Tacos all day every day! I can't really speak for much else but getting a whole bunch of their tacos delivered is always great. One slight knock for me is there a smoked chicken thigh tacos. Had a less than desireable experience here and will never go back. The manager Ashlee Boyne that was working had the nerve to cause problems for me while I was dining over something that happened to me over a decade ago. The disgusting part is I don't even know her personally and this is her PLACE OF WORK. Looking at Google's reviews I noticed she has also been more than rude to multiple customers on top of how I was treated by her. The food could be sub par or not good at all considering I never even got the opportunity to try a bite of my food considering Ashlee made me and my boyfriend so uncomfortable we decided it wasn't even worth it to stay. Owners also address concerns by sassing their customers in responses and act like the people working in their restaurant can't even make a meal wrong. Human error is something we all have in common. Visited Estrella for the first time today. First thing I noticed was the decor and how it seemed disjointed in some areas. Some really elegant choices such as logo and bar mixed in with some odd choices like writing on the walls and a cheap looking plastic marquee sign. There were maybe five other tables of customers inside at the time. The hostess seemed confused as to where to seat us, which was odd seeing as it was wide open with seating options. We got a table shoved in the corner directly next to the door to the outside seating that the waitstaff would constantly pass by. At times the majority of the wait staff looked bored or clueless, leaning or sitting at the bar when there was clearly things to be done...such as cleaning; which brings me to my next point. Our table was filthy. Immediately got sticky arms and had to ask for the table to be wiped, there was dried spilled drink and crusted food as well as crumbs on the table. Upon looking around every table in sight was dirty. The floor looks like it hadn't been swept in at least a week and was in need of a mopping. The silverware was two single mismatched forks (no knife of any sort). Both were covered in waterspots and one literally had dried crusted food on the back of it. We ordered water and it came out in a cute glass bottle. Cute until I saw the random bits of I don't know what floating in it. A brown chunk and various white floaters. If this is how the front of the house looks I don't want to imagine what the kitchen looks like. The menu was the perfect size but again our menus were disgustingly dirty. Covered in sticky and crusty dried on food as well as being wrinkled up. We settled on the classic burger, the fried chicken biscuit hot option, and a single carnitas taco to share. I'll start with the best. The single taco while slightly more expensive than I imagine a single taco being was good overall. The carnitas were a little dry but combined with the jalapeno and the pickled onion had a great mouthfeel with a delicious burst of fresh flavor. I would recommend the taco, but I would suggest getting two. The taco comes with no side of salsa or anything, just a single taco laid out on a tray. The burger came on what looked like a brioche bun, which was probably the best part. The burger looked mangled as if it was torn open to check for doneness. The burger patty itself was slightly over well done and lacked any detectable seasoning. Just bland saltless dried ground beef. I would avoid again. I was excited to try the fried chicken biscuit. I had seen a couple customers come out and it was a large golden colored biscuit. Mine however came out the color of a soft pretzel;very dark. There was a thick unappetizing crust on it and the biscuit itself was very dense, again almost the texture of a philadelphia style pretzel. It dominated the dish to the point I had to treat it like an open faced sandwich and eat only half of it. The country gravy was peppery as it should be but was slightly too thin and had an odd tangy flavor like some sort of citrus was put in it. Really weird choice if that was the case. The fried chicken was stringy and the breading was completely unflavored. It was in desperate need of salt and seasoning. It tasted like uncleaned fryer grease. The sandwich was supposed to have gravy and hotsauce but it was served on the side. Our seasoned fries were yummy, nice and crispy but also tasted like tortilla chips. You can taste the uncleaned grease in everything, tortilla chips dominated the flavor of the food. Also the fries were covered in what looked like beard hairs. I was told and I do believe they were corn silk from deep frying whole cobs of...uncleaned corn? Again, odd choice and worry about the sanitary nature of