Took us two tries to be able to dine on the rail outside. If you have Fido in tow, be sure to arrive as close to opening as possible. We got the last two seats! Best steak I've ever had in my life. In fact the whole meal was probably the best overall. I got the 8oz filet with asparagus and mashed potatoes with gravy. Everything was perfectly seasoned and the asparagus was *just* al dente. Absolutely delicious. This place is magical. I almost want to say nothing so you can just experience how special it is without any preconception... But I'll say this is a top restaurant experience, make a reservation in advance, and try anything on their delicious menu and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the river and forest, the beautiful wood in the lodge, the friendly staffing. You can make it an elegant night out on white table cloths or come casual. There is outdoor bar seating that is pet friendly but arrive early to get a seat. For indoor seating definitely make a reservation- currently they're open only Thursday-Sunday and in fall-winter opening earlier at 4p to catch the earlier sunset. Edited to say: ate here for a second time this evening. Loved it again. But would say the bread in the filet tip appetizer was really soggy, maybe this is how it is supposed to be but also could not taste the filet well. But still GORGEOUS view. Friendly service. To start off with, the waitress was good. The meal its self was ruined because of the obnoxious loud party they sat by us. We could not sit and have a conversation with our meal because of them. So we had to box our food and get out. Nowhere does it say "sports bar " on the sign or web page, it says steakhouse. I can't say enough good things about our experience. We were lucky enough to have Ewings on the Kern as our venue for our reunion last night. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent especially when considering they were serving over 100 people (since some venues' food can get overcooked when serving that many people). The mashed potatoes were flavorful and the main meat dishes were juicy and delicious. Everything was served in a timely manner. Gorgeous views of the Kern River and plenty of room to move around with sectioned areas that made sense. Two bar areas for service. Called in advance to book a reservation but was notified they were all booked for the day for reservations but was told they reserve a few tables for walk ins. The young kid then asked for my party size and name and told me that if I come in around 6pm there might be a slight opening where he can put me in so I wouldn't have to wait too long. Walked in a bit late around 6:20 and was told by another gentleman wait would be over an hour because we had no reservations as that was being said the young kid came and overheard and asked if I was Tony the person who had called and I said yes. He told me already had reserved a table for me and let me know it would be about 30 minutes. Small gestures like this make you want to come back to a place. First time here, boy have we been missing out! We called for same day reservations and got in. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and fresh. The service was just as wonderful, and the view you get with your meal is so beautiful. We can't wait to be back this weekend! There is also a bar inside the restaurant with a nice unique copper countertop. They have an outdoor bar top seating option and we can't wait to try that out during the warmer days. We went to Ewings about 8:30 on a Friday night, and though the kitchen closed at 9 pm, we were seated immediately, and not rushed to order or finish one bit, which I really appreciated. The host, Jeff, was so cordial and relaxed, he made us feel as though we'd been friends for some time. April waited on my wife and I flawlessly. She was extremely prepared and knowledgeable about the food, all the daily menu items, and the beer and wine list as well. The jalapeno poppers were an excellent twist on the same old "deep fried with goat cheese" that's been around for years. These peppers were sliced, loaded, then baked, much like potato skins, and were an excellent appetizer. Perfect amount of "heat". We both ordered the chicken breast and ribeye combo with an assortment of sides, and it was really, really a great plate. Prepared well, served well, and portions so large, we each took leftovers home. Wonderfully seasoned and prepared meats, and all the sides were very good as well. If you're fortunate enough to land on a night when the soup du jour is split pea with ham, do not pass on this. One of the best pea soups we'd ever had. A+ on the meal, the quality of the food, the staff and service, and the beautiful view from our table at the window, overlooking the Kern River at sunset. The background music that included The Tesky Brothers, and Marcus King was a nice bonus. Loved our dinner. read more

Was looking for a nice last dinner from our time here in Kernville and had read mixed reviews on this place. Was so glad to actually have tried it out. We got there at around 6:50 and were seated about 25 minutes later. Everyone was extremely kind. Setting was warm and comforting. The view was nice. We recieved our Appetizer about 10 mins after ordering it. We had the Loaded Potato Croquettes which were 10/10. About 15 mins after that, we were served our entree which were the Cajun Steak Pasta and Rib Eye Steak. The pasta was perfectly creamy and filet mignon in that was like butter. They were ready. They quickly seated us and offered drinks. The menu was pre-planned. We had requested a half turkey sandwich with a side salad and a pizza. The turkey sandwich was delightful. The slice of bacon was a pleasant addition. With carrots and diced cabbage, the salad was incredibly fresh. The views of the Kern River from our dining area were amazing. With windows everywhere, you almost felt like you were sitting outside. (They have a beer patio with outside views). I didn't get a look at the regular menu, but I hope to get back before too long. It is a $$-$$$ restaurant, so be mindful it's for a nicer dinner. They have a limited menu, but everything looks so good. We ended up getting mac & cheese, coconut shrimp, and zucchini spears for appetizers. I really like the mac & cheese and zucchini spears. So good! I got the salmon risotto and my partner got the sirloin steak with sides veggies. My salmon risotto came with a soup or salad starter. I got the clam chowder soup. It was really good! The salmon risotto is pretty good. The salmon was cooked really well. The risotto was very citrus-y. It had a lot of lime in it, which is not what I'm used to for risotto. Wonderful place to eat at when in Kernville. Beautiful view of the mountains and Kern River. The place was empty due to the end of winter break for most family. I'm sure once the snow falls and Whiskey Flats Days get there it will be packed. I had the smashed double pattie hamburger with a gluten free bun and fries. It was delicious. I probably should have had a side salad not sure if those fries were gf. I know I should have asked. My friends (non celiacs) had the fish and chips, one switched the fries out for a side salad. They said it was delicious. One friend added an Isabella Blonde beer with his order from the Kern River Brewing Co. The waitress/hostess was so friendly and nice. Unfortunately I didn't get her name. WHAT A GREAT PLACE The food was amazing, the service was good and the location is a beauty to witness. Nestled up on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Kern River below, with mountains in the background, It is definitely a place for a good romantic dinner, or to impress friends and family. My cousin Lori really wanted me to experience this place and so we went up on a Sunday afternoon around 5, the drive up the mountain was nice. We got there just before Sunday rush so we did not get a seat by the window overlooking the river, but that did not change the service or the quality of the food. I ordered the four-cheese truffle penne pasta with Filet Mignon, I was a bit skeptical because I'm not a fan of pepper-jack cheese, but you could not even tell it was part of the dish. We also ordered the garlic toast which was very buttery and crunchy, very good starter. We also ordered the Strawberry and creams dessert, which was also very good. Upon Leaving the restaurant I left my sunglasses on the divider between our table and the flowers, i called the next day they were closed and left a message about the sunglasses. the next day got a call that they found the glasses and they would mail them to me, I just got them today, and in one piece and no scratches.
