I was quoted $215 for a complete eye exam including a new Rx for contacts. During the exam Dr Evan's said "I'm going to do a couple of tests before we issue your Rx." Dr Evan's never disclosed there would be an extra charge and the tests kept piling up to the tune of over $700 which I only discovered a week later when bills started coming in the mail. Further, Dr Evan's told me I needed other tests (from his office) and expensive eye drops that two other local Doctors later told me I did not need. If you have insurance your insurance company will likely dispute the charges, if you don't watch out. I disputed the charges and later settled for $300 and went to another local Doctor whom I paid to repeat my exam for $180. Was told I did not need expensive drops nor any of the tests Dr Evan's tried to sell. read more

I have been under Dr. Evan's care for the past few years never had a good vibe. My bad for sticking with him. I would not recommend him because of the following reasons: 1. Dr. exercises a TON of medical caution - hard to tell whether he is genuinely thorough or just trying to do a bunch of tests so he can bill insurance co. and patients. If you do go, ask cuz they are not too clear about tests and costs. And the Dr. makes you feel that you're comprising big time if you skip these tests. 2. The Dr. had me tried a certain brand of contact lenses. After the initial box I switched back to my previous brand (prescribed by previous eye doctor from out of state). Dr. Evans REFUSES to write a prescription with my preferred brand even though he examined me in them earlier! I find it appalling that the Dr. dictates the brand of contact lenses I buy and totally ignore my feedback as his patient. 3. Always have to wait for the appointment - at least 30-40 mins behind. Lastly, "Dr." Evans speaks like an Opthalmology but he's NOT a M.D. He is the head of the practice however he is an Optometrist. The other "MDs" are in his office part time so if you have serious eye issues, find a real eye specialist elsewhere! read more

This is a review from 2012. Dr Shahriari was very nice, professional, attentive and thorough. I had no problems with her. As a matter of fact if everyone was at her level they would get 5 stars. Firstly, I had to wait a long time to see the doctor. Then when I finished the receptionists seemed very confused. They stated I had to spend my insurance credit there. I agreed because I was going to anyway. Then I had to pay a $150 contact fitting fee even though I have worn contacts for 30 years! . So I ordered my contact lenses (they insisted on Biofinity even though I was happy with my J&J Acuvue 2's) and asked for a copy of my rx. They then refused to give me my rx. I left because I was so annoyed. My wife then called and talked to Dr Evans and they agreed to give me a copy but I had to go pick it up because they would not mail it to me. So I had to make a second trip for some unknown reason. The front desk of this place really sucks badly. So in summary, I had to pay $150 and leave with no rx! I understand that they want to keep your business and rx. But that is easily achieved by ALL THE STAFF BEING NICE AND PROFESSIONAL AND NOT BEING MONEY GRUBBERS! Listen, Dr Evans......they are ruining your reputation. For my and my wife's upcoming appointment we will not return. read more

After reading the reviews here, I was really worried about taking my 80 yr. old mother in to see him, but believe it or not, the other 2 choices we had had even worse reviews. I was very pleasantly surprised. The staff was very nice. When the 'nurse' took us in to dilate her eyes, he explained everything well as to what was about to happen. There was a sheet in the forms to be filled out for extra tests, but the cost was only an extra $58 and he didn't pressure me to take them at all. The doctor came in shortly after the nurse was done to do the actual eye exam etc. Turns out my mother has cataract, so we aren't done yet, but we should be so lucky the rest goes as well and smoothly as this has. read more

I would give them five stars except for the hours they keep. If you work, it's difficult to get there because they close at 4 PM and they have no hours on Saturday! Frustrating. I am only giving them one star because I cannot give less. My wife went to their clinic, was told she would not be charged for part of the procedure, then received a bill for that procedure. In our opinion, the staff is rude, obnoxious and unprofessional. We asked that the Doctor call us back; instead my wife was told they would simply turn the matter over for collection. We ultimately paid the bill. Money was not the problem; service was. Again, in our opinion, this practice is a joke; I'd rather have my eyes checked at Jiffy Lube. read more

