We stopped by EVOO on a whim, just about 30 minutes before closing last night and ended up having a deliciously satisfying Italian meal. All vegan, and almost all gluten-free too! Our server Jacob was kind and helpful and the best part was, seemed to really enjoy his job. He took extra care to explain all meals to us and to make sure we would enjoy our selection. The menu is 80% vegan and yet it's nothing like a boring quinoa and kale bowl! We had the fried artichokes on almond purée with pickled celery and they reminded us of fish and chips. Also tried the home-baked flat bread - perfect! - the vegan and gluten-free puttanesca pasta and the Brussels sprouts. Highly recommend EVOO to anyone who is looking for a hearty Italian meal, especially (but not only!) if you prefer vegan and gluten-free food. read more

This humble spot in an odd location downtown St. John's had been on my radar for a couple years now. I had walked by numerous times and found it odd but respectable that it was always closed during the day and only opened at 5pm. When I went to enjoy a supper with my parents one holiday evening, the interior was decorated nicely and had really kind service. I ordered the Pork Milanese ($28) which was a battered pork loin with creamy gnocchi noodles and mushrooms on the side. The dish was incredibly filling, but it did keep me wanting to continue picking at each noodle after I was already full. The pork had a lemon on this side to give it some extra zest. My dish was good, but my mom ordered the Chicken Parmesan which honestly looked and tasted better than mine. I also attached a picture of it as well. This place didn't have too many entrees to choose from but the chicken was great, and the pork was good. They have many pizza options, but I am not the biggest fan of fancy pizza so I personally would not come here for that selection. From what I ate though, I'd give this place a solid four for a kind atmosphere and filling meal. read more

Had the pleasure of dining at Evoo during our one week visit to St. John's. We ordered the following dishes: 1. EVOO Arancini - This was my favourite dish. It was my first time eating arancini. Being a fan of risotto and deep-fried food, these tickled my taste buds and satisfied my tummy. 2. Calamari Fritti - Crunchy, fluffy and light - these had the perfect size and breading. However, the squid flavour was a bit bland compared to other calamari that we sampled. 3. Seafood Risotto - Very flavourful and with an abundant serving of seafood. 4. Lamb Shank Ossobucco - I love ossobucco and anything lamb-related so when this arrived, I was so excited. However, this dish was disappointingly tough. 5. Authentic Italian Gelato (Pistacchio and Hazelnut) - 6. Zeppoli - Interesting dessert that reminded me of a cross between churros and the Chinese donuts 7. Tiramisu - My favorite dessert of the bunch and it's true to how tiramisu should taste. Highly recommend getting this one. read more

