I needed to arrange a Funeral Luncheon. Someone told me about the Mayor's Mansion on South Harlem Ave. so I decided to give it a try. Glad I did. It was an incredibly good experience. I called to make a reservation and spoke to the owner, John. Gave him the details, time, date, menu, number attending. At the end of the conversation I expected that he would ask for a deposit or have me sign a contract. Nope. John said that he trusted me. Also said that he has been in business for 29 years and no one has ever cheated him. John said that he lives by the Golden Rule, "Do unto others...". He does, and so do his employees. The first time I pulled into the parking lot and got out of my car, there was an employee unloading a truck. He stopped what he was doing to greet me and say hello. When John and I walked into the banquet hall I could see that it was immaculate. The tables had bright white table cloths and the chairs were all neatly arranged around the tables. The room was nicely decorated with plenty of lights. It was a great first impression. The day of the luncheon came and we all arrived and sat at the tables. The food was served and it was delicious. I'll comment on three items. Mashed potatoes like I haven't had before. The taste and texture were something really special. It's difficult to describe but there was a smoothness and flavor to the potatoes. We had the Polish menu. The Polish sausage was tasty and not greasy. I ate a couple of links. Finally the kolaczkis. Being married to a Polish woman I've eaten a lot of them in my life, but none like this. After we went home following the luncheon I decided to call John to see if I could buy more. He said that I could. They were making a big batch for a luncheon the following day and said he would make extra for me. I ordered two dozen and picked them up the next day. I can't complete this review without mentioning our waitress, Gayle. A really special person. You have to picture about 25 people at 4 tables all being served at the same time. And all having the expectation that things will happen in a timely manner. Gayle did a great job of not only serving the food, but also bringing extra of whatever they ran out of. And it was done quickly. There were times that the service was so good that it felt like we had 2 or 3 waitresses. But we only had one. Amazing person. I spoke to her after the luncheon and she said that she enjoys her work. It shows. So I highly recommend the Mayor's Mansion for your next banquet or luncheon. The food, the service was average. The appearance of the hall was neat and clean. The owner Joseph however was disrespectful to the ladies at our table, and the comment to my wife was completely unacceptable. Joseph asked how everything was, so we informed him that the women's bathroom was very cold and no hot water, all he can offer were jokes and insults. To make the matter worse, minutes after that conversation our area by our table got so cold that three of our guests at our table had to get up and put their coats on. A little empathy, reason, excuse, or how about an apology is all we were expecting from a decent gentleman owner. I hope this review will at least prompt other guests to make sure this does not happen to them. read more

My now-wife and I got engaged in late 2019 and started planning our large 130+ guest wedding shortly thereafter. We looked at a few venues in Chicago, and got the best vibe from the owner John, and the venue itself. His prices were also more competitive that other venues of equivalent quality. We loved that we had the optionality to host our ceremony in one of the upstairs halls, and then take our guests down into the beautiful cellar for our reception. John was super communicative and flexible and easy to work with right from the start, and his team's motto is to take as much stress away from the bride and groom during the wedding planning process. We initially planned to have our wedding in June 2020, but then delayed to late August due to COVID, and eventually July 2021, and for each delay, John did not charge us any extra fees and was accommodating to the sitatuation. Heading into 2021, the prices at the venue increased for the various offerings, typical of most companies coming out of the pandemic, but John honored our originally agreed upon prices in our contract we signed back in 2019, and we were very grateful for that! As the wedding approached, John was available via phone and email at a moment's notice, and he allowed us to host our ceremony rehearsal the night before at no extra charge too. The venue also accommodated us with special requests, like having easels available to hold up portraits we wanted to display, and having a projector to use during the best man speech. The bartenders, Joe and Phyllis, a married couple of 55 years, were absolutely wonderful and our guests loved them. The wait staff were also courteous and efficient throughout the night. My wife and I were so stressed that we could barely eat any of the dinner we picked out during our wedding night, but fortunately, the wait staff gave the extra food from the kitchen to my parents at the end of the night, and we were able to