Jezabelle (or whatever her name is) was nice in the begining but once I questioned her on the "fitting fee" for contacts (that was $114-$150) and why they charge that, she told me I should call my insurance company and ask them. And I said "are they the ones charging that? Or are you?" She said that they were, not the insurance company. So then why would I call and ask them? She didn't want to explain it to me because there is no way to explain it to be legit! She then hung up on me! Real professional. I was thrilled to learn from a weekly newspaper the docotr..Evans, had a new test for Sjogren disease. Well dont blieve everything you read . Nightmare experience, Horrible staff. I called many times over 3 weeks to get an appoiintment and was never called back. Finally I talked to a girl and tried to explain what had happened and what I wanted. She told me I was a liar , she also hung up on me. Now I am learning NO doctors I know would comment on their intergrity . Never, never go there . The female optometrist in the office told me on 2 occasions that my eye pressure, based on the air puff method and imaging of my retina, put me in the glaucoma range. She also said that there was already some damage to the optic nerves. She also told me that my ducts were too narrow, which was causing the increased pressure and that I would need surgery to open them up. When she was telling me this, she had trouble looking at me directly and was constantly averting her eyes. Although this raised a red flag for me, I agreed to more testing. After the tests were administered (more billing for the clinic) she said she needed more time to review the data and would call me later to discuss the results. She never did. Guess it wasn't important. On a recent trip back to Chicago, I made an appointment to see my former optometrist, who was a full professor at the Illinois College of Optometry. He did the glaucoma test using the "gold standard" method of testing, the Applaonation Topometry test. My eye pressure was in the normal range, and at the lower end. There is no damage to my optic nerves, and my ducts are perfectly open. He said that the air puff method is very unreliable and a recent study shows a 66% over diagnosis of glaucoma with it. Perhaps the test used at Evans is quicker to administer. They use it on lots of people at every visit whether indicated or not. They did once to my husband at a routine eye glass fitting and then charged him $20 for it, which wasn't covered by our insurance. My husband refused to pay it, since he didn't request it or need it. They sent his bill to collection, which resulted in a hit on our credit score. I'd be wary of considering this office. read more

I have gone to Evans Eye care 2 times now, both for annual eye care visits. Since they have moved to the Palm Desert office, I have found the office to be extremely clean, with a large waiting room and plenty of water and magazines on hand to pass the wait time which has never been longer than 20 minutes. I found the staff to be courteous, knowledgeable and most importantly amazing with my children even going into the back office to offer a piece of candy to each of my kids. Very professional and happy to oblige with my phone call request to fax my prescription in a timely manner. If you are looking for friendly people who care about customer service, I would recommend this eye care facility. Would also like to add, I do not like getting the drops needed for dilation and they did inform me I could use another method, it was a machine I believe instead that can be used in lieu of the dilating drops. I was told there would be an additional cost and I opted to do that. I too, am always worried about hidden charges so prior to going in, I went over all of the fees for the visit and there were no surprises at all during my visit for myself or my 6 year old. read more

Our family went to Evans for years for routine eye care. In late 2014 I began to have a sudden and alarming deterioration in my vision. I trusted "Dr." Evans to care for this very scary situation, and it was only upon going to see a specialist that he recommended that I was told that A) he is not a Dr. and not an Opthamologist and B) never should have been treating my case at all when he saw the condition of my optic nerves. Every eye professional I have spoken with and been treated by since, including a neurologist in Palm Springs and a neruological opthamologist at UCLA has told me that I was in danger of losing my vision permanently if I had not insisted on further exams/treatments and specialists. The situation is under control, but Evans put me in severe danger because of his ego and cavalier attitude. Do not go to this practice. read more

Like another reviewer, we have been patients of Evans for several years. Initially we figured the office disorganization was due to them moving or training new people. We had the same thoughts when he signed and sent a letter to me after an eye appointment telling me I needed additional tests that he told me during my appointment that I absolutely didn't need. The same thoughts occurred to us when we received correspondence signed by Evans that was addressed to other patients we didn't know. What we know for sure is the service has substantially gone down hill and the costs have increased substantially. The tricky part about the increasing costs is that you aren't told how expensive contacts are until you get the bill later. Unprofessional and unkind to say the least. On a routine annual exam and contact lens check-up, he was offering a new brand of contacts. Been there, done that. Just wanted the old ones. Just try them, he said. Took them home and, fortunately didn't try them before the bill came. $650 for one pair. Called immediately and told the person who answered in no way did I want to purchase $650 lenses. I wasn't told how much they were and I would be bringing them back. Brought them back and the receptionist was happy to take them back, but insisted that I pay for the $199 contact lens fitting. Another charge they conveniently forgot to talk about. Between the lenses, the fitting, the expanded exam and the base exam charge, happy birthday ... Here's your $1000 invoice that we didn't tell you about while you were here. Bottom line, what was once a good place to go has turned into quite a money pit that is more focused on product rather than on customer service or professional and transparent treatment of their customers. I've been a client of Dr. Evans for a number of years and I'm about to leave his practice. His office is run so poorly. Two weeks ago, I had an appointment and I got an email indicating my appointment was cancelled. HUH? I called and the rude person who answered the phone said she wasn't responsible for the schedule. I asked to speak to the person who was responsible and she indicated no one. REALLY? I rescheduled for later that day. Yesterday, I went in for the contact lens fitting follow up and waited over an hour for my appointment. UNACCEPTABLE! I think Dr. Evans is a fine doctor but his staff is absolutely horrible. Inept. I like Dr. Evans, but I almost always end up waiting 20-30 minutes...once it was over an hour.

