TLDR, don't charge fine dining prices if you can't deliver an experience worthy of the price. Went for a birthday dinner and several dishes our group received were not up to par. Brussel sprouts are not charred, but in fact burned. "Mapo Tofu" is in-fact not Mapo tofu but a 1/4 block's worth of tofu fried in an ok sauce. Broccolini had a good sauce but it did not adhere to the vegetable well so you were mostly getting the taste of completely bland broccoli and a bit of sauce every few bites. Table side fried rice was ok but underwhelming. Lamb chops and crab claws were good. Drinks were the best part of the experience, everyone who got a drink enjoyed theirs. I got the mango one myself and it was nice. The "sailor moon" was refreshing and the "what we do in secret" is good for those looking for a sweet drink without being overly sugary. Ambiance is so-so. The decor is outdated in certain places downstairs and in the nightclub upstairs. If you're going for a spot to take nice photos, there are other restaurants in the area that are nicer. There are a couple of nice spots but like I said there's nicer places at the same price point. Bathroom lighting is strange making it hard to see in the shadow of the bright overhead lights and the setup was a bit odd. Service was average, nothing notably good or bad to say about any of the staff. For birthdays they bring out a sparklers and a half a slice of cheesecake with strawberry sauce on a plate with happy birthday written in chocolate. I think they must do a lot of birthdays since multiple tables nearby got this. The demand may explain why the piece of cheesecake was so small but it still seemed a bit cheap. Overall I would not recommend this restaurant and probably tell people not to go if they were planning to. There's nothing particularly terrible about it but you really aren't getting your money's worth. So many other places that deliver where Zuzu fails at this price point.
The beginning of this meal was great but slowly declined as the meal went further and further along. We had a group of 6 and was seated quickly. They have a menu shortage so we all shared menus which not a big deal, but was strange and made sense why it took so long to get menus after seating. We all ordered cocktails which were very good. We all ordered a bunch of apps as well, the sushi was delicious, the spicy tuna crispy rice was also a favorite. We all ordered entrees which ended up being lack luster. The Asian pepper steak came out cold, which they did remake. The steak used seem to be trimmings of the steaks. It was very tough and fatty. If I have on piece of advice DO NOT ORDER THE TABLE SIDE FRIED RICE. It came out after we were already half way done with our meals, and it's literally on a chilis fajita skillet. They charge $36 and the portion size was maybe 1.5 cups of rice. (See picture, no one had taken any off of the plate) They dump raw egg on it that doesn't fully cook with the skillet, and the sauce on top was so gross. Overall would stop in for some drinks /apps / sushi. But would not get an entree.
Five stars are for service and location. Zuzu is perfectly located on Woodward Ave at a great location for people and car watching at the outside bar. The food came fast and the drinks were good served with attentive, professional service. The food I would say was three - four starts. I have had better tapas back home in MKE and in Chicago. The carrot cake was MASSIVE and sweet but not rich. I was not a fan of the popcorn on top. However, I did not need carrot cake anyway . The overall experience was well worth it.
I came here tonight with 6 girls for a birthday dinner & I have to share my experience! First off, on the way to the restaurant we called to add a seat & they were so kind about adding!! It was such a nice vibe inside. Hate when nice restaurants have TVs tho. (They have a 15 minute grace period btw) Our waiter, Jordaee, was awesome! He was so attentive to what we needed and took our orders quickly. He did a great job explaining the menu. Now the food -- so so good!!!! The spicy edamame has this sauce that's so good!! The blue fin roll was so so good & the king ora! GET THE GARLIC NOODLES & YAKI UDON! Get it! Don't skip! (Get the tenderloin in the yaki We were all having a great time. Here's my only qualm: We were there for a birthday and we paid for the dessert..... I totally thought it would be comped or something. We would have skipped the cake if we knew tbh. That was our only skip of the meal. Also, the manager or owner (idk) his name is Mo! He was so kind! Came to us when he saw we were done eating because he thought we didn't like the food. We were just waiting for boxes, don't worry Mo! We loved the food! Come here, but beware you'll spend money. But it's good!
