An absolute gem. Chestertown has a bakery that would be a find in downtown Baltimore. The baked goods are impeccably crafted, and attractively displayed. If you are in the mood for something sweet, It is difficult to choose among the various muffins and croissant variations. The Sun Bun is, as other reviews suggest, a can't miss--a light and flaky croissant infused with sugar and spice. I also indulged in a pumpkin muffin, which ideally could have been more moist... but, yum. My girlfriend had ham and gruyere on a buttered baguette--and we could have been in Paris again. The espresso drinks could have been hotter but were well made. I would have preferred my artfully swirled latte' staring up at me from real stoneware--certainly there must be local potters anxious to showcase their work--rather than generic paper cuppage. But with the high molded ceilings and the cheerful, helpful young staff, this place is as close to perfect as you can expect. read more

Against the Grain is crazy good! Their located about a block down from the main intersection of town (like Lana F. said) and fountain park! Every one who works there always has a smile on their face and are ALWAYS happy to help you! The inside is always clean and orderly and it's a great place to sit down with friends and enjoy one of the many great things on their menu! On First Friday (a little gathering the first friday of every month were the shops stay open a little later, and all parents sit outside of the legendary Play It Again Sam's while their kids meet up with friends after school and hang out!) If you're looking for a quick sandwich on the go...this is the place! High quality ingredients and the bread is just sooooo delicious! I wish the sandwiches were a bit bigger and wish they would offer a meal deal. They also have to go salads but I was unable to try those. I was born in France, and I agree: the pain au chocolat really are excellent by French standards. We took home a pumpkin seed sourdough loaf to make bruschetta with, but it was so tasty that we ate almost the whole loaf before we started cooking- so we will have to save the tomatoes for another day! read more

We were looking forward to seeing your new location in Easton on our way to Oxford, MD yesterday. However, we were sadly disappointed after our experience. I guess we set the bar to high after we visited your Chestertown store last fall. Your Easton store is a poor 2nd location. The lack of goods and quality was abundantly obvious. I asked the counter if they were baked on site and she said that baked goods were delivered daily from Chestertown. And by daily, I assumed Monday - Friday since Saturday's selections were stale and lacked taste. I thought the outdoor space was nice touch since we brought our dog. But when I asked for water for him, she offered me a large plastic or styrofoam cup that he couldn't use. I asked if she had a dog bowl or any bowl to use (this location had been open for three months???) She begrudging said here and then said "and don't make this a habit". I joked don't worry we live in DC and thought we never will come back here again. Too bad your new location negated our experience in Chestertown. read more

Like WOW!! Star Baker for sure. Their Rosemary Bread Loaf was perfection in flavor and texture - so very delicious for sandwiches I made at home. Baguettes used to be great. They had the light almost crispy crust you'd expect. However now the crust is tough and chewy, still better than Wonder Bread but a real disappointment. The rest of the extensive offering is good to great including excellent coffee. read more

When in town, you MUST go here. Unless you don't like good coffee and tea and uncommonly good baked goods. If you are into paleo, I suppose this will not be good. But it's the only place where we can depend on getting a great French breakfast, le petit dejounee, without a long flight and a passport. What's good? everything. read more

I just read Yelp's regulations for comments and I can't tell you what an incredibly wonderful bakery ATG is because my daughter, Abbey, works there. I'm not permitted to tell you that the sunbun is indescribable...literally. Shawn C tried, but until you've had your first bite, don't read anymore reviews about the sunbun. If you have a sunbun at the store, get one to go or you will wish you had. It will not make it home, so maybe you should get two. Everything Doug makes is exceptional and EXTRAordinary, but the sunbun is his own creation and you've never tried anything like it. I've only ever heard about the chocolate milk/hot chocolate. It requires taking a second mortgage, but I understand that it is literally Belgian chocolate mixed with creamy milk. Yikes! The ratings police are at my door, but one more thing...Quiche Lorraine! read more

Just a wonderful place! The chef loves bread and it shows. I haven't tried everything but what my wife and I have had is superlative. She likes the sun-buns ( a local favorite apparently! - it was recommended to us at the Farmer's market) and I adore the chocolate pain (the cookies are also very good). The restaurant smells wonderful with the aroma of good coffee wafting throughout. My only complaint is that the door handle at the entrance is very low - at 6'4 it can be hard for me to reach the knob. Altogether though it is a credit to Chestertown! Against the grain is charming, and there's a big wooden table that creates a nice friendly vibe. That said, I thought the baked goods were meh. I had a scone that just okay, and I tried some bread that was very weird. I'd recommend a sunbun, which is loaded with enough cinnamon-sugar and butter to make anything good. read more

The real deal no matter what you pick. You can tell they bake their scones the British way with cream, not oil. The Vollkorn brot tasted exactly like the bread I ate in Germany, and the croissants are all butter. A charming, convivial place with great coffee. Love! read more

Well, in the past I would have given it 5 stars, but in the past few months things have changed. The baguettes, in particular, no longer have the distinctive French taste and texture they did before. The crust has lost its crunch and is very chewy and tough. The cookies have also changed, and not for the better, IMO. I do not go as often. Sniff sniff.....What happened?? read more

Everything here is excellent! The lattes are to die for and the pastries are delicious. I stopped in a few weeks ago when I was driving through town. Loved it so much I drove an hour back just for another treat today. The Nutella latte is a real treat- almost like a hot cocoa. read more
