A few years back I made the mistake of trying another dental office in Newport Beach because I downgraded my insurance. That dental office told me that I had like 6 cavities and that my son had just as many or more. I believed them and that day they "took care" of 2 for each of us. I decided to wait and not go back. Once upon a time, I had the GREATEST DENTIST EVER. He cared for my teeth from childhood though my early 30s. Then he retired. The person who bought his busIness badmouthed hIm and tried to sell me on removing 2 fillings. One tooth was problematic. She ended up destroying my tooth. So I moved to another dentist recommended by a friend. That dentist confirmed the tooth had been compromised, and I needed a root canal. That dentist set a crown. But I kept having pain. He discounted it. I found another dentist. She didn't discount my pain, but BOY , did she like procedures! I began thinking she was trying to change my dental records to conceal my identity! (I'm joking -- kinda.). She commented the xrays showed my jawbone was compromised. I agreed to a deep cleaning. When she continued using the ultrasonic scaler (which drove me batty) and took two itty bitty nicks out of my gum during a deep cleaning -- raising my bill from the agreed to $500 to $2000 -- that was it for me. Did I mention I'd spend 2+ hours with her every time! (I'm usually in and out in 45 min!) I found Dr. Schmidt through a friend. He heard me out. Took xrays. Confirmed he didn't see compromised bone, but the crown would have to go. It's about 16-17 years old at this point. Today was the day. I'm as comfortable as I was with my childhood dentist. The staff is knowledgeable, kind, and soothing. So, if you're looking for a great dentist, give Dr. Schmidt a go! read more

THE OFFICE STAFF (LINDY & RACHAEL) ARE A SCAM!!! FIND A NEW DENTIST! DO NOT VISIT THIS OFFICE!! I have been going to Dr. Schmidt since 2011. He has always been a great dentist, very knowledgeable and friendly. The hygienist, I always scheduled my appointments with was very friendly and made the appointments enjoyable. About 3 months ago, I received a call from one of the office ladies at Dr. Schmidt's office. They said I had an outstanding balance of $769.00. I talked with the lady on the phone, and gave her all the appropriate Blue Cross dental information I had. They also asked if I could help them out and pay the amount I owed, or if I could even afford to pay like $200 for now. I reminded them that everytime my wife and I have visited, we had PPO dental insurance, we both have good teeth, and never received any dental work outside the normal 6 month cleaning and x-rays. I told her I shouldn't have to pay for something my insurance covers. Afterwards, I never heard back from them. A couple weeks later the office staff called my wife stating that she owes $86.00 for x-rays. They said the insurance company is refusing to pay the bill and we are on the hook for this money. This $86 was from my wife's one and only visit to this office. Over the next few weeks, my wife had several phone conversations with Rachael and Lindy, the two lady's in charge of the office here. They kept telling her she owed this money and the insurance won't pay. Every phone call they had, the two office lady's were EXTREMELY rude. All they would say is how Rachael has been working here for 15 years and she is the office manager. They would constantly interrupt us on the phone and ask us to just pay $25 a month. Finally in June 2015 they called my wife and said that she still owes them $86 and I still owe them $769. They also said they have sent us each multiple bills. When actually they sent my wife one bill, and never sent me anything. They also said if we don't pay they will send us to collections. So I finally gave in and called Lindy myself. She was very rude on the phone and stated how the money I owed was from two cleanings in 2012 and two in 2013 and my wife's cleaning in April 2014. Lindy told me that all the claims were filed on the date the service was performed. She also said that this office was out-of-network, when actually it was in my network, because I verified it before I went. When I asked why they kept letting me come back for more cleanings when I owed them that much money, they had no answer. I called the insurance company, and within 10 mins the Blue Shield customer service rep had answered all my questions.....Dental offices only have 1 year to submit a claim otherwise it is the Providers (Dental Offices) responsibility to pay. According to Blue Shield, all 4 of my claims and my wife's claim were not submitted until June 2015. They said I did owe $103, for one fluoride treatment at each visit. Which was also a SCAM, because every cleaning I received, they did the fluoride treatment and NEVER claimed I owed them extra for it!!!! So to sum things up, the office lady's never submitted our claims, so they never got payed. They tried lying to us and threatened to get us to pay $855.00 for their mistakes. I called them back and said out of good faith I'll pay the $103, even though I shouldn't have to since they scammed me into it. THIS PLACE IS A JOKE.....DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTAL OFFICE!! AT LEAST NOT WHILE RACHAEL & LINDY ARE EMPLOYED!! read more

