As a business man myself, I believe in supporting small private owners, so I brought in a service vehicle in that I very much need 5 to 6 days a week. It was overheating, maby a broken belt, not sure, got it in there late one afternoon, and I was told it would be looked at first thing the following morning. About 10 the next morning I contacted the shop, and was told they had not yet had time to look at it, I asked when they would have time, I got a snie answer that they had a week worth of work ahead of my vehicle, so maby I should take my vehicle elsewhere. I was traveling back to NJ when I got a flat at 4 AM on I95. AAA recommended Evan's auto center and since I had a run flat tire I was able to make it there and waited until they opened at 8. Although they didn't have run flat tires in stock (they said they could have one shipped over in the afternoon if I wanted to wait) they did have others. As I had a long road ahead of my I decided to go with what they had in stock. They got me in and I was back on the road by 9AM! I had a long history of taking my vehicles to Evans to get serviced. I sent family and friends their way with enthusiasm. I spent thousands of dollars throughout the years, and generally was left satisfied. This all changed a week ago. I purchased a vehicle 8 months ago that had a rust problem. I knew this and understand my responsibility in purchasing such a vehicle. When I took it to Evans, I expressed my concern about the rust and asked for their professional opinion. I asked if it was worth spending $3,000 on the car to make it road worthy and long lasting. They advised me that it was a sound investment, so I pulled the trigger and paid them to rebuild the rear differential. 6 months later, the brakes have started to fail, and I took it in to get them replaced. I was informed it was a 1600 charge to bring the car to a usable condition. I asked if it was worth it - they said no, and handed my number to a mechanic who made a $300 offer to buy the car. The same business that allowed me to spend $3000 just a few months prior valued it at 1/10 of the cost of repairs. I returned to the business to ask how this could happen, and why I was encouraged to invest this money when they knew the car was virtually worthless. I was told that the mechanic was in no place to make an offer, and that putting the 1600 into the brakes would be a good idea. I asked for my keys and said I would never be back. My faith in the business has been shattered, and I will never spend another dollar there. I'm lucky to have purchased a brand new car that I very much enjoy. Your experience might be different - and I hope so, but after spending so much at Evans, I am extremely disappointed with the experience that drove me from every supporting their business again. read more

I had a flat tire and shopped around for a great price at a LOCAL, not chain or franchised, tire shop. I was driving on the donut spare and pulled in Thursday afternoon. The gent behind the counter, Nate, addresses my concern and gave me a great price on two new tires. I pulled in Friday morning at 7:30 (they open at 8:00), signed off on the work and hopped in their courtesy vehicle for a ride to my job. I called them at 4:30pm (they close at 5:00pm), gave them my payment info over the phone, picked up my keys from a secured lock box and drove home. DON'T go to these chain tire stores; shop and spend at local shops. You won't go wrong with Evans! read more

I've had work done at Evans auto before, simple head gasket on a 4 cylinder...job was performed well.. though a year later an aftermarket gasket Evans replaced for the intake was leaking profusely (out of Evans warranty) .. I wasn't given a choice of dealer parts or aftermarket so that was that,.. I recently had another vehicle that needed motor mounts, another 4 cylinder car, the new motor mounts are slotted, made horizontal and vertically adjustable and _need to be aligned or set in place properly so the exhaust doesn't rub on the undercarriage, ...that was not done, so it rattles like crazy, and when delivering my car for this repair the manager was asked if car can be left near garage where the battery can be easily charged, as my battery was weak from sitting, manager said he had 'no tech' available to perform this task, so be it, I parked it across the way in their parking lot expecting the battery would be charged, I returned after a call a day or two later that the automobile was ready, i paid my bill and said I would pick up car after closing and to lock my car as I had another key... I was charged nearly twice the national average cost $370.oo to replace my cars motor mounts and ... i provided the parts, then when i arrived to pick up my car ... of course the battery was stone dead, 8 pm at night with a neighbor giving me a ride and me in my wheelchair, we spent hours trying to charge my battery with some inferior battery jumpers until success, then it died at the gas station getting fuel, another half hour to charge it up to get home, I charged the battery the next day at home and it starts fine ever since ___ though with the exhaust Still rubbing on the frame as did with the old broken motor mounts, AND its exactly why I replaced the broken motor mounts in the first place, ... I traveled 80 miles twice to get the same satisfaction as my first Evans auto experience years before... that did not happen .. Evans auto? never Again read more

A group of us decided to make the long trek down from Chicago to St. Augustine for vacation. A few days after arriving the check engine light came on so I went to AutoZone to do a base level diagnostic scan. They referred me to Evan's Automotive where I met with Charlie. He was great but said that he believed it was a software update but didn't have the Mopar software and would have to go to a Jeep Authorized dealership (Atlantic Dodge) or Poko Bro's. I called the Jeep dealership, explained that we were driving back home in two days and they were unable to accommodate. I drove over to Poko, where I met Ted, he took the time to understand our concern, and was able to drop what he was doing and resolve / fix within 15 minutes. Moral of the Story, both Evan's and Poko are two competing businesses within a mile from one another that work together to help a group of vacationers from Chicago. The dealership did not. read more

