ATTENTION PILOTS!!! The Kern Valley Airport Cafe is BACK! The new ownership and new cooks are amazing! I flew in this morning and grabbed a delicious breakfast sandwich (eggs, bacon, and cheese on sourdough) on my way to the river to fish for a couple hours. The trail is in good condition and it's just under a mile to the river. No bites today, but you know what they say about a bad day fishing - still better than a good day at work. Headed back to the cafe to grab lunch before flying back to KCMA. I got the co-pilot burger and fries. Definitely plenty of food. The burger is tasty and juicy and the cook adds just the right amount of lettuce, onions, and pickles so you get a perfect bite every time! I know a lot of us stopped flying here when the food and service took a nosedive, but I'm here to say: Airpark Cafe is back! L05 is a great little airport. They have a truck with 100LL. If you want to camp overnight, there is a separate ramp next to the camp sites and they have restrooms with running water! Getting in is easy and right traffic for 17 is as close as you'll get to mountain flying without heading out to Idaho. If you're a student pilot in a slump and just need a fun flight, L05 (Kern Valley) is a great trip. Bottom line: would I come back? Sure. Decent food. Decent prices. As someone else mentioned, the portion size for the side order of onion rings is too small. There are only 6 medium sized rings in an order. It was also odd that there were no refills on soft drinks. I'm told it's because they are served from cans and not a fountain machine. What a nice little airport cafe. We flew in and camped at the airport campground. It's a short walk to the cafe from the campground ($20/ngt). There's both inside and patio seating. The staff works their butts off to serve customers. I wouldn't say they're the most experienced though, as there were a few little hiccups, but they were hustling. I tried a breakfast burrito. It wasn't as good as I was imagining, but it did the trick. Prices seemed a little high but maybe that's just the new norm. No objections to eating here again...especially because I hear the burgers are really good. read more

Enjoyed a Saturday morning breakfast at this little cafe. Inside it's a cozy room with 5 tables inside for dining (and a few tables on the patio) in view of the tiny kitchen area. The place was full of diners and there was one cook knocking out all of the dishes. What a rockstar! I know that's not an easy job, but he seemed calm and efficient. It's understandable that there is a little bit of a wait for the food, but there is plenty to look at! Lots of aviation books/magazines, airplanes outside, etc. I judge a cafe based on their eggs & bacon; my overeasy eggs were great, bacon was thick and crispy. The home style potatoes were fried perfectly with lots of bell peppers and onions. Their sourdough was tasty and buttery. My husband got the sausage omelette that was huge and stuffed with chopped sausage patties and cheese. Overall, it was a nice experience. The manager was very friendly and attentive. We paid around $30 for our big breakfast plates, a coffee and an iced tea. I took home quite a bit of leftovers. I will come back to try their burgers! read more

I found the airport to be a pleasant experience. The two person staff were very friendly. Jazzy is a star even if she has only been there a week. I didn't get the cook's name but she made me feel welcome as soon as I parked where she was taking a break outside. It was fairly warm and for those that complain about flies you always have the indoor option. It's very clean and cool in there too. My party of three had the standard breakfasts. The hashed browns O'brien style had just enough crispiness and the bacon was tasty. It's a charming spot and was the best breakfast I had in the Kern River Valley among the four I tried. The others followed in this order, Nelda's in Lake Isabella, Cheryl's and The Cracked Egg in Kernville. read more

Flew in with a friend for lunch. We called ahead for opening hours and the lady running the cafe that day gave us some info on local weather and, later, a wind check on our way across Lake Isabella. Food was OK - standard short order fare. Excuse me if I don't praise it as highly as others but it's not why you should visit. Apart from the challenge of the journey here, the view from the deck is beautiful when the sun is out, with the runway out front and the river and mountains behind. The cafe has a few tables inside too; in winter perhaps next to the iron stove is the best place to be. On the weekday we visited it was a one person show, with Shawn taking orders, doing the cooking and cleaning, and chatting about local history and events. They have a crew car but it's a bit sick at the moment. However, if you ask there might be some bicycles to borrow for free, and if they have time and you're not an ass one of the locals will probably drive you the few miles to Kernville. The worst wait ever!! Ordered 2 pilot burgers and a hit dog and they have not brought out my order. Been waiting for over an hour! WTF?

Fantastic service, huge tasty burgers (big enough to split the Co-Pilot; can't imagine how big the Pilot burger is), and gigantic plate of fries. Come hungry and enjoy the hometown service. I've been to the airport cafe and had mediocre experiences but kept trying for the sake of variety. But after this last time, I'll never be back . Wait staff was nice and view is nice but that's about all this place has going for it. The chairs on the patio feel like they will crumble if you sit on them. We ordered 1 burger, 1 pulled pork sandwich, a side of onion rings and a salad. It was not busy and there was only one couple ahead of us who ordered 2 burgers. They got their food, ate it, paid and left before we received our food an hour after arriving. We watched through the window as the cook took his time and talked on his cell phone for 20-30 mins instead of making the orders that were staking up. Once we received our food, it all came out at once. The salad was warm from sitting on the counter next to the grill. The onion rings and pork sandwich were cold and the burger was soggy. We paid $3.50 for the side of onion rings and they delivered us a paper plate with 8 tiny, crappy, frozen, cheap-o onion rings. It was worth maybe $0.25. Any waitress would be mortified to have to deliver that to a table. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

This was a unique experience. It was nice to have a breakfast spot on the field while camping. It saved us the trouble of packing in food and supplies in the airplane. Back to the uniqueness, the waitress had no idea what was on the menu -- when we ordered she said, "We don't have that." But they did. It ended up all working out. The food was average. It took a while to get the order but it was well worth the experience. We hung out on the patio with my dog and listened to the locals talk "airport" stuff. Went to Airport Cafe several months ago and now that I'm back in Kern County, just not getting around to writing this review. Airport Cafe was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've encountered...maybe ever. Went for breakfast with a party of 5 (two kids under 3) during the summer and the first thing we noticed as soon as we sat down outside were the flies. I know this isn't entirely the fault of the restaurant but it didn't help. We'll come back to the flies shortly. We waited nearly 2 hours for our breakfast to arrive, and (a) we didn't order anything heroic or out of the ordinary, and (b) the place didn't seem unusually crowded. When the food finally did arrive, it was luke warm. Then the flies decided to step up their game and pay our food a visit. Aces! So disgusting. With the drive to get there and the lousy experience, I think we'll go with The Cracked Egg or Cheryl's for breakfast the next time we're in town. read more

The Airport Cafe is a bit out of the way, but definitely worth the detour, and very entertaining on weekend mornings when small planes make their approaches into the airport. There's always a few salty old heckler pilots there critiquing every takeoff and landing at the tricky strip over breakfast. It's a fun spot, and the view of the valley is great. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and the ladies always get on the radio to say thanks as you're flying back down the valley. read more

Just went to the airport café for lunch it was so smoky inside because the grill exhaust was probably filthy dirty and not letting out. I asked if it was broken she says no it's on. Everything with overcooked huge burgers but the fries were harder than rocks. Not to mention the cooked smoked. About 40 minutes before we got our food wasn't impressed.
