The equipment portion of the store is very well stocked and has pretty much anything a beekeeper could need (or want) at reasonable prices. The wax/honey/product portion of the store always has unique one-of-a kind items as well as the 'typical' items that folks regularly buy (i.e. honey, beeswax, candles, etc.). Though the store is usually always busy, Mark, Thien and other staff are never too busy to answer questions from customers. They also respond (amazingly quickly - far better than I think I would be) to emails with questions from beekeepers. They have queens (unmarked early on and marked later) available for re-queening each year, which is really great because re-queening is a regular part of beekeeping and being able to obtain them locally is great. Aside from being helpful at the store and in answering questions, everyone at Gretchen's Bee Ranch are just good people - people you'd want to be friends with even if you weren't customers. If you've never stopped buy, check this place out. If you are a beekeeper anywhere near Seguin, this is the place to come for all of your apiary needs. If you just want to learn more about bees, there is probably a class (either a limited in-person one, an on-line one or a no-limit in-person one) for you!

So on Sunday we headed out and found that the place was turned into a bed & breakfast. We drove by and noticed Urban Herbal. What we didn't know was that the owner (William Varney) sold the herb farm back in 2007 but had some land adjacent to it and opened up Urban Herbal in 2010. I know that mid-February is not the time to visit if you want to see the garden in it's full glory, however the gift shop & labyrinth makes it worth the trip. We parked in the private lot and headed towards the garden where we were warmly greeted by William. He escorted us to his gift shop and I was so amazed at the variety of products he created to stock the shelves in this little store. From infused oils, herbal soaps, bath vinegars, bath salts/scrubs & lotions for the body, pet care to herbs for the grill, vinegars & seasonings for the palate, the offerings were mind boggling. William's knowledge was impressive to say the least and we were very happy that we got to spend some time talking with him personally, picking his brain. I ended up purchasing some incense, detoxifying body oil (juniper, geranium & grapefruit), lavendar/mint home fragrance, eucalyptus home fragrance, Herbs de Povence, lavendar/champagne vinegar & balsamic coffee/fig vinegar. After our purchases, William escorted us to the back garden. It was really wonderful to let my mind wander & meditate while I walked the labyrinth. William mentioned that he will begin workshops this spring. I am fuzzy on the details but he did mention that they will be posted on his website soon. I am truly happy that I was able to meet William. He is such a delight and has a wonderful, positive energy. I left Urban Herbal feeling refreshed & content. Definitely worth a return trip!

I spent well over an hour looking through websites claiming to be for "the best florist in San Antonio" until I came across No. 9. The moment their home page loaded with their gorgeously gothic arrangement, I KNEW this was the florist for me. They don't have set arrangements to show on the site, so I called and spoke to Angel. She explained that everything is custom-made and their prior work can be seen on Instagram. Based on the vibe I got from Instagram and their website, I had no doubt that I'd be ordering from No. 9. Angel and I quickly discussed my budget, timing, the flowers she had available, and the color palette, including potential use of local foliage and flowers. The arrangement, delivered just this morning, blew me away. Even though I knew No. 9 would come through with something unconventional, Angel worked her magic and produced a heart stopper. If, like me, you can't stand carnations and baby's breath and prefer elegance, character, and heart in your flowers, don't pass up the chance to experience No. 9's arrangements.