We bring our cars to Evans for regular maintenance. As an example, we recently had an issue with one of the tires we purchased at least 2 years ago. We had our car packed full of stuff to take home after vacation and heading home. we were on a dark road that had construction of a mall parking lot on it. miles away from where we were staying. i hit an unmarked curb at a low speed but blue the tire bent the wheel and damaged the underneath knee joint assembly for the steering. i contacted triple AAA and they hooked us up with EVANS AUTO & TIRE 20 miles away. we had AAA tow us to EVANS and they could get everything that we needed to repair the car. they hooked us up with phone # of motels to call and graciously used their shuttle service to transport us back to where we stayed and to remove our belongings and transported us to the new hotel where we sent the next week waiting for parts. Evans was so gracious and helpful I'm not sure what we would have done if they were not involved. thank you so much for your help and kindness, and a huge thank you to their rep I dealt with Justin thank you for going out of your way with kindness. i would highly recommend this company to anyone in need of help and a fair shake. Wish I could give less than zero. I made a reservation for 8:30 am, about a week ago. I brought my Acura in, gave the guy at counter my info and keys. They were going to look at alignment issues. So I waited. After sitting for close to an hour I went outside for some air, and there sat my car, in the same parking space as when I arrived. Hadn't been touched! WTF? I asked the guy what happened and he said hold on, we'll get to it now. I told them to hand over my keys and I split. Obviously a sign of complete incompetence. Avoid like the plague. read more

I live in St Augustine 6 months and St Paul the other 6. I used to take my Volvo to the dealer in J-Ville. A simple oil change was always over $100. More than that in St Paul. A friend who drives a BMW told me about Evans. I can not recommend them highly enough. When the dealer said I needed brakes, they said you've got at least 10K left on them. Same same with tires. When I was heading back to St Paul, I stopped in and asked if they would take a look to make sure everything looked okay. I didn't ask what the bill would be. An hour later, they delivered my car to the curb and said it was fine. And no charge, we take care of our regular customers! They treat you more like a client than my investment advisor. The negative reviews, in my opinion, are probably coming from people that drive "beaters" that need a ton of work. And their owners are surprised at the bill? Just sayin'. read more

I wouldn't recommend this place at all. What reputable tire center doesn't offer a road hazard warranty on their tires?? THESE GUYS!! I had a nail in my BRAND NEW tire that couldn't be patched/repaired and they claim they don't offer a road hazard warranty and I was responsible for the full cost of replacing the new tire. I'm pretty certain I was told they offered this coverage upon purchasing them. And just out of curiosity I called several other tire centers in town to see if this is just something that these places aren't offering anymore...NOPE..all 3 places I called said they offer road hazard when new tires are purchased through them. This is not the first questionable experience I've had with these guys but it will certainly be the last. I left Evans and went to Atlantic Automotive...paid $3 less for the exact same tire in question and it's 100% covered by road hazard...INCLUDED in the price of the new tire, as it should be. There's a lot of junk in the roadways so do yourself a favor..buy new tires with the peace of mind that they are insured....DO NOT BUY THEM FROM EVANS AUTOMOTIVE. Went in with an overheating issue. They diagnosed and replaced a thermostat housing in my Jeep. Next day, couple hundred miles up the road, I looked to see my temp gauge was pegged, max temp. I pulled over and the Jeep was up in a flume of white smoke. I opened the hood to find the heater hose (connected to thermostat housing) sliced along the edge at the hose clamp. Coolant was pooled absolutely everywhere in the engine bay! When I called Evans, they said "Old Jeep, old hose, capable of anything that can happen". My question: "Wasnt the hose 'old' when they serviced the thermostat housing"? Odd that it sliced along the edge of the hose clamp they positioned and tightened, isnt it? I cut at the slice and repositioned and tightened the hose clamp (properly) but they caused water in the oil due to a blown head gasket. Thanks for nothing Evans! I've long advocated for "if you want something done right, do it yourself". Just another example here. PS Ive worked at an autoshop (out of town) for 15 years. read more

We were in St Augustine this spring and had some concerns about a strange noise coming from the front end of our car. After searching for someone to analyze the situation we saw that Evans was a AAA service center. We went in without calling first. After a very short wait, a technician took the vehicle for a test drive. They then examined the car and took us along for another drive to replicate the noise. It turned out that the noise was coming from the front tires which were wearing unevenly. We were assured that we could make it back to Massachusetts without worrying about it. And they refused payment. We were very favorably impressed with responsiveness and professionalism of this shop. If we are in need of automotive service on future visits to St. Augustine, we wouldn't hesitate to go back. read more

