Moved to Gilbert about 8 months ago after living in Denver for the past decade. The entire duration of that decade I'd been using the same hair stylist (fyi Shannon @ Scarlet Salon in LoHi is a bad ass men's hair stylist). I started digging around Yelp in search of my next go-to hair spot. In terms of good reviews, EMG stands out from the pack for good reason. High positive energy inside of these EMG barber shops. That results in these guys churning and burning some great haircuts. There are numeros EMG locations in the valley, all with outstanding barbers. I mentioned Shannon back in Denver being a bad ass men's hair stylist... Tony is just as bad ass. Love his haircuts. Spent some money in here getting a cut, shampoo, nose wax, and a shave. Haircut was all over the place. Not what I wanted at all and uneven in so many places. Nose wax left me with hairs still in my nose. And I have no idea the technique used for my shave but it was a combination of a blade and electric. Didn't even get the blade on the mouth areas. Yeah not going back here. I will say the conversation was great but the quality I got was so not worth it. read more

3 strikes you're out. That is the only thing I can really say going forward from now on. I have been a loyal customer for years now. To the point that I've taken my own son here in the last year too.. But the last 3 times I've taken him here they have messed up my sons hair time and time again. The first time I asked for a simple mid fade. Dora practically have him a zero all around and used a razor to give a shaved part and line up his hair which I never requested for. EMG apologized and didn't charge me. Fine, whatever. I'll take my wife's anger at me and try again in a couple weeks. I took my son a 2nd time and asked for a simple undercut by Xander and nothing on the top. The dude literally gave him bald spots and was a clown enough to think he did a job well done. Thank God Tony was there, noticed it and fixed it himself. But my haircut did not go as planned either. Asked for a simple low drop fade, the barber gave me a full on 1 around while talking up game and showing his pride. (Dark skinned New Yorker). Fine. I'll take the yelling from my wife again and try one more time. It should go better here on out right? I went to take my son in again yesterday. He was cut by some random girl named Miriam who I never seen in my life. She understood what I wanted because I showed her a picture of exhibit A. A undercut on the sides, nothing on the top. She shaved the left side of his hair completely off but you know what? I was willing to forgive it because my sons hair was long enough to cover her error. I even had to remind her to shape the back of his neck because she literally left a mountain scale. Anyways. He was good, drinking his soda and of course here comes the prideful New Yorker who always seems to get in the way of everyone haircuts and I've seen it myself. He always wants to "Correct" other barbers cuts. Now I specifically said the cut was fine and forgivable. The dark skinned New Yorker called my son over WITHOUT MY CONSENT and began to cut his hair. Just so you know, this happened while he was giving another man a cut. He literally started cutting my sons hair in front of the man who had been getting cut and was now waiting in the chair as he watched him cut my sons hair. "I'm just shaping it a little he said to me and Miriam who was passing by. I am a very patient man, so I trusted him it was gonna be a little trim on the side with the scissors. I was getting my haircut at the same time so I couldn't see my own son. Now here comes the good part... The man was bent over cutting my hairs son. And my son WHINED. When my son whines and says it bothers him or hurts him, he means it. What did this dark skinned New Yorker barber do when he heard my son whine? "Oh shush." Yup. "Oh shush." He said to my son, and continued cutting his hair. He shushed my son, ignored his discomfort after calling him over without my consent and ended up chopping off his hair on top 3 inches! WHICH I NEVER ASKED FOR. I'm done. That's it. I'm not going to continue to upset my wife. My son and I are never coming back to EMG ever again. Tony, buddy. Where in the world are you recruiting these guys from? I wish you the best and I hope you get your house in order. Cause right now it seems it's burned to the ground. read more

Stopped in for a quick haircut/trim. This was a walk in, normally I go to my normal barber but due to scheduling conflicts I had to come to a different place. Read the reviews place sounded solid, had the pleasure of a female barber I forget her name, though I don't know if she even said it. Long story short, she cut my hair way shorter than requested. Never bothered to even get my hair wet?? Lastly didn't even clean the hair up off me. I'm sad to leave such a terrible review but I will never go back here. I set up an appointment a week ago with the owner, Ian, and showed up on time today. Ian wasn't there but another barber was. I had negotiated a veteran's price with Ian and the other barber wouldn't honor it. He even called Ian to ask about it but said that Ian wouldn't be in till Friday! So, I left...pissed. I truly cannot say enough good things about these guys. They did both my kids hair cuts last night and both turned out phenomenal. I have a 9 year old and a 2 year old (who this was his first official haircut) and both barbers were so kind and so patient. My two year old was super nervous about it and not the biggest fan but our guy took his time, joked around with him, made sure he felt comfortable and safe getting his first haircut. My oldest can't stop telling us how cool his barber was and asking us how handsome he looks and making his model faces for us seriously these guys are just the absolute best and I cannot recommend them enough!! They'll definitely be our go to from here on out. Everyone in the place gave off the best energy too so you felt comfortable and it felt like one big family there. read more

