The volunteers are friendly and trying to be helpful but lack the knowledge or experience to make things happen with any efficiency. This was coupled with long lines. The wait to check in was 45 minutes. The wait for a locker was 10 the wait for a hose to spray off the mud was 20+. These events are expensive and it is clear that Spartan race means to squeeze every dime out of you. $15-$30 for lockers, $150 for entry, $30 for photos and the list goes on. The obstacles are fine, the only redeeming quality is the other racers who all seem to be there to get through this together. People were happy to help each other and that was cool to see.

I did the Spartan Race for the first time with a large group of friends and had a blast!…read more The Spartan Race for the Seattle area takes place in Monroe, near the high school at a spacious equestrian field in Snohomish County. It definitely was the perfect landscape for obstacles and trail running. For the most part, the event was well organized and they had plenty of volunteers throughout the entire race, to help navigate and cheer you on! Even as you arrive, you're directed to where to park and there are signs everywhere for checking in, restrooms, food and drinks, etc. The space for the race was ideal since it had everything you need for a spartan race, like trails through the woods, uneven grounds, hills and steep inclines, and yes, they even bulldozed some holes for the muddy pits that's part of the three obstacles where you get dirty. There are three different races that occur during the weekend the race takes place: Beast, a 21k with 30 obstacles, Super, a 10k with 25 courses or the Spring, a 5k with 20 obstacles. It was definitely a fun and exhilarating experience that I'll never forget! It was also cool to see how many people visited the Seattle area, just for this race that takes place every year, all over the world. Everyone was very friendly and loved the encouragement from fellow spartans and the volunteers and staff, cheering you on. I can't believe I'll say this, but yeah, I'd do it again.

The Klahaya Swim & Tennis Club grounds were well maintained and a nice community space when I…read morecompeted in the Seattle Summer Swim League 1999 to 2010 for Innis Arden. The parking lot is medium size and during swim meets the church across the street was kind and allowed overflow parking, so the walk was not too far. During my younger years, the blocks were a bit like a very thick and durable plastic table and the backstroke hand rungs were sharp (not piercing) on my fingers. The top of the blocks could get slick and were on the flatter side. Some of the Klahaya swimmers expressed glee about how their pool had the "cleanest" blocks because they were flat. There was some debate on whether using slightly tilted and rough-surfaced blocks constituted cheating in a race. It was commonly agreed upon wedge technology for starting blocks counted as cheating. I was thankful for the flatter blocks because it helped me realize how much a rough surface on a block and a slight tilt could change the depth of a dive off a block and overall dive form. The pool was well designed for waiting for races both on the benches and behind the blocks, watching the swimmers from the bleachers or the side/end of the lanes, and a large grassy area next to the tennis courts provided space to spread out a blanket and/or chairs. Concessions were easy to find, though the line could flow into the walking path if long. Locker rooms were easy to access from the pool deck.

Membership is limited and the wait list to join takes a bit but those in the know, enjoy this little private community club. Starch-boy, our son, has enjoyed attending several birthday parties here. The staff is well versed in safety instruction and they have requirements of the swimmers to allow them into the deep ends of the pool. The facility is always clean, plenty of parking and the staff are always helpful. Only knock against it is the pool is only open seasonally.

You had to buy tickets through a special link in order to get a hat representing your house and mascot on it. I was happy to see that parking was free!! I am not used to that perk. Coming in the gate was very simple. I added the tickets to my apple wallet for easy access and scanning. Everyone seemed to be outside by the concourse either in line for food or hanging out in a family style grass area with activities for kids. I don't like that if you want a burger and fries, you have to stand in two lines. The burgers come with plain lays chips and same for the hotdogs but separate lines. The fries are a different line and they also had chicken tenders. We stayed in one line and both got double cheeseburgers. The frog shop is a good size and had plenty of items go choose from. I browsed but didn't buy anything. My husband went back and got a zip up sweatshirt since it got cold after the sun wasn't hitting us. I apparently purchased General Admission and that consists of metal bleachers. They also get cold. We chose the 3rd base side which was cool because that is where the home team did their warm up. Once the game started, I felt it was a little difficult to pay attention. The seats had a good view but I would prefer closer to home plate and being a part of the action. I was excited to have a nice mountain view too but they were hiding a bit. We will definitely go back and try different areas to see what we like best!

Inside, too, enjoy the gym and the lap pool, a lobby space to gather and converse or take a moment away to read, check Yelp!, and more. Staff usually man the desk at the entry and can answer questions, point you in the right direction and provide information about the goings-on at the community center.

