I forgot to review last year, but his is one of our favorite bakeries! Their sunbuns are delicious - not too sweet and have a nice blend of crisp/softness. It's like a crispy cinnamon bun! We got 6 of those, four for the family and then our neighbors. We then got croissants, which were crispier this time, which is the way i like it. I also got a few cookies to try them - oatmeal and chocolate chip. The chocolate was buttery, a bit crispy for my liking - I like soft cookies, but they were still good. I may have spent too much, but this time they also had cakes! We got the strawberry cheesecake mousse, tiramasu, and the chocolate mousse cookie or something like that. Tiramisu was the best but I have to say nothing tops the sun buns - baked goods! We'll have to stop by again! read more

This place has fully come into its own. Thank God and thank goodness there's a great bakery with really fine coffee and other goodies right here in humble Chestertown. I've been a semi-regular customer since they opened, and they've never disappointed. Now, the place has matured into a really fine establishment The pastry chef is now offering cakes and tarts truly worthy of a Parisian bakery or restaurant... I'm not being facetious, it's wonderful stuff. I brought home there luscious, buttery, decadent German chocolate cakes for birthdays and special events, and not one reveler has been disappointed, ever. One of my go-to everyday favorites is the stun-bun with pecans (a version without nuts is also offered), washed down with Japanese-style cold brew. I'm not a morning person, so they are very often sold out when I get there, so word to the wise: if you want to get dibs on the good stuff, go early... If you are in Chestertown, you must stop here. I love this bakery/coffee shop. Always have amazing pastries, from their Sun Buns (cinnamon sugar twisted dough buns), to their multitude of croissants (plain, chocolate, apple almond, etc.) to their simple but light banana bread. They also have more savory bakery items like their cheddar bacon scones. They also make pre-made sandwiches like a turkey pastrami on a French baguette with lots of amazing fixings. Great for a quick lunch. And their coffee is great too, I've fallen in love with their lavender lattes, which isn't on the menu. It's not too floral-y or soapy tasting like most lavender food products. And of course they have beautiful milk foam designs. What's not to love? The shop itself is great, with large communal tables, we have met different people every time and everyone who lives there is so welcoming. Wow, this is one of the BEST bakeries I have been too. I love everything about it, the pastries, the coffee the hand lettered signs. The berry croissant was amazing. Flaky, melt in your mouth perfection. The cream on top was the perfect compliment to the flaky and the berry flavor was fantastic. I wish I lived here so I could eat at this bakery every day. This was the best pain au chocolat I have had since my trip to France (where I started my obsession with this melt in your mouth goodness.) The quality at Against the Grain is amazing. Everything is baked fresh. The bread looks perfect, but I only tried the muffins and croissants. Against the Grain is a bakery is Chestertown with a European/country feel. The room is clean and bright (with nice touches like fresh flowers) and the coffee is very good. The prices are not cheap, but it reflects the quality of the baked goods. It was $2.50 for a croissant or muffin and $3.50 for the more specialized baked goods (like pain au chocolat.) The location is about a half a block down from the main intersection of town. So, it is easy to miss if you are just strolling around. However, I encourage anyone to seek out Against The Grain. This great spot made my morning feel like a European vacation. read more

Visited the first time yesterday. Everything was delicious and the staff was very friendly. The "everything cream cheese stuffed pastry" was to die for! The coffee was smooth and the iced tea was yummy. We brought home a sunbun, orange cranberry scone & macaroons for our three boys. All were big hits. Highly recommend this spot! read more

I don't know how many superlatives can fit into this review space, but I can say I would use all of them! This honestly may be one of the top five bakeries on the East Coast. I have never been to one that is better, anyway. You know, everybody says there is no bread in the US as good as in France? Well this place disproves that statement. Its croissants are as good as any I have had in France (and I have traveled extensively there - over several decades). The prices are a bit on the high side, especially for this rural community, but the product more than makes up for it. Going there may be a bit of a splurge for me, but it's still a treat. Frankly, a trip to this place from Baltimore, Washington, or Philadelphia is worth it. read more

Excellent bakery located on the High Street. Nothing too exotic but nice selection of bread, muffins, etc. all baked in the store. Good place for a coffee break or to just relax. Locally owned. We knew the baker when he first started to sell at the weekly farmers market. read more

Went here on a Saturday morning at 8:30 before the farmer's market (also a great place to get fresh local produce) and it was fantastic. I got a savory scone which was made with onion, goat cheese, and walnuts. It was perfect, decadent, and very VERY dense. I couldn't even finish the whole thing and was full until lunch time! My friend ate the everything bagel with cream cheese and enjoyed it very much. 2 coffees + scone + bagel with cream cheese = $9. The service is VERY friendly and moderately quick. The sandwiches looked so yummy, but I was too full to even think about buying one. The girl was making them and putting them out as we came in. All the pastries looked great too. Coffee is not like Starbucks. You take a cup next to the coffee dispenser and fill it up as you please & all the milk, sugar, honey etc is right next to it. I can't wait to come back! Overall the Evergrain Bread Co. is not too shabby for a quick bite to eat, but the only downside was that the coffee was lukewarm but I think it was because I added a lot of half and half... oops :-P read more

Cutest bread shop in the heart of Chestertown. We booked a wedding venue nearby and wanted to explore the town, so we stopped in for lunch. The salesgirls were so sweet and chatted us up a bit about where we were from. The sandwiches we ordered were really fresh and tasty and the amazing nutella latte was just what I needed. There is free wi-fi, a clean bathroom and enough seating for a busy afternoon. I will definitely be back on my next visit to Chestertown. read more

Seriously amazing bakery and coffee shop! I was in Chestertown for the National Music Festival for two weeks and came here every morning before rehearsal. The coffee is really top notch- being from Ceremony Coffee Roasters. And the organic milk they use in lattes adds that special something. The Nutella latte is an extra special treat. I could go on and on for days about the incredible everknots as well! The people dining and the employees are always very friendly as well, and the shop usually has great music playing. This place sucks. The baked goods are pretty good but the people who work there are morons. Three times in the last week they have either told me to come back at a later time when certain products would be available (turned out to be 30 minutes after they closed) or have placed an order the day before (which they make you ore pay for) just to drive 25 minutes again to get there and have them tell me they misplaced my order sheet until after bread was made. Didn't call me to let me know they screwed up again. Third wasted trip in a week because the people don't know their own work schedule information or because they don't know how to take orders. They will take your credit card info and phone number but wait till you get there to let you know they screwed up. Not worth the aggravation read more

I was in Chesterton for my friend's birthday party and she took me to this bakery. I was disappointed that they didn't serve sandwiches when we were there but they had filled croissants, scones and an almond bar that were all to die for. Before I left the next day, I had to go back in there and get more scones, some brioche and a tart. Very, very good! read more

Based on everyone else's stars we clearly are an anomaly. We were advised by the locals to go to two other places but picked her anyway so its' out own fault. Sandwiches are pre-made and when they are gone they are gone. All they had left was the turkey sandwich which had more salt than turkey. Couldn't eat it. The other sandwiches in our part were not great either. Apparently the blackberry cabernet sorbet was pretty good, but I didn't try it. It was obvious that this place should close at noon and just do what they apparently do best, coffee and breakfast pastries. Too bad. Seems they cater to locals not tourists. read more