Wow what a GEM! My partner and I took a trip to Detroit, we stumbled on ZUZUs they didn't disappoint. From the moment we walked in the service was top tier. My waitress Que is the ABSOLUTE best! I'm big on customer service, I ask a lot of questions. She helped me with some of our selections. Very patient and funny if I had a business I'd love for her to represent it. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly 10/10, not overcooked and very tender. The Miso Sea Bass wraps 10/10 the Asian infusions are so creative. I've never had anything like this in my life! The ambiance is just my style a little loud but I could most definitely hear my partner as we chatted. No big deal to me, I figured the good food had everyone was chatting. The prices didn't bother me at all, I love experiences there isn't a price you can pay for that. This entire experience was a 10/10 highly recommended. Thanks again Que, the chefs bcuz they most definitely put their chef kiss on these dishes!
Staff was very accommodating with me with setting up a surprise dinner for my mom. We arrived a little early. We stayed our whole time in a little bit over. The Darius are server was absolutely on top of it. I looked everything about him, his presentation, his knowledge, his sense of being there. He made sure everything ran very smoothly. Thank you Darius I appreciate you and keeping things in order. The food was delicious. Everything everybody ordered from the lamb chops to the peppers. Steak was delicious. The sushi rolls was good. Could be a little bigger but very good. Especially for price. I'm overall I'll give it a 10 out of 10. It isn't experience.
Honestly the ambiance is amazing here, very pretty, drinks were good, and our server was amazing. But for our food I was very disappointed. The pasta did not taste like anything, and personally the salmon was very gummy. The manager was okay with giving 2 people at the table a refund but not the others...so it resulted in all of us only getting 50% off. I appreciated it, but to give the accommodation to two people but not for two others who all ordered the same food is ridiculous! Wouldn't come here outside for the bar, the manager was pretty rude, and just walked away and dismissed us. Not sure if it was a racial thing with a table of 6 black women or what, but I've never experienced something like this before. Won't be back!
I don't know how this was my first time trying Experience Zuzu when it's been open for years. We went on a Sunday night to celebrate a friend's birthday, and it was much busier than we expected. Despite the crowd, service was excellent. Our server Alene was wonderful, and Chris was kind enough to take a bunch of photos of our group. They even brought out a complimentary birthday dessert and champagne for the table, which was such a thoughtful touch. Just a heads up: there's a 20% gratuity automatically included, but it's very well-deserved. We ordered the Japanese A5 Wagyu skewer, Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna, Truffle Scallop & Asian Pear Roll, Lobster Tempura Roll, Lil Z's Sweet & Sour Chicken, and Yaki Udon Noodles with beef tenderloin. Everything was flavorful and beautifully presented. My friends thought the wagyu skewer was a little fatty, but that's pretty typical for authentic A5 beef. The atmosphere was lively without being chaotic -- perfect for a fun night out. I'll definitely be back soon, maybe for a date night next time!
This was a date night selection for us while we went to downtown because of a lot of reviews we had gotten from friends and yes it didn't disappoint. They have a good selection of appetizers and entrees, though desserts can be better. The serving staff was very careful with special requests we were putting in. My boyfriend personally felt the place a bit overpriced but I can come back to it again atleast one more time. We were a bit disappointed by the zuzu campfire dessert we ordered as it felt very basic and 22$ was way over priced for the quality of the items in the dessert. The pictures omg came out so pretty without having to need any filtering. Ambience inside is top notch.
We had such a great experience! Tomacita was our waitress tonight and she was absolutely wonderful -- she explained the menu perfectly and made sure we were always taken care of. The food was delicious! We ordered a little bit of everything and each dish just kept getting better. We came to celebrate a friend's birthday and the vibe of the place made it even more special -- such a fun aesthetic! I ordered the noodles and they were everything. Can't wait to come back!

