Our small group consisted of one experienced rider, one rider with some experience, and two novice riders. The girls who led the ride were both amazing and were eager to talk about the history of the island and our horses, which were all rescues, save one. They shared stories of how the horses got their names, as well as how they'd survived on the island with no power for almost a year after a hurricane destroyed the island's infrastructure. Our ride took us through the old sugar plantations and onto the beach before taking us into the water. Before entering the water, we were warned about the behaviors to watch for in our horses that would indicate the horse was about to lay down in the water, as they like to do sometimes and what to do if the horse did lay down. My horse, Alien, apparently loves the water so much that he moans the entire time, and he loves swimming! This was not your typical cruise ship excursion where you walk your horse in the shallow water. We were in about 5' of water, and it was AWESOME!!! I felt like I could have stayed and ridden horses on the beach and in the water all day, and yes, Alien made his "ohhhh this feels so good" noises the entire time we were in the water. My shorts were completely soaked, but I expected that and I wasn't bothered by it! The warm sun meant they dried quickly. I rode barefoot because I was wearing flip flops, and I didn't want to risk losing them on the ride. It was my choice, but I recommend if you're not comfortable with riding barefoot, wear something like water shoes, old sneakers, or Crocs. I booked the tour through Viator since we didn't have a car during this trip. Recommended to wear long sleeves that are good for hot weather, mosquitoes spray, face mask, eye protection for the dust and either shoes you don't care for or shoe covers with your shoes and bring water. My 10-year-old daughter was really nervous at first, but Joshua stayed right by her side, encouraging her with so much kindness. By the end, she said it was her favorite experience on the island! Even my teenage son--who I wasn't sure would enjoy it--had the biggest smile on his face the whole time and said he loved it!! That alone says everything! One of the highlights was riding the horses into the water at the beach... such a cool, unforgettable moment (we only wished we could've stayed there longer!). They also took tons of photos for us, which was such a thoughtful surprise, and even AirDropped them at the end. Every single person in our group of 7 had a blast. Highly recommend--this was truly a core memory for our family!

It is now called Hacienda Buena Vista. It is located in the same place in Palmas del Mar. Just follow the signs to the Equestrian center. They now have a website (haciendabuenavista.com), as well as FB and IG pages. This makes it so much easier to reach them and get up to date info. Before it was a hassle. You can reserve a tour via phone or the website. Unfortunately, we didn't know this. I was used to the old ways of just showing up. We wanted a pony ride for our son. I'm sure they will take walk-ins if there's space available. Not this time. It was Sunday, which seems to be their busiest day. Plus they were short staffed. They told us they didn't have anybody available for another 40min. My wife didn't want to wait that long so we left. Next time. The guy suggested we reserve for Saturday which is less busy. I'll keep that in mind when making a reservation. In addition to horseback riding and pony rides, they also offer a stable tour and bike rides. They also breed and train horses. I believe they also giving riding lessons. Just ask.
