Esther's is back! It's my new favorite store again!! Woohoo!! There was a time years ago when I enjoyed going into Esther's on occasion during lunch, and browsing all the fabric, even if I didn't need anything in particular. Then something changed. It became awkward, unwelcoming, and felt almost hostile at times. At one point the clerk, (who I found out later was the OWNER of the place), was so condescending when I asked a question, I literally stopped shopping there. I've since moved off island, and hadn't given it much thought, until this last weekend when a friend and I decided to check out the quilt show nearby. She convinced me to do a little shopping afterwards and we ran into an old friend who was on her way to Esther's. We agreed to tag along so we could continue to catch up, and I am SO glad I did! It was like an entirely different place! The staff were clearly very busy with customers but they still took a moment to welcome us as we walked in, and I instantly felt a very different vibe than I'd ever felt; warm and energetic! The layout is completely different, too; so bright and open, even with the great new large classroom area. We found lots of new products like fun iron-on patches, (LOTS of patches!!), and an amazing selection of patterns, gorgeous buttons, cool purse hardware and notions. And then there were the FABRICS! I've always been a sucker for quilting cottons, and they have a fantastic selection of pre-cuts and prints. I was very inspired. But what impressed me the most was the well-curated wide selection of apparel and other fabrics! Absolutely scrumptious!! I will definitely be back! OFTEN!! read more

It would be great if I could give two separate ratings for this business. The selection and quality of the fabric carried is lovely. On January 17th at about noon, I wanted to take a look at the Heather Ross and the Alexander Henry fabrics. There is a nice selection and I purchased three of the prints. So for quality I would easily give five stars. But my gosh- the customer service is incredibly poor. The woman who cut my fabric couldn't even give me a smile. She was grumpy and when asked one question gave me such a rude look. Background- I grew up working in my father's fabric shop and then had my own. Customer service is what brings your customers back. I'd rather support an online shop and have all the Heather Ross and Alexander Henry I could ever need than to come back here and get the stink eye from the employee. Who wants to feel they are an inconvenience to the staff?! read more

I am new to the island. I do a lot of sewing and was excited to be able to support a local business. However I was treated so rudely on my first visit, I won't return. Amazon is a better alternative in this case. read more

I spent a week on Bainbridge during the summer of 2020 enjoying shopping and restaurants, and I looked up fabric shops and this was a wonderful surprise. The shops is beautiful, bright and carefully decorated to inspire this of us interested in sewing or design. The staff were also quite helpful, so I went back this week, and once again, they were helpful and had some gorgeous and unique linen and silk fabrics for my projects. I was sad to see a couple of poor reviews, especially since I have had two great experiences. So I decided to tell my story. read more

I feel a little whacko with how much I'm in love with this store and it's staff, but I'm an artist so it's to be expected. The store changes are thoroughly amazing. So bright! It's new owner is beyond fabulous. The spirit of that space is warm and welcoming, I have no hesitation now in asking Questions or seeking opinions on my projects. There's just something about the heart to the store that feels like a space meant for creativity to flourish! I genuinely have a hard time leaving...and in sticking to just a few fabrics or projects! I was so excited to walk into this store and see the fabrics, trims, buttons and other various beautiful goodies, but was quickly turned off by the very unfriendly woman at the counter. It was clear that i was interrupting her project and that she'd rather not have to talk to me. I would've stayed longer and purchased many things since I love to sew and appreciate the type of things this store has to offer, but I only bought one little thing and left. It's too bad because a little bit of friendliness and customer appreciation goes a long way. If my experience in this store was better, I'd give it a better rating. Very disappointing. read more

Esther's is my lifeline to sanity and joy during Covid restrictions. I've found what I needed for masks, quilts and craft projects that fill my days with color, design, and service to others. I'm heading back tomorrow for the iron on fleece and coated cotton that I need for a changing pad for my new baby niece. Esther's stocks so much variety and quality in a relatively small space! The personnel are helpful and know their stock. They wear masks and provide hand sanitizer and clean hard surfaces regularly so I feel safe there. Kudos to all of you at Esther's! read more