I went to Dr. Evans thinking he was an MD but he's not. My bad for not checking further. I told him I had an allergy to Sulpha but he prescribed drops with Sulpha and I had a horrible reaction. His response was that it usually doesn't relate to eye drops....Then he said I needed cataract surgery and sent me to Dr. Wainess who comes to town, does the surgeries and goes on to the next town. During the surgery pieces of the cataract fell into my eye. I never saw Dr. Wainess again. He didn't see the results of his work. The day after surgery Dr. Evans sent me to the CA Retina Center, Dr. Samuels who after 10 days of agony did surgery to remove the cataract pieces....only he didn't do a complete job and weeks later I lost vision in the eye and had further complications. Dr. Samuels was cavalier about it and wanted to do another surgery to get out the remaining pieces. Needless to say I went to another retina surgeon who had a careful and complete job. Dr. Evans never check on me, no follow up, Dr. Wainess never followed up. By the way, the eye they operated on was the better of my two eyes and multiple doctors have said the "bad eye" does not need cataract surgery so I suspect I was offered cataract surgery that I didn't need. Its been 8 moths, three eye surgeries, 7 doctors, and I'm left with high pressure and dry eye neither of which I had before I went to Dr. Evans, Dr. Wainess and Dr. Samuel. And my vision in that eye after all this trauma is worse than it was before all this. Run, don't walk away from Evans Eye Care and anyone they refer you to. read more

My initial visit with Dr Evans was about two years ago. I have always had my eyes checked once every year and my visits here have been the most thorough exams I have ever had. Everything was explained, I never once felt that any procedure was unnecessary nor have I ever felt pressured. The staff is very professional and courteous, the office is modern and meticulously clean, the equipment the most up to date available. I have rarely had to wait more than 10 minutes. I am aware that when a Doctors office runs late it is usually because of unforeseen circumstances with a patient that requires more time than was originally thought, I am fine with that. I was visiting Palm Springs from out of town. I had called a few ophthalmologist without luck regarding an eyelid irritation. Thinking they could provide ophthalmology services, I called them for an appointment. When I arrived, they only had an optometrist. After checking with my PPO, in addition to the co-pay, they told me they had to charge me an additional 30 dollar non-emergency same day appointment fee. Not only did I not ask for a same day appointment, they waited until I had already wasted 30 minutes and filled out all my paper work before telling me. I decided I didn't want to be treated by someone who treats their patients in such a dishonest manner. What a waste of time. read more

Please, be very careful when selecting this practice. While likely being competent for delivering optometry services, the practice management leaves much room for improvement. On a recent visit I was referred to an ophthalmologist associated with the practice who visits the practice several times each month from LA. The MD's service was first rate. An eye medication was ordered. The physician mentioned that I should return 2 weeks after starting the medication to have my eye pressure tested. I returned to the office two weeks later and was asked to wait in the waiting area. The physician was visiting with a patient in the room. He interrupted the visit to quickly measure my eye pressure which was normal. He bid me goodbye and I left. One week later a bill for $20 arrived for the visit. I called to discuss the charge and was told it's a minimum charge and it would not be waived. I mentioned that this wasn't appropriate for a 2 minute drive-by visit. The woman became surly saying "pay the charge or they would send the account to collections." As others have mentioned, she hung up on me. One week later a collector called to demand payment. I decided to simply pay the $20 and move on. Today the office called to reject my check. They again became surly and said, "Mail another check to the collection agency." And hung up. A final insult: the practice reported the issue to two credit agencies. Need I mention I will not be returning, and others should be aware of how the practice treats patients read more

My problem was more complicated than a simple repair, but their assistant Debbie took care of it completely. We were total strangers but everyone treated us as if we were lifelong patients. tried to make an appointment with this unknowledgable office staff - i first spoke with the doctor who said with my vsp coverage, i would get a complete exam covered by vsp for $30.00 including testing for glaucoma, floaters, etc. and that my lenses and frames would be about $300.00 less the 2 coupons offered for $125.00. when i called the office back, they changed the story!! front desk personnel know nothing about customer service and contradict original pricing. i said "cancel the appointment - i will look elsewhere" not recommended if you are a senior citizen on a fixed budget!! read more
