Visiting the kid who's going to school around here? We stayed at the only hotel in town. This is small town a really small town with Eureka about a 10 minute drive away The kid is in school, therefore needs to focus on classes and gets to hang out with us when he get a chance. We didn't have a car at first, so we are limited to Arcata. This was a good thing since we wanted to check out the town that Big said the Pickens are slim but good. There are a few bars in town. This is the only one being a traditional bar. I would even go as far as saying dive bar if it were in San Diego, but here I think it's just a regular bar. Payment is cash only. There's a long bar that has settled over the years and sloped towards the Bartender. There are a few tables along the opposite wall, which we did not sit at. There may have been something out back because I saw people going that way, but I didn't go check it out. We came on three separate occasions. Everybody here was incredibly friendly as they have been in town. It seems like all the locals also come here we saw the cook from another restaurant having a drink at the end of his shift. Don't expect anything fancy here it's a straight bar with a good selection of spirits. I generally stick to a vodka soda or Keile soda when it was something like this by Jenifer behind the bar said she's happy to take direction and made me the most perfect margarita. Another person next to me even ordered the same thing. So I'm in town if you want a place to grab a drink that's straightforward and friendly. This is the place. read more

We came up to Arcata for Memorial Day weekend. Walked around the town square and stumbled upon this cool little dive bar. There is a pool table and a music box for one dollar songs. Had a terrific time here! My wife and I love to check out fun dive bars when we travel and Everett's is a winner. Went in on a Monday around noon so it wasn't crowded, which afforded us the opportunity to chat with April, the bartender and a local resident who apparently frequents Everett's. They made us both feel very welcome and didn't treat us as "outsiders" because we are not locals. Important to know this is cash only establishment. First time my husband and I have actually gone in and sat at the bar was a couple days ago which was a holiday. Quiet time to go which was perfect for us since we were just keeping the day low key. Robert, the bartender that day, was very friendly, professional and prompt on keeping us happy with our drinks. It looks like a place often frequented by regulars who are happy to stop in for a drink then move on to their business. That's a good sign, I think. They come back because they get what they need/want. I would certainly call this a dive bar but really just because it's tired inside. The floor is falling apart and the antlers on the deer on the wall could use a dusting since they were connected with dusty webs and the collectible bottles up on the shelf could be cleaned up. But the ladies room was clean and overall, we really just wanted an affordable glass of vodka, which is what we got. Would I go again? I would, for sure, especially on a quiet time of day. We had stopped in to meet up with friends a couple weeks ago, on our way home, and even on a weekend at 11:30 pm it looked like a friendly place to hang out. read more

Everett's is a chill dive bar nestled in Arcata's Plaza. If you like dive bars, this a sweet little spot to check out, and I've been told it can get incredibly crowded during the semester. I rate this 4 stars for being a no-nonsense dive. Food/drinks (4/5) - There's a pretty strong selection of beers here, as well as your basic wells and cocktails. The vodka cranberry I ordered was quite heavy on the vodka, which didn't taste great, but I appreciated the help in getting even drunker. Service (5/5) - Betty has been a bartender here for literal ages, and she's a true gem. She's a sweetheart and will take great care of you. Ambiance (4/5) - Our group went during the "off season," so the bar was rather empty. However, it was as dark as any self-respecting dive, and the giant moose head over one of the booths that you have to kiss for various reasons is a quaint novelty. Value (?/5) - Went here as part of a bachelor party, so I can't speak as to the prices. However, I imagine they're pretty reasonable. read more

