We visited on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised that the park wasn't too crowded. Because of this, we had extra time for a few additional stops along the route, which was a great bonus. All of the stops were amazing, especially Old Faithful and Artist Point. We were also lucky enough to see an incredible variety of wildlife, including a grizzly bear, black bear, bison, elk, and more. One thing to note is that most stops are about 20-50 minutes long, so there isn't a lot of time to fully explore each area or purchase food. Our group chose to include lunch through the company, and it was more than enough for lunch. I would suggest to bring some snacks if you're a snacker. I loved the water bottle design they provided and ended up bringing it home as a souvenir. Overall, I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Yellowstone!

The staff in the office were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The snowmobiles were in great shape and work flawlessly! Our guide, Roy, did a super job! Ospreys are protected by Federal law during their nesting season, approximately April through…read moreAugust. We saw two osprey nests in Yellowstone National Park, and one nearby in Montana. They feed, and feed their chicks, on trout, and we saw them near water, in our cases atop a tall tree near a river. The nest was huge, probably weighing hundreds of lbs, typically 200 to 350 lbs, as they are built up year after year by returning birds. We think we could hear the chicks chirping! Rather than advertise the locations of the nests we saw, how about i point you to search for the Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks osprey-cam! Right now (Jul 2026), the start of civil-twilight is around 6am, and the end is around 8:10pm. It's very cool! I just put it on my tv's web browser.

Watching animals in their natural habitats and not in an enclosure is magical. 4. All the Yellowstone rangers are super helpful and ready to help if you're lost and not sure how to get to your destination. Cons: 1. The biggest cons to Yellowstone and the reason why I can only give the park 3 stars instead of 4 are the parking nightmares and lack of bathrooms, especially in the high-profile attractions. There is just no excuse for that when there's plenty of space to build more parking lots and bathrooms. 2. Somewhat related to #1, because the roads only have one lane for each direction, traffic logjams often occur when long lines of cars are formed trying to get into a parking lot that's already full. And since there's only one lane, it's not really possible to go around them if you're just trying to go straight. 3. Food pretty mediocre and extremely overpriced.

I toured Yellowstone National Park on three separate days (12/17-12/19/2018) in snowcoaches…read moreprovided by Alpen Guides. Since the cost of the tours was included in a vacation package provided by a travel company, I'm not sure about Alpen Guides' specific prices. This review is based on how much I appreciated the tour itself. I went on two tours to Old Faithful & one to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The Grand Canyon tour included a box lunch. The Old Faithful tour didn't include a meal but you could purchase something to eat at the Old Faithful visitor's center restaurant if you wanted to. I was so excited about riding the snowcoaches! In Yellowstone, snowcoaches are a normal mode of transportation during the winter but I'd never ridden one or even seen one in person before. In lieu of regular tires, the back portion of a snowcoach has tracks like a tank & the front part has something that resembles skis so it can plow through the snow. The reason why I was so anxious to ride one is because the kid in me remembered the old "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" animation special where the narrator rode one. For each tour, I was picked up just before 8:30 am near the front of the motel where I was staying. We normally returned back from the tour around 4:30 pm. The tour groups are usually small (the ones I went on ranged from 4 to 8 tourists with either one or a couple of driver/tour guides). On the three days I went, I rode with customers from Ohio, Alabama, Maryland, Canada, Utah, and the Phillipines (among other places). We were told not to throw gum or candy wrappers on the ground inside the park because they want to keep Yellowstone as natural as possible. During the winter season when there's lots of snow, they only allow snowcoaches & snowmobiles in Yellowstone. Snowcoaches have a speed limit of 25 mph while snowmobiles have a speed limit of 35 mph. Because snowmobiles are allowed to go faster, snowcoach drivers are supposed to pull over to the side and let them pass. Snowmobile drivers usually travel in groups & from my observation behaved like groups of people in a motorcycle club; like they owned the road even though most of them were riding snowmobiles for the first time. The crowds in Yellowstone are small & spread out in December so even with the snowmobilers we felt like we almost had the park to ourselves. The worst thing about the snowmobilers is when we're quietly taking pictures of wildlife & then they drive up en masse & unintentionally scare the animals off. Our drivers/tour guides were excellent at their job. They had eyes like hawks, pointing out such sights as bald eagles nesting in the trees that most of us would've missed. They knew everything about the various types of trees and wildlife. My favorite part was other than seeing the wildlife was listening to the guides tell stories about their experiences in Yellowstone. One tour guide told us about when he was by himself in the park & a grizzly began approaching him. He had to use bear spray to temporarily slow it down so he could get in his vehicle & drive away. Another guide told us about how bald eagles mate for life & how they sometimes test the worthiness of a mate during courtship by doing a death spiral. A death spiral is when they lock talons high in the air, tumble towards the earth & then let go just before hitting the ground. That's how they decide whether their mate is a ride or die. If you're trying to decide which tour to choose, I'd recommend that you go on both. The Old Faithful tour has the best opportunity for souvenirs due to the two gift shops near the geyser. Also, there's a restaurant beside one of the souvenir shops. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone tour is popular too because tourists love taking selfies with the canyon waterfall in the distant background. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone tour includes a boxed lunch that consists of a cold sandwich (roast beef, turkey, etc.), small bag of chips & Oreo cookies. We ate the boxed lunch inside the Canyon Visitor Education Center (where you can see animal skulls & pelts). You'll see wildlife on both tours but I saw more bison on the Old Faithful tour. Every time you venture into Yellowstone it's likely you'll notice something you didn't see the day before. I enjoyed riding the snowcoaches but my favorite was the maroon bombardier that has been running since the 1950s that's nicknamed Chip. It also had a roof that the driver sometimes opened when Chip was parked. You could stand up, stick your head out & take pictures. The other snowcoaches were nice too, although they looked more modern. All of them were toasty inside but during the winter you should wear warm clothing because you will get out of the ride & walk some. The weather fluctuated from single digits to the twenties later in the afternoon. Alpen Guides is as good as it gets when it comes to sightseeing tours. Five stars!

