The photos are unprofessional and overpriced. TRUST ME! If you want photos with UBC regalia (Grad gowns), you will have the opportunity to get professional photos at your graduation ceremony! UBC has its own PROFESSIONAL photographers who will take a few photos of you on stage during the ceremony. They will email you later and you can purchase them for MUCH LESS than Evangelos, with better quality and a more professional look! If you're not sure, check with your department! I WISH I had known this before falling into Evangelos' trap and spending $500 on photos that I now hate looking at! I only show people the ones I took with my cell phone at the ceremony--not the awful ones from Evangelos! SUPER overpriced (1 digital photo for $45, which doesn't even include a printed version!), low-quality photos with zero retouching or refinement! The photographers do not seem to be professional; they just tell you to try a few poses, and you'd definitely get better photos with your own cell phone, because they will not spend any time on retouching your photos after they take them. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!! I was so disappointed after waiting so long to get my photos, only to find that even my 8-year-old nephew could have done a better job!!! I was forced by UBC to come here for my grad photo. They took a $45 cash deposit, and their shady policy requires you to go in person to reclaim your deposit within 60 days. Even if you are a few days past the deadline, they will NOT return it--even if you've already purchased their overpriced packages! This actually happened to me. Evangelos put me through months of begging to get my deposit back, even after I had paid $500 for a photo package! I was 6 days late in asking for my deposit back because I assumed they would deduct it from the package price, but they didn't. I paid online and had to go to their store several times to explain the situation. Each time, they told me their main manager wasn't there and promised to follow up via email to see if they can return my deposit--but they NEVER did. After a few in-person visits and emailing them, I called the store to follow up. A woman with an accent answered the phone and was extremely rude. She told me that because I was 6 days late for asking my deposit back, it was their policy not to return deposits, and there's nothing she can do. I explained that I just made a mistake and I was only 6 days late, had already paid them $500, and that I'm just a student in a tough financial situation. She was SO rude and patronizing, saying, "Doesn't matter; everybody here is a student, ma'am." I said this was terrible customer service and told her I would share my experience with other students. She replied, "Doesn't matter; go tell whoever you want!" I couldn't believe how rude she was. Then I went to the store the day after, and confronted them in the store in front of another customer, explaining how tired I was of all the back-and-forth, the poor service, and the stress. The staff member at the counter said she would "try her best." A day later, I finally got my deposit back, but only after months of stress, being patronized by their staff, and wasting $500 on photos I'll never show anyone! read more