Favorites were the gyoza, A5 wagyu skewer, crispy rice spicy tuna, shrimp garlic noodles, and of course the dessert! This is a favorite when craving upscale Asian in Detroit.
for value wise i'd say 3/5 because: it's way too expensive for how mid the food tastes. it's not terrible, but can't justify the prices. ambiance and decor and service is through the roof though. tuna roll has too many pickled radishes. most of the dishes were overly salted. but walnut shrimp was yom and wish the drinks were stronger

Everything!!!! From taking my request to accommodate my wife's broken leg to the great service and the delicious food we really enjoyed our dinner celebrating our anniversary! The restaurant was shabby chic!!! We had Q and Truman as great servers and they did not disappoint! Not one item we ordered was a disappointment. All the food was on point! Stopped here because pictures online looked so cool and we were not disappointed I made a reservation thankfully because they seemed a bit busy. We were brought upstairs to our table. This place looks super cool. The ceiling had some sort of decor that I can't even describe. There were disco balls and lots of red elements. And some Asian influences well. Our server brought us our drinks, the first choice i had was sold out but the second choice was still very tasty. We had a couple small appetizers and a dessert. They also gave us a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. It came out with a sparkler which was so fun and exciting! I've never had that before! Really liked the sake we tried as well! Only thing I noticed was the menus seemed a bit aged but other than that this place was really awesome! Loved our experience here read more
Love Experience Zuzu!! It's such a vibe, from the moment you walk in! The food is absolutely delicious. We loved the crab and lobster tacos, fried rice with shrimp and udon noodles and beef! ZuZu was the perfect spot for my birthday dinner. There are plenty of seating choices; inside on a cold day, outside on a beautiful day, bar seating with televisions. Our server was amazing. His name is Jordan. He was attentive, suggestive, caring, and made sure to keep our drinks filled & the dishes cleared. The food was amazing. The appetizers were the right amount, the entrees were delicious, and the dessert was the perfect ending! We will definitely be back to ZuZu! read more
Everything was amazing here! I walked in sat right at the bar and Emily my bartender was great as well. She gave me her favorite items as well as overall popular items! I loved the lobster tempura. It was filling as well as deliciously tasty! The shrimp garlic noodles was amazing well and had a good portion. The inside was decorated with red and black colors and it was amazingly beautiful in there. I will be going back here to experience the Waygu and all! read more

First off always get Q as your waitress. She is beyond amazing! I've been to this spot TWICE now in the same month. The first time she was my actual waitress and she went above and beyond to make sure my birthday dinner was amazing! The second time I had a new waitress and Q still went out of her way to go above and beyond to make sure the experience was amazing! I didn't booked either reservation but in the future I will make sure we ask for Q to be our waitress it def makes a difference! Now y'all already know the ambiance is on point! So many opportunities for pictures. The outside bar is so cute. I will say we had to wait for our reservation and from the first time things seem to be slowing down with service over all. It took us a minute to get service at the outside bar. Then the food took a while. But the food was on point so I can't complain about that! The tree leches was not my favorite I'll pass on that next time. However the margarita glass with the cake dessert was amazing even though it was huge and we didn't finish it! The lamb chops, and steaks are great. Except mine came out and weren't smoking on the grill like I've seen in other reviews and how our steaks came out the first time. So again not sure if it was the new waitress having an off night or the restaurant overall is having an off night. Because they were out of a drink the waitress suggested to us. Then my drink took a long time to come out as well. But all in all even with those hiccups. Q coming with her smiling face and consistently asking us if we are okay I will definitely give this place another shot and see if it was an off night or if it is losing some of the work from the first time I was there! Great experience hence the name! Sushi was good, noodle dish was middle of the road. We sat at the bar and got a drink before our table was ready, I'd recommend doing that. The place made me feel better than the actual food but wasn't bad! Great for groups or special occasions as it's not cheap. read more