*Sigh* So since I wrote my last updated review I was informed by another Yelper that Tony was in his shop talking shit about me. At first they did not know if he was talking about me (but thought it might be since they had read my review and he was talking about stuff in my review). Then, he started referring to me by name. At one time I did love EMG and Tony. However, in my last year in going here my experience has drastically changed since my first review. I tried to note this on Yelp but apparently this type of truthful review/criticism is not welcome at EMG. If you don't believe me then feel free to go look at other negative reviews for EMG and see Tony's responses. He even says that people are making fake reviews and that their reviews are unwarranted/fake and all they want to do is hurt him and/or EMG. Better yet, you could probably go into his shop and hear him talk shit about me with other customers since that seems to be OK with him. I also had his co-manager contact me via email to tell me that I was being unfair and mean towards Tony. The bottom line is this. Tony will be cool with you so long as you write a good review for him. If you have a negative experience or write something negative about him then all bets are off on how he is going to treat you. In all fairness, you can get a good cut here and for the most part EMG is a great shop. However, I find it utterly disgraceful for an owner to talk shit enough that a stranger wants to talk message me and let me know that I'm being openly slandered. read more

Normally I go with Tony, but with my extreme busy schedule, and the fact that Tony himself needs to be booked weeks in advance, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE for me to get my haircut by him. Wow they were so good with my almost 1 year old. First haircut and meltdown city. Neek was his barber and did such a great job and kept his cool and was so nice the whole time my son was trying to swat him away. Over the course of three months, I had my hair cut three times and beard trimmed twice. Each time, I went with whoever was available, so it was 3 separate barbers. I paid cash each time. The price posted for a haircut/beard trim is $47 but oddly I was charged varying prices at the register, though I did not alter my request or ask for anything special. My first visit was fantastic! Probably the best cut and trim I've ever had. He took my request, added a little flair of his own, and I loved it. He charged me $42 and I gave $62 but would have paid $100. I wish I could have that cut every time. 5-stars. My second visit was not good. The guy was nice but not nearly as experienced as the first. He gave me the same haircut I could get for $13 at a local chain competitor. The beard trim was actually worse than I could do for myself. He charged me $52, I gave him $60 and left very disappointed. 2-stars. My third visit I decided to skip the beard trim based on my previous experience. This barber was pretty good, and the cut met my expectations but didn't exceed them like my first visit. He was very friendly and engaging, so I'd choose him again. He charged me $31, I gave him $41. 4-stars. I'm not sure if I'll go back. I noticed you don't always get the person you're scheduled with. That's what happened on my 2nd visit. The guy I was scheduled with passed me along to another barber. I don't want to take that risk. read more

So I've found that when you find the right doctor and the right barber life is much better. For years I've been to all different barber shops or anyplace that cuts hair really and haven't found the right person to cut my hair. Fast forward to over a year ago I decided to try EMG and it wasn't a bad experience so I came back the next few times. However it wasn't until I made an appointment with Tony that I decided that this was the right place with the right Barber. Tony knows what he's doing and I really appreciate the attention to detail and the time he puts into the cut. Especially because of the type of hairstyle I like along with having thick blond hair with a cow lick, im not the easiest person to give a hair cut. The shop in Gilbert is what you would expect as a barber shop, friendly and they are themselves. At times they crack a few adult jokes and it's entertaining but they are also mindful when kids are in as not to say anything to brash. Ultimately if your looking for a great barber in Gilbert I would give EMG a shot. Thanks Tony and keep up the good work. read more

Barbershop... that is definitely what this. I have a 12 year old son who has had the worst of worst cuts most of his life. I did find a lady at a Salon that I really like, but taking my son to a Salon doesn't really get him stoked for cuts. I decided to find a place for him specifically, hoping it might entice him to keep up on the haircuts. After peeking through I decided upon this spot. I booked his appointment online with Tony Starks himself. Upon walking in, everyone was friendly. They had football on the screens and Tony did awesome. The kid loves his cut and wants this to be where he goes for cuts from now on. Inexpensive and in my opinion, men likely know better how to cut men's hair. The fade is tight :-) I enjoyed hanging although I felt a bit feminine for a minute there but it's all good, I'm just the payer not really the customer. He was completely satisfied. read more