I was really disappointing with my UBC grad photos. I was initially excited thinking back on how well my high school grad photos turned out (different company). The backgrounds are boring and all the poses are the same (except for 2 two fun poses which where really rushed through). My boyfriend of 4 years waited an hour for my photos and the poses they put us in were so boring. I just expected more direction. I am not a model and I don't take photos of myself for fun, so I just smiled as big as I could for every photo... all 30 of them look the same... urg. so frustrated. Quoting from what the owner just told me, they did make one for "us", just we "didn't purchase" it. There are supposedly high resolution and low resolution options for purchasing. I payed $450+ for the USB with the "high resolution/pixels ones". One month after I paid for it, I finally got the email saying it's done after I called them and expedited their ass a week ago. The owner showed me my pictures. Each of them is less than 5mb........ my cellphone takes 10mb+ pictures...... what are their "professional camera"'s for.......... SCAM SCAM SCAM. I wonder how low resolution a "low resolution plan" can be. And no matter who came in, they assume your sex, your sexual orientation, your gender identity of expression and arbitrarily stuff you with the props they think match the sex, gender and sexual orientation they assign you to. It only took me 45mins of struggling to successfully make the assistants to realize I hate what they were making me doing and then I started having my own thing with my own handbag which turned into a temporary prop last minute. Somehow manages to turn what should be a celebratory moment for which I'm willing to pay top dollar into a miserable, aggravating experience. Mediocre quality photos at exorbitant prices, coupled with a rude and vindictive approach to service and product packaging. There isn't a choice even close to what I want to buy, they refuse to consider any changes, so I'm forced to over-pay for what I don't want. I expect to pay a premium for professional photography. I've run a photo business before. I've bought all kinds of graduation photos over the years. There's really no excuse for this. The only explanation I can see for their still being in business is the captive business channel they have via UBC's recommendation. This place survives solely because it coorperates with UBC to take Grad photos. Their price is ridiculously high with 50 bucks per passport size photo with minimum order of 285 dollars. The photographers are amateur who took photos of you closing eyes, posing bad expressions and still considered it to be okay and tried to sell it to you. Ridiculous. First of all- I am very surprised that there are no other reviews for this place considering they deal with all the grad photos for UBC and also offer them to SFU and other schools nearby. I went in with a positive attitude with the thought of freedom being so close, but my feelings quickly changed. Let me explain.... If you want to book an appointment for a morning you can't do it over the phone, only afternoon appointments can be made over the phone. If you want to book a morning appointment you must do it online. This is just plain stupid. I dont know about you, but if I am going somehwere to pay for a service I would like to be able to book my appointment easily. If you do book over the phone, you are left with talking to one of the owners who is extremely rude and impatient. I would recommend booking online so you can avoid this situation. Not to worry though, she will be waiting for you when you go in for your appointment and when you order your photos. During the appointment, you feel extremely rushed as the photographer hurries you along to put your bag down and get the gown on. Then the photos start. To be fair, the photographers are nice but they are SO rushed. The lighting is very poor and the backgrounds are quickly changing behind you. The props and backgrounds are super tacky (fake flowers, a globe, and a background that looks like you are in Greece). You are also able to take group shots with friends or family. Don't be fooled, if you end up liking your photos you have to buy a package of them. You can't buy just one! This also goes for your own grad photos, only packages can be ordered and if you want more than one pose you pay EXTRA. Make sure you don't have any questions when you go in because you will get the response. "Did you look online"? I hope there are other options for students to use because this place is terrible. Pretty scammy business, they require you to pay large amounts of money for digital copies of your own grad photos from a session that is already paid for by the University. Their pricing isn't very customer-friendly either, since you can either buy groups of 5 or 10 digital photos for an exorbitant price, or none at all. Evangelos, please be better. What a racket. These guys do grad photos for UBC and charge about 100x what their product is worth. The photos were fine as far as grad photos go. But then I went to order a couple grad shots for my grandmothers. They wanted $400 for a CD with 8 different shots. Ummm nope. All the other prices were ridiculous as well. I ended up getting two 5x7s for $30, then they wanted another $30 to mail them within Vancouver. Last time i checked, mailing a package with 2 photos costs about $1. I haven't seen such exorbitant pricing in a long time But to end this on a more positive note, and to give credit where credit is due, the photographer was quite personable and did a good job making me feel comfortable. read more