Rasool was just a fantastic server!!!! My cousin is about to leave for 8 months on a cruise ship and he gave him the best advice and made it a truly memorable gift. The Wagyu beef is to die for. read more
The food presentation was beautiful! Very aesthetically pleasing, however, the flavor was missing on a few of the dishes! We stopped by Zuzu to get some cocktails while walking around the city. The manager, Gilbert took care of us and he was fabulous. What a great guy! They are lucky to have someone with such great customer service skills. We intended only to have drinks, but decided to grab a little snack while there. We enjoyed the wagyu beef gyoza which were homemade and the spicy edamame. Both were great. We can't wait to visit again next time we are in town. We saw them make some really cool cocktails that we would like to try next time. read more

This was a 4 star mainly for the service and the ambiance. We loved our waiter, and the layout and vibes in the restaurant were really cool. As someone who eats a lot of sushi and seafood, the sushi left a little to be desired, but I wouldn't knock the entire experience for that. I would like to potentially return one day just for the bar, because the cocktails looked great! read more
Finally found the perfect evening to experience ZuZu. They do offer valet parking, but we were able to find parking on the street about a block away. Once we walked in, we gave them the name in which our reservation was under. We were seated within 5 minutes in a cute half circle booth. It wasn't too crowded in there so that was a plus for us (the joy of coming downtown on a weekday). As I looked around, I noticed the inside was a lot smaller than I expected. I guess the pictures online made it appear bigger. But, everything was very well kept, clean, and organized. And The lighting was very dim and intimate. We had an amazing waitress. I don't remember her name, but she was of shorter stature, black hair, and a beautiful personality. I also want to add that the menu needs to be updated, because as we were ordering, our waitress notified us that the restaurant DOES NOT serve green beans anymore. Its listed as a side for some entrees. There is no substitution and the price listed remains the same. So that was a little disappointing. We ordered the following drinks, appetizers, and entrees: "what we do is secret" cocktail, lobster tempura sushi, truffle scallop&Asian pear sushi, crab&lobster tacos, wagu gyoza, wagu tomahawk, new York strip, and brussel sprouts. When I tell you everything was absolutely PERFECT *chef kiss * !!!!! The only thing we didn't care for was the truffle scallop sushi. The truffle oil was not pleasing to the palate. I couldn't even eat another piece after trying it once. Definitely different and hard to ignore. Otherwise, it was such a great night with great food in a restaurant with cool unique decor. read more

We had reservations at Zuzu to celebrate with family. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated and gives Miami vibes. It's a Japanese fusion place so they did incorporate Asian touches to the decor. We had 9 people and we got seated on the first floor in the back which is considerably darker than the rest of the restaurant. My poor aunt and uncle had to use their phone flashlight to read the menu. I understand the whole ambiance thing, but it was just a bit too dark (hence my mediocre pictures). Our servers were very nice and welcoming. We had some appetizers to start and the walnut shrimp was cooked really well but honestly didn't taste nor see any walnut. The wagyu gyoza was decent but didn't have much filling for the price we paid. We also got 2 sushi rolls as appetizers since we all wanted to order from the kitchen for our dinner entree. I didn't care for the lobster tempura roll since they used cream cheese in it. It honestly ruined the sushi. The scallop truffle blue fin toro roll was my favorite and actually was fresh and light. I got the miso glazed sea bass which was good but was missing a side of vegetables or greens. It was just fish and a side of rice. The glaze was on the sweeter side and after talking with my family, their dishes (shishito pepper steak & roasted chicken) were also very sweet like they added sugar to all their sauces. The shrimp garlic noodles were delicious but heavily salted so that ruined the noodles too. It's unfortunate because I wanted to like this place but it seems like a better place for drinks and maybe appetizers. ZuZu is one of the coolest dining experiences in Detroit. The moment you walk in, you're hit with high vibes and great energy you just know it's going to be a fun night. We shared a few sushi rolls, all of which were really good. The cocktails were just as impressive. Mix-mash. Fun bar hoppers, post-work garb, dressy, exercise clothing! I think they'd like to to be more high-end but they e got a ways to go.