The staff here has the worst customer service that I have ever experienced from a dental office! I don't understand why they would hire an office manager (Rachel) that has no manners and clearly doesn't understand the meaning of customer service. I called to ask about my treatment plan because they tried to charge me a deductible twice in 1 year. She was very rude and couldn't even offer to contact the insurance company to verify my coverage. Instead, she snapped at me with a snotty voice and tried to lecture me on office policy and insurance billing and told me to call the insurance company myself. I told her that it's her job! What else do they do there? I don't care who you are but you need to treat your customers with respect. I can easily find another dentist with great staff. I do not recommend anyone to go to this office. It's already bad enough that the office is old, far, and hidden in the back of a crappy shopping plaza and the staff here is horrible. It's not just Rachel, the whole staff has an attitude problem. It makes sense since they're being lead by such a great leader. Way to go officer manager! Simply the Best I've had bad teeth for about 40 years. I have dealt with a lot of mediocre dentists who care little about your comfort level in the chair. Dr. Schmidt is very different. Very no nonsense, very positive and not judgmental. He and his staff are incredible. If you are afraid of needles, don't worry, you feel almost nothing in his care. A true professional. I would highly recommend Dr. Eugene Schmidt. Great demeanor, professionalism, knowledge of what he is doing and empathy. I took my elderly mom there who had a bridge that had fallen and she had difficulty eating. THE place to go if you're scared of dentists. Dr. Schmidt is funny and relaxes you immediately. He makes a real effort so you don't feel pain. I hadn't gone in years and was hyperventilating before I went. Dr Schmidt's whole team was great. Told them I was nervous and they were great. Now, I'm never afraid to go. I trust him to the point that I eventually got braces (his recommended orthodontist was fabulous too) and today I've got a great smile. He has several chairs. They can take X-rays right in the chair, and you can see them yourself on a big screen. The office is a bit hidden in interior corner of the shopping center, so you won't notice it from the parking lot. My embarrassing moment... Going to the fish and chip place a few spots away to buy British candy afterwards. I don't eat it right away! read more

I have major anxiety when it comes to dentists and put off getting cavities taken care of for about 5 years (I know, it's horrible). I went to two dentists in LA, where I live, over that period and both of them told me I needed at least two root canals and four crowns. Having been told how much major dental work I needed didn't exactly calm my nerves and have me rushing to get it done. I finally built up the guts to get things taken care of and went to Dr. Schmidt's office for xrays and an exam, per my dad's recommendation. When I made my appointment I told the staff about my fear of dentists and when I came in they were all extremely nice and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Dr. Schmidt was especially kind and tried to work around my anxiety issues even though it was just a simple exam. At the end of the quick exam he told me that I had 4 cavities, as I expected, but that NONE of them required root canals or crowns!! The dentists I had been to in LA were just going to do unnecessary dental work and rip me off. I went back yesterday to have the dental work done. i thought I would be there for 3 hours but it only took an hour and a half. Again, Dr. Schmidt and the hygienist were so kind, accommodating, and patient. They made me feel extremely comfortable. I, and my family, have been a patient of Dr. Schmidt for over 20 years. None of us have ever had a bad experience with him, or with anyone on his staff. As a dentist, his work is excellent and top notch. I've had everything done from routine cleanings (by his staff of hygienists) to crowns to tooth extractions. All were done superbly and with minimal discomfort. When an old repair job (done before I started going to him) to one of my front teeth finally finally needed replacing, he was able to cap the tooth in such a way that it removed a slight 'buck tooth' look I had, so his ability to do cosmetic work is also great. He is kind and caring and always takes the time to inquire about what's going on in my life and with my family. His office staff is great too. Everyone is always cheerful and willing to help. It's a busy office but I've never felt rushed when inquiring about an appointment or a billing question. Everyone is just great. read more

Dr Schmidt is a unique Doctor. He's definitely rare, old school. Manners maketh man, you could say. Same care, same employees that work hard & tell you want may not want to hear to keep you out of chair & under the knife, that's the last resort. He does not search your Insurance to find things he could do just because your insurance provides a yearly stipend. If you need serious help he's definitely one to trust, gives you options & gives you his recommendation & reasons why & of course cost!