I have only written reviews in Tripsadvisor before and haven't done it here but will write reviews of this studio in anywhere and everywhere that I can think of. My son came here to have his graduation photo taken as told by UBC. On photo day, we came as a family as it stated in the email that they could do family shot too. The whole session should last about an hour. It only took 20 minutes or so! A deposit of $45 cash was given to them and a receipt was given to us. On this receipt, it just states that if you have no intention of buying, you should bring back the receipt within 60 days to get the refund. My husband and I went to get the refund today, but only then did the reception girl told me that my son had to be there because he was the one who signed the receipt. She even went and got the "lady person who is in this department" to come and talked to me. I argued saying the receipt didn't say WHO should be there so my son wasn't with me. This "lady person" said when they refund us, the person who signed the receipt has to be the same person to get the refund! She can't give the refund to another person with a different signature. I had to leave and pick up my son to come back again. When we returned back to the studio (same day), the reception girl started to tell my son that he signed the receipt and it's a legal thing and he should know for his own knowledge, etc. etc. I cut her off and said just give us the money back. At this time, this "lady person in this department" came and said again my son was the one who signed and should be there for refund. Then the man who took the photos for us that day came out too. I think he's the owner but not sure. He said, looking at me, "you are just making trouble for yourselves". Then this "lady person" sort of "patted" him asking to him to leave. He left. The reception girl then gave a piece of paper which is their refund receipt and asked my son to write "got a deposit refund of $45 cash on March 30, 2019" and he should sign under this sentence. Then I said I wanted to take a picture of this but the "lady person" quickly too the paper and said it's her property and I cannot have a picture of it. I said, my son wrote on it and signed it so I want a picture to for record. I was not allowed. Then we turned around and left. As we were leaving, I was pushing the door, I heard the reception girl said "don't come back again" behind our backs! What type of service is this? There's absolutely no customer service at all here and no respect! How can you say such things behind customers' backs? Is it because we're not buying their photos? I came for UBC grad photos and the set is fine, but their business model and online ordering is ridiculous. First they do not allow any sort of customization and separate group and individual shots in ordering, forcing you to buy multiple $150+ packages if you happened to want a photo of your grad gown and a photo of your family/friends. They way overcharge for digital photos as well, and tack on surprise processing and handling fees for everything. They say they do digital touch-ups, but that doesn't explain the price disparity between that and printed photos. If it were only the price, that's one thing, but the lack of options and clarity is also astounding. Options like frames and composites are only shown once you actually order. I cannot imagine why they'd separate personal and group photos aside from being able to charge more. I don't know why there haven't been competitors showing up nearby. Sure, if you want a photo of yourself washed out, slumped on a stool, and looking like you've just come in after an all night bender. There is a better way: go to this place. Had my photos taken after graduation, and have been unable to pick-up through the COVID pandemic. I called to arrange a pick up for paid photos of nearly $300 to be told they have been discarded because I did not pick them up within the "stated" 6 months. Shocked, I looked through all contact with the company and there is no mention of a mandatory 6 months nor even a call to pick the photos up, let alone a correspondence of a last call to pick up. They simply take your money, and do the minimum required for it and look for any excuse to keep it regardless of whether you get your products. There conduct is criminal and a scam. I cannot recommend highly enough to get grad photos elsewhere, get your photo for the wall there, then do the rest of the photos elsewhere. You cannot simply discard someone's paid property without notifying them--especially saying because of space in a pandemic. Your other option is to get some assortment of printed photos for ~$200, which you'll lose and then have no copy of your grad photos. The only reason these criminals are still in business is because they occupy a somewhat convenient location near campus. But ask yourself this: is $400 worth that small convenience? Please petition your student organization to find another provider of these services. There are millions of willing photographers out there. The only way these people continue to get away with this is because student organizations make agreements on behalf of their members. When you get there they force you to pay $40 deposit, then spring the real prices on you 2 weeks later once they've put them online. Absolutely agree with Danielle's review. They gave me and my friend attitude on the phone when we tried to book appointment and said something like "why did you even bother calling when you haven't decided on a time yet?" which really upset my friend. But we couldn't find any other options on grad photos nearby so we went thinking what can go wrong in a 15 minutes photo shoot. But from the start, they rush you through everything, gave you no time for makeup, doing your hair, and the man basically took control of the background, the props, the pose without consulting with me. When I suggested politely that I was not a big fan of the fake blue flowers and would rather have no flowers in my photos, the photographer was clearly annoyed and glared at me without saying a thing. And the worst part is yet to come, I was told that taking the pictures in August, meaning the peak grad photo season is over, would mean I could get the photos in two weeks. But after I ordered the pictures online, my friend called in and confirmed with them about the pickup time, was told we can only get our photos in mid-september. We asked them about a rushing fee and was told it would cost 60-80, and we would get our photos in the begining of September rather than mid-september, which is pointless for us. Sinceboth of us will be leaving Canada for overseas internships/ jobs at the end of August. Being the frustrated new grads like we are, we decided to go around and tell our friends to spare themselves some time and energy and to AVOID GOING TO EVANGELOS AT ALL COSTS. read more

