Dr. Shimizu has the nicest staff. I have been going here for a while since moving to Socal and have had regular cleaning and wisdom tooth extraction procedure done. While Dr. Shimizu is highly skilled and professional, the anesthesia procedure was done beautifully and I didn't feel a thing during the injection. The hygienist who does the cleaning is also highly skilled and good at it. She was very thorough and tough on stains and tartars to ensure that we get the best out of regular cleanings. My family has been coming here for probably 20 years and this gives me the authority to say he and his staff are awesome. Maybe they are all so awesome because of our bad teeth, but it looks like others feel the same. I had a terrible dentist in my childhood and the memory of severe dental pain still sends me into panic as soon as I hear a drill. He has always been careful and patient, explained procedures and my options and their consequences, not in an upselling kind of way. I got on a specific dental plan so I could go see a dentist in the Harbor my daughter recommended, however, the wait time for an appointment was 6 months! I chose Dr. Shimizu because my sister always spoke highly of him and had work done there and was very pleased. Elaine booked my appointment right away and I have started my treatment plan. Always right on time, a staff of friendly, efficient professionals and his dental work is always excellent to include crowns, etc. I have referred 2 persons to him and both were extremely pleased with their results. One, who has a phobia where dental procedures are concerned, said he had never gone to a dentist where he felt no pain during or after his procedure. Well folks, broke a tooth on a lifesaver. I KNOW , ironic isn't it. Anyway, broke the tooth while out last night. Did not hurt but it was broke. My regular dentist who I had been going to for over 20 years had retired. Well the office next door to his old office is where they referred me to. So I looked them up. Only had one day I could get in this week, so had to fix it fast. They were pretty busy but managed to fit me in this afternoon. Little nervous. Did not want to start with a new dentist but ok. Receptionist was so sweet on the phone & went I got there nothing changed. She had messaged me the paper work earlier so it was already in the system. Sat down & with in two minutes was called back. Assistant took an X-ray. Yep broke the molar. This is when I met the dentist. Dr. Shimizu was so nice & understanding. He told me my options & let me think about it a moment. Well I decided to bite the bullet ( no pun intended) and take care of it . In & out within one hour. No pain, no swelling and no broken tooth anymore. The dental hygentist did a deep tissue cleaning which I did not feel a thing, was great. Vanessa, the hygentist, was very concerned for my pain which I had none. It was in two separate sessions. The office is very low keyed and caring. You could not ask for a more neat bunch of people. I highly recommend this dentist. He is on the cusp of what is going on in the dental field. His staff is friendly, knowledgeable and down to earth. When I got dental treatment in Irvine, it was a huge mistake as they charge more and whack you for more fees. Dr. Shimizu is a VERY VERY good dentist. Not only that, but his entire staff was amazing! I had a broken wisdom tooth that needed to be extracted. If you have ever had a broken tooth you know how much pain that can cause. I had that PLUS and infection. I called first thing on a Tuesday. They were booked but slid me in for a consult @ 9am. Consult was very thorough with digital and panoramic xrays. We determined extraction was required, but like I said... They were booked. He wrote an RX for anti biotic and I was on my way back to the front counter. After considering taking a referral to another dentist I asked when they could fit me in. Just so happened they made the arrangement to get me in the NEXT DAY! Thursday 10am. By 10:02 am on Thursday I was in the chair, bibbed up laying back waiting for doctor. The dental assistant there ROCKS also! By 10:30 I'm biting on gauze waiting to be released. No pain. No fuss. Dr didn't mind me wearing 1 headphone. This was an awesome experience. Not sure where the great reviews are coming from to be honest. My parents had me see this dentist a long time ago and I had mentioned my sensitive teeth which was pretty much ignored completely as they finished up my cleaning and asked nothing about them. I refused to ever go back and I moved back to Huntington Beach recently and since my father rants and raves about how amazing Dr Shimizu is, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt to see if he would listen to me and handle a tooth that is ground down a tiny bit from a piercing I used to have there and the tooth has now been causing me terrible pain. I very carefully explained to him that the TOP of the tooth was slightly damaged and explained all about the lip piercing when I was younger and what it had done and WHERE the pain was coming from, WHAT caused it etc. He wanted to do flouride trays but been there done that and have still been in pain so we discussed drilling the tooth and a filling, I said ok. When I got home and the numbing wore off I took a closer look at the tooth and realized I didn't see ANYTHING there and that even through the numbing, I was still in a lot of pain. I called the dental office immediately and Dr Shimizu then proceeded to argue with me that he had told me the EXACT spot the filling was going to be placed (He put one on my GUMLINE, where NOTHING was wrong). He did NOT tell me that but simply wanted to cover himself since he made an obvious mistake and did NOT listen to what I had to say about my problem. Nothing about this office had changed in 12 years and he was quite rude about it. Not only that, but the pain has been SO bad after having such a sensitive tooth drilled on and given an UNNECESSARY filling that I am now going to get a root canal after an Endodonist (root canal specialist) told me I'd need one. Will NEVER return to Dr Shimizu and may possibly be filing a complaint with the Dental Board of California as I don't appreciate that he not only took up my dental benefits with this procedure I didn't need, but it was painful and am now paying out of pocket for a root canal. read more