First off, it's indoors, which means swimming all year round. It's huge, has diving boards, a few bleachers to sit, and is freaking cold. Sign up early for lessons and classes. Always call ahead to check for closures due to cleaning and maintenance. These people really need to heat their pool better. Especially for all the kids swimming in it. We've done the baby class here and it's terrible for children and infants to have to brave cold water. I've seen plenty of people having to leave early because their infant can't handle the cold. I know they've been informed of the problem, but they don't seem to care. And honestly, it is a tad cold even for me and I'm a god damn Polar Bear Plunge member! I love to cold water swim but not when I'm in a pool. The locker rooms are decent. Clean. Enough benches, only one changing table though. Plenty of hooks, lockers, showers and toilets. Even some crazy-spiny-dry-your-wet-stuff thing. Strangely enough, Seattle sure has some body issues. It's just silly to see grown women nervously and dangerously stumbling under a towel so no one can see their "goodies" while trying to carol their children. Maybe I've just been in the medical world too long or I just have no shame. Either way, prepare to get looked at like a leper if you get naked without reservation. The parking is ample, though you get plenty of Lake City spill off and slack-jawed yokel teens running around. So watch your belongings and lock the doors. Vandalism and break-ins are normal. And it is so close to the beautiful Meadowbrook Pond. A great excuse to explore that area.

This is my first time joining UW Dawg Dash. And, I am not a UW alumni. But, I thought it's nice to…read moreget the spirits going and help out UW students in their scholarship. It's meaningful. However, my friend who ran with me was a UW alumni. That's another reason to support. This isn't really a big event. But, everyone was running/walking hard. I am a dog lover. I think the best part of this run is that you can bring your dogs. Unfortunately, my boys don't really run. In addition, there were a few sponsors handing out goodies. My favorite would be the green tea chopsticks and Peak's Frozen Custard, Pumpkin flavor. When it comes to the route and course, this run isn't my favorite. Towards to the end, the course looped around campus several times. It got crowded, a bit confusing, and complicated for 10K. I think the 5K may have been a better route since it's shorter.

The Dawg Dash is a 5K and 10K run sponsored by the University of Washington to raise money for the…read morealumni association. The biggest draw for me is this is a dog friendly event. There aren't many in Seattle unfortunately even though this is a dog friendly city. My pooch, Dugan, and I have done it two years in a row. This is a fairly well organized event. This year I had to stand in line longer to get my race bib than I had last year but that tends to happen. The run starts in Husky Stadium. Before the gun goes off to start the race the Star Spangled Banner is played. You run on the track then run out of the stadium. Soon you are in the UW campus, on the Burke Gilman Trail then back into the stadium for the finish. While running through campus the alumni band is playing festive tunes to keep you motivated. The course is mostly flat with a few small inclines here and there. This is a great run for beginners. Don't worry. LIttle Bobby won't be left out. For the little guys there is a free one mile Pup run which commences once all the runners are out of the stadium. While I enjoy this run my only complaint is there are no waves. The runners, walkers, and joggers all start at the same time. Due to my frequent trips to the bathroom caused by nerves Dugan and I were stuck in the back. When the gun went off we were ready to go at full speed but were stopped in our tracks as we encountered the walkers. For at least half a mile there is no room to move. It is crowded not only with humans but with dogs. Be aware of the length of your dog's leash and you'll be just fine. I recommend the Dawg Dash highly because I can run with my dog. Also, the course is easy as pie. The alumni band is a great touch as well.

Aside from an amazing view of Puget Sound, this park has many things for kids to do. There is…read moreplenty of open grass and space. There is a neighborhood garden. There are covered basketball hoops. There is a playground with plenty of things to climb on for the kids. There is a smaller playground set for tiny kids. There are plenty of swings. Maybe the only dog fall is that they don't have a restroom with running water and a toilet, but they do have a porta potty.

I LOVE that much of the grounds of the original school still remain. It evens looks like the same…read morerail on the ramp between the lower playground area and upper field area as when I attended Sunset Elementary School here from 1997 to 2004. The paint is slowly chipping away. In 2004 I graduated from Sunset Elementary School, a little while after I graduated it was announced the school would close due to budget cuts. The City of Shoreline tore the school down and made Sunset School Park in its place to preserve the land in the case that a new school needs to be built here in the future. Even if a new school is built here it will not be identical to the one that preceded it. Each building and each structure has an identity of its own. I have come here a few times since the school was torn down to walk around and reminisce about where things used to be located and where different activities took place (such as the Walk-a-thon and soccer practice on the field above the area with the playground). The playground has been upgraded since I attended the school, though it was also upgraded when I attended the school. There are two large field areas (one on the upper level and one on the lower level), a sheltered play area, and a large community garden in addition to the playground and a tiny patch of wooded play area. While attending elementary school I was playing tag with some classmates and said "bite me" to one of the boys who decided to take the idiom literally instead of figuratively as I meant it and bit me without my consent... ahhh the physical assaults of elementary school. Still love the trees though, trees this big and old are an extreme rarity at urban schools these days. Means a lot to me that they have chosen to keep them around. The park can get a bit busy, something to keep in mind if you are looking for a quiet secluded place to walk, play, or relax. Beautiful park and location.

The tall trees in and around the fields and play area provide a sense of distancing from the street(s) running past and help muffle the noise from vehicles passing by. Gates/entrances to the fields were clearly labeled and rules efficiently communicated. A great place to bring a ball and practice drills on one's own or in a group when the field(s) are open to the public for general usage. Also a nice place to sit in the car and do some nature watching if the squirrels and birds are out.