enjoy that food over the next week, and it was absolutely delicious all the way around! There were also vegetarian entree options that were individually served to each of our guests who requested that. We had so much fun we extended an extra hour on top of what we booked for the day. Loved this place the first time I stepped into the banquet. But my fiancé and I had to check out other places first before we made our final decision. After looking at our facilities, we decided to choose European Chalet Banquets for our wedding reception. My fiancé said this place is perfect for us!! Our wedding was last Saturday, 04/25/2015...our guests were from Chicagoland, Indiana, out of state & out of the country. And the location of European Chalet was perfect for all of our guests, by the highway and on a main street, clearly visible right when you get off the highway. The decor inside the facility: European and classy yet very comfortable, their main banquet upstairs and their super cool wine cellar as well. Food choices were abundant. Our food tasting was no joke, John, the owner, told us not to eat prior to the tasting and he definitely was not saying that lightly. The day of our wedding reception, everything was PERFECT!! We had given John our place cards, greeting card box holder, champagne flutes, cake knife & server, our guest signing tree and our dvd with our slideshow on it several days before our event. He took care of everything!!! We came upstairs after our cocktail hour in the wine cellar and everything was in place just like we requested. Unfortunately, Our limo broke down in their parking lot and John had to take care of all of that. I had no idea the limo even broke down until John told a couple days later. He made sure our wedding reception was seamless and it definitely was!! Overall, European Chalet Banquets was the best place for us. Impeccable customer servce from John and his staff from the moment we first walked in there to tour the venue til the moment we hugged him and thanked him at the end of our reception. Their family has owned European Chalet for years and I understand why they are still around: 1) family owned and loved 2) dependable in every sense 3) affordable - fresh rose centerpieces, wedding cake, chair covers & sashes included in our package - could not find that anywhere else! 4) professional & friendly - John & his staff 5) AMAZING FOOD - all of our guests could not stop talking about the appetizers and the choices we made for our family style dinner 6) clean - banquet rooms, washrooms, parking lot: very well kept 7) classic decor - love the ornate ceilings and all the hard wood flooring European Chalet is amazing!!! This is a wonderful banquet hall for any milestone in your life. Both the atmosphere and service are highly exceptional. I had my baby shower here last week. My mother-in-law and I worked closely with John (owner) to make sure everything was perfect. John is very patient and attentive and will respond either by phone or email. He is a smart businessman and explained that the per-person cost is all inclusive because he pays his workers more than minimum wage to offer his customers quality service. The decor in the Warsaw room is beautiful. There are paintings of European landmarks including the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was a hot day in the mid 90s, but the room was nice and cool. Another thing that makes this place great: they use large round tables meant for 12 people, but seat 10, so there is plenty of room for everyone. The room itself is very spacious and we didn't feel crowded. If nothing else satisfies you, the food will. I swear if the service and decor were crappy, I would still give this place 4 stars just based on the quality of the food. You are getting authentic European food from "little old Polish ladies" in the kitchen. The chicken noodle soup tasted like it came from my grandma's stove top, and the chicken vesuvio was to die for! I highly recommend this hall if you are looking for your wedding or shower. read more

The European Chalet is absolutely wonderful! My husband and I recently had our wedding here. John was great! He was so accommodating, answered all our questions, and would promptly respond to emails. He even allowed my mother in there early to set up a candy table. The day went off without a hitch! The room was set up beautifully! It took my breath away. Actually I'd give 4.5 stars if that was possible, knocking off a half star for the food, which was good and fresh but I wouldn't say it was amazing. But overall, the place is great and my husband and I were completely satisfied and happy to have held our wedding reception at European Chalet Banquets a couple months ago. The venue was just what we were looking for - spacious, affordable, with great customer service, and decent food served family style! As everyone else has said, John, his family, and staff go above and beyond for their clients. John let us come back at least three times, maybe more, during the four months leading up to the wedding to try more food before deciding on our menu and to check out the space as we were trying to figure out how we wanted to