TL;DR: DO NOT take your graduation photos here. Rude and condescending staff, pictures are of poor quality, and the price is absolutely ridiculous. Avoid at all costs, and try to find a different studio. I never leave reviews, but this business really forced me to go through the trouble of creating an account just to warn others of this studio. First of all, like many others have said before me, their pricing and packages for graduation photos is ludicrous. Prices are not displayed until you view them online, and then they hit you with extremely overpriced photos with underwhelming quality. The packages are poor as well - very little selection. The worst part was the service. We had a dispute when returning the receipt to get back our cash deposit, as it was only specified to "bring the receipt" in order to get our refund - however it doesn't specify exactly who needs to come and return it. This is seemingly very minor (and it is), so my family went to collect the deposit. Only after, do the staff tell them that *I* needed to show up and collect it, and so in a second trip out of our way, my family and I do. I'm met with the girl at the reception with a condescending tone explaining how I signed the receipt so I should be the one to show up. The only problem is it doesn't state the person who signed the receipt must show up - explicitly stating this is always better than implicit assumption. So we argue this point, and we are met with rude attitudes and again, more condescendence. The photographer even comes out and says "we are creating trouble for ourselves". What kind of customer service is this? It felt like he was blaming *US* for their inaccurate instructions. This is ridiculous - this business doesn't even respect its customers. This place is just plain horrible...unprofessional...RUDE!!!! I go to UBC and it is VERY unfortunate that my department had to pick this place for our graduation pictures. From the moment that I stepped in for my 9:30am appointment, they were rude to me. I asked where was their free parking and they gave me attitude and just said it was in the back. Turned out, it was at the side of the building. Was it that hard to just say that? When it came time for my grad pictures, it seemed like they were very rushed and I do not know why...because I was their first customer of the day. Not once did they allow me to fix my hair or retouched my make-up (it states online that I could because there will be a room provided to do so). Also, I do not understand why the photographer keeps putting the cap on and off? Does he not know that this flattens your hair? The props used were old and super tacky. The flowers they used were fake and only consisted of 5-6 stems...not even a bouquet! They took a lot of pictures with the gown/flowers but only 3 gown/cap/UBC folder. Since this is my graduation picture...I would have liked more options with the gown/cap/folder. The backgrounds were ugly. What is with the Greek background??? Also, what is with the stupid globe??? and the old dirty Winnie the Pooh bear??? The 2 pictures I ended up picking... 1 was a decent simple gown/flowers. The second was gown/cap/flowers with half the photo being the background. There was so much space above my head!!! My family was there with me for my group shot and the photographer literally insulted my family. My parents do not understand English well and I was translating the directions the whole time. My sister is also a Special Needs adult, who does not take directions well. The photographer said to them bluntly...."You are not taking my directions very well and because you were late, I'm not going to take a lot of pictures for you" Who in the world would say that to their customers???? Also, we were definitely NOT late. This is so unprofessional, they should just close their business. I will be honest in saying that in terms of restoration work these guys do a good job of basic restoration of old photos. I had to use them to get some of my mom's pics of when she was younger for her birthday card. The business approach was a bit too pushy which annoyed and angered me. Because of this I won't go back but this was a special occasion. This place came as a recommendation from another Yelper. Instead of 1 star I am giving it to 'cause of the fair restoration work. Horrible service - the staff are very rude and unprofessional. Their whole deposit situation is also not explained very well. I got an email from UBC and from Evangelos when I booked my grad photos, which both said the deposit is 100% refundable given that you request it back, ordering is not mandatory, the basic photos are mandatory and optional photos are taken for free as well. So, I go into the studio fully understanding these conditions and not thinking to read the page that I'm signing. A few days later and I am not impressed with my photos, so I call to get the deposit back. They told me that they changed their policy and the form that I signed says that the deposit is non-refundable - basically forcing me to order photos from them (which are very overpriced - 280$ for a digital copy of 5 photos). The lady said that I could have told the front desk that I only wanted a composite photo (which I did once the photographer started taking weird photos of me holding dumb stuff - and she went to tell the front desk) and the 45 deposit fee would have been waved. The front desk never gave me that option and said that the deposit is mandatory. UBC Students: get your composite photo done here and do not pay the deposit then go somewhere else! read more