it. All condiments (ketchup, gravy, hotsauce) came in single use plastic cups. Odd choice seeing as they used paper for their takeout boxes. Overall I would say my experience at Estrella was a bit of a letdown, from the service, to the cleanliness, to the food itself. I would hope we caught them on a bad day but the nature of the dirty front of house made it seem more systemic and common than a one off bad day. This is ashame because they have a beautiful space and an appetizing menu and with a few small changes (motivated staff who didn't look like they were wearing their lazy day clothes, cleaning their tables and floors, seasoning and properly cooking their food) could have something really unique going for them. 2/5 stars for a meh experience overall and if you feel the need to try yourself I would suggest sticking to the taco menu. read more

The little bit of caramelized crisp char on the skin was something I could eat ad infinitum. Pork achiote special taco on corn tortillas so-so. The corn tortillas were not special. Salsas: poblano-meh needs more body, jalapeño-pretty good green and adds freshness not too spicy, habanero- hot!! I loved the fruity flavor, but soooo hot!! Guacamole was very good as well. House margarita, a bit too sweet, but other than that good. Show stealer- the unassuming fanfare free little plate of three small Chocolate Filled Churros!! Perfectly fried and hot, crispy on the outside, and the chocolate had a texture between pudding and mousse with a not too sweet, not too rich unexpected balance. The service was also very good. Our waitress was helpful and friendly. The drinks and food arrived in a timely fashion. She checked in just enough. Bottom line-Wings and Churros will lure me back to try other things, but skip stuff with corn tortillas. read more

Was looking forward to eating here for a little bit. Heard some good things. Started off good. We got seated outside on the nice weather. Then it took a turn for the worse. After being seated we didn't get any service for about 10-15 min. When the someone decided to ask us if our waiter came they asked us if we wanted water. We all said yes. Another 10 min go by our waiter finally shows and and waters come. 25 min finally we get water and attention. Finally we place our orders. The appetizers were delicious. Got the wings and Texas toothpick. That was actually the best part of the whole meal. They were good. Our main meals all came finally. Got the willie burger. Ordered it medium. Came out a little more medium rare. It was an avg burger. The fries were good. They also came with a hair on it. As did someone else in our party had hair on their food. So maybe suggest wearing hairnets!! Couldn't be my hair. I'm completely bald. I don't think I'd be dining here again. Was highly excited all to be let down by poor service and avg food. We were surprised by the very fast seating and service at Estrella! We had a party of 4 at 6pm on a Friday night. Overall, everyone was very impressed by the food, and left very full. The one thing to avoid- the seitan taco. The corn tortilla falls apart, and when it's a juicy taco, you don't mind. This is dry, and totally lacking in flavor. You have to fry or otherwise flavor seitan for it to have any flavor, which this did not. It's great to have a vegetarian option, but it needs some work! Rare I give a 4 star review on a one visit but Estrella was a welcome addition to the Chester county dining scene. Impressed with drinks , the food, the design , and the service. As an admitted bbq snob was surprised to find a pitmasters plate in what I thought was a Tex mex place. Choice of brisket , pork, smoked wings was call (jalapeño sausage was also an option) truly did not expect much as did not see or smell smoke. Brisket was chopped which I consider a sin , but was moist Smokey and full of flavor, same for the chopped pork, chicken wings were ok but not as much of a standout as brisket and pork. Came with white bread, pickles and onion wish i had gotten a side of the coleslaw or the backbeans and after tasting the homemade tortillas from my wife vegetable taco with fried avocado wish I had subbed white bread for tortillas. Daughter and wife both had tacos and were in love with the place from the first bite especially with a roasted tomato poblanos sauce and a avocado jalapeño sauce. Daughter who has worked as a barista raved about La Columbe coffee . Will return as numerous other items and drinks we want to try on the menu.. Again as just a Bbq place probably not 4 stars but overall food, price, value and experience a solid 4 star addition to the area. Also a very interesting brunch menu for Sat and Sunday mornings. We've been to Estrella a handful of times since it opened and it never disappoints! We've sat at the