decorate. On the day of the event, John let my mom come in much earlier in the day to decorate the hall before heading to the chapel where we had our wedding ceremony. Then during the reception at the banquet hall, everything went incredibly smoothly and the service was superb. John was also really great at responding to emails during the time leading up to the wedding and it was just a really positive experience working with him and his staff. Very pleasantly surprised with this banquet hall. We booked it for our post-wedding luncheon on June 30th. The owner greeted us at the door, was very accommodating and nice. He did not rush us whatsoever and made sure all of our needs were met. The food was exceptional as well. I did not love the coleslaw but it was a matter of preference rather than quality. We held our Company Holiday Party at the Mayor's Mansion and it was absolutely fabulous! The hall was decorated for Christmas with garland and trees, the fireplace was on, and the holiday centerpieces on the tables were a nice touch. The food was delicious - everyone loved the homemade cooking, especially the breaded pork cutlets and sauerkraut. The wait staff were attentive and no one waited or wanted for anything. If we asked for more food, it was out in seconds. The bartenders were fast and friendly as well. WOW! We pick the perfect place for our Mom's 80th Birthday party. From the time we booked the party right up to the end of the party John was amazing. I would highly recommend European Chalet for your next party. We went to a Baby shower on Sunday. The room was beautiful and large. The theme of the room was wine so there were pretty murals on the walls and the pictures turned out really nice. There were over 60 people at the shower and there was alot of room for the kids to run around and play. The food was excellent. It was family style and even as a vegetarian, there was plenty of food to eat. I especially enjoyed the cream of mushroom soup, red potatoes and the broccoli & cauliflower salad. If Icould give 6 stars, I would. We had our wedding here back in October. My husband and I are very low key and wanted a simple affair; what we got was a simply perfect and elegant affair! We picked European Chalet for a few reasons. First, John actually takes care of and spends money on the upkeep of his facilities; many banquet halls in the area are so outdated, but European Chalet has beautiful wood floors, ambient lighting and a well kept up interior. Second, we had attended a small family event here earlier in the year and I could not stop thinking about the food we had and how good it would be again (coming from a Polish family, I knew I had to feed everybody well to have a great wedding). Third, John was willing to work with us and our budget to have the simple luncheon that we wanted without pushing us into the formal wedding package that seemed required at many other locations. Lastly, the location was convenient and easy to find for out of town guests. Thanks to European Chalet, we had a gorgeous day and the food was a hit... they even let my family take home some of the leftovers because they were raving about it so much. Outside of the menu, we were not very big into micro-managing all the details and left some items up to them. In every little detail under their control, they went above and beyond; the centerpieces were gorgeous along with the flowers on the gift table and they set up our tier of cupcakes perfectly. I had a wedding reception at European Chalet on January 3rd, 2015. I can't express how grateful I am to have found this venue. Choosing your venue can come with a lot of anxiety, but when we met with John to discuss possibly booking there, My parents, my husband, and I felt immediately at ease. You can tell John enjoys what he does, and he speaks with so much enthusiasm about the European Chalet. After booking, we went to one of the food tasting events. We had such a fun time and got to try all the amazing food. We met the servers and the bartenders, and we got a sneak peak at the great service that was to come for the reception. We choose the package where everything is included, so everything was basically done for us. The most stressful part was picking the food, only because there were so many dishes we enjoyed. The reception went so smooth, and our guests were very impressed, and I have nothing but great memories of my wedding. The tables were beautiful. The food was so plentiful and delicious. The sweet table got many complements. For the late night food, we chose the Roasted Pig. It probably sounds crazy to some people, but it was such a hit among the crowd. I had my first son's Christening here and I was very pleased with everything. The service was impeccable. John was very courteous and helpful and made the whole process very easy. The day of the event, his sister was there and she was just as nice. She was on top of everything and made sure everything was taken care of. The food was excellent. All of my guests were amazed with the food. It is not the typical food they serve at all the banquet halls. Their food is really good and there is a lot to choose from. And lastly, the