I have had an experience of getting my graduation pictures done at Evangelos. This is a standard procedure for all UBC students. If you want your picture taken in the UBC regalia, Evangelos is the only place it can be done, unfotunately. I was shocked to find out about the prices... For example to order ONE picture sized 11X14 you have to pay $110.95... you don't even get a digital copy of the picture, just ONE physical copy for $110.95. If you want digital copies, the only option is ordering 20 retouched pictures on a CD for $395.95. I really want my grad pictures, but I can't afford them. I phoned them to ask if I can order a CD with digital copies of three images, and they said NO, when I asked why not, the woman on the telephone said "why should I?". Rude to say the least. They are spoiled with customers who do not know what they will have to pay for the pictures at the time they go for a shooting. They have good equipment and everything is good, but pardon me for saying that graduate pictures t Evangelos is nothing but a ripoff. read more

Went there to take my UBC Grad photos this year (2016, graduating 2017). To give credit where it's needed I have to say I was not rushed, like people who left the previous reviews...the photographer spent full 1 hour and a half on my photo session, was super gallant and attentive and deserves the highest rating. I wore all the dresses I brought, I like the poses and pictures and everything. Now to the other side. They give one 5*7 picture for free if you order exceeds $100 but guess what...that picture has to be the one pose you chose for your UBC grad frame. Seems really weird to me because I don't really want that pose, I'd rather choose my free picture myself and when I call and ask whether they'd allow me to choose it they first hang up on me, then after I call again they say we don't make any other pictures for free, just that one pose. The lady I'm talking to over the phone is extremely rude, even the tone of voice is so harsh I receive the impression she wants to get rid of me right this moment cause I'm taking up her time. I'm spending over $180 to order 4 custom phootos and all I ask is to choose a free picture myself!!! Well, just for information I'll add that you have to wait 5-6 weeks to pick up your pictures so plan ahead if you want to give those to your parents for Christmas. The reason for such a long wait is because they custom print, retouch, and process of the pictures individually. Another interesting thing is that packages they offer are kind of weird: 1 pose: one 8*10, two 5*7, four 4*5 for $88 before tax (why have so many copies of one pose? for many relatives probably, but that's not my case) 2 poses: two- 8x10, two - 5x7, four- 4x5, eight wallets for $128 before tax similarly 3 poses for $190, 4 poses for $218, 5 for $273, 6 for $336 with one-16x20, one-11x14, three-8x10, six-5x7, eight-4x5, eight-wallets. But you have an opportunity to choose individual prints, which is nice: 8 wallets for $40, four 4*5 for $40, one 5*7 for $34, one 8*10 for $40, one 11x14 for $90, etc. I'm not a photographer and don't know how reasonable he price is, but I'm happy to have an opportunity to choose my pictures myself. Hmm, finally I say it could be much better but what's sad is that we don't have a choice: all UBC undergrads are directed to Evangelos Photography as they have all the needed props like university diplomas, signs, and regalia, so they really lack free market competition there. read more

I would recommend avoiding the use of this business's services at all costs. It is clear that the University of British Columbia has a contract with the company and consequently, they no longer feel the need to provide competitive pricing and services. My experience with the company took place this past year, where I went to Evangelos to obtain my graduation photos. The staff made me wait well beyond my appointment time without even an apology; showing great disrespect for the clients which are paramount to its business. All of the staff employed to take the photos were highly inexperienced students, which showed during the session. They spent no longer than 8 minutes on my photos, used the wrong gown for my masters degree despite being told at the beginning of the session, and charged an absurd amount for their less than satisfactory services. During my undergraduate at the University of Alberta, our department had a professional photographer with nearly 30 years of experience, gave us a fun and enjoyable session, made our booking period longer than required to ensure that we were satisfied with the photos, and did it all for a much more reasonable price than Evangelos. After placing a multi-hundred dollar order with Evangelos for my graduation photos, I simply asked the company if they could email me an electronic low quality, unedited thumbnail of a funny picture I took to post on my Instagram. After waiting 2 WEEKS for them to respond, they informed me that I would have to buy their $100+ photo package if I wanted the picture. Once again, this reinforces my point that the company has far less than adequate customer service. It is clear that the company has become too "cozy" in their contract with the University, and only cares about money rather than customer satisfaction. There are numerous cheaper and far better companies in the Vancouver area, and I encourage everyone to avoid this company at all cost; after all, this is one of the biggest moments in your life, don't let a company like Evangelos negatively impact it in an way. read more