Our first night in St. John's, we reserved at this restaurant for 6 people. From the outside and the inside, the restaurant look very nice. A bit dark inside I have to say. The server was very friendly and started us off with drinks. Most of the people liked theirs, then I stayed with the Quidi Vidi Fogtown on tap and it was very good. For starters my boyfriend and I shared meatballs which were cooked perfectly and were very tasty. I had the Lamb shank for my main dish. The veggies with it were on point, the lamb was cooked very well, but lacked some flavour. A little sauce or dressing could've been nice. My boyfriend had the chicken parmesan that he really liked. Other people at the table ordered pizza and liked it very much They have a full page menu for Vegan's as well which is rare and also looked good. Evoo In The Courtyard is a Mediterranean inspired restaurant located in the courtyard of the historic Murray Premises Hotel, where One11 Chophouse used to be at. The interior has a nice rustic ambiance. It feels like you are in a cottage with stone walls and wooden beams. APPETIZERS: 1. EVOO Arancini ($8) - crispy risotto croquette with ox tail, peas, wild mushroom and mozzarella, pomodoro sauce, Grana Padano This blew my mind! I was wondering why I never had arancini before when it's like the most DUH thing for me to love - deep fried and risotto. You get 3 big pieces for $8 which is good to share since it can be quite heavy. 2. Calamari Fritti ($12) - corn flour fried squid, tzatziki, lemon I'm a big fan of calamari so I can be a little picky. The squid itself didn't have the strong squid taste that I look for in calamari. What it lacked in the squid taste for me, it made up with the herbs and spices used in the calamari which still made it enjoyable. ENTREES: 1. Seafood Risotto ($24) - arborio rice, mussels, squid, cod, cold water shrimp, saffron tomato sauce Really enjoyed the risotto. It was just swimming in fresh and delicious seafood. One thing I wished though is they used cream sauce instead of tomato sauce. I think cream sauce compliments seafood better since the seafood flavour sticks to the cream. And also, I'm not a big fan of tomato! One great thing is the rice still had the seafood flavour in it. 2. Lamb Shank Ossobucco ($24) - creamy polenta, Sicilian peperonata, kale Unfortunately, this would've been an amazing dish had the lamb shank been fall-of-the-bone. The creamy polenta was really good and was a good mix with the lamb shank. DESSERTS: 1. Authentic Italian Gelato (One scoop $4) - made by Yolande Modica - Pistacchio and Hazelnut Unfortunately, I didn't find the gelato to be creamy for a gelato. It was quick to melt as well while we were taking photos when it wasn't even hot inside the restaurant. Both flavours we ordered do not have the strong nut flavour that it should have. It was actually quite sweet instead of nutty. 2. Zeppoli ($8) - Italian style donuts dusted with cinnamon suger served with nutella First time having Zeppoli. These Italian donuts were baked fresh - crunch on the outside, and moist and chewy on the inside. It went so well with the melted Nutella. 3. Tiramisu ($9) - layers of mascarpone cream with coffee & Frangelico soaked lady fingers I'm a big sucker for tiramisu. This was a delicious and refreshing tiramius! The only issue I find is the ratio of cream is way more than the lady fingers. read more

Boy-o-boy...occasionally yelp reviews are off the mark, especailly when there arent many of them. This place the stars hit the nail on the head! What a three start, lacklustre, mediocre reataurant. Wannabe Italian food, pork osso bucco without any marrow swimming in alfredo sauce. Strange choices to say the least. Thoroughly unimpressed by the food and wine selection. The young woman serving us did a great job with our large table. Every washroom trips was greeted to The Verve's 1997 single "Bittersweet Symphony" on repeat. Strage business there. read more

Underwhelmed. Ordered the EVOO Salad, Fried Brussel Sprouts, and Bruschetta. We sent the salad back as a number of leaves were dark and wilted. The menu indicated that the Bruschetta was served on a house made ciabatta crostini (which means "little toasts" in Italian), but in reality was more like a flat bread. The only positive was being seated at a table near the door so that we were able to make a hasty exit. read more

We were seated in the section that has a view of the kitchen and staff cooking. While eating our appetizer salads (which were average at best), my husband witnessed one of the kitchen staff take something out his mouth with his bare hand and put it down, then continue to prepare food without washing or sanitizing his hands. This totally turned us off our meals. We told our waitress what we witnessed. We said we would pay for our salads but not be staying for dinner due to what we saw. She apologized and brought our bill for the salads. We were very disappointed that the manager did not come to speak to us about this incident. We paid our $31 bill for the 2 salads and left but will not be back. read more

We had a really good experience here for dinner tonight. I enjoyed the chill intimate space. Yes it is dark, but not oppressively so. Our server was seriously nice and very efficient. We started with cocktails and pints. For apps we had the cashew cheese toast (the best one), baked brie, and marinated olives. I had the Moroccan beef alfredo for my main though I must confess I did have my apprehensions when choosing it. It was subtle yet flavourful, and the crispy chickpeas added a great texture. I ate every bite. Apparently the burger was very good, the fries, however, were meh. The stand out dish was definitely the three cheese pizza with chicken and arugula. When you see their pizza oven, you too will know they mean business. read more

