There weren't many restaurants downtown open for breakfast that morning, so we walked further to Bagel Cafe. The young hostess who seated us was the only pleasant employee we encountered. Unfortunately as soon as she sat us and went to get us coffee a server arrived to frustratedly inform us that there was an issue in the kitchen, and we needed to either order that second or leave. Completely understandable there can be issues, but it wasn't our fault we were seated so being curt wasn't necessary, she could've been kind and made her point too. I didn't even have an opportunity to open a menu, but luckily my husband found an egg plate lightening fast so I said I'd take the same. The only difference we'd requested was our eggs cooked two different ways, which was wrong when the food came...but of course no use bringing that to their attention under the circumstances and she wasn't interested anyway. From then on we saw only the hostess again (as she came to check on our coffees). Other than that, we heard the staff somewhere joking loudly or occasionally turning customers away at the door due to the kitchen issue, and a female server (?) start berating the hostess right across from our table. Even though our order wasn't right the food was decent and portions huge. The interior setup is unique, most tables incredibly private. Maybe if we'd come on a different morning we could've enjoyed a meal here, this just clearly wasn't the morning to stop in. read more

Ok - the interior of this restaurant is really interesting with a lot of cool decor. Having said that, you don't really have the freedom to walk around and look at everything because it's very closed in. As for the food - - unless you really, really love bagels I just really didn't see the point. While the French onion soup was really good, I had ordered the Cordon Bleu chicken bagel sandwich. I expected thin slices of ham, but I got hunks of thickly sliced ham with a lot of fat. I could not eat it and ended up taking it back to my hotel and throwing it away. Still, if you want to just check out the inside, it is pretty cool. If I ever did go bad, I would just stick with the French onion soup. read more

I've been here many times and love the vibe - however, the prices are unbelievable. Today I had breakfast there - a simple meal with coffee ended up being close to $50 (tip included). UNBELIEVABLE. The coffee, which, yes, comes in a huge mug, was $5 - for a simple cup of coffee. The meal was most certainly not worth the price and I think this may be the last time I visit or recommend this place. We selected Bagel Cafe because we just finished a six hour flight to Newfoundland. This cafe was close to our AirBnB and it was the first place we found where the meals were not all starting at over $20. It's very nice inside. It's not loud but there is music. We got a very private booth. Service was a bit sketchy when the server couldn't answer a question about what kinds of lager beers they sell (no draft). Two of us ordered the Seafood Chowder for $13 something. It was fine but too thin to be a chowder. Maybe they do things differently here but to me chowder should be thick. It was the right size for what we wanted though. Another guest ordered a breakfast dish and it was huge. Perhaps on a different day I'll order something that will be more impressive. Stopped in for a late breakfast on our last day in town. It's a quirky, cramped little place. My chair stuck into the main through way as you entered the restaurant to the right, and each and every customer that entered either kicked my chair or bumped into my back. It is what it is. I decided to get the nuthouse burger because when will I ever have a chance to order a burger with peanut butter all over it. It was interesting, but it tasted how it sounds: heavy, dry and not very amazing. My wife had the Yorkshire Benedict and loved it. All said, not a bad place, just not a great experience. read more

This place has a great quirky atmosphere with friendly staff but their food is quite bad, and way below expectations because of the awards they've won - the food is also quite expensive for what you get. Overall this place was way below expectations, and I wouldn't recommend this place. We ordered the lobster caesar, this is the first time I've had a caesar, but my friend said it wasn't that good it's missing that kick that makes you go wow. It's cool that they have that lobster claw, but the lobster is either overcooked or it's not fresh because it was very bland and the texture was not right. These were $10 each. My friend and I ordered the Newfoundland eggs benedict and Traditional eggs benedict, respectively. These were $17 each, and the only thing good about this meal was the potatoes, they were perfectly crispy and delicious. The traditional eggs benedict came with bagel that was hard to cut into and ham / bacon that was too salty. The fishcake in the Newfoundland eggs benedict was soggy and too soft, it broke apart immediately when you try to pick it up. Also it doesn't feel like there is any fish, there is either really fish and just filler or the fish has completely melted because it came from frozen or was over cooked. read more

Very strange decor, slow food prep and a rude, entitled server led to a mediocre experience. Upon entry, we were directed upstairs. Twenty five minutes later the server came to take our order. I was looking for the courtesy "Sorry for the delay" type of opening. Instead I was told that we were the last to be seated. Missing the point that 25 minutes was too long to wait regardless of seating order, we went to the main floor dining area. There, we were greeted and served by a very nice server. Still the kitchen took another 25 minutes to prepare some soup,a side of fish cakes and a bagel BLT. The food was not award winning in any way and the bill came over $40. Not worth it. Too bad. I blame management for poor training, no oversight and genuine disregard for customers. Hope this helps. read more

