This place has the best food in town. A PCT hiker's dream. People are down to earth. Love it.

Because this establishment encompasses two quite different parts, a coffee shop and a bar, I think it's fair to address them separately. *** Evergreen Cafe The fare here is just about standard for mountain town coffee shop, served in a homey atmosphere. Wouldn't turn it down if somebody else was paying, but wouldn't go out of my way for it either. Recommend the chili. * Raccoon Saloon Probably better to leave this one to the locals. The beer is cold and the bartenders are friendly, but this tends towards the sad-sack end of the dive bar spectrum. Docked major points for the smelly old guys getting handsy with the girls. read more

Just Don't!!!! Rude, rude, rude!!! Walked out, and thank goodness we did.. the service sucks, and I later heard from others that had been there before that the food is awful. Very rude older lady was cleaning an empty table, told us to sign in because there was a wait...there was nobody waiting! The worst part is, she said we had to wait outside in 35 degree weather with our 6 year old son!!!! Obviously we didn't stay!!! Soooo rude and inconsiderate!! We were in Wrightwood for a couple of nights, we ate the Mexican restaurant up the street, excellent service.. Also ate at the Grizzly Cafe, also great service and awesome food!!! read more

Visited Evergreen in Wrightwood yesterday after our 9 mile hike in the Mountain. Our waitress her personality was friendly she makes you feel like you're at home. I would go back. Just to experience her great personality .. Excellent food highly recommend if you're in Wrightwood stop at evergreen. read more

I have not been in a restaurant with a worse service than this cafe yet. I felt something was off the second we stepped in when the guy in front told us to ask my child to NOT sit until we are seated! The restaurant was half full so plenty of chairs where available specifically the ones next to the entrance where my 7 year old felt like sitting. Any how, I felt I should give them the benefit of the doubt and asked my son to stay with us until we were seated! Same guy showed up after 5 minutes and asked if we were ready. I asked for a hot chocolate and an item from appetizer menu. He stared at me rudely and said that he can not take my "food" order since he is there to take only drink orders. I said well fine. He brought the drinks after another 5 minutes and disappeared again. Apparently he was looking for someone to take our "food" order. Since he could not find anybody, he came back to us and said disappointedly that he himself need to take the orders. He again stared at me and told me that he knew what I wanted for appetizer. I gave him same exact look and nodded. He all of a sudden took the spoon from my friend's coffee creamer bowl and put it on a napkin with a look basically saying he should know where to not put the spoon! We could not help but laugh at this angry racist guy who was abviously not enjoying his job! read more

Had breakfest, potatos were cold, eggs under cooked and running, toast buttered on half of the bread. Had to wait extra long between coffee refills. The cafe was setup cute but there food and help needs a lot to desired. Maybe they will read and understand that they are not the only restaurant in the neighborhood read more

Just returned home from a trip to Wrightwood we took just for having breakfast at the Evergreen Cafe. Over the years (not often enough to be regulars but often enough), we've been there many times and always loved the place, service and food. My husband just came off chemo and radiation treatment and this was a treat for him. There were 4 of us. We walked in and waited to get on the list. There were tables available and open seats at the bar. Immediately, they shooed us out, saying there was no waiting in the restaurant. I stayed inside to get our name on the list - had to wait because people were paying. While I was waiting, my husband came back in because he was freezing. He was obviously shaking. Regardless, THEY DID NOT LET HIM WAIT INSIDE. He could have sat at the bar with a cup of tea, but they did not afford him that kindness. We will never go there again, and I will discourage everyone I know from going there. We ended up at the GRIZZLY CAFE, just down the main road. GREAT FOOD, BIGGER PLACE, INSIDE WAITING AREA and A LOVELY GIFT SHOP. read more