We are locals from Wyoming. Last year a tour operator (at a different company) laid out options and she encouraged us to make our own decisions. If you like not making decisions or having input, listening to Yellowstone facts (sprinkled with politics) blasted into your ears while you drive through pristine Yellowstone, Don is for you!

We saw the sulfur pools and learned so much more than just reading the signs. She provided thermometer guns so the kids could see the variation in temp from pool to mud pot to steam vent. She timed our arrival at Old Faithful PERFECTLY! We waited just 10 minutes and watched from a much better spot than the general viewing area (and learned that an average blast can fill 150 bathtubs!!). We stopped at Old Faithful Inn and the Lake Lodge. We saw Firehole Falls and the Lower Falls. We lunched in a beautiful, shaded picnic area with truly DELICIOUS sandwiches and HOMEMADE cookies!!! We spent over 11 hours trekking 270 miles total from our vacation home in Big Sky into the park and back. It was a total gift for everyone to be able to enjoy all the scenery and learn along the way and not have to drive. I ALMOST FORGOT!! We saw a GRIZZLY swim across the river! Plentiful Bison (they are such MASSIVE creatures), Laura pointed out Osprey nests, a pelican!! And so so much more!! It will be hard not to do Yellowstone this way EVERY trip. We were already staying one night at Capitol Reef Resort, and it was super convenient to add it onto my room booking.  We chose the 4 hour hike and our guide was informational and friendly. There were only 4 people and 4 llamas plus our guide at our time slot. Our llamas Hugo and Benny were beautiful and kept us smiling the whole time. My hubby normally does not enjoy hiking but the 4 miles went by pretty quickly! We did get a few short 10-15 minute breaks. Our llama also carried the tables, chairs, food, and drinks for our picnic.  Our guide made us a Caprese sandwich and we got to enjoy the view with some cheesecake after. We got tons of beautiful pictures and videos with our llamas.  This was such a memorable experience and we were so happy to hike with the friendly and well behaved creatures.  When we hiked back to our hotel, we got to say good-byes by feeding the llamas some treats and taking more pictures.  I highly recommend this to anyone who loves llamas!

Capitol Reef is off the beaten path for most travelers, but it's a cool park and the rock formations are fascinating. We stayed at the Capitol Reef Resort (which was also great) and they had signs for llama hikes. What the heck is a llama hike?? My almost 60 year old Mom was a skeptic. I went on Instagram and found the company is rooted in Idaho, but have expanded across the country. I didn't have phone service so I did email contact and tried to use the hotel phone. Within minutes I got a response! This was 15 hours notice and they said we were in. AWESOME. So the llamas come up over the hill and I'm like -- this is amazing already and it only got better from there. Our guide, Jessiny, was so kind, knowledgeable and treated us to a wonderful 2 hour walk/hike in the washes of Capitol Reef, an area hardly traversed. Also, the guide/hike was just us! They do this private reservation thing so it's just your booking and the guide -- what?! All for $180?? What a steal. Let's get to the llamas. My skeptical mother was smitten within minutes. They are these giant, fluffy, adorable creatures that want to cuddle, walk with you and just chill while you walk around the outskirts of Capitol Reef. It's like having a giant camel-like dog by your side. You can put your stuff in their packs and feed them treats. It's the absolute BEST. Our guide was also super cool about making stops, getting water and taking pictures. She was also attuned to our pace and energy levels. The whole experience was outstanding and it made memories forever. Do this while you are here, it was worth every penny. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I miss my llama already.
