I called about pricing and was happy with what I heard so I asked if they could fit me in same day. The answer was "yes," so I got in my car and drove 20 minutes to the shop. When I parked my car, some guy immediately said "You can't park there!! You have to park over here!!" and he pointed to a crowded area full of cars. Without a word, I got in my car and moved to the area he told me. Once I parked, I proceeded to get out of my car. Again, without even a 'hello,' the guy says "you can't park there, you need to pull up more." Now granted, I saw that they were packing cars in but I didn't want to be completely blocked in without speaking to someone first (I had questions). Before I could even explain that to the guy, he just started giving me an attitude telling me that all these other cars are before me and I need to be patient, etc. etc. I literally didn't even have a chance to tell him why I was there or what I wanted. My car needed to have the State Inspection completed. I made several calls in the area to find the best rate. It turns out Evan's Gulf charges significantly less for State Inspection and has a 10% off Yelp coupon. The location was also convenient. Tom, the Service Manager, was very friendly and helpful. And after my car passed inspection, he answered all the questions I had about upcoming maintenance and when I should have my tires replaced. It's also great that they work on diesels since I have a VW TDI. It can be unpleasant having your car inspected, but my experience at Evan's Gulf was very positive. If you don't want to be scammed, do NOT come to this auto shop. I had my car come in for a battery check up and they gave me some bullcrap result (shown left) saying that my battery is dead and need a new one. I called triple AAA right after to have a technician replace the battery but he told me the battery was in good health (shown right). I was charged $32 from Evan's for a service that was inaccurately, if ever, performed. Don't waste your money and time here, go elsewhere. This place can't be trusted. read more

I'm giving 1 star because you have to rate it somehow. We brought our car in for inspection. Thought we'd try a new place w fairly good ratings on Yelp. Well - Two hours after dropping it off - we received a call saying we needed new breaks and rotors on our back tires to the tune of $400+ or we wouldn't pass inspection. Mind you our breaks and rotors and tires are brand new, less than 4 months old, all of it. We declined the generous offer to screw us for the low low price of $400+ and picked our car up to take it somewhere else. Drove about 30 minutes to a trusted garage who inspected it in under an hour and besides a new inspection sticker all we needed was a new pair of wind shield wiper blades because they were torn. How can someone be so dishonest? Never again going to Evan's. read more

I noticed that one of my tires was mysteriously flat when I went out to my car the night before. After getting the donut put on, I went to Evans Gulf for a new tire. They asked if I knew what happened (which I did not) and said they'll first see if they can fix the tire. If not, then what kind of tire did I need. To this I replied 'um, one to match the other ones??'. So they knew they had a clueless, potential sucker on their hands but they were honest anyway. It turns out that my wheel was rusty and had cut into the tire. They were able to sand down the rust, coat it (or whatever), fix the tire and put it right back on...for a grand total of only $25! I know nothing about cars but that seems pretty fair/cheap to me and I didn't have to drop $100 or more for a new tire. Now the reason for giving 4/5 stars: I had to keep calling them to see when it would be done. When I dropped it off, the guy said he'd call me back in a half hour. After an hour & a half of no call, I called them to ask what the status of my car was. I was then told that they'd call me in a few minutes. After yet another hour & a half with no call I finally just called and said 'can I come in and pick up my car at noon?'. They said yes and it was ready at noon when I got there. read more

A month or so over a year later and I'm back here. My alternator died. Again. The one that Evan's put in(not their fault). Ok.....its over a year, I'm ready for a fight. They are going to say I need all new parts and I have to pay for them. Nope. I get my car towed here and they inform me that Im over the warranty period, but wont charge me for the new part (A $350 savings). That's awesome. Yet again, I don't feel ripped off. Well, thats not 100% true. They did charge me $15x2 for wiper blades I didnt ask for....but I needed new ones anyway. KInda steep though. I'll continue going here. read more

I always feel bad giving out bad reviews but this is necessary. I went there to get my car inspected. The person at the front was very nice. When he came back to give me my inspection results he told me I failed because I needed front brakes, rotors, low beam light and wipers. They can fix it so I pass but it would cost me $460. I was not getting that done there so I left and when to a mechanic to put everything on. Come to find out, I didn't even need rotors. It's very sad that someone tries so hard to take advantage of a female thinking they have a victim. AVOID THIS PLACE THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY!!!!! read more

False open hours! The open hours are not 7am - 10pm as advertise, that's only for the gas station. I tried to go there (inspection plus oil change) at 7 to leave my car before going to work and everything was closed. The gas station guy arrive at 7:20 and told me I had to wait until 8. Well... No sorry, got to go. Came back on Saturday, only the oil change was open and they try to charge me $75 when my Ford dealer does it for $39 with the same oil. Does not sound good to me. I love this place and have been coming here for years and years with my car troubles and maintenance issues. I have to say, the thing I love the most is that I never feel like I am getting ripped off. And that, as a young woman with a car, is a rarity in this world. The staff is super friendly and their hours are good. The only reason I take off a star is that in the past there have been communicational issues. Certain times when I brought my car in, they failed to call and tell me about additional work that would be needed and only told me when I came to get the car after work, which then necessitated another trip on another day. Also a few times I asked for the car to be ready after work and it wasn't and I had to wait. Otherwise, they are great and I suggest you go there. read more

Not only am I know to the city, but I'm also new to living on my own. So, when my tire blew out over the weekend, I was stressed. I got it to Evan's as soon as I could, but that was a few days later after driving around on my little donut to and from work. At first, they said there would be no way to get me in by the time they closed. But, I think Tom (head honcho) saw my look of desperation and decided to throw me a bone. Tom ended up calling down the tire I needed and got me out of there before closing time at 5:00. Wow, don't try to get gas. If in DESPERATE need, buy $2 worth to get you to next nearest station. The gas pumps in slow motion- questionable if anything actually comes out. I took my car here for state inspection. I was told that it was going to take about an hour, but they will call me when it was ready. I left my car and 3 hours later I called the place because did not hear from them. They said it would take another hour. I went to pick up my car and was able to use my yelp coupon 75$ worth and I paid 50$. Still I paid 73$ difference for the state inspection, oil change and bulb? replacement, not sure which one. Good solid mechanic. Evans has Saturday hours which is a plus! Tom is my mechanic and is straightforward, communicative, and does a good job. I got my inspections done here, and also my oil & filter change, and later a replacement of an engine vacuum hose. Awesome. I had gone into Evans around 6pm for a tire patch. Unfortunately the tire guys just left, but the guy at the counter offered to pump up my tire before I left. I went to Pep Boys down the street (only because they were open later). Needless to say after a debacle they tried to tell me I needed a new tire. The next morning I went back to Evans at 8pm. No appointment needed for inspection and gets done same day, with a discount provided without request. Only thing I'd note is to make sure you specify whether or not you are open to using mismatched/non-manufacturer replacement parts, as the default will be to order the matching part, which is more costly. read more