bar and had some drinks and tacos, with our fave tacos being the brisket taco (a must get) and the shrimp tacos (both are fabulous). Recently we have done takeout a few times and in addition to tacos, tried the brisket fries (so so so delicious) and hit the spot on a Friday after a long week. This last time we ordered the family BBQ chicken meal, that came with Mexican corn and potato salad. The flavor of the chicken was so good, potato salad sort of perfect, and the corn with a little lime on it was so tasty. Definitely order takeout if you need a break from cooking during quarantine, and definitely stop by to hang at the bar or sit outside (cool outdoor vibe with fire pit) once all this social distancing is over! This should probably be 4.5, but I can't give just 4 stars, so 5 it is! My wife and I visited this past Friday evening and arrived just after 6pm. There were a couple long community tables open, but the hostess tried to sit us at a small 2-top, right near the stairs and emergency exit, so I asked if we could sit at a long table. No problem. There was already another couple at the other end and the place was not slammed. Our server (Tori) was over within a minute to introduce herself and get us a couple drinks. She was kind enough to let me sample a Levante Hazelnut beer (I get some minor reactions to some tree nuts), and this beer was a hit, so she returned with a full pour in just a couple minutes. Started with a small order of chips and queso ($6). Not inexpensive, but it was a full tray of warm, lightly salted chips and a nice bowl of queso, which had fantastic consistency. For my meal, I went with the Texas Fry ($15) Texas style brisket, house smoked maple sausage, 2 fried eggs, plus refried beans, a side of roasted tomato jam and grilled Texas toast to soak up all of the flavors. It all worked so perfectly and I love that everything was separated and not just one pile of everything. I threw that egg on the toast, added some beans, brisket (amazing, btw), cut up the maple sausage links (huge maple flavor), and some of that unique sweet jam, which was more like a salsa. Loved it. Took the other piece of toast and toppings home for the next day, so the servings definitely justified the price tag. Service was very friendly and prompt and we were out of there in less than an hour. The place filled up nicely as we were heading out. Besides the tables, they had a decent sized bar to belly up to and some creative cocktails from the looks of them. I could see this place being a regular destination, especially in the warmer months with some space outside. Very impressed with my first visit. The 4 hot sauce choices dropped off with the meal is a great touch. That habanero sauce had some heat! Highly recommend. read more

Meh. I really and sincerely wanted to like this place more. Went with the family. Salsa was oddly bland. It was basically just tomato and salt. Zero heat. Chips were ok. Brisket chili, at $11 a bowl, is overpriced. It was unusually bland as well (for chili) but otherwise good. The chili really suffered from a lack of spice. Chicken fried steak sandwich was reportedly good, but served open-face with gravy, so it was fairly soggy when it got to the table. Tacos are good, especially the brisket tacos. The Texas Toothpicks app was clumpy, and not well prepped (might have just been our plate...) Good selection of beer. This is a good place to meet up for drinks. Best new restaurant I've encountered in Downingtown in years. The brisket is transcendent... smoky & tender with nice bark... their red sangria is as good as any I've had and the service was friendly and attentive (even outside). The chips and salsa were also tasty, with more flavor than your average restaurant tortilla chip. Salsa was heavier on the cilantro than I prefer, but that's just a personal preference. I've been 3 times, and each time it seems to get worse. The service is severely lacking. A friend and I went and we were 1 of 4 tables inside; our waitress decided to hangout about 6 feet away from us because we were her "only table right now," It was very uncomfortable. 2 of the 3 times I've been there, the food has been soggy and bland, and the drink orders have been mixed up. I really hope this place can shape up because it does have potential. I would lower all the prices a $1, hire some more experienced wait staff, and work out the situation in the kitchen by adding more spices and herbs. Fried onion straws as an appetizer.. even better than a bloomin onion and served with a nice cream sauce. Got the spicy fried chicken taco and the carnitas taco. Both were amazing and more than enough to fill you up (not bad at $4 a piece). They also bring a sauce caddy to the table that consists of habanero, jalapeño, tomatillo, and poblano sauces.