price. Don't know where to start. Booking surprise party with the owner John was seemless. He even put the fake event on the Marquee to fool the honoree...his idea. His sister Theresa was very gracious and helpful while we decorated. The bartender was phenomenal! The head waitress and about 3 or 4 other wait staff were great! His brother who collected my final payment was patient while my debit card was rejected. With all those delicious drinks...I thought I gave him a credit card. Everyone raved over the food! We had our wedding reception on 10/6/2018. From the beginning John was so wonderful and thorough with packages, pricing, and the amazing things that the Mayor's Mansion had to offer for our special day. We fell in love with the wine cellar, and we were right! John responded in a very timely manner to our phone calls and emails, was always willing to meet with us (in the evening due to our work schedules), and always had an answer. John also worked with us to customize our package. John definitely helped make this day less stressful, and we can't express how thankful we are for it! He greeted us outside and helped us out of the limo, and walked us into the hall. The banquet hall looked beautiful all dressed up in our wedding colors! The food was delicious, and the service was amazing! The bartender and the young ladies who helped serve and run dinner were always attentive, communicated with us, and were always checking in with us. We highly recommend European Chalet Banquets. We had our wedding there 2 months ago and people are still talking about how great it was - especially the food, which was terrific. John and his sister, Irene, walked us through the entire process from cake choice to table arrangement. More people showed up than we expected and they were able to put together another table for us. We got a great deal by having it off-season and on a Friday night. John also organized a food tasting a few weeks before the wedding so we were able to come in and sample everything they offer so we could make our decisions. It's located right off of I-55, and not far from Midway, which was convenient for out-of-town guests. John and Irene took all the stress out of our perfect day! read more

We have attended weddings here as well as had Christening, First Communion and Confirmation parties. We just had a combination Communion and Confirmation party for our daughters a week ago. The location is ideal because we had guests from different parts of Chicago, the suburbs and Indiana. With being right off I-55, it makes it any easy destination. The ambiance is very pleasing. The staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. It was a rainy day and we had seniors who needed assistance. They have an outside elevator that helps guests who have difficulty navigating stairs to enter the building. The staff was on the look out and ready to help anyone needing help. The bar staff also would go out into the crowd and ask if anyone needed drinks, which was very nice, especially for the older guests. The food is amazing. The guests bragged about how wonderful and fresh the food was.The chicken rakoci is one of my favorites and many guests said the chicken was so tender that you didn't need a knife to cut it. The stuffed cabbage rolls are stellar and the housemade dumplings melt in your mouth. The lemon garlic broccoli was cooked just right with a bright green color. John the owner is very easy to work with and very helpful in helping with the menu selections, as well as tips to make the party go off smoothly. I don't even know where to start! Made a phone call and spoke with John on Monday to meet with him on the upcoming Saturday to discuss booking my wedding in October. I gave John the number of people and the room (Wine Cellar) that I was particularly interested in. He stated we can go over everything when we meet on Saturday. My fianced and I arrived on time at 9:00 am on Saturday. We were kept waiting for John for about 15 minutes in one of the banquet rooms. The floors were very sticky and tacky, but there was construction going on so we overlooked that for the time being. and When John finally arrived, we were greeted with the "bum's rush" with John telling us that he had a funeral luncheon later in the day, and wants to know our details quickly as he wants to keep things moving along! Really?? Already I am getting pissed as I felt like I was greeted by some smarmy salesman. He turns to go to an office and asks for the date (I already gave him this info earlier in the week),.So I give him the date and he said he was booked! Ok then,..I proceeded to tell him so he could clearly hear me.....THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME WHEN I CALLED!! Totally wasted our time! What a complete jerk and unprofessional moron! Glad I found this out now, then later. So much for wanting to give my business to an establishment in the neighborhood. Wow,..I am just blown away by the lack of professionalism this guy had. Now, I don't believe the great reviews I read about this place at all!! This type of person does not deserve to have anyone's special day at this facility. He obviously couldn't care less.
