I really like it here. When I make gifts for friends and family, I come here because the yarn is so pretty--everyone tells me the yarn is so beautiful. The yarn is pricey, but you get what you pay for! The service is also great. When I was beginning to crochet, they always helped me pick out the right type of yarn for the project I was starting. They balance being helpful and letting you browse on your own; I tend to prefer little-to-no help, but will ask questions when necessary. Wow what a great selection! I was looking for some simple knitting/sewing supplies and had a hard time looking in other stores. I found this place through yelp and saw that I only had minutes to get here before they close for the day. I walked in and the guy was really nice. He helped me with my question and made a choice even though it was minutes before closing. I think the products are reasonably priced. Love the sparkle-y staff here! I came in here to browse. I ended up picking up some needles to properly sew on a Rebel Alliance patch. I was also thinking that I might find the right dangle-y things for a belly dancing sash, but not that day. I did, however, snatch up a couple of skeins of tweed acrylic yarn to finger crochet a couple of beanies for me and my love. Stitches is a small place with enough variety but it's more of a place that I would come to to replenish basics or get the stuff I need to take on a simple project. Last night I had 30 mins to kill between meetings and was already on Capitol Hill with my car. Thinking about where to go and what errands to run, I remembered that I was planning to crochet a scarf before an upcoming ski trip. Having never done it before, and only having seen YouTube videos, I was a little nervous going to a fabric/craft store and not knowing what to buy. I looked Stitches up on Yelp, saw the great reviews, and noticed it was just a few blocks from where I was parked. Within 5 mins I found free parking, (yay for the free 30 min parking at the QFC a block north) and was soon inside browsing dozens of awesome yarn options. I settled on a nice, thick blue wool and as I was looking at other items was politely asked by a cheerful woman if I needed any help. Not needing any, I still always appreciate not being left to my own devices and being ignored. I headed up to the counter a few mins after browsing around and was engaged in a fun, lovely conversation about my upcoming scarf project and both of the employees there were a pleasure to talk to. I immediately felt welcomed into their crafty, creative world. Sure, they don't have the crazy low prices you'll find at JoAnne's. Nor do they have the selection. But they're local and the quality of the yarn I found was better than anywhere else. I can't wait to come back and buy quilting fabrics for other future projects! read more

As a straight guy, I've never been in a sewing store, but I needed two very basic sewing related things so I figured I could run in here and pick them up no problem. No dice. Item 1 was nylon thread. They had a large selection of cotton thread, but no nylon thread - and the girl working there confirmed they don't carry it. Nylon thread is a heavy duty thread frequently used for leather, purses, shoes, etc when you need something stronger and more durable than cotton thread. A sewing store not carrying it seems kind of like a grocery store not carrying vegetables. Then, when I asked her if a fabric they had was Voile, she didn't know what Voile is. I wouldn't blame 99% of the population for not knowing that - I didn't know what it was until two days ago - but she works at a fabric store, shouldn't she know the names of most common types of fabric? I love fabric and they always an interesting selection of cottons. It's mostly nice cotton, some costume-y stuff and basic notions and craft supplies. It's not high end, so don't expect nice wools - there won't be much. It is great to have an fabric store on Capitol Hill. I haven't found the staff to be friendly, helpful, or particularly knowledgeable when I have had questions. Mostly, they ignore you and mostly, that's fine with me. The classes are lame. The teacher is nice, but she doesn't seem to have much real world experience and can't answer a lot of questions. She just proceeds through the steps and doesn't take time (and really doesn't have time) to make sure that your project actually fits you! So the dress I made was unwearable - and now that I have taken a class elsewhere I realize she should have suggested a couple of simple pattern adjustments that would have made it actually fit. read more

Stitches is a small shop that is surprisingly full of all sorts of fabulous fabrics, feathers, glitter, yarn and buttons for your sewing/crafty needs. I've stopped in several times for small items -- a swatch of felt, a spool of thread, a bajillion jewels for fun makeup needs. They have it all and it is all super easy to find. The staff here are great -- friendly but unobtrusive. Not an eyebrow is raised if you pop in here with your Babeland bag from nextdoor, and they will coo over pretty fabric choices with you while you check out. Im happy they are near by -- they make me want to steal my mom's sewing machine and work on more custom clothing pieces. In time, certainly. For now they will keep me appeased with small craft projects and the random patchwork that always needs to be done in life. read more

