We had a big lunch so we decided to just get one "The Bird" sandwich to take home and share it for supper. Big mistake. Sadness ensued! Came to High River because I'm a Heartland fan--even knowing Maggie's Diner is a facade. Hadn't heard about Evelyn's but I'm glad we stopped in. Hands-down best sandwich I've had in a long time. Had the Who Knew? with the daily special soup (mushroom barley). Only disappointment was my drink. Ordered a sangria lemonade but they were out, so asked for raspberry lemonade instead. It tasted more cherry and was heavy on the syrup. Daughter had the Close Cut with a Rick's salad for the side (small upcharge). The salad alone was hearty enough for a meal. Sandwich was good, but she said next time she'd order something she couldn't make at home. Decor is fun--and probably would have more meaning for us if we had seen The Last of Us. Do not miss the beet salad... I repeat, do not miss the beet salad. Because the main component of my lunch entrée was vegetable, I treated myself to a slice of local Saskatoon, berry pie à la mode (just to keep things in balance). I felt tears welling up as I took the last bite! It took all of my willpower not to lick the plate. I had the opportunity to meet the chef...a delightful woman who brings Evelyn's patrons a lot of joy through her skills in the kitchen. Flipping through the channels on the TV in the hotel, I landed on a special (not a commercial) mentioning this place. The sandwiches looked great, the desserts looked great, the whole place looked great. I found it here on Yelp and bookmarked it. The restaurant is a good 50 km south of Calgary, but it's worth it. Especially if you have nothing else to do and don't mind a drive through scenic flat-lands on a highway. Yep, it's a 50's diner. Very small menu of breakfast and lunch items, plus counters loaded in yummy desserts. I had the chicken sandwich, just like it was shown on TV. Fresh chunked up roasted chicken (not that deli-sliced nonsense) with cranberry sauce on a hearty grain bread and sliced in half with a pickle. Excellent. I also had the girls pop a piece of that blackberry pie in a to go box, which I enjoyed later. Yummy, but it would have been better if I'd stayed and had it with a scoop of ice cream. I wanted to go somewhere a bit different. My friend had been here and said that they had the best ice cream. She had the ham sandwich, which looked great and was a hearty serving. I had the quiche with the beet salad. Our meals arrived in absolute record time, we were both shocked. So delicious. So pleased with my choice. We had to try the ice cream too however there was a huge selection of other sweets too, to entice. It didn't disappoint. Despite the staff being very young, they were all very professional, efficient and it was clear that they were there to work. Kudos to their good service. Stopped in purely based on reviews and wasn't disappointed. They're doing a lot of construction outside on the street in front of the diner, but it was still packed when we arrived around noon on a Saturday. We drooled over the pastry display case and managed to snag a booth by the front. Service is super friendly and our server was patient and helpful with her suggestions. We ordered the lemon meringue pie and the strawberry rhubarb pie with ice cream. I also ordered the iced lychee green tea. The pies were super fresh and delicious. Loved the crusts!! The lemon meringue was a mile high and the perfect balance of sweet and tart. The strawberry rhubarb was full of both and had a crisp top. Both were definite hits. The tea was also deeeelish - the lychee added a wonderful sweetness and it was so refreshing. Highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area. We ordered the turkey club, and a ham and cheese sandwich. There are no sides, but the sandwiches are a good size and we wanted room for ice cream afterwards. My friend had the ham and cheese, and is traditionally a white bread guy, but he didn't specify he wanted white, so he received multi grain. If the bread was of lesser quality he probably would have had a fit, but he said he thoroughly enjoyed it, best he has ever had! The turkey club was simple and tasty, served on a croissant (which always makes me happy). Now the ice cream, the whole reason we came...amazing! Folks after looking for a real fifties type diner that woulkd pass on Diners Drive in's and Dives i am proud to announce i have found it. From the time you walk through the door and get greated by the amazing staff who actually have smiles on their faces and are really happy to be there to the very clean and well maintained dining area with the real fifties feel. Homemade baking from pies to the toast. I ordered the bacon and eggs and got a platter full of food for 6.95 after sitting and going through the menu i noticed that nothing was more than 6.95 i was shocked that the prices were so low and the food and restaruant were so good if you really want to take a trip back in time even price wise you have to check this little place out its well worth the trip were going again with the family this time im going to try the homemade stew. read more

Top two for lunch in High River. The specials are always good but nothing beats the Hutterite chicken sandwich. Get it with a bowl of the daily soup for a perfect portion. And for dessert, homemade ice cream (any flavor is good). It doesn't get any better. Come early if you want a booth as it tends to get quite busy during the lunch rush (12:00-1:00) but service is quick even when its busy. All the food is fresh and a lot of ingredients are local. Highly recommend trying here. If you don't have time for a full meal just get an ice cream, you wont be disappointed. read more

Drove to High River to try Evelyn's Memory Lane Café due to previous raves about this diner. First time we came, it was not open but it is now open for business. The diner has new owners since the last year or so is what I heard. We ordered banana and peanut butter shake. It was 2 scoops of the flavored ice cream and mixed with milk. It was so runny with mostly milk, we had to send it back to be redone. It did not taste like a shake - not at all thick like it should have been. The peanut butter was actually the flavored chips in the ice cream and did not make the shake taste like peanut butter. They all sank to the bottom of the glass. No real bananas added either - just the scooped ice cream flavor. The chicken club was quite pricey at over $7.00 for a crescent bun with deli chicken slices, tomato, bacon and some yellow cheese. I came with a quarter slice of pickle. For that price , it did not seem worth the value for the food. The pot roast special came in a black bowl that had a big chip in the side.... I think damaged or broken bowls should not be served food in it. I wasn't even sure if it got chipped and may have fallen into my food ! It doesn't make the diner look good to use broken bowls. The pot roast meat was very tender and tasty but I was expecting it to come served like roast beef on a plate with knife and fork. It came like a stew with mashed potatoes and some carrots and celery. It was almost like a stew and served with a spoon. But with one big chunk of meat, you have to chop it with a spoon to eat - and I had to ask for a fork. First time I ever got pot roast to eat with big spoon. The front door was propped open and flies came in and I had to wave them away from my food. Cakes should be stored in the glass case due to the flies coming into the diner. The waitresses were happy to remake our shake and ensure that we had prompt service. read more