Everything was quite nice about my experience at Evoo. The calamari and risotto balls were good and my spaghetti and meatballs were delicious. I can't wait until summer where I can enjoy some authentic Italian food, a rarity in St John's, in the courtyard. Checked out Evoo on Saturday for the first time and really enjoyed it. The ambiance is very warm and I like the dim lighting. I love walking into the courtyard. I had olives to start with oxtail and mushroom risotto. The portion size for the olives was large, the risotto at first didn't look like much but it hit the spot. They had many gluten free options including spaghetti and meatballs (which I'll definitely be trying next time). Overall great experience, would recommend! read more

Room is very dark with minimal natural lighting. For some reason the have two different menus one for inside and one for outside. Courtyard menu is basic to say ye least. Tried ordering off the 'inside menu' but was told not possible even though it's called Evoo in the courtyard and the kitchen is 15 ft away. Crazy. Service was good but the food was average to poor. Had to pay for for bread and the the Emma was $18 plus tax and a tip for a dry burger served with fries. Told the server that he was good but that the meal was overpriced. I was visiting St. John's for Christmas and checked out Evoo for lunch with some girlfriends. I am vegan and asked in advance that their pizza crust was egg and dairy-free. The waitress was terrible. She basically rolled her eyes when I told her I was vegan. The service was also very slow. On the upside. . . I had the fungi pizza without cheese and it was DELICIOUS. The chef did a great job adding some extra sauce. My salad that I started with was also very good. read more

The first time we checked out evoo it was good, nothing to rave about, but everyone enjoyed their meal even if the service was quite slow. We went again last week and it has greatly improved! The service was much faster, everything came perfectly timed, drinks were great, atmosphere was nice. There are not a whole lot of vegetarian or vegan options in St. John's but there are lots at evoo, and those options don't compromise on flavour or quality. The Beyond Meat veggie burger is INSANELY good. It is the best burger I've ever had, hands down - and I eat meat! Juicy, flavourful, the dressing was perfect. Great fries, and our appetizers and desserts were also great. Most improved player win for you, evoo! read more

I wish I could give this place a better review, because I really wanted to like it. We had something planned for later, so we made a reservation (for 6 people) for two hours before our next commitment. My wife and I were first to arrive. Nobody else in the restaurant. We were seated right under two speakers which were quite loud. I asked the server (who never did tell us his name) if if could be turned down a little. He said "maybe, but very little. We're trying to maintain a certain vibe here, you know." He then took our drink order, and came back with my wife's drink, completely forgetting mine. (Remember, we were the only people there at the time.) The rest of our party arrived and got drinks (although my son had to order his girlfriend's drink twice, because our server forgot it as well.) It then took our server 15 minutes to come over to tell us the specials. When he said he would give us a few minutes to think about it, we said no, we wanted to order right away. Didn't want to run the risk of another 15 minute wait. We all ordered pizza. 45 minutes later, our server told us that the pizzas were just going in the oven and would only be a few minutes. He was quite proud of how quickly they cooked, but said nothing about the 45 minute wait to cook them. Our food finally arrived, an hour and 35 minutes after we sat down. Of course, it had taken so long that my wife and I didn't have time for dessert. We had to leave our credit card with the kids and tell them to pay. We asked if they could order us desserts to go and bring them home to us later. When they asked, the server told them this couldn't be done. Oh, and I had to go back the next day because when my kids came home with the bill later, I noticed they had overcharged us by $60. Average food. Inexcusable wait time. Unapologetically terrible service, and an attitude. What a terrible experience. read more

The place has a really nice atmosphere, one of the few places in the Murray Premises that really suits the stone walls and stained wood. Drink prices are fairly good as well as meal prices. In terms of starters, I've had the caprese salad and the calamari, both of which I found were wonderfully flavourful and fresh. The duck confit is also an excellent meal, with the very vibrant ratatouille really giving a nice contrast to the gamy meat. The pappardelle is also a wonderful meal. The best Italian meal I have had in St. John's. read more