We went here based on the reviews from Yelp. It was everything the reviews said. The food was great. The portions were huge and the staff were very friendly and fast. It was pretty expensive. Most of the offerings were around $17 I had the Newfoundland Eggs Benedict. This was better than average fish cakes topped with perfect poached eggs, smoked salmon, capers and hollandaise sauce. There was a mountain of perfect twice cooked home fries on the side. I had a cup of house coffee which was pretty good. ($17.99) My partner had the East Coast omelette which was a large plate full of scrambled eggs topped with house smoked ham, bacon and lots of cheese ($16.99) His daughter had yogurt and fresh strawberries ($6.99) with a bagel and cream cheese ($4.95). She helped out with the mountain of home fries and smoked ham and bacon. We left plenty of food on our plates. Splitting an entre would be a good idea. The restaurant was decorated with an eclectic mix of stuff. Pretty interesting to look at while waiting for food. The place was packed on a Wednesday morning with locals and tourists. The booth and tables were super small, but they have two levels with many options. The breakfast menu had a huge selection of options. We tried a hash and the touton breakfast sandwich. What's a group of guys to do when they're hungover in St. John's after a few solid nights of pre-wedding drinking? Well first of all you sleep in until 11am. But after you finally get yourself together and wash off the smell of alcohol and shame, you regroup and head to the Bagel Cafe. Conveniently located on Duckworth St, Bagel Cafe is centrally located and a hop skip and a step from the heart of downtown, but has easier parking than Water Street and the street as a whole has its own interesting offerings of restaurants and shops. When we all arrived we had a slight wait for tables since there were several of us, but it just gave us all the more time to (a) recover some of our wits before interacting with other members of society and (b) take in the very Newfieclectic decor of the restaurant. With wooden booths that lent a homey feel, to the nick nacks covering the walls and the various nooks and crannies of the place, it was a lot for the eyes to take in, but not in a garish way like say Jungle Jim's. We had a couple tables pushed together for us upstairs and were promptly seen to by a friendly and patient waitress. We got some drinks to rehydrate and/or caffeinate us while we perused their very large menu. The breakfast menu alone had sections for waffles, pancakes, big breakfasts, omelettes, quesadillas (...yeah, I know) and potato bakes, which are the equivalent of skillet meals on Smitty's menu. Extra kudos to BC for having this bad boy breakfast menu available all day! The words "all day breakfast" are like an angelic chorus' calorie-filled song to me, drawing me into their golden brown, deep fried gates. There's also a very noticeable Newfoundlander slant to the menu as well, which adds a nice flare to the menu beyond your typical breakfast fare. There are plenty of breakfast dishes with baked beans, bologna, Cheez Whiz (tm), various forms of fish, and something I'd never heard of before - toutons. As I would find out at another restaurant, these are lumps of fried dough, basically a doughnut without any glaze, filling, or hole in the middle. A couple other interesting side notes about the menu are that you can make any order of hashbrowns a poutine for $2.99 (breakfast poutine?!?! *Mind and heart explode*) and they have no shame in serving you a bottle of Aunt Jemima if you order pancakes or waffles. Real maple syrup? Pfffft. I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous that morning (or was it afternoon at this point?) so I stuck with the big breakfasts section of the menu and quickly decided upon "The Weekender" which comes with three eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns and toast. Once we all got our orders in, it seemed like we didn't have to wait too long given the size of our group and how busy the restaurant as a whole was. Respect. Wanting some rich, runny yolks on my eggs I had gotten them sunny side up and while they're cooked to what I would classify as medium, there's still plenty of delicious yolk for dipping my toast in. Little packets of Kraft jam will forever be ignored by me when I have the option of eggs to serve as my condiment instead. The sausage sticks out from the plate as it's readily apparent that it isn't your typical small breakfast sausage link, this thing is a full sized sausage; while it has a good flavour, it could use some more of whatever the magical combination of seasonings are in regular breakfast sausages. The bacon is crispy and bacon-tastic as ever, and I even lucked into a friend's bacon when he was too full to eat it. Yes, believe it or not, that apparently happens to people. Not me, but people. My only gripe about the meal, and this applies to nearly every restaurant that serves breakfast, a glass of OJ does not cost the same or more than a 2L carton does in the store. Cut it out. All in all, it was a very solid breakfast and hit the spot in the way that spot needed to be hit. If I'm back in town and looking for breakfast grub, you'll find me here exploring more of the menu. read more