My Grandmothers name was Esther and she taught me to sew when I was a kid so when I saw this shop I had to go in. This is the BEST fabric store I have ever seen. Imagine you have 15 minutes until the Ferry arrives and you happen to see rockin' Pac-Man fabric glued to a sign advertising a fabric sale... Welcome to my reality. I dashed in the door and proceeded to scan the aisles filled with cute cloth (both modern and vintage inspired designs). I searched for five minutes before breaking down and asking for help. The fabric lady (maybe it was Esther?!) knew exactly where it was. I even had time to pick out another yard, this time inspired by the teenage employee rocking a cute EGL dress. And that was just 15 minutes... I am pretty sure that I could hang at Esther's for hours draining my paycheck while imagining the world's cutest clothes. read more

Played hookey from work recently and ran away to Bainbridge Island with everyone who works for me. While walking towards the pub I noticed a little fabric store. Since the food and beer was calling, I made note of the location, but did not go in. Many hours later, I stumbled out of the pub dragging two of the women with me down to that little fabric store. In the middle of a self imposed fabric buying ban and on vacation (okay hookey) so I was just popping in and see what was there. It was just a little store on an island. Probably full of quilting supplies. But alas I was so very wrong. Silks, cashmere, the most amazing little buttons. It was tough, but I just admired and pet the luscious material. I was strong. Or at least I meant to be strong. Really I did. I blame it on the price of the green pleated silk chiffon. Less than $10.00 a yard. How could I really pass that up? I had a twenty in my purse. That does not really count as a fabric purchase. It's pocket change really. $96 dollars later I left the store with an amazing silk brocade, perfectly co-ordinate to match the chiffon, incredible little buttons with a bamboo motif for the chiffon (also matching to brocade) thread, and a zipper. I felt overjoyed and oh so very weak and ashamed. I have a problem. A fabric problem. And Esther's Fabric on Bainbridge Island is my new pusher. read more

My favorite Northwest fabric shop....like I've been in SOO many. Love the funky selection of prints. Haven't seen too many fabric shops with mussels, crabs, and cowboys to select from. I bought the mussels and crabs to make scrub tops for a co-worker. Now he tell his patient's he has "crabs" or "muscles (mussels)." read more

The cutest, quaintest little fabric shop on the main drag of Bainbridge Island. The best fabrics ever! I had no sewing project in mind at the time (nor do I currently possess the ability to sew), or I would have stocked up on all of the swoon-worthy fabrics! This store will not honor tax exempt status for out-of-state visitors! I consider this to be very poor customer service since the quilting stores in Port Gamble and Kingston do give tax exemptions as well as every other store that my friend and I visited during her visit.. read more

Esther's is a small hidden gem and Bainbridge is so lucky. There is something for everyone and a skilled, creative, supportive staff. Jen, the owner, has exquisite taste and stocks unique, beautiful fabrics and notions ranging from wools, silks, linens, buttons to embroidery stuff and quilting fabrics. During a visit today I found black wool crepe from Vera Wang and a blue waffle fabric from Maggie London! And anyone with a weakness for pirates is in the right place. (I think Margaret who works there might really be one.) read more

Extremely snobbish sales people. (One of whom is the owner, I believe.) If you're not rich -- or don't APPEAR to be wealthy, forget this place. They're not interested in your business. I've gone in twice, in search of fabric for two projects. The first time, I was the only customer in the store. The "saleswoman/cashier" didn't acknowledge my presence and when I inquired if they carried a certain fabric, she didn't even bother to give me eye contact as she snapped a negative reply. The second visit, I was sized up by a different woman behind the counter who seemed to be unoccupied.. She looked at me as if I were going to infect the store and answered my inquiry rudely. When I mentioned these experiences to my friend in Seattle who is a professional seamstress, she said, "Oh, stay away from there! They're horrible snobs." So it's too bad they can't put forth some effort to interact with members of the public who may not fit into their desired mold. Establishing harmony can be profitable. read more