My son and I went here after a hike this past weekend. We both loved it! he is a pancake connoisseur and they were big, golden and fluffy with warm syrup. (The bacon and eggs were good too but it's kinda hard to mess those up). We also shared a side or corned beef hash -- it seemed like it was canned, but they had prepared it perfectly with crispy edges and it was really good! My turkey melt and onion rings? where do I begin? they were awesome! As an onion ring lover - these hit the mark. Seemed like they were homemaed and the breading was crunchy and not that thick breading people sometimes use...the 4th of July decor was fun and cute. A lady at a neighboring table ordered the chicken fried steak and it looked so good coupled with her bloody mary. The steak was huge and the gravy looked perfect. Maybe I'll get that next time.... If I had to make one critique it would be that the owner or manager - whom I heard staff refer to as Twila -- was a bit cranky. Not to customers but to her staff. It is a bit awkward watching staff be berated. And from what we saw and experienced the staff were doing a great job - our waiter was a young guy whose name I do not remember, but he was great --Twila didn't treat him very nicely. If you happen to be passing through Wrightwood, the Evergreen Cafe is highly recommended. By comparison to the competition in town, this is quite easily one of the best places you can go to, the prices are pretty reasonable and the portions of the meals are huge. The average meal will costs $8 to $12 with only a few costing around $15+ The decor and feel of the place is nice, finely and colorfully decorated, it feels warm and comforting. The seating outside would be nice in the warmer weather [not at night in the fall and winter seasons here] but the seating inside is fine, very comfortable seats and usually not too crowded. The service here is sort of hit or miss, you can get served pretty fast, other times it almost seems like the waiters just forget about you. For some reason on one occassion when ordering our main courses, my family and I were served reasonably fast. However when it came to simply ordering some ice cream we were waiting way longer than it took for our meals to be prepared. But if waiting doesn't bug you, the food more than makes up for it anyways. The quality and quantity of the meals are great. The last time I came I tried the meat loaf which came with mashed potatos and garlic toast [and wow, the meat loaf turned out to be a huge slab that took up half the plate pretty much. Aside from not having that many mashed potatos served with the meal, it was very delicious. Flavorful meat loaf, everything I've had off the menu has been pretty good. And at least for the most part the service you do get is friendly [on a few occassions, one of the guys who were working there, seemed like he just wanted to get a different job, but the girl working was amazing and helpful] Just would not recommend getting the brownies...it tastes exactly like the really cheap kind you make yourself from the box [just way more expensive] $2.99 for a pretty small piece. One complaint some people may have, is that it doesn't serve a bunch of different things. They don't have the most varied menu, mostly just a few soups, breakfast items like eggs, waffles, and pancakes [breakfast is served all day btw] they also have sandwiches and burgers. The homefries are good but not very flavorful, recommendation...IF you are getting the fried potatoes ASK if the cook can possibly flavor them while cooking [otherwise they are just plain potatoes] I didn't ask, and I ended up using a lot of ketchup for the potatoes. Getting back to the menu offerings though, there isn't a whole lot more than typyical breakfast items [omelettes, scrambled, etc.] sandwiches, soup, chicken and beef options which are served with sides of various things such as soup, fries, country fried gravy, and vegetables. Unfortunately there's no rice and very little noodle selection, they have spighetti, it's cheap...unless you want the meat sauce...the meat spighetti is one of the most expensive things but sounds like it would be very tasty. The desserts [aside from the brownies] have looked very good. For about $4.99 you can get a HUGE slice of cake...really it IS huge. It's pretty much half a cake, multiple layers. The ice cream is good too, and not too expensive...$1 a scoop. It's not the perfect place, but you shouldn't be disappointed. Bottom line, despite some flaws, the food tastes great comes in large portions and priced fair. read more

My neighbor suggested that the Thursday Taco day was really good and being that our wives were out shopping, lets go get some tacos. Well, when we get there, we ordered a couple of beers and asked the bartender to let the waitress know that we were ready to order, twice. After the waitress walked right passed us, as if we weren't even there at least a half dozen times times, we left. I told the bartender that we will be going somewhere else to eat, thanks for the beer. I have eaten at the adjoining Evergreen Cafe many, many times and have never experienced this level of customer no-service, ever. My boyfriend, his son, and I went here for breakfast last weekend. This place is totally Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives material! I had 2 eggs, ordered over medium well with home fries (add peppers and onions) and biscuits and gravy, with coffee. He had 3 eggs, bacon, home fries and biscuits and gravy. Little Man had a pancake. My eggs were good, but waaaaay runny. Over easy in my book, not nearly fully cooked like I wanted. The home fries were yummy. The biscuits and gravy were DELICIOUS! Gravy was good, with a few chunks of sausage thrown in and the biscuits were fresh and tender. Coffee was pretty good too, as was the bacon...nice and crispy, not too fatty. The pancake his son had was HUGE and also very yummy. Tender and a little sweet. I would totally have given this place 5 stars if it weren't for a very awkward transaction between me and the waitress when it came time to pay. I wanted to sneakily pay for breakfast while my boyfriend and his son were in the bathroom, and I had my debit card in my back pocket so I went up to the register to pay. The younger waitress looked at the other waitress, who seemed to be the superior, and asked "Do you know these people?" She said no, and I said "I'm sorry I don't have my ID on me. I wanted to pay for breakfast without him knowing, but if that's a problem, he has his ID/credit card and can just pay." The older waitress told the younger to just let me pay. The younger very hestitatingly did so. When my boyfriend came out, she asked to see his ID...with no explanation, and then when she saw that his last name did not match mine (duh, i didn't say he was my HUSBAND), she looked at me like I was a criminal! it was the strangest thing I've experienced at a restaurant. They let us leave without saying anything else, but I will feel really uncomfortable if we go back again and that waitress is there. The atmosphere of this little cafe is awesome, the hanging underpants was an interesting decor to the holiday season of Valentines. Maybe I find the rather unusual odd but definitely made it an intriguing breakfast. As for the food, well pretty inexpensive and reasonable being a touristy town. I was quite content with the entrees, flat jacks, eggs, and beacon hit the spot. The portion sizes are pretty big, enough to last you till dinner. It is rare that I do not finish a meal, normally due to horrible entree. In this case, it was exception, the portion sizes was too much to handle. The service here is great, not once did I have to ask for a refill on my drink. In fact I think I drank too many shots of coffee that I burnt out by late mid day with 2 hrs of sleep. If you had to choose a spot for a hearty meal, highly suggest this cafe. Overall best place in town for good eats. read more

