While he was…read moregenerally responsive and made lots of promises, he misrepresented himself as an arborist when I needed one for tree root pruning around a sidewalk permit with the City of Oakland. Alejandro only told the truth after we had gathered a big 10-person crew of my general contractor's team, the city inspector and whole concrete team ready to pour the sidewalk. With all these men looking to him for approval as the arborist, he buckled and admitted he wasn't a "certified arborist" but a "licensed arborist." We were all dumbfounded. This colossal waste of time cost me several thousand dollars more from a two week delay and extra man hours over Xmas, when Alejandro left a big safety hazard of sharp nails, overturned plywood, and a mess of wood chips on the sidewalk that another crew had to manage when he was a no-show on the cleaning part. At least he did actually prune the roots after he found a real "certified arborist" to replace him. He did cut back the tree branches just fine. But If you need anything more official than a tree haircut, I don't recommend you choose Alejandro.

Based on that job, we had Jose come back to price planting of sago palms and trimming trees/bushes/hedges. His price sounded good so we scheduled a one-day job for the work. On the scheduled Tuesday, a crew of three arrived (but not Jose to lead the work). We had to explain to the lead what we wanted done (same as we had explained to Jose before). The lead did not appear to understand us completely. The lead even FaceTimed with Jose for clarification. Apparently, that didn't make it any clearer for the lead...as evidenced by the crew's work. During the first three hours, the crew only managed to plant the sago palms...half of them planted too deep in depressions. They ran out of soil. The lead found a bag on my property and asked if they could use it. After I told him no, he used it anyway and said he misunderstood me. One guy also had to leave to buy more soil for the sagos. After I complained to Jose, the crew provided a replacement bag of soil. The crew trimmed the palm trees and hedges ok. They, however, botched the rest of their work. They butchered the bushes, fruit trees and other trees. They only completed about have the work and didn't cleanup at the end of their day...saying they'd be back on Friday. We feel it is unacceptable for them to have left the job site in such a state...even if they planned to return. The crew also broke a yard lantern. Not sure if we can get a replacement. We cancelled their Friday return and only paid them for the work completed. We are not satisfied with either the partial job done or the price charged for that partial job. It's crap. Vega Tree Service clearly had a more important job elsewhere and sent an inexperienced/subpar lead and crew to do our job. Poor customer service. We will not be using Vega's Tree Service again. We also cannot recommend them to other customers.

Both Matthew and Lauren came out and spent a combined good hour plus of time checking out the tree (and freeing up the truck based from some neighboring roots), as well as talking with us on the correct care of our other trees. We gave them the go ahead to spend several hundred dollars in testing to see if they could figure out why the tree was dropping leaves so early in the season. But, before they did, Lauren spent a bunch of time calling around and doing more due diligence and determined this was just the walnut being a walnut and that while it probably has a minor fungal issue, the treatment wouldn't be worth it in this case. So, while they could have spent our several hundred dollars for testing and recommended what I assume would be thousands of dollars in fungal treatment, they called and recommended that the tree was doing well as is no need to do more. And no charge for all their time (I offered!). Definitely will be having them come back this summer to do a pruning of a couple trees, including that leaf dropping walnut, to keep them in good shape.

It got a make over. It now looks like a Monterey Cypress. Orange tree too tall, brought the height down to make it easier for me to reach the fruit. I'm in my 70s and I don't wanna get on a ladder, playing it safe. Now the big surprise. Are HOA did not protect my property from fire. Behind my fense only 5' of grass from my fense line is cut every year. 40 years of growth, poison oak, blackberries, Ivy, Oak saplings, etc., etc. This large field on a 29% slope needed to be cut down and cut back 50 feet from my fence line.. Out came this remote control lawnmower without the handles. It came with three large separate circular blades. It was amazing to watch, it cuts through that poison oak, saplings, blackberries. It had chopped everything up, and then if you ran over it again it shredded whatever was left. You have to understand the things that it was cutting and some areas were 9 feet tall. I was totally impressed. My Neighbourhood was impressed. also He decided to have his backyard done also that very same day. About 1/3 of the redwood tree was trimmed before they gave up and the shoots at the base were not completely cut back. There is a large hole where too much was cut. He had excuses for everything. Rich became very defensive when we asked him to lower the price since they were unable to complete the work in his estimate. After much discussion he agreed to $200 off of the $2,400 bill. His workers left saws strewn about and trash in the yard overnight, and left the trash when they were done. Rich was insulting and very difficult.

This is different from many companies we've used who drop their crew off with minimal instructions and leave for the day. When you hire an arborist you expect that level of service, not guys from Home Depot. We will be using East Bay Tree Service again.