1. SELECTION They definitely cater to the young market and to those who want to make clothes or young and hip home decor. They don't have a lot in the way of basic cotton prints for quilting, which suits me just fine. Since they get a lot of traffic, they sell out of fabrics relatively quickly, so selection changes regularly. They have some really great Japanese fabric which is double knit cotton gauze so it drapes well and is still machine washable. These prints are also fun and do not repeat across the selvage, making them a great pick for summer dresses or other clothing, where a non-variable print fabric can get a bit plain. They have a variety of notions and interfacing, though I still prefer to get that stuff somewhere else with a bit bigger selection and more big box prices. 2. PRICE While we are on the subject of price... I find that their specialty fabrics like the Japanese prints mentioned above are just a touch cheaper than can be found elsewhere (online), and that their cotton fabrics are a dollar or two more expensive per yard than other fabric stores in the area. I'm comfortable shopping here and buying fabric the same day, because they stock cuter fabrics than can be readily found elsewhere, and their prices are fair. Their beginning (and most intermediate) sewing classes are $50, which seems a bit steep to me, even though I am a beginner. I would rather buy a pattern and check out online tutorials and sleep with my sewing machine manual under my pillow, and spend the $50 on more fabric. But, when I am more comfortable with the basics, I will probably take one of their classes on fixing pants fit issues, or learning how to create your own pattern, both of which seem like they would be better for learning skills and tips that aren't as readily available online. 3. STAFF Staff is friendly and quick to offer advice on projects and fabrics. It seems like they have an intimate knowledge of best uses for various fabrics, and potential pitfalls of improper fabric pairing for a project. They coo in delight over beautiful fabrics, and you can tell that they really love working in their shop and offering tips to other crafters. I noticed a small error on my receipt when checking out, where I was charged for a notion rang up prematurely for another customer. Staff was understanding and quick to fix the error, so I didn't feel embarrassed for bringing it up. Whoo hoo! One small con - I asked if they had a list of items I would need to take one of their classes so I could buy everything I would need in one go, and though they said they did have lists available, they referred me to their website rather than showing me a list that they kept in store. Kind of defeats the purpose of going in to the store, no? Especially because if you have a gift card, you HAVE to sign up for classes in person, rather than online or over the phone. But they were busy that day, so maybe they were just too overwhelmed to pull out the list for me. 4. SIZE As others have mentioned, it's a small shop. Don't let that be a reason to skip over it, though! I brought my yellow lab in once, and though he was welcome, I probably won't bring him again - the aisles are tight, and the shop gets enough visitors that it can be tricky to maneuver while holding several bolts of fabric and a leash. read more

Fun fabrics, i am a birder and was pleased and surprised to see famous bird artist charlie harper's works printed on fabric. Even better, the cottons play well with others. I see pillows, wall hanging, totes in my future. Homie found a cozy flannel hedgehog fabric i will fashion into a cozy robe. The gift giving season will soon be upon us... I asked the owner a fabric measurement question and she was happy to oblige with advice, even happier to be asked for help. They have sewing classes, offer many unique patterns as well as fabrics, and serve crafters as well as seamstresses. Holy Fabrics Batman! This is a small shop in Capital Hill, and I was on the hunt for a handweaving loom, and while they did not have one in stock, that doesn't mean I went away empty handed. While this may appear to be a smaller fabric shop, they are loaded to the brim with absolutely gorgeous textiles! They have almost an entire wall dedicated to notions and accessories, and the rest of the store is bolt after shelf of bolt. They had some gorgeous, whimsical fabrics imported in from Japan while I was there. And I was luck enough to snag a yard or two. (At $22/yard, I couldn't justify much more than that!) I had forgotten my Chinook Book coupon that day, but it's another reason to come back. Friendly staff, while a bit understaffed. I'd give kudos to the short, dark-haired gal with glasses. She at least is consistently helpful. All the others need to up their customer service. I'm so torn about this! I say that because I love the staff here. They are super friendly and helpful. I appreciate a shop that will offer to wind my skein for me apon purchase and where employees are willing to help customers sort out knitting issues, or just chat about fiber crafts. Really. If I were grading them on helpfulness and friendlyness alone they would be getting a solid 5 star review. But I do have to agree with the couple reviews that reflect high prices. They aren't wildly expensive, just consistantly a bit more than I want to pay. Also, it seems like they are trying to fit too many crafts into not enough space. The result is an inadiquite selection for each. I will say though, that the stuff they do have is high quality and absolutly beautiful--so it's hard to go wrong with anything they do carry. read more