This was our first experience and it is a fun eclectic little place. And I do mean LITTLE. There were 8 of us and we had to wait outside because there are so few tables. But it was October and the entire restaurant was decorated for Halloween. The food is very good and there is a LOT of it. The prices are very reasonable. The only negative comment I really have is that the waitress really was rude. I can see why there are so many comments here that indicate that. She could definitely use a little bit of sensitivity training. ;) If you are looking for a small town feel, great food and reasonable prices and can tolerate what could be construed as sarcasm or banter, this is the place for you! read more

Big portions. That's what you'll get here. And it's awesome. If you're looking for a chicken fried steak you could take to the beach and surf on, then this place is your jam. The food was solid diner food. Expect nothing more, nothing less. The gravy in the biscuits'n gravy was pretty killer though. I debated asking if they had one of those jumbo straws so I could slurp up my leftover grave. The staff was friendly and fairly attentive despite it being crazy packed. The older gal who served us was tough, yet sweet. Classic breakfast diner material. The vibe was fast, homestyle breakfast joint. They had the place decked out in winter decor, which was hard to tell if it was a year round thing or just winter--either way pretty legit and you'll appreciate the effort when walking in. Be prepared to wait for a table on a weekend morning. But it's worth it. My wife and I would go back if we find ourselves back in Wrightwood. read more

Great local color, extreme wintertime kitschiness, small-mountain-town feel. The staff aren't there to give the greatest service, but they feel like part of the place, and that's kind of nice. There's a fan that blows a mighty wind from the far side of the room and all the way out the front door, drying out eyeballs, chilling hot food, and offering a bit of indoor weather if the weather outside weren't enough. But no matter what the weather, if you need to wait for a seat, there's no waiting inside. It ain't aloud. Fire Marshall. You gotta wait outdoors, where not even the slightest patio cover or overhangs exists to keep you dry. Now all of the above mentioned are fine by me and really add to the place. What I didn't like was the food. Not good at all. Doesn't even taste like it's trying to be decent. I did not, however, try everything on the menu, but just a couple breakfast items: an omelette and corned beef hash to be exact. Both were edible, but just not good in any other way than that. I saw some pancakes at another table that looked good, though. Damn, should have tried the pancakes. Ah, hell, should have just gone somewhere else. read more

About five years ago, I drove up the hill to meet a friend who lives in Wrightwood. I remembered that our burgers were really good. Today we were diverted to Wrightwood because there was an accident at the top of Cajon Pass. Wrightwood seemed to be a better alternative than driving back down toward San Bernardino. We arrived at about 1:30 and I was surprised at the crowd inside, but it seemed like every restaurant in town was busy. Our wait was about 10 minutes, and getting some fresh mountain air on a nice day made the time pass quickly. Our server was great and so was the food. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich, which has turkey breast, ham and Swiss cheese. It was the best that I've had. Try the jalapeno jelly that comes with it, rather than the syrup. My wife had the Mountain Man breakfast and had to decline the biscuit and gravy and settle for only the biscuit and some butter and honey. We both left stuffed and happy. read more
