape. McAllen also has a monthly (I think) Art Walk, in which several museums are open late and Espana features some artwork as well. These nights are always crazy busy, too. I believe Espana has potential, however, it's not quite there just yet. I went in for an early celebratory dinner to beat the crowd and found the service to be lacking due to experience and the food was good but also slightly lacking based on menu description. The cocktail I ordered was strong and good and the decor is nice. The atmosphere is a bit stuffy as there was no music and the crowd was a bit older. My server was polite but didn't explain the seasonal cheeses and meats featured in the charcuterie nor did they bring an extra plate to discard shells and such from our paella platter. The paella was good but it also lacked the chicken and pork listed in the description as well as the green peas and--most importantly--that elusive paella crust. I also found it odd there were no specials featured. Furthermore, it seems they are really trying to make money back from their investment by charging $4 per glass of tea, which is ridiculous. I'm not sure I would return, but if I did it may be for wine and charcuterie on the patio outside; and be sure to research the wine as there is no sommelier, or at least not when I went, and again the serving staff seems young and/or inexperienced and not always knowledgeable about the wine selection or dishes for that matter. read more

España is, without doubt, a top-notch restaurant with delicious Spanish food. I have visited Barcelona and Mallorca - the Spaniards would be impressed with España's Paella. Fresh seafood, well-selected and perfectly prepared meats, great wine selection, exciting ambiance, beautiful art, and classy décor; España could compete in a much larger city, and we are blessed to have it in McAllen. The outdoor patio has an intimacy tucked in an historic neighborhood rather than many near traffic noise. And, Isaac Guerra, the owner, attracts top musical talent from outside of the Valley as well as the best RGV entertainers. read more

I called in days after the reservation to confirm it and I was told I would be receiving a call back to confirm my reservation only because the menu for Valentines was not yet ready, a week later now all real dining places are booked and España has yet to call me back to confirm, and that's because I was told I would have a for sure reservation because I set mine up in advance, I guess they just forgot about me. All the one star ratings are true if you asked me, don't waste your time or money here folks, there are real fine dining places here in McAllen they are not hard to find! Skip Salt and go straight here. The food is better and the atmosphere, while eclectic, is more relaxed. A great place for date night because it's just more of a relaxed feel. My wife and I have eaten around the world, and this is a top notch restaurant. The Desert Pear margarita was a hit, and we had the crispy duck and ox tail empanadas (amazing). I wish we had more of an apatite to eat more. We will be back, and will also make a specific trip just so we can eat one of their deserts. Ask for Justin to be your waiter! His service was quick and very polite, we'll be asking for him next time we come back. In all, a wonderful experience, can't wait to go back. read more

Awful service, food was cold, waiter would disappear for 30 min at a time and was very rude. The only non alcoholic drinks they offered was Diet Coke. No social distancing, no masks required. If they can't handle the amount of people, they should not have re-opened. read more

This place is about as classy as McAllen gets. With that said, this place is ideal for going out in style and having some drinks on a Fri/Sat night. This is the kind of place that orders the fight and doesn't charge cover because schmucks don't even step into the place, you're gonna find people with class here. Espana is one of those gems that you're always surprised (and grateful) to find. McAllen is the land of chain restaurants and finding a local joint with great service and delicious food is a real treat. It is tradition for us to celebrate my husband's birthday there (he loves the duck au poir) and I like the flaming desserts. The service is always great and the owner comes table to table to check on you--always a sign of a high quality place. If you're looking to drop some cash, but have a great dining experience, I'd definitely recommend this place. read more