It's not the cheapest, and it's definitely not the biggest, but WOW am I glad it's there on capitol hill. They have a good selection of nice fabrics (quite large given their size - including some fun costume materials) and a ton of accessories/trim, so if you're in the middle of a big sewing project (as I often am) it's great to be able to just walk over and get something as opposed to driving to one of the superstores (JoAnn or Pacific Sewing and Fabric). You could certainly make entire garments from just the stock at this great little store; it's just not the most economical way to go. Another great thing about Stitches is the availability of machines/classes right in the store. Though I haven't had the occasion to use them, a number of my friends with small projects who don't have machines of their own have gone over to use theirs for a small fee (and with some great guidance, I'm sure, from the friendly staff). I have always wished I had sewing talent. Unfortunately when I am handed a needle and threat big uneven stitches are the end result. Don't even get me started on sewing machines. In my hands it becomes a weapon of mass destruction. An appreciation for fine fabrics lingers despite my lack of skill which explains why I found myself in Stitches on evening. I was meeting a friend but arrived to our destination earlier than expected and had some time to kill. I saw a book store, Babeland, a clothing store that looked expensive, and then Stitches. Looks like a quaint shop, plus I would need something made in the future, so I walked in. Stitches is a small store but has enough sewing materials for whatever project you need to tackle. The fabrics range from cotton to satin to lace to fabrics with funky prints. There are tons of buttons and patches and add-ons such as a variety of trims, feathers, and what I was looking for fringe. Classes are offered as well. There are very basic sewing classes and more advanced classes such as pattern and dress making. I asked about the woman at the counter, who was very pleasant, about classes and typically they are on Sundays or Saturdays for about two to three hours. As previously mentioned I need to have an outfit made. I asked the woman if she had any recommendations on tailors and she did. She handed me a card and told me this man was excellent and he specializes in burlesque attire. Just what I was looking for! Stitches is a neat place for those who are sewing professionals and those, like me, who can appreciate the work. read more

This was my second time coming here, and it was just as exciting the second time around as the first! I sew, so I was in it for the fabric and notions selection, and it's really one of the best I've seen. It blows my mind how you can go to Joann Fabrics, with its aisles and aisles of bolts of fabric and find a whole bunch of cheap feeling materials and nothing you really love. Then you go to Stitches, which is a small store, but every single bolt of fabric is clearly carefully chosen and pretty seriously awesome. Most of the basic cottons are priced around the $10/yd range, which by my standards is a very reasonable price and pretty competitive with what I would pay somewhere like Joann or online, so all the more reason I will go here every time I'm in Seattle :-) read more

If you are in need of some last minute supplies for your projects, Stitches is a decent choice to go if you are nearby. I'm quite far from being an expert on anything resembling tailoring, sewing, or knitting so I can't comment extensively on their selection. I can only say that the few times I've gone in I struggled to choose- not because of a good selection, but the opposite. They never seem to have exactly what I wanted, but offer substitutes that mostly work. My last trip was to get zippers, of which their selection is good for 18-22", but for anything above it becomes disheartening. I had to choose a colored zipper pull since I didn't want plastic and they only had assorted colors in metal. Sigh. The staff has always been friendly, and usually will try and chat with you if you are open to it. The store is fairly orderly and clean. I'm not a very crafty person, so whenever I TRY to do something crafty I have to ask a bunch of questions and allow myself to feel stupid. The staff at Stitches are not only totally equipped to answer stupid questions, but also patient and gracious about the process. On my most recent visit to Stitches, I was planning a DIY needlepoint project for a grad school class (I know, what grad school am I attending?). I felt overwhelmed by all the awesome choices - fabric, thread, needles, really cute patterns - and I needed help with EVERYTHING. The person on staff seemed a little weary - perhaps from having to answer so many dumb questions and having to pretend that people's projects and lives were interesting all day - but also incredibly helpful. She was intimately familiar with every product and made a variety of informed recommendations. I ended up with a very satisfying project for only $25. read more