I'm from VA & was in St Aug for one night on business & pulled into my hotel on a late Wed. afternoon & my SUV died. I called my company's local office and asked who to take it to. My coworkers & some customers there at the time all recommended Evans. I called them & explained my situation to Rob & told him I thought it was the alternator. He said they were pretty busy but he looked @ my alternator's physical location (online I'm guessing) & said to have it towed there & he would see what they could do. By the time AAA towing got to me & got it to Evans I'm guessing it was 5pm or later. After a night of worrying about my situation especially since I was supposed to meet up w/ my wife in Tampa on Saturday, I had a call from Justin @ 7:30am to get all my info & discuss the situation. At 9:20am, Justin had a diagnosis, source for the part & price for me. At 11:30am, my vehicle was ready to go. Water pump went out on my vehicle. I went to Evan's on a recommendation and showed up before they opened. The service writer was in the parking lot and asked if I needed any assistance. He came on over to my vehicle, looked and confirmed that the pump was in fact leaking. I got a phone call about an hour later and was advised that my vehicle would be ready at lunch time and was a little less expensive than they quoted me. I grew up in St Augustine, and have been bringing all of my vehicles in for tires and service since Evans Automotive opened. At no time have I ever gotten anything but friendly helpful service at a fair price. I've had them check things that I thought might have an issue and have them tell me that these items are fine and don't need to be repaired on multiple occasions. Once it was for front brakes, the other it was for a front end alignment. What I thought was an alignment issue was just a tire that was out of balance. On the brakes, it was something that just needed adjusting - not new rotors/pads which was what I thought it was. I would not hesitate for a second to send anyone here with all the confidence in the world that they are the best in town. read more

On 4/23/2011 I had Evans Auto replace the hub and bearings on the left front and do a full brake job.for $715 They checked both bearing at that time. On 1/03/2013 they had to redo the the left hub and bearing and do the right for a cost of $590. So in less than two years they had to do the same job twice fo something that should last the life of a car. I asked them about it and they said the bearing are only warranty for one year nothing about quality of their work. This is what I am am going to tell everyone I know. Took the vehicle at in at 8 AM and it was in the shop at 8:10 ... the alignment and two front tires later along with the oil change and was back on the road by 10. I took my car to Evans for more than 2 years. I thought they were honest and were giving me a fair deal...but their scam fell apart. After multiple repairs costing almost $3000 in the end, for which one did not fix the problem, and another I had to return twice because they did not complete the repair correctly, and another was not only not done correctly, but they returned my car to me with gasoline POURING from underneath my car (can you say HAZARDOUS?), and additional repairs for things that were mysteriously broken after Evans worked on my car - even though I'd never had a problem with those parts previously. The final straw was another case of a part that suddenly needed replacing. The meter in my gas tank that had NEVER caused a problem, was suddenly broken after they worked on my gas tank. They offered as a FAVOR to replace it for just the cost of the part which they said was $475, and no labor charge. Well, I had the problem part replaced at another mechanic for less than $200 - parts and labor!!! Looking back over my bills, I'm convinced that Evans was cheating me all along, and it just took me 2 years to figure it out because they are skilled liars. I believe that anyone that thinks they are honest just hasn't caught them yet. I will NEVER go there again. My car is older and requires fairly regular maintenance and over the past year, my bills have not been even 1/2 of what they were at Evans...and my car is running better than ever. My repair expenses are lower even though less than 1 month after, I had to replace the crappy (probably after-market) fuel pump that Evans put in (Evans charged me $1200, other mechanic charged me $800). I was within my warranty on the fuel pump repair, but I preferred to pay for another repair rather than let Evans touch my car again. Since I stopped going to Evans....I have no more sudden and mysterious problems popping up. Go figure. I recommend Atlantic Automotive on Beach A1A. read more

Wrong brakes put on - still a problem, wrong catalytic converter put on, had to go back - weird sound now from under hood - sounds like transmission or exhaust, transmission flush ended up with my transmission leaking fluid for 2 days after flush, noticed fluid all over my driveway. Had to wait until I could call them on a Monday to have it fixed. Recently had my tires rotated and new brakes adjusted there, now my left front end feels like it is floating and when I brake there is an uneven roll to the brakes. My rear brakes squeak when stopped and I press down on the brake pedal. Have to take more time off of work to go back and see if they can "fix" these problems. Tempted just to take it elsewhere, except that would mean more out of pocket. Also, my water pump they replaced went out after 1 1/2 years. Who ever heard about that? read more

Very upset with service. Car would not turn on...had AAA tow it in. There was a alternator problem however was told a new battery and cables would fix it. The battery was only 1 and half years old. They tested it and said it needed to be replaced. Days later the car would not start not even with a jump. Went to Evans to explain problem was told we should have put a new alternator in. I asked why did you install a new battery knowing that? No answer. Bottom they pulled out a perfectly good battery and put in a new one when they only had to do the alternator. We have installed in a new alternator, however will not use them again. In addition the last time we had work they did not close the hood completely and it opened up while driving down the road, thank God no one was hurt. No stars warranted. read more
