    Freaks and SuperFreaks!

Wow. Just wow. I'm stunned. My husband and I moved to the neighborhood in November and it took us until last weekend to actually go. And wow we're we blown away. We opted to shy away from anything that we could get anywhere else and the guy at the register was super helpful. He had great advice and even let us try a few things. Turns out he's the owner of the store. This guy is DEDICATED and his candy is incredible. He was telling us about how he gets up at 3 am to make candy and the whole thing is kind of just his show. And his candy is just awesome and creative and inventive. His attention to detail is impeccable - this shell is just the right amount of crunchy, the triple dipped malt balls are beautifully thick, each color of freaks has its own unique flavor that really comes through and OH MY GOD THE GUMMIES. Best gummies I've ever had. They're literally perfect. Anyway thanks Eugene. Your store is fantastic, your candy is spectacular, and I can't wait to come back.

Freaks! So amazingly good. I even cut one open in the top right just to see the magic underneath

The Most Creative Candies in New York! There's too many good things to say about Eugene and his fantastic store! How many sweet shops can you say actually make their own creations? I stumbled upon this store while on a random visit to Bushwick and it honestly made my day. Most candy stores in NYC - great as they are - typically are resellers. While Eugene J. does have a wide selection of sweets that are from other producers, there's still a lot of care and attention to what is offered and the curation of sugary treats is excellent.  But the stuff he makes? Oh man. "Freaks," which are his supersized take on Nerds, are amazing. Each one has a different flavor and they last really long (if you don't give in to the temptation to just bite into them). And the chocolate covered corn flakes have this great crispy texture like nothing I've had before.  You have to get the chocolate covered cheerios, too - they have this delicate outer candy coating reminiscent of an M&M, but they look like mini dinosaur eggs or some sort of holiday delight. It's hit after hit in his store and I loved everything I picked up during my first time there. My only regret is I didn't buy more.  And as many other reviewers already mentioned, Eugene himself is a real pleasure to be around. He's super friendly and open, gave me lots of fantastic recommendations when I asked for them (but left me alone to make my mind up), and was an excellent conversationalist.  Simply put, Eugene J. Candy Co. is exactly the kind of place that makes New York such a great city to live in. A hidden gem with an owner who is passionate about his craft, whose workmanship and dedication to quality really shows in the product and speaks for itself.

Whimsical, amazing, delicious! A walk back through childhood. This spot has any and all of your candy needs- plus some!

Super cute place and nice owner. Lots of options and some really brings back memories. I thought the Pet Ray Gummy was adorable although my friend wasn't a fan. Eugene, the owner makes his own candy (floral) and it's great. He sells CBD gummies (help with sleep, stress relief, anxiety, etc.) I'd definitely have to come back for some candies on one of my cheat day

"I want the world. I want the whole world. I want to lock it all up in my pocket. It's my bar of chocolate. Give it to me now." -Veruca Salt Chocolate, candy, and sweets can bring the inner Veruca Salt out in many of us! My sweet tooth has been building up more and more over the years. Luckily the only golden ticket needed to get into this small candy kingdom is an MTA pass. Eugene J Candy Co is a great little addition to the NE part of Bushwick. Located in a small shop on Wilson that used to house the great pins and patches crew known as Scumbags and Superstars (now in the LES). Hopefully their great neighborhood mojo has been passed on. I mean nothing goes better with Monster Movie greats like some sweet or sour candy and this place is a perfect stop on your way to a double feature at Syndicated Bar & Theater down the street! Although the store is rather small, it packs a punch, a sour patch punch! You can get not only your classic old school candies and holiday needs like peeps for easter but also many gourmet offerings. With options like Ladybug Truffles, Sea Salt Caramels. Speciality chocolates, featuring classic brands like Double Stuff Oreos and Ritz PB Sandwiches and original takes on mints and peanut butter cups. The proprietor seems knowledgeable, young, creative and very friendly and helpful. Theres something great and innocently childlike about going into a candy shop and picking out a sweet for the day. Eugene J Candy Co is helping to keep that ability alive.

    My candy from Eugene's :)

The owner (Eugene) makes a lot of his own candy, like 'Freaks' (sort of like a supersized Nerd) to chocolate covered Cheerio

I had a wonderful experience taking an iced matcha class at Kettl on Monday! I signed up for the…read moreclass before I got to NY and was able to work it into my busy schedule of being a cool aunt. My brother and I walked around the Greenpoint area and then he had to go pick up his kiddo from camp, so I explored the area then put Kettl into google maps thinking I was coming early for class to avoid the rain. I accidentally went to the wrong location and then it started pouring. The staff told me the other location was 10 minutes away by foot, so I hauled myself to it in pouring rain. Luckily I wore workout clothes and tennis shoes that day, but my raincoat was water resistant, not waterproof, so I got pretty soaked. I still arrived a few minutes early, and the staff let me take some napkins to dry myself off. The class was at the bar in the back of this flagship location. It was set up for two, but I was the only person who showed. Jayanna led me through a very detailed class, provided handouts and a soba tea cookie along with water, and answered a ton of questions I had. As a daily matcha maker, I knew I had a lot to learn. She showed me how to care for the different tools used to make matcha. We made three preparations: sparkling matcha, shaken matcha, and matcha latte. We went through each with various steps and measurements. She demonstrated what to do and then I would make the drinks for both of us. It was a very fun experience and I learned a lot. I also got to shop after the class with a 15% discount, so I got myself a custom single cultivar matcha called okuju made exclusively for Kettl and especially for lattes, and then some individually wrapped fancy tea bags of matcha genmai and hojicha for Eric when he travels. The class had an hour and a half of instruction and I spent a half hour asking about products and shopping. It is a very nice space and I would love to try some of the unique drinks on the menu plus take more classes. If you love matcha and learning, I recommend taking a class here or at the LA location if you are on the west coast!

Kettl is a bit overrated imo. I tried the shirakawa matcha latte, their highest grade for matcha…read morelattes. I thought it was decent, but I feel like it could've been stronger. It also wasn't creamy enough for a latte. The shiso white peach matcha soda was a fun experimental drink, but I feel like for a matcha drink, the matcha flavor was definitely dominated by the shiso and white peach flavors. It was really refreshing though for a hot summer day. Super adorable store! I want to try the matcha tasting one day!
