If you have a sweet tooth (or a spicy one), Alamo Candy Co. is basically the mothership. Walking in…read moreis a total sensory overload in the best way possible--rows of technicolor treats, piñatas hanging from the ceiling, and that iconic "Batman" guarding the aisles. The Layout & Vibe It is a massive warehouse-style shop filled with every kind of candy imaginable. They have a huge selection of American classics and imported Mexican favorites, but their homemade line is where they really shine. * The "Batman" Rule: You can't miss the life-sized Batman statue--just a heads-up that there's a "Do Not Touch" sign on him! * Organization: The shelves are packed with everything from bulk lollipops and "Glow Pops" to stacks of de la Rosa Mazapán. What to Grab * The Classics: You have to get the de la Rosa--it's a staple for a reason. * The "San Antonio" Specials: They are famous for their Chamoy pickles (look for the Big Tex Dill Pickle in Chamoy), Picositas belts, and those spicy tamarindo chili balls. * Party Needs: Beyond the candy, they have a ton of party supplies and authentic piñatas if you're prepping for an event. Pro-Tips for Your Visit * Parking: They have a dedicated customer parking lot, so you don't have to stress about finding a spot on the street. * Timing: They are open Monday-Saturday (9:00 AM - 6:30 PM) and Sunday (10:00 AM - 4:00 PM). * The "Sugar Rush": Be prepared to leave with way more than you planned. It's hard to say no when everything is so well-priced and unique! Whether you're a local or just passing through, this is a San Antonio institution that you have to experience at least once. #AlamoCandy #SanAntonioEats #MexicanCandy

This shop sells fudge, truffles, candied apples, and - what I came for - ice cream! They had a lot of ice cream flavors to choose from, a least a couple dozen. The smiling young woman working behind the ice cream counter offered to give tastes, but I had already figured out which flavors I wanted. I chose two scoops in a cup, one of Cappucino Chip and the other Turtle Cheesecake. They have several tables to sit at, some along a hallway and more in a back room. I took a seat and was in awe of the huge scoops given. The Cappuccino Chip had a mild flavor (I prefer it stronger) but a fair number of tiny chocolate chips. The Turtle Cheesecake had an excellent cheesecake flavor with swirls of caramel, praline pecans, and caramel-filled mini turtles. I'm usually not fond of nuts in my ice cream but I actually enjoyed the pralines. In my humble opinion, there were too few turtles. But I still loved it. If you're in the mood for a cold, creamy treat while visiting the Alamo, you'll find this to be the perfect place to visit.

I had never heard of Sodamingo but I'm a fan now. I love our offerings of "make your own drink"…read moreplaces in town that specialize in coffee and tea. What a genius idea to do the same with soda and lemonade. I appreciate that they offer both regular and diet/sugar-free offerings of sodas and mix-ins. There is no end to the concoctions you can make. I had a Sprite Zero with sugar-free Coconut, Pineapple, and Cherry mix ins. It tasted just like a Pina Colada. My husband had the "Cowboy" which was Barq's Root Beer with caramel, marshmallow, and cream. Oh my! Sodamingo also carries some noshy foods. I couldn't resist trying their "famous" jalapeño popcorn. Holy cow, this was amazing. The popcorn was fresh with a slight kick but not real spicy. It also included slices of fried jalapeños that melt in your mouth. It was packaged in-house and comes with a twist tie so you can savor it overtime, but it's hard to not eat the whole bag. I'll continue to go back as much for that popcorn as the soda they're known for. The staff was friendly and helpful, ready to please their patrons. Everything was clean with bright, inviting decor. There seems to be two locations in town and I really hope they'll expand to the Helotes area. I think they'd have a great following there.

One of my friends in San Antonio passed away recently and I wanted to send a special arrangement…read morefor his service. When I say special, I mean none of your Teleflora style generic flower arrangements. I mean something artistic, elegant, and/or unusual. I spent well over an hour looking through websites claiming to be for "the best florist in San Antonio" until I came across No. 9. The moment their home page loaded with their gorgeously gothic arrangement, I KNEW this was the florist for me. They don't have set arrangements to show on the site, so I called and spoke to Angel. She explained that everything is custom-made and their prior work can be seen on Instagram. Based on the vibe I got from Instagram and their website, I had no doubt that I'd be ordering from No. 9. Angel and I quickly discussed my budget, timing, the flowers she had available, and the color palette, including potential use of local foliage and flowers. The arrangement, delivered just this morning, blew me away. Even though I knew No. 9 would come through with something unconventional, Angel worked her magic and produced a heart stopper. If, like me, you can't stand carnations and baby's breath and prefer elegance, character, and heart in your flowers, don't pass up the chance to experience No. 9's arrangements.
