    Lamb Shank
    Gary M.

Our first night in St. John's, we reserved at this restaurant for 6 people. From the outside and the inside, the restaurant look very nice. A bit dark inside I have to say. The server was very friendly and started us off with drinks. Most of the people liked theirs, then I stayed with the Quidi Vidi Fogtown on tap and it was very good. For starters my boyfriend and I shared meatballs which were cooked perfectly and were very tasty. I had the Lamb shank for my main dish. The veggies with it were on point, the lamb was cooked very well, but lacked some flavour. A little sauce or dressing could've been nice. My boyfriend had the chicken parmesan that he really liked. Other people at the table ordered pizza and liked it very much They have a full page menu for Vegan's as well which is rare and also looked good. Will need to come back in the summer to actually eat in the courtyard.

Evoo In The Courtyard is a Mediterranean inspired restaurant located in the courtyard of the historic Murray Premises Hotel, where One11 Chophouse used to be at. The interior has a nice rustic ambiance. It feels like you are in a cottage with stone walls and wooden beams. APPETIZERS: 1. EVOO Arancini ($8) - crispy risotto croquette with ox tail, peas, wild mushroom and mozzarella, pomodoro sauce, Grana Padano This blew my mind! I was wondering why I never had arancini before when it's like the most DUH thing for me to love - deep fried and risotto. You get 3 big pieces for $8 which is good to share since it can be quite heavy. 2. Calamari Fritti ($12) - corn flour fried squid, tzatziki, lemon I'm a big fan of calamari so I can be a little picky. The squid itself didn't have the strong squid taste that I look for in calamari. What it lacked in the squid taste for me, it made up with the herbs and spices used in the calamari which still made it enjoyable. ENTREES: 1. Seafood Risotto ($24) - arborio rice, mussels, squid, cod, cold water shrimp, saffron tomato sauce Really enjoyed the risotto. It was just swimming in fresh and delicious seafood. One thing I wished though is they used cream sauce instead of tomato sauce. I think cream sauce compliments seafood better since the seafood flavour sticks to the cream. And also, I'm not a big fan of tomato! One great thing is the rice still had the seafood flavour in it. 2. Lamb Shank Ossobucco ($24) - creamy polenta, Sicilian peperonata, kale Unfortunately, this would've been an amazing dish had the lamb shank been fall-of-the-bone. The creamy polenta was really good and was a good mix with the lamb shank. DESSERTS: 1. Authentic Italian Gelato (One scoop $4) - made by Yolande Modica - Pistacchio and Hazelnut Unfortunately, I didn't find the gelato to be creamy for a gelato. It was quick to melt as well while we were taking photos when it wasn't even hot inside the restaurant. Both flavours we ordered do not have the strong nut flavour that it should have. It was actually quite sweet instead of nutty. 2. Zeppoli ($8) - Italian style donuts dusted with cinnamon suger served with nutella First time having Zeppoli. These Italian donuts were baked fresh - crunch on the outside, and moist and chewy on the inside. It went so well with the melted Nutella. 3. Tiramisu ($9) - layers of mascarpone cream with coffee & Frangelico soaked lady fingers I'm a big sucker for tiramisu. This was a delicious and refreshing tiramius! The only issue I find is the ratio of cream is way more than the lady fingers.

The young hostess who seated us was the only pleasant employee we encountered. Unfortunately as soon as she sat us and went to get us coffee a server arrived to frustratedly inform us that there was an issue in the kitchen, and we needed to either order that second or leave. Completely understandable there can be issues, but it wasn't our fault we were seated so being curt wasn't necessary, she could've been kind and made her point too. I didn't even have an opportunity to open a menu, but luckily my husband found an egg plate lightening fast so I said I'd take the same. The only difference we'd requested was our eggs cooked two different ways, which was wrong when the food came...but of course no use bringing that to their attention under the circumstances and she wasn't interested anyway. From then on we saw only the hostess again (as she came to check on our coffees). Other than that, we heard the staff somewhere joking loudly or occasionally turning customers away at the door due to the kitchen issue, and a female server (?) start berating the hostess right across from our table. Even though our order wasn't right the food was decent and portions huge. The interior setup is unique, most tables incredibly private. Maybe if we'd come on a different morning we could've enjoyed a meal here, this just clearly wasn't the morning to stop in.

This is solely a review on the course restaurant "Nineteen (XIX) Restaurant"…read more I dined here for the first time this evening as was blown away. Appetizers: - Mixed Green salad with pecans, cranberries, goat cheese with a maple vinaigrette was fantastic. Very light and refreshing. - Sweet potato soup with maple creme frache. Came with two warm rolls as well. The soup has just a hint of sweetness from the maple creme frache that really gives it a distinctive taste. Would highly recommend. Mains: - Blackened Salmon - Chicken supreme in a red wine sauce Both came with a side of vegetables and breaded Newfoundland style Gnocchi. The Gnocchi was a highlight for me. This style of Gnocchi is basically just a small piece of 'savoury Newfoundland style dressing", the same type you'd have with Christmas dinner, but locked into a breaded coating. It's phenomenal. Both the chicken and salmon were cooked perfectly. The salmon's tartar sauce and the chicken's wine sauce were both top notch. Dessert: - Apple Pie with Streusel Topping - Chocolate Pot de Creme with raspberries Both fantastic desserts. The Pot de creme was a delicious and rich chocolate with a velvety texture that paired perfectly with the raspberries. The Apple pie was so visually impressive. A generous serving size and very moist. Would have liked the crust (on bottom) to be a little more firm for my liking, but other than that it was pretty well perfect. * Overall, I can't recommend this place enough. Fantastic work from the chef at Nineteen and we will be back again in the future.*