The Bagel Café was my first restaurant visit in St. John's and instantly became a must-eat for all future trips. Tucked away on Duckworth, a bit calmer than busy Water Street, parking is usually easy to find not far from the big red awning. The inside is a beautiful mess. From sea netting to chandeliers made from tangled up microlights, it all comes together pretty nicely once you're set up in a little booth with its own roof as if you're having a nice dinner outside. All day breakfast is totally full of win with endless options of fresh baked bagel based meals. I go for the bagel benedict options with the bangin' hashbrowns but I've seen equally impressive sandwiches. And these are massive platters, ladies and gentlemen, so be ready to eat. After my first visit, an easy five stars. The second trip took it down a couple of notches though when our meals didn't hit the plate for almost a full hour after ordered. Maybe meal number three will bring things back up, but for now, I'm a fan who wishes the wait times were shorter. read more

Despite the daunting long lines, we were always seated promptly, although do expect slightly cramped quarters (and no A/C like most places in St John's). The portions, like the giant mugs of coffee, are massive and a reasonable price. For example, when you order the "side of fruit" you'll get the Noah's Arc of bowls, with 2 of everything. I ate from my fruit leftovers for 3 days. If you're available for breakfast during the week, you can get a heaping plate of eggs, hash browns, toast and 2 fresh crab claws for 12 dollars. Let me clarify... 12 measly dollars. Me and my mom where excited to go out for a nice lunch and decided to try bagel cafe. The decorations are interesting and I loved the environment BUT I cant say the same for our food. My mom ordered fish and chips and i ordered a bagel sandwich. The fish was very old with grey colouring, it was even disgusting to look at. My sandwich was presented nice but tasted terrible. Not one thing on the sandwich tasted good together and the chicken piece was so small and dry, probably half the size of the bagel they put it on. I probably ate half of my meal and my mom had to send her fish back. They even screwed up the water, it was so warm and had no ice... Not to mention, we had 6 different servers within the hour we where there. Don't waste your money here, you could get a better quality meal at McDonald's read more

Just hearing the name Bagel Cafe makes me drool. Buckets. Why? Two words... Newfoundland Benedict... Now imagine if you will dining in a little cafe with all kinds of nooks and crannies to hide yourself away with a dining companion over a cup of tea of coffee while staring up at the eclectic mix of decorations adorning the walls and ceilings. You name it, it is probably on display at The Bagel Cafe. It exudes an aura of hipster mixed with Bohemia and a dash of seafaring thrown in for a truly unique atmosphere. Service was attentive, friendly and willing to offer suggestions but delivery was sometimes a bit slow. I visited the cafe twice in a six day span while in St. John's all because of those two words above...Newfoundland Benedict... Some culinary genius decided to marry the best parts of eggs Benedict with the mouthwatering perfection of traditional Newfoundland codfish cakes and voila...the most amazing brunch offering I've ever encountered. Two codfish cakes topped with poached eggs (slightly runny please) that was then drizzled with impeccable hollandaise sauce and then topped with smoked salmon. PERFECTION. It was so good I ended up ordering it on my second visit which was necessary after the first time because I wanted to have it again. I'm still trying to find somewhere in Halifax that will offer this...hint, hint! This place is lined up most mornings, so I took it as a sign that busy meant good. We were able to get a booth and squeeze 6 of us in within 15 mins and put in our food orders (I got seafood chowder and a side of hashbrowns and my GF got french toast and a side of fruit). I might be mistaken, but when I hear "chowder", I think a creamy soup base. But here, it was a broth. And it was more heavy on the veggies than seafood, but tasty nonetheless. The hashbrowns were crispy pillows of potatoes and I was given a generous serving, so they eventually became table hashbrowns so everyone else could enjoy them too. Originally, my GF commented how ridiculous it was that they charged $8 for a side of fruit. But a hearty bowl filled with starfruit, melon, pineapple and a whole plum came out and we thoroughly enjoyed it considering most places just serve cut up apples/oranges or those processed fruit cups (mmmm glucose juice). So, does busy mean good? Not necessarily. I think busy in St.John's just means you only have a handful of places to go to, so you make your rounds. read more

Myself and my boyfriend went to grab a quick breakfast. We went inside with 3 other people and waited for at least 2 minutes for a hostess to greet us. When she did, she accused all of us of cutting the line, telling us to wait outside. There was no indication of a line. She did not warmly greet us, or kindly share what the process was.