I wandered over to Stitches and as I was pawing at all of the gorgeous wool and dreaming about what knitting would be like, I was greeted by a really friendly woman. After spending some time asking me questions about what I wanted to learn to knit we began picking out wool, knitting needles, and a "how-to" booklet, the woman also offered some YouTube knitting pros to help me as well. I left feeling super confident and excited about my new crafting venture. I've since gone back for some tips and more wool. While I'm definitely not a knitting pro I feel confident that anytime I have questions about wool or a knit the employees at Stitches are always willing to help. I recently visited here to buy buttons. They had a great selection and it was reasonably priced. The people working there were extremely friendly and asked me if I needed help finding anything. I felt very welcomed when I walked in. There is a large selection of buttons and notions, so I would definitely come back for those things before going anywhere else since I would rather spend money supporting Stitches than give my money to Joann Fabric and Crap. Overall, the fabric selection was not really my style. I don't use a lot of little animal and cutesy prints and I'm not into the whole burning man aesthetic, but the owners probably know what sells and what doesn't. I would like to have seen more plain linens, high quality shirtings, and fine woolens (OK so I'm boring). I guess Nancy's has that market covered and Stitches is catering to a different demographic. I will definitely come back to Stitches when I am in the mood for something more whimsical and for notions. read more

A stitch in time... This is a fabric store. However, I was in a pinch and ran in here for some bulky yarn for a project. The store salesperson was very helpful with helping find the right yarn for my pattern and the amount needed. Unfortunately, they only had a small selection of yarn and colors, but I picked the last 2 skeins of a royal blue that they had. The tough part -- it was a Peruvian wool which cost $23 each. It was definitely a lot more than I wanted to spend, but purchased it anyway as it good quality. I would def. go back here in a pinch or for fabrics - which they had a lot more of. read more

Stitches is the closest fabric store that's walking distance to my home, although I don't go here to purchase fabric.. I usually buy my crafting ribbons & trim here, as well as random sewing notions. Sure Stitches can be overpriced compared to other locations, but I think they make up for it in the friendly attitude of their employees and the convenience of their location. The staff is always super helpful, and they have a great selection of yarns and trims. My hubby told me that I needed to find a hobby (Apparently working overtime is not considered to be a hobby, though it sure does help pay for things like hobbies). One of the other moms in my son's daycare class inspired me to learn to sew. A quick search led to me Stitches, for their sewing classes. After checking out their schedule I and a friend both signed up to attend. The prices are really reasonable and the class sizes are small (Our beginner sewing class had a max of 4 people in it, which was a great size.). Our instructor was really great, and the small class size meant that we all got help - really important, I think, for true beginners who have never sewn or operated a sewing machine. The store is really cute. They had a lot of really cute fabrics. I'm surprised by the size, somewhat, but honestly I don't think it's reasonable to think that they'd be some big, huge fabric store based on their location. They did have a great selection of items for most craft projects that I am planning on, including a small, diverse selection of fabric types - silk, quilt, clothing - and tons of tools as well as yarn and a lot of really cute ribbon. They also have quite a bit of really yarn (Knitting, anyone?). Price-wise, they're comparable to most other places. I don't know how often they have sales or coupons, so you can purchase most things elsewhere for cheaper, but you won't get personal help at places like Joann where they have 50% off coupons every week. If you need/want help, come here. If you know what you're planning on getting, shop at the big box store for a better price. Parking does kind of suck - you won't find tons of available free street parking (We didn't even bother), but there are several commercial lots around. The Central Seattle Community College parking garage is about a block away, so that's a slightly cheaper option if you need to find parking and don't want to pay the day lot rates. read more

I took a two week beginner sewing class focusing on pajama pants creations here and it was great! I loved that I could come for two sessions and (almost) complete a project. There were only four people in the class and the pacing was appropriate (although another half hour would have been ideal and then I would have finished entirely). I felt I got lots of individual attention and appropriate guidance. It's a great little store with interesting fabric choices, although the prices are a bit expensive so I'll be sticking with cheaper options until I'm a more experienced sewer. :) The best part is that everyone who works there is a sewer, so they can advise you if you go in and you can just work at the back if you'd like (as long as no classes are going on). You can tell the people who work there really know what they're talking about. read more