The best thing about this place is April the bartender. She is efficient, friendly and funny. The bar is decent but I can't say I can recommend the place unless April is bartending. The other bartenders are a little bit slow on the draw and not very friendly. Linda, another bartender, is often too busy talking to her friends to bother serving customers IF there are any in the bar when she is there. I will only go there if April is working because I can't get good service from anyone else. Decent dive bar. Went on Friday March 8 @ 6pm. It wasn't busy at all. We had a beer and were asked if we wanted another. We weren't ready as we still had a quarter of our beer left. When we were ready we put money on the counter next to our empty glasses. The bartender walked by us. A new group of kids came in and the bartender greeted them and followed them to ask what they wanted to drink. This is a HUGE turn off for me when a bartender prioritize newcomers, who haven't even stopped walking in, first and leave the people already at the bar with empty glasses. I was denied service to this bar as soon a I walked into the door. I had just gotten off the bus into town and was waiting for a friend to come pick me up. I figured I'd check out a local dive while I waited. I walked down the street looking for an empty place. There were literally 5 (I counted) people in the bar. I walked in and was told I wasn't allowed in with my backpack. I explained that in my pocket was a wad of cash and 2 credit cards. I was told to leave. So I went down to the alibi and racked up a bar tab there. I understand the rules because of the environment where a ton if street kids are hanging out, but i was clearly intending on spending my money there. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Pre-judging and being very un-Humboldt like.... or maybe not? Maybe they just had "smoked" themselves paranoid. I am a fit bearded 6'2" 235 so I might look like that "somebody" who was looking for them for past digressions. Anyway nothing ever happened and I made my way into Everett's Club happy that there were some normal looking folk in there whose outfit didn't comply with "I just slept in the bushes sheik" . This bar is awesome, from the deer heads to the lights and the indifferent bartender. There were some "weeded out" locals but they appeared to be tolerated and after 3 Pabst and Jameson chasers I was feeling a bit less on edge. When you go straight whiskey and beer , tip the man and wait for the bartender to ask if you need another, it goes a long way in their eyes. It's a simple procedure that proves you got drinking skills and aren't there to fuck around. Don't talk too much and only ask about the places history if they seem eager to answer. Everett's is hands down my favorite bar in Arcata! As for the unhelpful man, that would be the owner. Locals in their 30's have stories about how they would walk in and not get served. It was strictly and logger bar. Some of the kids never gave up trying. Eventually they'd win him over. He doesn't work at the bar so much anymore. His daughter has taken over day to day operation of the establishment. Donna (my fave) and Betty (close runner up) are transplants from Toby & Jacks. Totally T & J's loss. They do an awesome spread for St. Patrick's Day. Thirsty Thursdays get your cheap microbrew on and a pint glass to boot! I always prefer Everett's when HSU is on holiday (summer and winter break). It's just the locals and a few straggler college kids. As for ambiance, this is classic dive all the way! I mean seriously, who doesn't love being in a room full of game heads! read more

Everett's is crying out to be used as a set in a David Lynch film. As one of the four main bars on the Arcata Plaza, Everett's stands alone in its unusual atmosphere and bar staff. The walls are adorned with dead animal head "trophies" every bit as stiff as the cocktails you'll consume. The combination of my two Maker's Mark and ginger-ales (was there ginger-ale in there really?) the dim lighting, the funky jukebox and my oh my - the extraordinarily self-expressed bartendress - made for an experience that was truly theatrical. I will spare the blog-like details but suffice to say more than one person's breath was held at a climactic moment. Just go there and drink for yourself. It doesn't hurt to be really, really into absurdity and moments you couldn't possibly script out better than life itself. For real. read more

I don't like slutty chicks, I don't like loud hip-hop music, I don't like bartenders who look annoyed when I order a drink, I don't like paying too much for a drink with too little liquor in it. But I like Everett's. It's dark and yes, there are animal heads all over the walls. It's awesome. The bartenders are quick-witted, snarky older ladies who know how to make a drink. I wouldn't quite call them friendly, but they have character. The people watching is priceless -- it's a more local, older crowd than some of the crappier bars on the plaza. I think they have the best White Russian in Arcata. Come for a good time. A lot of biology types and old people during the day hang there but all are welcome, doesn't have a particular scene. Attending HSU in the mid 90's, this was the bar that was off limits to students. When I recently returned to Arcata after a 12-year haitus, I had getting a drink at Everett's at the top of the list. Yay ... it was everything I expected! A variety of taxidermied wildlife on the wall (including a jackalope), old booths with saggy seats, older ladies mixing the drinks and a pool table. As a local one of the best bars in the area. As long as you aren't one of the wanky HSU students and you tip well you get good service. Been going here for only a year and already the bouncer's know me and my group by name and even when the bar is 4 deep all the way around, the bartenders pick us out the second we walk in and ask us what we want. I recommend Everetts to anyone who goes to the bar to get a good strong drink. Cozy atmosphere, big smoking deck, and you always meet someone interesting here. To the guy that gave one star, obviously you belong at the Sidelines and shouldn't have gone into a real bar. To anyone wanting to stop by: Good prices, good service, nice atmosphere.