If you have the luxury of choosing where to have your grad photos done, I would NOT recommend Evangelos Photography. If you are on a committee and deciding what studio is suitable for your graduation class, please consider something else. I would not have chosen this studio for myself, but many students like myself will find themselves here because they have no say in where to go for their composite photo. My experience here was as awful as another has described: rude owners, rushed staff, tacky backgrounds, and a bizarre online/phone booking system. I went in with a positive attitude due to their online booking system and that they were so close to where I live. Once my session had begun, however, I was hurried along as quickly as possible and was left disappointed with the experience. I'm also disappointed with the final product. Many of the photos feel amateurish. The two young photographers that started my session were very kind but inexperienced. However, the two older men who seem to own/manage the location were fairly pushy when I took photos with them. If you have other options, please consider them. read more

I havent gotten my photos yet so I dont know about the quality of their photos but the girl who took my photos and the reception lady was really kind! I locked my purse with my cell in my car prior to my appointment and was panicking on what to do. They let me borrow the phone and still took my photos for my appointment. Later they even helped me call the locksmith to have my car opened. They were very kind and approachable ! so two thumbs up for the employees! read more

The owner is incredibly customer-oriented and the photographers are very good at directing your poses. It is far more intimate than other Vancouver photography studios which have more of a rushed, corporate feel. read more

Worst customer service I have ever experienced! Trying to make a copy of my parents' wedding photo taken at Evangelos 37 years ago. There's a copyright on the photo, which is standard for the industry so I phone the store to discuss my options. Evangelos will make a copy for me with a quote of $55, but this is laughable as London Drugs will do the same thing for less than $10. I'm told over the phone that if I take the photo to the Evangelos shop they will give me permission to make my own copies. Great! So I drive 45 minutes to the store, they take one look at the photo and say "okay" ... that's it. I ask for something to be written down granting me permission and the staff member replies "no, we don't do that. Just have London Drugs call us and we'll say it's okay." This sounds weird to me so I inquire a little deeper, "You're sure? Can't you just write down on any piece of paper you give permission and sign it?" to which she replies "No, no, no...we do this all the time. They know us, they'll call" Waste of my time, but whatever, I return to London Drugs the next day and try to make a copy. The photo department won't do it, they need written permission because it's policy and they'll get in trouble if they stray. I'm annoyed, but at Evangelos because I understand the policy is to cover London Drugs' ass. Once again I'm on the phone with Evangelos and asking them to fax permission over to London Drugs, they say they'll call me back. 30 minutes go by with me waiting in the store. I call back, they put me on the phone with the owner, he says he's not going to waste his time writing permission on a piece of paper and faxing it! Won't waste 5 minutes of his time...he'd rather spend that time arguing with me on the phone. I ask how much he'd charge for a print now...he starts to say he won't for me (after calling me a liar for saying London Drugs won't make a copy), but stops himself and quotes $38 for a print. Less than the last quote, but do they just make up their prices on the fly? The owner was rude, lazy, unhelpful and straight up disrespectful. Avoid EvangeNOs Photography Ltd at any cost! Had gone here for many years to get passport photos, and has been by far the BEST place to get a picture, that is going to be looked at for the next 5-10 years. Did the brutal mistake of going to another place this time to get them done quickly by the reviews on YELP, never again. I will make the time to come here again. Totally worth it ! read more

Rude and unprofessional staff! Owners or manager never seem to be around when you wish to take up your concerns with them. I've been assured I'd have my phone call returned...three times. Still waiting. read more
